Edin Dzeko On Target as Roma Put Four Past Cronte #26

Week 5

Score: Roma 4 Cronte 0
– Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following Roma’s controversial loss in Florence to Fiorentina being handed their first loss in Serie A under controversial circumstances after going unbeaten in 20 consecutive Serie A matches. Roma returned home to the Sadio Olimpico for their Wednesday Night fixture in Rome against last place and newly promoted side Crotone for their 5th match of the campaign. Crotone has only managed one point and 3 goals so far this season they have yet to win a game. It was a must win game for the Romans after an undeserving loss. This was the perfect match to get back into from and return to winning ways. It ended up being all one-way traffic as Roma dispatched the visitors easily in dominating fashion as they trashed Crotone 4-0 in Rome. The slaughter started early and didn’t go away until the end of the match. As Roma put in their best performance for the season, Roma got on the counter attack early and often giving them problems all game Crotone never had a chance. The Egyptian connection of El Shaarawy & Muhammad Salah gave Roma a 2 goal lead going into the second half Only for on target Dzeko to add two of his own as Roma Cruised past Crotone to get the shutout.
Once again Roma manager Luciano Spalletti made several adjustments to his staring 11. His team would have a completely different look to them he even decided the change the formation. Roma typically runs the 4-3-3 with four defenders three midfielders and three strikers. That’s how Roma typically lines up but in the match they lined up very differently than they have in the past. This season 4-3-3 has been there bread and butter they haven’t used another formation this season. In the match Roma went with a 4-5-1 formation 4 defenders 5 midfielders and 1 striker. Not only was the formation different but the players they were being used in the starting 11 were different as well. They kept their back four the same with Bruno at Left back, Florenzi as Right back and Manolos and Fazio as the center backs to make up the back. They then played 5 midfielders but they didn’t line up all together. Roma lined up two defensive midfielders slightly in front of the back line. Kevin Strootman making yet another start. The Dutch international dropping down to right defensive midfield for this match as he usually players higher up as an attacking midfielder so a slight change for him. Than joining Kevin as a defensive midfielder would be youngster Leonardo Parades who got his 2nd Serie A start of the season as the right defensive midfielder he would replace Diego Perotti’s spot in the staring 11 due to the switch in formation Diego didn’t start the game. Roma still had their three headed just in a different location. In this fixture it appeared in the midfield rather than up front. Muhamad Salah and El Shaarawy stayed in the same spot but dropped down to midfielder. El Shaarawy played on the left returning to the starting lineup after coming off the bench on Sunday. Than Mohammed Salah started on the right side. Than making up the 3rd head replacing Raja Nainggloan in center midfield would be Roma Legend 39-Year-old Francesco Totti making his 1st start under Spalletti as well as his 1st start since last October. Than up front as the lone striker would be hit man the Bosnian tower standing at 6’4 Edin Dzeko and in goal would be their Serie A regular Wojciech Szczesny. A very different look for the Romans but again going with this squad to attack from inside the box. It would work to their advantage very nicely.
It was a dark night in Rome on a Wednesday Night Fixture coming off their 1st loss in 20 games in Serie A. Rome would look to get back on the right track against bottom feeders Crotone going with a whole new formation attempting to attack in a more effective and different way than they have been. This was a must win game after missing out on going to the top of the table they had to get a good result against a team in such poor form. They were able to seize the opportunity from the very beginning of the match. They were in complete control Crotone just didn’t have the necessary weapons to complete with the Serie A giants. There biggest issue is the past few weeks for Roma wasn’t Roma’s chances because they have had plenty. It has been finishing in front of goal in this match early on it didn’t seem to be an issue anymore they were finishing off all their attacks with great precision and confidence it was working. Really early they were putting them under statically speaking it wasn’t even comparable Crotone weren’t having any success with their attacks they barely could hold on to the ball. Crotone tried to hold them off as much as they could but eventually Roma’s moment came. Roma Right back Alexandro Florenzi came in with the ball at the bottom of the box than sent in the ball through the box into Stephen El Shaarawy who then banged it home into the top right corner past the keeper after the keepers attempt to save it failed. Scoring his 1st goal of the season to give Roma the 1-0 lead 26 minutes in. It would only take 11 minutes for Roma to break through again and double the lead. In the 37th minute Muhammad Salah sliced through the Crotone D like nothing very poor defensive display in this game by the visitors. Than The Egyptian international drilled it right past the keeper hitting it straight down the middle scoring his 2nd goal of the season. Roma continued to dominate the game they were hitting all of their shots to perfection it was one-way traffic all game. After the 1st 45 minutes The Romans lead 2-0.
It was a very one-sided game up to the break Crotone had yet to create a real chance all game Szczesny was barley bothered all half. It was the best half of football that Roma has played all season. Spalletti made no changes going into the 2nd half he kept the same core that had been successful in the 1st half. After the break the 2nd half was underway the form took no hit over the break it seemed that Roma were displaying perfection. The excellent defensive performance that Roma displayed Sunday continued. They have been coping very well despite the absence of Rudgier and Rui. The Offence contributed the greatness they have displayed the last few weeks but in this match everything was on target there passing was nearly flawless in the game they were doing an amazing job creating scoring chances as well. Crotone couldn’t do a thing about it, the 2 teams were clearly on different levels of talent and skill. Just three minutes into the 2nd half Roma pulled off one of the goals of the season. Totti after receiving a short pass from Manolos the Roma legend launched a breathing taking ball from just behind the halfway line into Dzeko who was on the other side of the field. Dzeko than took a one touch shot on the volley hitting it over the keeper who came out to try to catch it. The keeper could only watch it roll in the back of the net. Dzeko who was heavily criticized in Sundays game had redeemed himself giving Roma the 3-0 lead as well as putting away his 3rd goal of the season. But on a side note the pass Totti made was absolutely incredible the Roma captain getting his 2nd assists in the last three games. He might be 39 years old but he sure isn’t playing like it. Roma’s strong form continued and 9 minutes later in form Dzeko would find the back of the net for the 2nd time. Salah went on a break from the middle of the pitch dribbling down field with defenders hanging on his shirt leading Roma On a 3 on 2 breakaway Salah dribbled inside the box when he found Dzeko and the big man put it straight past the keeper giving Roma a 4-0 lead. Scoring is 2nd goal game and his 4th of the season with Salah nearly perfect pass giving him the assist. As Roma continued to add on the thrashing. Roma would than sub on Emerson, Juan Jesus and Emerson for the last half hour Roma continued to get more chances but it would end as a 4-0 victory for the hosts giving Szczesny and Roma their 2nd shutout of the season.
A very convincing win for the Romans as they got right back to winning ways after the loss. The Victory earns them the 3 points taking them to 10 points on the season having a record of 3 wins one loss and one draw a very good start. The win insures they stay at 3rd in the table. Wins for Inter and Chevio takes them to 10 points as well but I don’t think those teams are concerning for Roma. After the 4 goals it makes Roma the highest scoring team this season in Serie A this season with 13 goals. After the best performance of the season Roma can only look on from here and should be ready for Inter and Napoli who they will face in the coming weeks. it’s a long season it can only go up from here..
