Late Penalty at the Death Buried Roma as Juventus Increase their Lead At Top #38

Italy SoccerScore: Atalanta 2 Roma 1 FT
-Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, Bergamo
Following International break Roma returned to Serie A action preparing for their 13th match of the campaign as they would head back out on the road against Atlanta after winning their last game against Bologna they would go into the match with great confidence desperately needing to get back into top form a lot of unimpressive performances as of late this would be a great opportunity to get back on the right track they would go in as slight favorites but Atalanta Italy’s Leicester City has done very well this season somehow finding themselves in 5th in the table the highest they have been in quite some time. It would also be a crucial game because close point difference with AC Milan who would play in the Milan Derby later in the day dropped points could mean they could lose 2nd or the gap between them an Juventus would get bigger. Unfittingly Juventus would take a big jump at top, against Atalanta Roma underperformed. Penalty specialist Diego Perotti would take the lead right before halftime Roma had a halftime lead but it didn’t last Caldara took a deflection to draw even than late in stoppage time Kessie would put a penalty past Szczensey as Atalanta would upset the Romans. Following the match AC Milan would draw with Inter to go even on points with Roma. Very disappointed performance Spalletti will surely need to go back to the drawing board after putting in one of their worst performances of the season.
Roma manager Luciano Spalletti would keep a lot of similar players in his starting 11 that started their last match against Bologna more than a week ago. Despite having not played a game in a week he kept a lot of the same team. Not surprisingly Roma went with the 4-5-1 formation it’s been the main formation they have used this season despite briefly using 4-3-3 the 5-4-1 it’s been the best formation. The backline has stayed pretty much the same since Florenzi’s ACL injury. Antione Rudiger would move over to left back after playing in the center in his previous game he has been in fine form since returning from his ACL injury appearing in just his 4th game of the season. Playing on the other side at Right back would be Bruno Peres one of the Romans best new signings this season than directing the center of the defense would be Fazio who has started nearly every game has been quite good for Roma this season after joining from Spurs in the summer the other center back would be the always effective Greek International Kostas Manolos so basically the identical defense that Roma as used since Florenzi’s injury. Lineup in front of the defense would be the defensive midfield unit. returning the lineup playing the right side would be the Dutchmen Kevin Strootmen and joining him on the other side would be the veteran Danielle De Rossi than as a potential third option Leonardo Paredes would be listed as a sub. than Roma’s attacking midfield strike force “The Three Headed Monster” would be Mohamed Salah as the rightwing he has been in good form lately scoring a hatrick in Roma’s last match this part of the midfield will change in a few weeks when Salah will leave to compete in the African Cup so it’s important they get the best out of him while they still can. Playing right wing would be Penalty Specialist Argentine International Diego Perotti than in the middle it would be the “Tasmanian Devil” Belgium International Raji Nainggolan. Than Up front as the main striker 10 goals in serie A this season the 6’4 Giant The Bosnian Tower Edin Dzeko. Than Finally in goal as their regular Wojciech Szcz?sny. It appears to be a good team but you can look one thing and be another.
Serie A would return from International Break to resume league play 2nd place A.S Roma 8-2-2 would go on the road to face Serie A’s surprise 5th place Atalanta 7-1-4 on a Sunday afternoon match. With Juventus’s big win on Saturday it was really important that Roma not slip up also because of the impact of the Milan Derby later in the day. It would be a very wet afternoon In Bergamo both teams were slipping all over the pitch. Roma have not been in the best of form lately which is especially dangerous because of the players they will lose when the African Cup starts. Early in this match they were signs of struggling early they were without a doubt the better team with more weapons but they just seemed flat despite Roma winning the possession battle Atalanta were easily the stronger team better and more scoring chances. However right before halftime Roma were gifted a chance after an excellent cross from Salah into Dzeko the Bosnian’s shot on goal was blocked when he hit Tolol’s hand the official pointed to the spot and gave a yellow card to the defender Roma’s penalty specialist Diego Perotti would step up and drill in past the keeper in the bottom left corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. It would be Perotti’s 4th goal in Serie A this season. It was quite a boring 1st half the only reasonbley positive thing Roma had going for them was there defense was playing very well together not letting up despite the number of chances given in this game. However, the counter attack just wasn’t clicking they need to figure this out and soon what’s going to happen when Salah is gone next month what are they going to do they have all the weapons to take down any team in every given game and any given night Roma is good enough to win Serie A when they are at their best they better find it quick because if they aren’t carful Juventus can run ship and Totti won’t get the farewell he deserves another poor performance adds more desperation to that there was more evidence off poor play in the 1st half it would end 1-0 Roma but they were so poor it didn’t feel like a lead. Atalanta lead in nearly every category statistically were outplaying the Giants from Atalanta would go into the half with great confidence despite being down.
Neither team had been doing anything special through the 1st half in the 2nd half it wouldn’t be much different still was a very flat game neither team presented a threat Atalanta was playing much better in the match but there was still a dullness about the match it wasn’t the slightest bit entertaining. Quite early in the 1st half Spalletti went to the bench to Bring in Stephen El Shaarawy to try to add a different offensive dimension he would come in for The Prince of Egypt Mohamed Salah I thought taking him off was a bit odd I trust the boss but Salah is Serie A’s and Roma’s best player I thought he was playing brilliant. Shortly after Roma would equalize under fluky circumstances. In the 62nd minute Atalanta went on an attack with great ball movement after two fantastic passes they sent a through ball into the box it got away from a little bit as Atalanta striker Caldera shot the ball at a very tough angle the shot took a major deflection as the keeper couldn’t stop it as Atalanta would equalized 1-1. The attack was special but the goal its self was poor very fluky you could argue that it was an own goal like I said it was a very dull game. About 10 minutes later Roma would make their 2nd switch Spalletti would take off Perotti and bring in Paredes this seamed at the time as a questionable move but looked at a decent sub Roma would suffer the consequences for it. The game would go on it continued to feel dull there were a few chances here and there for a while than all of sudden it changed Atalanta staring looking like a real threat they started putting together attack after attack all Roma could do is defend the best to their ability. Atalanta wasn’t converting their chances but they were keeping the defense busy which was the key they were going to get a good result regardless. Roma would make their final sub of the game four minutes to the end Raji would come out as Iturbe would come on to try to give Roma a late push. As time as near its end Leandro Paredes would be a crucial mistake that would cost Roma the game and a massive point. In the 90th minute during a battle inside the box Paredes tripped Gomez in the box and the official gave Atalanta the Penalty in the last minute of the game. Kessie would step up for the hosts and bury it to give Atalanta the 2-1 win receiving all 3 points at home against a very strong team.
Roma getting handed their 3rd loss of the season I’m a diehard Roma supporter but I can honestly say they were awful on Sunday. AC Milan and Inter drew in the Milan Derby meaning AC Milan is now even on points with Roma with 26th but Roma will stay in 2nd due to goal difference. With the loss Juventus increase to a 7-point lead. Roma will return to action again on Thanksgiving against Viztor Plzen in match day 5 of the Europa League a win will guarantee a place in the knockout stage. Than following that they will face bottom feeder Pescara before their big December 4th match against Lazio on Derby Day in the Derby Del Capitale. Not a good result they have struggled away lately time to get back to work and try to turn it around a gloomy feeling surrounding the Roma supporters at the moment.
