Dzeko Leads the Charge as Roma Teaches Fiorentina A Lesson #55

week 33Score: A.S Roma 4 A.F.C Fiorentina 0 FT
-Stadio Olimpico

Following Roma’s dramatic midweek Coppa Itaila Quarterfinal victory over Cesena Roma would return to action in Serie A. As the Giallorossi Prepared for their 23rd match of their campaign as they welcomed The Viola to the Stadio Olimpico for a chance to get revenge on Fiorentina a team who they lost to in Florence earlier this year under controversial circumstances. It would be a hugely important game due to Roma’s blunder in their last Serie A match losing to Sampdoria 3-2 as they lost real ground in the title race . So a loss or draw in this match would basically throw away any chance at the title. Fiorentina was not a team to be taken lightly but Roma was very much up to the challenge. Roma’s Edin Dzeko would stay hot as he would give Roma the lead shortly before the end of the 1st half. Roma would just be getting warmed up in the 2nd half Roma would rip through the Viola defense like tissue paper Fazio would double the lead it was one of the best performances in quite sometime. It wouldn’t end there Raja Nainggolan would make it three shorty before Dzeko finished them off with a second goal as they would cruise to 4-0 win. A dominating performance for the Giallorossi as well as a massive win for the hosts they would extend their home win streak to 13 games still four points behind Juventus but they are back in business.
The big news this week was the return of Roma star Mohamed Salah after being gone for the African cup of nations in which he lead Egypt to the final but eventually fell to Cameron in the final. Despite losing Mohamed Salah registered 2 goals and three assists as he proved to be one of the best players in the competition as he was named to the team of the tournament. He returned to Spalletti’s Roma side this week he wouldn’t play in the game but sat on the bench as a sub. By my surprise there was also transfer developments this week despite the window closing last week, a player Roma were heavily linked with throughout the window was Franck Kessie of Atalanta, in the final days of the window according to reports he had apparently agreed to a deal with Roma but it never materialized however this week Atalanta captain Gianpaolo Bellini believes he has signed with Roma. It’s possible they did all of it behind closed doors and he coming in the summer but we will find out in the summer I suppose. Roma boss Luciano Spalletti once again went with 3-4-2-1 as it seems like its Roma’s best formation this season after experimenting with 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 but I’d say 3-4-2-1 has been the best. Woji Szcz?sny would start in goal as usual. The three defenders would remain near identical to Roma’s previous game. Antione Rudiger would be the left back Kosta Manolas on the right and Fazio deploying the center back position as he would replace Juan in the starting 11. Roma have been pretty solid back there so I agree with Spalletti’s decision to keep a similar team in the back. The center midfield was also pretty similar as well Emerson would replace Mario Rui as the left wide midfielder on the opposite side would be as usual Bruno Peres playing as the wide right midfielder than the center midfielding duo of Danielle De Rossi coming in for Leonardo Paredes and Kevin Strootman basically roma’s usual suspects . Than in front of the center midfield it would be the attacking midfielding pair, on the left wing making back to back starts Stephen El Shaarawy the Italian has given Roma an injection on energy off the bench recently so he has been given another start. Than opposite to EL Shaarawy on the right wing replacing Diego Perotti would be one of Roma most in form players this season Raja Nainggolan. Than Finally up front as the main striker the big man 6’4 RED HOT Striker from Bosnia Edin Dzeko, he has scored in three games in a row he leads Serie A with 15 goals this season and has 22 goals in all competitions only Luiz Suarez and Leo Messi have more goals this season.
2nd Place Roma would return home briefly after their loss on the road to Sampdoria last weekend on match day 22. They would welcome AFC Fiorentina to the Stadio Olimpico for their second meeting of the season between Roma and Fiorentina. Roma would be looking for revenge in this game after they wrongfully lost their first meeting 1-0 in Florence in September when Fiorentina’s late goal had two players offside on the play, it was a very controversial. Roma were given a chance to pick up a win against them. It would likely be a make or break game for Roma’s title challenge. A Draw or loss would throw their small chance at the Scudetto away. with Juventus having a four point lead, dropped points would cause more major damage to the title race. This game would be absolutely massive easily the most important game of Roma’s season still having a slight chance at the title a loss would ruin that. Roma would be going up against a very good team just slightly out of the European places with plenty of quality players in the squad the Viola attack has been very dangerous at times this season. The team from Florence has produced many great performances this season; Paulo Sousa continues to do a tremendous job with this team. However Roma would be the slight favorites going into this game they have made the Stadio Olimpico a fortress as they have won a Roma record 13 games in a row at home and happen to have the best Striker in the land that can give Fiorentina all kinds of problems. After a week a preparing for the match both team were ready for this Tuesday night fixture in Rome. Much like many of the games this season Roma controlled the pace of the game from the start. It seemed pretty evenly match but Roma’s attacks looked a bit sharper Emerson created the games 1st chance early in the first half. Rudiger from deep in Roma territory hit a deep cross that was controlled by Emerson on the opposite side of the field, the Brazilian would hit a shot from the corner right outside the box a beautifully hit ball than just missed. Shortly after Fiorentina got their best chance of the half and arguably the best chance they got all game. A member of the Viola defense hit a deep cross near the Roma box. Szcz?sny came out to defend it Olic would tap the ball over his head but Fazio would bail out the Roman keeper heading the ball out. After that it would be all Roma for the rest of the half despite Fiorentina have multiple shots Roma would have all the quality chances. El Shaarawy would come close when a through ball was sent to him but the timing was bit off so he only got a foot to it. Roma continued to threaten the goal and it was forcing the Viola defense to play on their toes. Roma would than create yet another chance, Raja Nainggolan near the box send a stunning pass to Bruno who was just inside the box Bruno than put the moves on the defense before striking the ball but the keeper was able to get a hand to it. Roma was really making it difficult on Fiorentina it was clear domination by the Giallorossi. Fiorentina continued to try to hold them off but it the 38th minute Roma punished them. Daniele De Rossi from a long way out sent a ball into the penalty area where Dzeko caught it with his chest barley onside. The striker ran in front of the defense creating a 1 on 1 with the keeper and the Bosnian hit it with his first touch putting it in the bottom left corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. It would be Edin Dzeko’s 16th goal in Serie and 24th goal of the season he has now scored in 4 straight games. Nothing else to report as the first half ended with Roma having the 1-0 advantage.
Roma coming off a great first half Roma would try to continue the keep up their dominating play. Fiorentina in the first half were barely even apart of the game as far as I’m concerned they did nothing but cause mistakes. Luciano Spalletti decided against making any changes as he would keep his same core for obvious reasons they have been doing so well so far. Roma remained in full control of the game it was the best Roma have looked in 2017 they continued to show their quality the Midfield was breaking down the defense repeatedly they were having very little trouble getting into scoring position. Fiorentina tried to defend the best they could but yet again they were broken down, great quality shown by Roma. Roma were given a Free kick from the outside of the box the distance was about 30meters out Roma Captain Danielle De Rossi would step up to take it. De Rossi sent a brilliant cross into the box near Roma’s two tallest players Dzeko (6’4) and Fazio (6’5) both players attempted to hit the ball through the air. Fazio got a good early jump using his height to get up on the ball as he blasted it past the keeper as the ball hit the post and went in to double Roma’s advantage to 2-0. It would be Fazio’s 2nd goal of the season Roma now with a 2-0 lead would just continue to apply the pressure on their back 3. Fiorentina had a few chances to score but Roma was still in firm control the Fiorentina defense just wasn’t doing enough Roma was finding it quite easy they have been pretty unbeatable at home but despite that it seemed like they were finding it too easy. Fiorentina usually is a quality side only a few points out for 6th so it was surprising how difficult they were finding it. Roma continued to add on to their total they were continuing to rip apart Fiorentina’s defense. Than As Roma would score one of the best team work goals you will see this season. In the 75th minute it happened El Shaarawy starting dribbling the ball deep in their own half; he was well defended so he passed the ball back to Emerson as El Shaarawy started running up the pitch. Emerson received the pass than hit a deep cross near the middle of the pitch. Where Dzeko was Dzeko hit the ball with a once touch pass to Danielle De Rossi, De Rossi than hit a perfect through ball to El Shaarawy who was running up the pitch to create a fantastic counter attack also sprinting up the other side at full speed was Raja Nainggolan. Basically creating a two on two break El Shaarawy who had the ball on the wing crossed in to the box where Raja was practically alone. The Belgium international controlled it on his first touch than tapped it in the ball of the net with his smooth touch of the ball placing it in the bottom right corner to make it 3-0. It was an absolutely brilliant display of team chemistry to get the quick fire goal on a 5-pass counter attack. Brilliant from all parts but the of the goal but the position and run of El Shaarawy created the master piece. The Italian midfielder made the pass than immediately started running down the wing which put him in exact right position when De Rossi got the ball El Shaarawy was right in plain sight open. Which united the counter attack than lead to the goal than he made the perfect cross than led to the goal getting a very well earned assist Raja got the goal but EL Shaarawy did the gritty work. All people involved deserve credit the speed of Raja ability to get up the pitch was also spectacular as well as the Emerson and Dzeko and De Rossi passes it was a team effort all around.. It would be Raja Nainggolan’s 7th goal of the season Raja has been one of Roma’s very best players this season. Shortly after the goal the catalyst Stephen El Shaarawy would be subbed off, Francesco Totti would come on to replace him for the last 10 minutes making his 774th Roma appearance. Two minutes after the substitution Roma would take advantage of a massive mistake to pile on another goal. In the 83rd minute the Fiorentina back three suffered another blunder Carlos Sanchez after receiving a pass attempted to back pass it to Astroti but it went horrible wrong as a Astroti fell down trying to control it and in came Dzeko to run down the bouncing ball has he tried his best to control it before nicking it in the bottom left corner to finish them off getting his 2nd goal of the game making it 4-0. Today it’s been unfair to Florentina’s Romanian goalkeeper Tatarusanu who did all he could but the back line was so bad it didn’t even matter. It would be Dzeko’s 17th in the league and 24th total the big Bosnian now has more goals than Luis Suarez; Leo Messi is the only player with more goals this season. Dzeko has been nothing short of world class this season. After the goal Leandro Paredes and new signing Clement Greiner would get the run out before the game ended 4-0 as the Giallorossi would pick of the three points.
It was one of Roma’s best performances of the season in their convincing 4-0 against a very good team. It would take Roma to 50Pts on the season with Juventus win later on it takes they lead at top to 7 points. It really looks like it’s going to be very difficult to catch them now but they are still in the good position to win two trophies with the upcoming fixtures in the Europa League against Villarreal and Lazio in the Coppa Itaila Semifinal. Despite that Luciano Spalletti said that The New England Patriots 25-Point comeback in the Super Bowl inspired him to have the belief that his team can still win the Scudetto. After this win they travel to Calabria to meet up with 19th place Crotone for the second time this season looking for a season sweep. Than the fun really begins after the Crotone match they will play travel to Spain for their 1st leg of the Europa league round of 32 against Villarreal. Than after the conclusion of that match they will follow that up with a home game against Torino than will face 4th place Inter Milan away so a lot of big matches coming up. The title race may be over but Roma will win something this season, they will play in the Coppa Itaila final mark my words.
