Dzeko’s Scores as Roma Get Revenge #51

Week 28

Score: A.S Roma 1 Cagliari 0 FT
-Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Following Roma’s midweek 4-0 victory against Sampdoria in the Round of 16 Coppa Itaila. The Giallorossi would continue their crusade in Serie A with there 21st match of their campaign. They would face Cagliari for the 2nd time this season after blowing a 2-0 lead last time only getting a draw at the beginning of the season Roma were looking for Revenge in an important fixture for the landscape of the title race between Roma and Juventus with Juventus loss last week he has given Roma the momentum now only one point out of 1st with a win. Roma were very wasteful in the 1st half of the game but not all games can be easy they would get into position they just weren’t very clinical in front of goal with Napoli’s win dropped points would opened up the title race to three teams in the 2nd half Roma would get the revenge Dzeko would score his 20th goal of the season as Roma would narrowly win getting the three points as they continue to put immense pressure on Juventus as the title race intensifies.
There will be more news this week; Kosta Manolas would continue to be the subject of transfer rumors as his move to Inter seems to be a done deal. They have started to open negations with the Greece International as the Nerazzurri look for a 42 million summer move for the defender they have apparently agreed on principal but Chelsea has also come in for his signature who will fight Inter For the center back in the summer however nothing is definite its possible he could remain in Rome beyond this year’s campaign I will continue to give more information as the story develops. Roma has announced this week that none of their star players will be leaving this January Raja Nainggolan, Manolas, Rudiger, Strootman etc. all of the stars will remain at the club at least until next year. Rudiger spoke out this week about this very issue regarding amid Chelsea interest this is what he had to say ““Chelsea? All I can say is that Conte is a great Coach, but I chose to stay with Roma. We’re fighting on three fronts and we have to win a trophy. The Scudetto? I hope we can play for everything in the second match with Juventus. I’m here to win; I’m obsessed with winning like [Luciano] Spalletti is” Rudiger told Sky Italia. This is a big deal Rudiger is one of Serie A’s best it’s important that they keep as many star players as they possible can. Because of the financial situation going on they might be forced to sell someone in the summer but at the moment he appears Rudiger prefers a Roma stay. Also it was reveled this week that the club plans to give Raja Nainggolan a new contract that will make him the highest paid player on the team. Roma have abandoned their previous targets they’re attention has shifted to Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel who is also been tracked by Liverpool but the France International prefers Roma as he wishes to stay in Italy he seems to be their lone target at the moment more transfer news to come in the next few weeks as the window comes to a close. They continued to go with the 3-4-2-1 formation they have this has been their main formation lately after using the 4-5-1 most of the season. The change could be due to the amount of injures or the absence of Salah. The goal keeper would remain the same for their last game in Serie A as Szcz?sny would get another start after getting the night of in the Italian cup as Allison was given the start on Thursday. There was similar three at the back from their previous game with Antonio Rudiger at left back, Kosta Manolas at right back replacing Juan Jesus in the starting 11 and the identity of the Roman defense Fazio at the center back position. There would be the set of four midfielders controlling the center of the Roman midfield. On the left wing it would be Emerson returning to the startling 11 to replace Mario Rui than on the opposite side controlling the right side would be once again Bruno Peres the Brazilian has started the majority of the games this season rotating between defender and midfield. Than in the center it would be the pair of Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman they Dutchmen would replace Leandro Paredes in the starting 11. Than up front the attacking midfield duo of Raja Nainggolan as the right winger and Diego Perotti as the left winger Diego would come in the lineup for Stephen El Shaarawy. Finally up front would be the always dangerous Edin Dzeko as the striker. Spalletti made very minor changes but put on a tremendous team none the less.
It would be 2nd place Roma remaining at home to face 11th place Cagliari as Roma would welcome them to the Stadio Olimpico on a Sunday afternoon.

The two teams had previously played in match day 2 a game Roma would like to forgot as Roma threw away a 2-0 lead to only get a 2-2 draw from that game. Roma were looking for revenge on the mid-table side. Roma would go into the game with great confidence winning their previous 3 games in the league as well as coming off a 4-0 win in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals. For more than pride sake it was a very important game with Napoli winning earlier in the day they were now even on points with Roma, with the importance of keeping the pressure on Juventus it was very important that they not drop points dropped point could open up the race for Napoli. Roma were also on the verge for club record 13th consecutive wins at home. It was a Very important game for several reasons as you can see they would go into the game as favorites but they would have to play their best for a good result as Cagliari have proven they can be a threat this season. After hours of speculation prior to the match it was time to kick off. Cagliari got a wonderful chances less than a minute into the match but the Roman defense was in top shape it was Cagliari’s only shot of the 1st half very soon after the tide turned as Roma were on the front as they were winning the possession battle as well as dominating on the stat sheet they were very much in control of the game. Roma’s first chance of the game in the 5 minutes in and they had a very chances after that but there first real chance came in the 22nd minute when Bruno Peres sent in a ball for Dzeko in the box but Dzeko slightly mistimed the cross as he only barely got a foot on it as it went wide a brilliant pass from Bruno it’s a shame Dzeko couldn’t finish it. Shortly after Roma would have another chance with Dzeko once again off a corner in good space Dzeko headed it accidently from the look of it but picked up his own rebound and took a short just barely missing the target. He missed but it was a tremendous chance Roma were in clear control the ball stayed on the Cagliari side the most of the game Roma’s opposition failed to really do anything Roma would continue to push a create more chances Roma were a bit wasteful with their chances as it remained goalless going into the half it would be 0-0.
In the 2nd half Spalletti decided not to make any changes sticking with the same core. A lot of attacking football played by roma but were unable to make good on their chances very one sided performance thus far it would stay very much the same on the pitch it continued to be a very one sided affair Cagliari just didn’t show up didn’t have a shot on target in the entire games just came out flat. It would be only a matter of time before break through. In the 55th minute Roma would break the deadlock. Roma would go on the attack Strootman gave a quick pass to Rudiger who passed to Perotti who gave a one touch pass to Bruno than gave it back to Perotti than sent it out back to Rudiger who was in open space The German International would than cross the ball brilliantly into the box for Dzeko, the striker and a Cagliari defender were holding on to each other but Dzeko got his foot to it putting it in the back of the net as both players fell down to give Roma the 1-0 lead it would take his season total 14 in Serie a and 20th goal of the season in all competitions. Dzeko has without a doubt proven to be one of the best players in Serie A this season completely rejuvenating his poor form from a season ago. After Dzeko’s goal Roma continued to push at the Cagliari goal as the attack continued to give their defense problems. Diego Perotti started to make his presence felt shortly after the goal he came alive he would go on the counter attack finding a shot in the box in a 1 on 1 situation but the keeper saved it but Roma wouldn’t be discouraged as they kept the pressure on. Roma were on the brink of 2-0 in the 73rd minute Kevin Strootman hit a perfect through ball into the box to Bruno who tapped it into Dzeko he would score however it would be disallowed as the striker was called offside. Shortly after Roma would have another superb chance. Perotti ran down the wing like a mad man feeding the ball to Emerson who it a beautifully taken cross into Dzeko. He headed the ball and got a lot of power to it but was unable to find the back of the net but it was hit with so much power that he caused the keeper to drop it temporarily Bruno hit the ball off the bounce but the angle wasn’t great so he misfired. Than late in the game with the game coming to an end Roma had another fantastic chance off a free kick Danielle De Rossi smashed it at the keeper but the keeper got a hand to it however off the save Raja Nainggolan hit a first touch nearly scoring the Roman attack was unstoppable they could have easily put 5 past them. Roma would have one last chance in the 83rd minute displaying a lot of team work with a lot of short passing ultimately leading to an Emerson cross into Dzeko who placed a powerful header in the top corner but hit the bar the Bosnian was visibly disappointed not to score. After the last few minutes didn’t provide much the referee would blow the whistle as Giallorossi picked up an important three points at home.

With the performance Roma made it 4 wins in a row in Serie a and 5 straight wins in all competitions as Cagliari never turned up they were one of the worst teams Roma have played this season. Also with the win Roma make it a club record 13th consecutive wins at home, the Stadio Olimpico has become a fortress this season. Roma back to only a one point from the top of the table as Juventus has all pressure now Roma also took a three point lead on 3rd place Napoli. They will return to action on Sunday to play Sampdoria a team they recently smashed in the Coppa Itaila to continue their home stretch they should have a lot of confidence moving forward. They also will play their quarterfinal match up in the Coppa Itaila against Serie B side Cesena shortly after they’re match against Sampdoria. Roma continue to play well they have continuously proven that they can get results without Mohammed Salah.
