Stars Rested as Roma fall to Villarreal but Advance to the Round of 16 #59

Week 37

Score: Villarreal 1 0 A.S Roma (Roma wins 4-1 On AGG)
Stadio Olimpico
Following Roma’s victories over Torino in the league on Sunday and Villarreal in Europe League Round of 32 on Thursday. Roma would return to European action to play Roma’s second leg of their Europa league tie against Spanish side Villarreal in a mid-week fixture; Roma won the first leg 4-0 so it was ultimately a garbage game with a 4-0 lead there was no coming back for them. So given that fact many of Roma’s star players did not start the game to get ready for the Inter Milan game this Sunday. Roma didn’t play their best game but they didn’t need to play brilliantly to advance they just had to get a decent enough result to get through. Roma wouldn’t show the same dominance level in this match; in the opening 20 minutes Roma faced a blunder Roma defender Thomas Vermaelen while defending accidently passed the ball to Borre trying to clear the ball out allowing him to score one of the easiest goals this campaign. There wasn’t much action for the remainder of the game on the Roma Side of things however Roma Goalkeeper Allison played spectacularly. Roma suffered an unfortunate blow near the end with Rudiger receiving a second yellow as he saw Red near the end of the game. Roma would fall to Villarreal but it didn’t matter as they still win 4-1 over the two legs as Roma will advance through to the Round of 16 as Stockholm comes closer as Olympique Lyonnais await.

A few things happened this week but still were a pretty light week of news not all that much has been happening since the transfer window closed. Roma winger Diego Perotti has decided that he will leave in to 2019, He plans to play for the Giallorossi next season and the season following after that he desires to return to Argentina to play for Argentine side Boca Juniors. The Franck Kessie race has opened up the last few weeks as United and Chelsea also very interested in the Roma target. Also Luciano Spalletti hinted that he could leave if Totti isn’t offered a contract extension, but I suspect he will be offered a new deal if he wants to continue to play. Also this week Dortmund and Napoli have joined the race to Arsenal Loanee Woiech Szcz?sny it appears that Roma could likely go with Allison as their number one next season but I wouldn’t count out Roma bringing him back either but it’s very likely he will be at another club next season his value has certainly gone up this season. Luciano Spalletti would make a lot of changes to the side prior to the game in fact 7 Starters would be left out of the starling 11 due to their 4 goal lead going into the game. There would be no change in formation as they remained in the 3-4-2-1 at the back it would be Juan Jesus at left-back Kosta Manolas at right-back and Thomas Vermaelen at center-back. Than it would be Mario Rui at left wingback than in the center of the defensive midfield would be Kevin Strootman and Leonardo Paredes than as the right wingback opposite to Rui would be Bruno Peres. In front of the defensive midfield would be Diego Perotti coming off injury taking the leftwing and Stephen El Shaarawy taking the right wing. Than taking the long striker role wouldn’t be Dzeko this time as he was given rest for inter it would be Roma legend Francesco Totti making his 775 appearance for the club. Than finally in goal would be Roma’s #2 Europa League goalkeepers Allison making his 11th start. Many of Roma’s stars would be rested for this game.
It would be the second leg of the Round of 32 in the Europa league a match between one of Italy’s most in form sides Roma against Spanish strugglers Villarreal. In the first leg it was disastrous for one side and brilliant for the other. The Romans handled Villarreal with an amazing 4-0 victory in Spain. Roma have been pegged as the favorites to lift the trophy and convincingly so after the big win in the first leg Roma certainly have the team to do it with Roma playing as well as they are. Having one of the hottest strikers in world football at their disposal in Edin Dzeko (29 goal in 35 games) as well as other top quality players this game doesn’t mean very much with having already a 4-0 lead in the tie as Roma just need to hold them off on the other hand Villarreal had a mountain to club Spalletti gave several players rested as it didn’t look like they were needed as they were given necessary rest as Roma will need their fresh legs on Sunday when they face Inter Milan away at the San Siro. Both teams were ready as the game would get underway in a do or die game. Unlike a large portion of Roma’s games this season in the league and domestically Roma wouldn’t control the game from the start it was very much in Villarreal’s hands they had the advantage. Allison would be world class in the game saving everything he could; to be honest there wasn’t a lot of action during the game it was kind of a boring game over all. In the 15th minute Roma suffered a massive blunder Roma defender Thomas Vermaelen gave Villarreal a gift while trying to clear the ball he accidentally passed the ball to Borre who took the ball and put it in the back of the net to give Villarreal the lead. Horrendous defending displayed on the play Roma were just flat in this games which is understandable due to their starters being rested but still they should of done a lot better than they did it ended 1-0 Villarreal after 45 minutes.
In the second half Roma would bring on Antonio Rudiger for Manolas Roma had a dreadful half only having one shot the entire game they were looking to improve it in anyway thy can despite still leading on aggregate 4-1 it was important for them to continue to protest their lead over the two games. Villarreal continued impress Borre though he was in for a second one but Allison denied him Allison was top draw in this game. After a Rudiger early yellow they had a chance in the 53rd minute Diego Perotti gave roma a chance finally Diego Perotti right footed shot from outside the box was saved near the top of the goal. Roma was starting to look a little bit better. There wasn’t a lot of action in the second half either a part from a few saves from Allison. The game got a little better in the back half of the second half mostly because a lot of the shots being taken were getting blocked it was a common occurrence for both teams. Late in the game Totti came close with a shot from the middle of the box but it was a little too high but he was nearly in. not long after Roma got hit with a major blow as Rudiger saw red after picking up another yellow he will miss the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 match against Lyon. Villarreal had three more chances to break through the defense but once again Allison denied them. It was a cut and dry boring game with a serious lack of excitement but Roma did enough to go through. They did the Europa League draw after the games had concluded Roma will get a firm test playing against Lyon but I truly believe if Roma beats Lyon they will go on to win the whole thing as Lyon is the most difficult opponent left in the Europa league. They return to Serie action Sunday to face Inter Milan another test. For your information I want to personally apologize about this article this game was complete garbage so it was very difficult to write this
