Score: A.S Roma 3 Genoa 2 FT
Stadio Olimpico, Roma
Following Roma’s recent victories against Ac Milan, Juventus and Chevio Roma would prepare for their 38th and final match of this season’s Serie A campaign as they would host Genoa and welcome them to a sellout crowd in Rome for Francesco Totti’s Farwell as he would play for Roma for the very last time. Roma would be looking to make it two wins out of two having beaten them midseason 1-0. It would be their 3rd season sweep in a row. A win would get them second place as the battle for the final automatic champions league place between Napoli and Roma would come down to the last day as simply they just needed to win to return to the champions league. Any dropped points could be costly as Napoli is in great form playing against a Sampdoria side in poor form. With Totti’s last game Roma go into the match as strong favorites as they wish to give the legend a great sendoff but you never know in football Genoa could pull off a shocker. It didn’t start great for Roma as Genoa 16-Year old Pietro Pellegri scored in the opening five minutes to give Genoa a 1-0 lead very early in the game becoming the youngest scorer in Serie A history. Roma didn’t want to drop the ball on Totti’s final game in the Roma shirt as Roma would hit right back less than 10 minutes later as Edin Dzeko scored his 29th goal of the season to make to equalize making it 1-1 passing a Roma legend for most league goals in a campaign. Roma would go on to dominate the rest of the first half with several near goals but after the first 45 minutes it would be 1-1. In the second half Francesco Totti came on for the very last time as Roma would continue to look like the better side but he stayed the same as the danger of losing 2nd came under threat than finally with under 30minutes to go Dannielle De Rossi would find the back of the net to give Roma the 2-1 lead late. However Genoa somehow would hit back equalizing the game several minutes later with Darko Lazović scoring to make it 2-2. With not that much time left to go Roma then slipped back into 3rd. It would just be destiny that Roma would win to give Totti send off to an historic career when Substitute Diego Perotti Scored in the 90th against him former team to give Roma the 3-2 lead. The match would end 3-2 to Roma a dramatic win for the Romans as they would get there return to the champions league to give Totti an amazing send off. Totti came out on the pitch after the match to say good bye to the Roma fans for the very last time leaving in tears.
This week there was a lot of breaking news surrounding Roma with Totti’s retirement headlining it. As the Captain prepares for an emotional farewell it is still rumored that Totti will become a Sporting Director with the club working under New Director Monchi however it is unclear if he will take the job. It has been reported that Spalletti will quit Roma as I have said last week. Now it has come more clear of who may take over for the Italian when he leaves. Sassuolo boss Di Francesco is strong a favorite to take over the reins he is a former Roma player and took Sassuolo from Serie B to Europe is a very talented young manger he would be a good appointment for Roma given the options that are available Roma can’t do much better. Spalletti has backed him for the job saying “I hope one of Di Francesco as the next Roma coach, because he knows the environment and he has the human qualities you need, as well as the coaching skills” he also gave tribute to his time in Roma saying good bye to the media as Roma coach saying “I never cut my ties with Roma completely, even when I was in Russia,” the former Zenit coach added. “I always kept tabs on the team’s results and how they were doing. I think we can say we worked well. “In this game it comes down to what happens at certain moments and the decisive results, but the main thing is that I leave a very strong Roma side – a team with some great players. President Jim Pallotta comes from a different sports background and he’s shown that he wants to invest and achieve great things. He wants to build Stadio Della Roma – and people cast doubt over whether he’s doing it for personal interest? As I’ve said before, let’s build this stadium. It would make everything easier for Roma. Italian football as a whole would benefit but it would be especially beneficial for those who love this club. It’s key to so many things: greater revenue, more work for more people and more enjoyment for the fans going to the stadium.” Beyond this season Spalletti is very likely to heading to Inter Milan beyond his departure as the Inter board has scheduled a meeting with the Roma boss. There was a massive deal discussed with Kevin Strootman to extend his stay he would snub Manchester United to sign a 5-Year deal the Dutch International made 34 appearances this season scoring 4 goals and 7 assists been exceptional the last few weeks. This is what he had to say after signing the new deal “I’m very happy. It’s a special moment. Roma always supported me when I was out of action with a serious injury: the directors, fans, players and coaches helped me throughout, so I’m very happy to stay here I really like the city, the team, the football and Italy overall. There were some rumors in the press, but I have a good relationship with the directors and we were often in contact. I knew a long time ago I’d be staying here” a very good order of business for Roma hopefully the first of many players extending their stay with Danielle De Rossi expecting to be given a deal in the coming weeks. Roma have decided to target Barcelona’s Rafinha over the summer. Roma have also redirected their interest in Benfica defender Victor Lindelof as they attempt to challenge Manchester United for his signature. It also has been confirmed that Roma will activate Fazio’s purchase option and the center back will join Roma permanently this summer the club also plans to make Bruno Peres’s deal permanently as well. Also it appears Roma’s on loan Goalkeeper Woich Szczęsny will be staying in Serie A but it won’t be at Roma as he will be heading to Naples to play for Napoli as Arsenal and Napoli are discussing a summer transfer. Finally prior to Totti’s final match legends across football have shown appreciation for Roma’s #10. Luciano Spalletti would go with a 4-2-3-1 only making one change from last week against Genoa. In goal for possibly the final time for Roma is Serie A’s Golden Glove winner Woich Szczęsny his final game of his two year loan from Arsenal a player that will surely be missed. The back four would stay the same with Emerson at Left back Rüdiger at Right back and Fazio and Manolas as the center backs. In the defensive Midfield would be the duo of Kevin Strootman and Danielle De Rossi who has a contract expiring at the end of the season but I hope he does come back as serves at captain. In front of the defensive midfield would be the attacking midfield unit of Raja Nainggolan coming in for Leoandro Paredes playing in the center. He would be joined by El Shaarawy on the left wing and Mouhamed Salah on the right wing. Finally up front as the Striker would be the Golden Boot leader Edin Dzeko; a fantastic side surly good enough to do the business and get into the champions league Totti will come on in this game off the bench.
We are finally here as we have reached the last match day of Serie A this season. With one game to go and still everything at stake just needed a win to confirm Champions League football as they will go straight into the group stage Roma are at 84 points with Napoli trailing by one at 83 points as the battle for second will take its conclusion Roma will be taking on Genoa for the second time looking for a season sweep against them while Napoli will look to do the same against Sampdoria having to hope for a Roma collapse which seems very unlikely. This game is more than just trying to win the race to second it is much more than that has we have a sellout crowd on our hands, tonight its Roma Legend Francesco Totti’s last ever game in the Roma shirt one of the most respected players of all time he has been Roma through in through been with the club for 25 years a true loyalist could of left numerus times but stayed with us despite not winning a ton. It being The Last Chapter Of Francesco Totti they will not be another athlete to have his impact in a Really long time Futbol/Soccer fans have more of an intense and Affectionate Relationship with our players than any other sports we are more emotionally connected with them. Kobe left the Lakers people were sad Peyton left Denver People were Sad Jeter left Yankees People were Sad but this situation is just different. When Totti plays his last ever game for Roma today I will feel emotionally disconnected from everything there will be more than just Tears you have to understand that Totti’s Relationship with Roma is unlike anything were seen in sports history. He’s not Just a Hero he’s not just a Legend He’s a GOD not any good he is thee GOD He will always been THE KING OF ROME. I’m not even sure what I’ll do with myself after his retirement he is everything to me and to all of us we ALL SHOULD BOW DOWN to Not Just the Legend but the Man Not King Arthur Much Stronger not King George Much Bigger Not KING JAMES More Loyal The Great KING TOTTI from fan to Legend an From Legend to GOD. He won’t be remembered for the Number of Titles but His Devotion to a City and a Team Unlike anything we have seen before. Many players across the globe have shown their admiration for Roma’s #10. So this game means a lot more than just getting second this season. Genoa will wear testimonial Genoa Totti kits out of respect of the legend as the #10 will be patched on their sleeve. According to Luciano Spalletti he will play a good chunk of the game as Totti is likely to make a second half appearance. As Far as Form goes Roma are far superior as Genoa only recently confirmed their safety coming off a really bad run of form as they got dragged into the relegation battle in the last few months after being mid table early in the season highlighting that was a 5-0 loss to already relegated Pescara. On the other hand Roma are in a much better run a form having a career year looking like one of the best Roma Teams in a long time they have won three on the bounce as they are one win away from getting automatic entrance to the champions’ league group stage. Roma looking to get there second win against Genoa this season after a narrow 1-0 win against them earlier this season. Over the last 10 games against Roma it doesn’t look good on paper in the last 10 meetings between the two teams Roma are unbeaten in the last 10 winning 5 on the bounce against Genoa. Gena doesn’t have much to play for while everything is on the line for Roma on Totti day. Roma should be too much for them as their attacking unit has scored 87 goals this season on the verge of being Roma’s highest scoring team ever. Also their Striker Edin Dzeko has the Golden boot within his reach as he as 28 league goals leading Napoli’s Mertens by one goal. He is scores in this game it would make Dzeko him Roma’s highest scorer in a single season he already is Roma’s highest scorer in all competitions with 38 goals. Also if they win not only will they get champions league but it will take them to 87 points which would be the most ever. I think it’s just destiny that they will win to give Totti a sendoff as he prepares to play for the very last time.
After preparation for the game both teams would be ready to kick off in Roma before the match started there would be a moment of silence for the victims from the Manchester attack this past week. After that the match would kick off on Totti day as he plays his final game as it would be packed and loud Stadio Olimpico as the battle for second kicked off as Napoli were playing at the same time. Early in Roma controlled possession but it just takes one chance to score the day did not start in the way the Roma fans would have liked as Totti’s farewell victory came under threat. In the 4th minute Genoa would bury their first shot of the game when Darko Lazovic sent a through ball into Genoa’s teenager Pietro Pellegri and the 16-year old put the ball past Szczęsny putting it into the bottom corner to give Genoa a shock lead as Genoa led 1-0 after just a few minutes . At 16 years old he Pietro Pellegri becomes one of the youngest goal scorers in Serie A history. However Roma did seem up for the challenge as they started to attack the Genoa defense giving a rapid response Dzeko had a chance not long after the goal when Strootman send a bullet pass into Dzeko; the Bosnian would strike the ball hitting the side post pulling the keeper out of position Dzeko would than a apply a second touch stomaching the ball into the back of the next to equalize making it 1-1. It would be Edin Dzeko’s 29th league goal of the season as the Serie A Capocannoniere aka the Golden boot looks surely his. It would also be his 39th goal in all competitions this season his highest total as well the most goal’s in a season for a Roma player. It would also put him in 5th place in the running for the golden shoe across Europe’s top leagues only Leo Messi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bas Dost,Robert Lewandowski have more points. Play would resume Roma would seem a little more in control now as they were back in control of the game. However Roma would be hit with some devastation Emerson after slightly colliding into a Genoa midfielder hit the ground in a lot of pain as his knee appeared to turn the wrong way the Italian was in immense pain as he would have to be taken off with a stretcher as Roma would be forced into a sub. After the game it was revealed that he had a Torn ACL his surgery was successful as he will start a rehabilitation program in the summer. Mario Rui would come in to replace him making his possible last appearance for Roma. When play resumed Roma went right after it with Kevin Strootman as the catalyst again setting up a brilliant chance as the midfield sent a bullet of a through ball into Dzeko to the left of the box a great scoring chance to Dzeko but his shot it was miraculously saved. Shortly after the referee made a major mishap as on a corner Santiago Gentility tackled Dzeko into the box as no penalty was called was easily a yellow it wouldn’t be the last time in this game he would play dirty in this game. It would just be the start of the Roman attack they were just getting warmed up Kevin Strootman would drop another dime towards Stephen EL Shaarawy sending him a through ball into the box not long after El Shaarawy would use his speed to get there as he would take a near perfect shot but just barely missed to the right it had looked like they were in for a second. As we got deeper into the first half Roma would get yet another good chance with El Shaarawy getting into position once again he really has done exceptionally well the second half of the season. He would receive a cross form Rui but his header went wide. At the very end of the half Dzeko would get two good chances to try to increase his goal total. The dime dropper Kevin Strootman sent a cross into the big man however his shot from very close range would be saved. Then with only a few minutes to go Genoa finally got another chance when Raffaele Palladino sent a cross into the center of the box to Darko Lazovic his just header came close but just missed. In the first half it would end as a 1-1 score line.
Dzeko Equalizes to Score his 39th Goal of he Season to Clinch the Golden Boot
The second half would be set to take off with their season still on the line Napoli were currently winning their game 2-0 against Sampdoria meaning Roma needed to score the second half it had looked like they would base on the chances they had in the first half. Totti was likely to make an appearance shortly but remained on the bench to start the second half. Roma were doing a really good job so far just couldn’t quite score Strootman being the stand out star so far. Roma got right back where they left off as they would get a chance early in the second half. When Mario Rui sent a cross into the middle of the box to find Dzeko despite the good effort his shot would miss to the right. Genoa wasn’t backing down either when substitute Nicola Ninkovic’s long ranger was saved by Szczęsny. Than in the 54th minute the moment we have all been waiting for arrived as long time captain and Roma legend would make 786th and final appearance as we would see him for the very last time. The sold out Stadio Olimpico erupted as Capaitno the King Rome came on for Mouhamed Salah but it must be said what an amazing season for the Egyptian International. A few minutes after coming on Totti made his impact on the game. Totti would send a cross off a corner into Kosta Manolas a pitch perfect cross as Manolas got his head to it from point blank range just barely missing the goal as it went slightly wide. The game got even more intense as the crowd cheered everyone time Totti touched the ball. There weren’t any chances for a several minutes but it still was very existing with the need of a goal the desire was at all time high as they seems to be pressuring the Genoa defense to breaking point with Raja Nainggolan playing excellent in the second half was making some key plays in the second half. Roma would strike again Totti would send a short pass to Strotman the Dutchmen would smash it from deep but missed by the skin of his teeth. The Genoa keeper was making it very difficult for Roma in this must win game. Not long after Francesco Totti send a beautiful cross into Stephen El Shaarawy who got his head to it just missing. Since Totti has come on he has been involved with practically every chance they have had a great farewell performance so far. Then with about an half hour to go in the game Roma would make their final substitution of the game as Diego Perotti came on for Stephen El Shaarawy and what a game changing sub it would turn out to be. Great season by El Shaarawy especially the second half of the season where he was one of the best players in the league during that time. Genoa would take a chance of their own not long after the sub Davide Biraschi would strike from distance but it went well over. As the game progressed so did the time running out on the season. Than the moment came on Totti day in the 74th minute Edin Dzeko dribbled inside the box near the out of bounds line than delivered a smart pass to find De Rossi and he would put it in the back of the net to give Roma a huge boast giving them a 2-1 lead as they went back up to second it would be De Rossi’s 5th goal of the seaosn. The place would explode as it had looked like they would win on Totti day.
Roma celebrates as De Rossi’s Goal as they take the lead
Unfortunately Genoa had other ideas no less than 5 minutes later Genoa stroke back. In the 79th minute Diego Laxalt sent a cross from the wing into Darko Lazovic from close range putting it in the back of the net to break Roman hearts making it 2-2. Then several minutes later Genoa tried to score again on the break Darko Lazovic hit the post and Szczęsny would save the follw up shot as it would stay even. Roma was really racing against the clock at this point. Time was running out to save their season had that desire as they wanted to send off Totti in a win. With Champions league on the line the Romans started to put together some good chances with only 5 minutes left they had no other choice. On a corner Totti send in a ball to De Rossi but his header went wide. Over the last several minutes Raja Nainggolan’s passing was exceptional over the last few minutes the game final chance highlighting it. In the 90th minute Roma were given a free kick as they got one final chance to win the game. Raja Nainggolan would send in a cross from the deep wing his cross reached Fazio who sent his powerful header towards Dzeko; Dzeko then headed it towards Diego Perotti and with the game on the line on Francesco Totti day he would smash it past the keeper to bag a 90th minute winner against him former team on Totti day to make it 3-2. Perotti took off his shirt and ran towards the Roma supports as the entire team celebrated in front of their fans. I’ve seen a lot of Roma games in my life and honestly I don’t think the Olimpico has ever been that loud. An amazing goal great team work by all the parts involved it would be Perotti’s 8th goal of the season. The whistle would blow as Roma won 3-2 on Totti day. A massive win for Roma as they would get back into the champions league as the emotional of it all got to everyone as we saw Totti walk off for the very last time
Diego Perotti scores in the 90th Minute to give Totti’s Farewell in Dramatic Fashion
After the match ended Totti with his wife and kids made his final lap of the Stadio Olimpico as he looked at the crowed everyone was emotional as very small kids to grown adults were in tears all 72,000 fans were in a depressing state. When he reached midfield he greeted his teammates to say good bye to the men he has shared the field with some of his teammates were taking it really hard Alexandro Florenzi, Danielle De Rossi and Kosta Manolas among them. He then received some sort of Roma plaque given to him by De Rossi as he hugged his longtime friend. Totti raised it towards the crowd as he would hand to his wife and would start his farewell speech. “The moment has arrived. I’ve cried the whole day. This was my only jersey,” said Totti. Damn it. I get goosebumps when I think about June 17, 2001. From tomorrow, I’ll be a grown up. I want to dedicate this letter to all of you – to all the children that have supported me. I’d like to think that for you, my career has become a fairytale for you to pass on. It’s really over now” said Totti in a letter to the Roma fans. With this Win Roma will into the champions’ league group stage. The man of the match today is Diego Perotti scoring the winning goal setting up perfect farewell. Also after this season Roma set records for the most points in a Season (87) Most Goals in a season (90) most away wins (11) most league wins (28) as well as Dzeko setting records for most goals in the league (29) and Most goals in a single season for a Roma player (39) as he would win the golden boot Szczęsny also picked up the Golden Glove with 14 Clean Sheets. They even would have a better goal difference than the champions Juventus. This was the best Roma team of all time; in other news Crotone pulled off one of the greatest relegation escapes in Serie A History so my hats go off to them. This was Roma and Totti’s final moment years will go by time will pass but they will never be another Totti he came here in 1989 as boyhood fan and he left a King.
