Lyon Captain Maxime Gonalons Joins Roma For 5 Million #86

Rome, Italy

Roma’s busy summer continues as the club has made yet another signing since Roma Sporting Director Monchi took the job at the end of the last Years Serie A campaign he has wasted no time getting down to business. He has just pulled off his 4th signing of the summer and we are only in the beginning of July. This time they would bring in a veteran an experienced player as they have recently made an agreement of 5 Million with Olympique Lyonnais captain defensive midfielder Maxime Gonalons. Roma have been busy this summer as they also signed Center-Back Hector Moreno from PSV for 5 Million, Feyenoord right back Rick Karsdorp for 19 Million and the Return of Lorenzo Pellegrini for 10 Million from Sassuolo. They also have sold Mouhamed Salah to Liverpool several weeks ago to Liverpool for 39 Million and Sold Leoandro Paredes for 27 Million in addition to that it looks like Rudiger may be heading out as well. With the amount of money that Roma has made from outgoing transfers for them to be spending so wisely it’s good to see. The 4 players Roma have brought in together cost just 39 million which is the cost of Salah and they didn’t bring in just anyone they have brought it good players. Gonalons has come out and said that he would be joining Roma a few weeks ago he then flew to the Italian Capital to undergo his medical to complete his move to Roma. Upon his arrival the newest Roman had this to say “I’m very proud to have joined this massive club, one of the best in Italy. I’m both proud and aware of the responsibility. I respect those who have come before me and I want to win trophies here, showing what I’m made of after speaking with Monchi and the coach about their ambitions, I did not hesitate for a moment,” “For this reason there were no issues and everything was agreed very quickly. I cannot wait for this new adventure.” The French International had spent the last 17 years playing for Lyon making a total of 343 appearances and 13 goals to his name during his time in France he won the Coupe de France and Trophée des champions in his tenure despite racking up so many appearances he is only 28 years old he can fill the void left by Paredes it is yet another bargain in Roma’s transfer policy.

Gonalons spent the better part of two decades in France playing for Olympique Lyonnais youth and first team as he progressed through the ranks to become a first team player for Lyon. He spent a brief three year period with FC Villefranche’s youth team before joining Olympique Lyonnais at just 9 years old in 2000. He would join Olympique Lyonnais’s youth program as the midfielder started his footballing journey. He would continue to work hard and develop his game he spent the next 8-9 years continuously improving with the youth team. In the 2007-2008 season when he was 18 years old he was promoted to Lyon’s Championnat de France team which was an amateur youth league. He played in 26 matches scoring 2 goals which is pretty respectable amount for a defensive midfielder Lyon finished 7th in the group out of 16teams. The next summer it would pick up an injury that would keep him out during the summer he would eventually get fit as he would make 24 appearances scoring 3 goals. Lyon finished first in their group that season as they would win it. Enough was enough Lyon couldn’t hold off any longer as Lyon singed Gonalons to his first pro contract. Made his debut season in 2009-2010 the than 20 year old would make 27 appearances scoring two goals as he helped Lyon finish second in his debut season. It was clear from the start he was going to a very good player for them but a 20 year to come in his first season and play 27 games in his first season is very impressive in its own right. In his next season (2010-2011) he became a leader and make a major impact on defense he made 28 appearances as Lyon finished 3rd. The next season he would get his chance in the champions league and become an even bigger star still just 21 years old he was becoming one of the best midfielders in France his defensive emphasis on the team wasn’t going unnoticed he would be named the captain within three seasons. The 2011-2012 season was disappointing in the league finishing 4th however it still was on to remember Lyon made the Round of 16 of the champion’s league and Gonalons helped Lyon on a cup run as he would win his first trophy for the club Lyon would win Coupe de France and make the final of the French cup. Gonalons has a break through season make 54 appearances scoring three goals. The next season (2012-2013) would be even better he improved on their poor form getting 3rd in the league and. Personally it would be a good year for him as well becoming more of a leader making 43 appearances scoring 4 goals it was at this point he was starting to attract clubs. The following year in the 2013-2014 season Gonalons was considered the best player at his position in France by many people he was top quality. In the league they would struggle as they would drop down to 5th an underwhelming run of games but there was some positivity as Lyon won their group in the Europa league and made the Quarterfinal making 54 appearances scoring one goal. Over the next three season Gonalons now as captain became a defensive machine and a problem for their opponents as he really molded into a great defensive midfielder he made that role his own despite lack of goals his impact on those season were undeniable. The team did pretty well too they finished second two out of their final three seasons and just this last season despite getting 4th in the league they would go on a deep European run. They would manage to get 3rd in their champions’ league group not enough to advance but would enter the Europa league going on a deep run knocking out Roma in the process getting into the semifinal but failed to get past Ajax. In eight years at the club Gonalons made 333 appearances for the club scoring 13 goals and played in 60 European games for his boyhood club as well as being capped 7 times by France. Upon his departure the midfielder spoke one last time to Lyon’s media, “I spent 17 years with my favorite club. I discovered everything. This club gave me everything, made me grow as a man and as a player. I owe them everything.”

The Creative Midfielder Will fit Right In to the Vacant Role left By Paredes

Monchi has added another piece to the puzzle with this one and could help with the potential defensive issues we may see due to the rumors regarding Rudiger and Manolas. Just this week Roma youngster Leonardo Paredes left for Russia on a 27 Million deal the Argentine joined Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg. Maxime Gonalons can come in and easily fill that void left by Paredes, he is older and more experienced in that role having proven how well he can play the role the past few seasons he has great defensive ability as well as some offensive tools in his skill set. Gonalons is the second midfielder Roma Sporting Director Monchi has brought in as he recently brought back Lorenzo Pellegrini from Sassuolo earlier this week. Maxime Gonalons is one of the most underrated players in France Roma pulled off yet another steal for him to only cost 5 million is robbery he is only 28 years old he should be costing at least 15 million. Not only is he is a good signing but he can go straight into the starting 11 from the get-go he not a one sided player either he can play and affect from both ends of the pitch he is simply a special player that works hard and does his job to great success isn’t a flashy player you not going to make you jump out of your seat when you see him play but he does the gritty work to help win games. He will play very well in EDF’s 4-3-3 formation in all likelihood he will play alongside Kevin Strootman and Captain Danielle De Rossi in the defensive midfield will be rotated among those three I think the three of them can coexist together quite well. He will be a great defensive asset back there in the defense with his excellent tackling and interception ability. Maxime Gonalons (629) has made more tackles and interceptions combined than in other player in Ligue 1 since August 2014 he is a Kante type of player and can play that role for Roma given the defensive problems that Roma could have in the transfer market this is perfect he is like having an extra defender and he can also player center back as a secondary position. He made 86 tackles last season for Lyon which was one of the best in the league he also can help offensively too. His passing ability is phenomenal an extremely high volume passer with incredible accuracy he successfully converted on 1,474 passes with a 90% accuracy rating which Ranked #1 in the France league last season with an average 18 meter average pass length and 17 key passes. He also was a tool as being a key player in the attacking sense completing 43 of 50 take-ons. His passing ability and attacking ways will could be a huge help in Roma’s offence. Giving exceptional passes to their big Strikers Edin Dzeko and Pellegrini or their quick Crafty players such as Stephen El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti Roma could score over 100 goals yet again this season Monchi has put together a very strong midfield for not very a lot of money if Roma add another striker this team could be very dangerous next season at least attacking wise. Every player Roma has lost in the transfer window has been replaced almost instantly they are only a few more pieces away from being a truly great and they have a lot to time to make several more signings. Maxime Gonalons also served as captain while at Lyon he brings experience and leadership to a team that just lost Francesco Totti. Monchi was very excited by the signing when he was asked about Roma’s new man “Gonalons is an international caliber player. Along with his technical skills, he will add its bag of experience and personality to our team. I am extremely happy to welcome you to AS Roma.” Since Monchi arrival to the club he has brought in 4 signings a very good and its only July 3rd more is surly to come but this was a tremendous buy.
