Roma Use Sassuolo Connection Again to Land Gregoire Defrel #89

DEFREL

Rome, Italy

Roma’s busy summer continues as Monchi continues to work his magic in the front office as Roma pull off their 6th signing of the summer with the Arrival of Gregoire Defrel from Sassuolo. Monchi has sold key players such as Mouhamed Salah to Liverpool for 35 million Antino Rudiger and Leandro Paredes to Zenit but has brought in Quality signings with the singings of Defenders Rick Karsdorp from Feyenoord for 19 Million Hector Moreno from PSV for 5 Million, midfielders Lorenzo Pellegrini also from Sassuolo for 10 million, Maxime Gonzales from Lyon for 5 million and most recently striker Cengiz Under from Başakşehir for 16 million. The signing of Gregorie Defrel will only add to a very active summer I can’t remember a transfer window where Roma has been this active in quite some time Roma over the last very years have made a few signings here and there but it’s been mainly loan deals Monchi has used his transfer magic to change that. Gregoire Defrel arrived in Rome Thursday to complete his move to the Italian capital. He will join on an Initial Loan deal costing 5 million with a mandatory by option for an extra 15 million to be paid to Sassuolo next season if the Striker reaches certain targets his fee could rise to 23 Million which will be Sassuolo’s transfer record. Roma will only need to pay 5 million upfront so from a financial perspective it’s a cheap deal for this window allowing the club to spend big on their other targets. The French international signs on a 5-Year deal keeping him at the club until 2022. He will reunite with former Sassuolo manger Eusebio Di Francesco and former teammate Lorenzo Pellegrini in Rome he has worked with both of them very closely over the last two years. In two years with Sassuolo he scored 22 goals in 71 appearances he also previously played for Cesena and Foggia He will head out to the United States shortly to join the rest of him Roma teammates on their USA preseason tour shortly he should be ready for the team’s match against Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night at Red Bull Arena in Harrison New Jersey. This signing give Roma another striker option with Dzeko and Under remaining as the team’s only strikers he can also play on the wing as well. An Excited Defrel had this to say upon his arrival “It means a lot to me to be able to play for Roma. I’m going to be part of a very strong group, one of the best teams in Italy. I’m delighted to be here and I will give my all for the team.” This is only the beginning despite Monchi having made six signings Monchi still has more plans in the transfer market Man City defender and Former Lazio left back Aleksandar Kolarov is expected to make the controversial move to Roma in the next few days. Also Roma continue to pursue Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez as a replacement for Mouhamed Salah. Roma are hoping to talk Leicester City down from their insane 46 Million asking price. Roma remain the favorites to land the want away midfielder. In addition to all that Monchi has offered Raja Nainggolan a new contract with a higher salary which the Belgium International will sign in the coming days as an agreement has been made. Club legend Francesco Totti has taken a position as a Sporting director this week he will be working under Monchi in the front office. Another crafty order of business for Roma and Monchi so far in the transfer window Roma have sold 92 million and spent 55 million getting 6 players with their spending good business.

Much better

Gregiore Defrel started his career at Italian club Parma joining their youth academy in 2009 in the age 17 he played for Parma’s youth team for two seasons he wasn’t thought of as a crucial piece of the future but he would eventually call up to the first team he made his Serie A debut during the final match of the 2010-2011 season he would come on a sub against Cagliari. However he wouldn’t get into the team again they didn’t feel he was a necessary asset to the team as the team was quite good at the time recently finishing 8th in Serie A in his first season. So given the unfavorable circumstances Parma sent him to Foggia on a season long loan. It was an opportunity to show what he can do and showing other clubs what he is capable of as it appeared the chance of Defrel cracking into the Parma team seemed unlikely. During his loan spell he would flourish his skills despite it being Serie C he was going to get first team football. Defrel made 23 appearances for Foggia scoring 4 goals but collectively the team didn’t do to well as they finished 11th but failed to insure safety losing in the relegation playoff. Despite a less than a stellar season for the team he did impress. He caught the eye of one team in particular Serie B side Cesena offered him a way out of Parma. He would join Cesena prior to the 2012-2013 season he would thrive once again this time in Serie B. He made an impact on the team He made 30 appearances scoring 3 goals in his first season. The team didn’t do all that well that season they weren’t a relegation team but they didn’t challenge at all as they finished 11th in the league earing a 12-14-16 record getting 50 points. In Defrel’s second season the team improved massively Cesena did tremendously well and Defrel also did very well scoring 4 goals in 42 appearances in the 2013-2014 season. Cesena posted a 17-15-10 record earning 66 points and a 4th place finish. Cesena went into the playoffs giving them chance at promotion to Serie A. In the playoff Semi Final Cesena passed Modena 2-1 over the two legs they advanced to the final they were now just two games away from Promotion. Cesena played Latina in final they won 4-2 over the two legs to gain promotion to Serie A. Finally Defrel was ready for the big time as he returned to Serie A. In the 2014-2015 season now 23 years old Defrel really broke through and came into his own as he was starting to emerge as a star. Individually he was top quality scoring 9 goals in 34 games during his debut season in Serie A. However the team was dreadful they finished the season well below safety a horrible campaign finishing with a 4-12-22 record only earing 24 points ending up in 19th going straight back down. They finished 13 points from safety the only team that finished below Cesena was his former team Parma. Cesena was going back to Serie B however Defrel was not he would get interest from a Serie A club. Defrel would make a summer move to Sassuolo before the 2015-2016 season; In three seasons at Cesena he made 106 appearances scoring 16 goals. At Sassuolo he would be under the tutelage of a young manager on the rise in Eusebio Di Francesco who is currently Roma’s new manager he also would play with another Roma signing Lorenzo Pellegrini. In his first season individually he played 33 games scoring 7 goals and as a team he would be a part of Sassuolo’s most successful team in history as they would go beyond the unimaginable as the team finished 6th with a record of 16-13-9 getting 61 points and even got into Europa league qualifying. The attacking trio of Gregiore Defrel, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Domenico Berardi proved to be lethal they ripped through Luzern from Switzerland 4-1 in the first round of qualifying and cruised through RED STAR Belgrade just the same in a 4-1 win over the two legs once again as the team would make history as they would get into Europe for the first time ever Defrel would score twice in those two games. This last season he would do even better scoring 16 goals in 37 games Defrel earned a 32.4 conversation rate and created 30 chances in the 2016-2017 season in Serie A. In the league Sassuolo would go pretty well but were unable to recreate the past season success. Sassuolo would finish 12th with a 13-7-18 record earning 46 points. The team would complete in the Europa league as they would draw Genk, Athletic Bilbao and Rapid Wien in Group F. The young Italian side struggled as they finished bottom of the group with 5 points getting a win two draws and three losses but were still able to score 9 goals in 6 games Defrel scoring two of them. Despite the disappointment it was progress for the club’s first ever European competition. Following the season he had received interest from many clubs including Leicester City, Spurs Southampton and Roma. The Italians used the Sassuolo connection to Keep him In Italy to join the Giallorossi with Pellegrini and Di Francesco both joining Roma earlier this summer played a major role in the decision I’m not sure what role he will play in the team but he adds to depth to an already very good football team.

Monchi meets with Defrel upon the striker’s arrival in Rome

Monchi and Roma continue to add more to their most active transfer window in years adding key players to help their attack. Gregiore Defrel becomes the second striker signed this week with Turkish youngster Cengiz Under signing from Başakşehir. With another weapon added to the team Monchi plans to put out a potent attack grabbing a 16 goals scorer is exactly what this team needs as this attack has gotten even stronger. As I mentioned Gregiore Defrel and New Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco have already worked together quite a bit and is familiar with Lorenzo Pellegrini who will play a major role in the roma attack this season as well. So their chemistry is already on the right foot The big thing here is Roma added another striker which is a position that Roma doesn’t have a lot of depth at the moment now with this signing Roma have 3 options at the striker position. Dzeko carried the majority of the weight last season begin the teams only true striker last season. He did go on to win the golden boot and score 39 goals in all competitions but got warn out in a lot of games. The signings of Gregiore Defrel and Cengiz Under give the Romans two good striker options the youngster gives the team the pace and athleticism and Defrel will give Roma a different look up top and can be a lethal scorer when he is in good form. Defrel also can offer more creativity from the striker position he can also run the wings and will likely rotate between the two positions this season. However he is more of a pure striker than Under he has the height and stretch to be a real threat whether it is off the bench or as a starter. In the 4-3-3 it is very unlikely he would start over Dzeko but as a winger he could start some games it’s not really clear what his role would be in EDF’s 4-3-3 formation but he will get games and score goals for Roma EDF had hinted that he plans to play Dzeko with Defrel. If he plays on the wing he may get some starts but I wouldn’t start him over Perotti or Mahrez if he comes but I see him making a good impact this season. He is a capable scorer who has an eye for goal. Dzeko and Defrel at top together could be very dangerous but it depends if EDF has his heart set on the 4-3-3 formation he could start games under certain formations through despite the way he is used he can score goals and that’s something Roma need especially given the exist of Salah to Liverpool I also think he could drop down and play centermid he could be effective from that spot as well. Roma’s three strikers can now each bring something else to the table Dzeko is a goal machine who again this season will carry the weight than you have a young prospect in Cengiz Under has the youth speed and a creative dribbler and final an experienced Serie A striker an expert in Italian football having played in Serie C, Serie B and Serie A he knows this league very well and brings that experience he wants to build something special in Rome he very much wanted to continue to play in this league and excel at it he is now at a much bigger club and deservingly so adding him gives Roma so much depth in what they can do with their attack so many goal scorers on the squad already. His best position is definitely center-forward he has scored 10 goals from that spot getting a 6.95 rating when he plays CF. Although he is very much an attacking style player Much like new teammate Raja Nainggolan he great defensive ability and is excellent at holding the ball as well as an excellent short passer. Roma’s attack now has an additional level of utility with the signing he is player Roma targeted in January it was worth the wait because he is here now Dzeko and Defrel together will scare opponents. Their attack is lethal with Nainggolan, Perotti, El Shaarawy, Pellegrini Under, and potentially Mahrez a nearly unstoppable force Defrel only adds to the BEAST.
