Score: Roma 1 Inter 3 FT
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following Roma’s opening day win at Atalanta they would prepare for the 2nd game of this season’s Serie A campaign as the journey continued getting their home opener as Roma would welcome Inter Milan to the Stadio Olimpico in the return of Lucaino Spalletti to Rome as the Italian tactician would go head to head with Roma to try to outduel his former employer. Inter hasn’t had great success against Roma lately with Roma having sweept the season series a year ago as well as having not beaten Roma at home since 2008. It would start very well for Roma as expected with Edin Dzeko scoring the opening goal of the game to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Roma continued to apply pressure as they were the much stronger in their first half the Romans could of gone 2-0 inside the first half when Inter had a hand ball in the box but the referee ignored the obvious handball Roma went into half time with the 1-0 lead. In the second half more controversy would hit When Diego Perotti was denied a another clear penalty something the made him livid a referee mistake that would change the game. Soon after Icardi would equalize to make it 1-1 Inter would score twice more with goals from Icardi again and Vecino to win 3-1. A score that doesn’t reflect the game with Roma having played much better and having been excuse my language screwed in this match but none the less Inter pick up a big three points for them.
Some massive news coming in this week for Roma as it was an important week for not just for Roma but European football in general. The Champions league draw took place on this past Friday with Juventus, Roma and Napoli all involved in the event with Totti and Monchi also there for Roma’s representation. Prior to the draw taking place Roma legend Francesco Totti received UEFA President’s Award recognizing him for outstanding achievements and professional excellence. “It’s the first time I’ve been given an award by UEFA,” said Totti. “It’s an important recognition and it’s rewarding, so now I’m ever prouder of what I achieved on the pitch, and off it especially.” Totti was one of the people selected to participate in the draw. During the draw Totti had a humorous moment during the draw when he drew FC Barcelona with Juventus the Roma legend couldn’t help but chuckle as he looked at Juve keeper Buffon who was sitting in the front row. Roma would end of getting drawn into a very tough group being elected in Group C along with Premier League Champions Chelsea ,Champions League Semi Finalists Atletico Madrid and Azerbaijan’s first Champions League side ever Qarabağ FK. A considerably very difficult group to be put in as it will be very difficult for them to get into the top 2 of that group. Napoli would get drawn into Group F with Shakhtar Donetsk, Manchester City and Feyenoored. Juventus would end up in group D with Barcelona, Olympiacos and Sporting as Italy has three teams in the champions league this year great for Italian football. In transfer news this week the story remains the same with Roma fight for Sampdiora’s Patrick Schick as the Czech Republic striker on the verge of a Roma switch as Inter Milan backed out of the deal to target Keita Balde Diao from Lazio. With that Schick move to Roma its now seeming very likely in a reported 38 Million euro deal to join Roma the deal is expected to be completed in the next couple of days. Then Finally the team got some good News as Alexandro Florenzi has retuned from injury. Also The transfer window shuts very soon so hopefully Roma can add another piece before it shuts.
Eusebio Di Francesco stuck with is normal formation didn’t make any changes to his team’s formation after the opening game of the season. In goal would be the Big Brazilian Allison coming off a clean sheet in his first Roma start. In the defense however Their would be a slight change to the back 4 with Bruno Peres picking up an injury. Last weeks MOTM Aleksandar Kolarov would remain as the left back making his appearance for the Romans then on the other side at Right back would be Kostas Manalos who had to be moved to the outside due to the injury to Bruno Peres Juan Jesus would stay as the left center back and to replace Peres as the right center back would be Fazio the team would have preferred Peres but there wasn’t really any choice so Fazio was thrown in there be default . Roma would go with the same three in the central midfield with Captain Danielle De Rossi as the Center midfielder then on the right side in the right midfielder position would Kevin Strootman then on the opposite side of Strootman would be Serie A’s best player Radja Nainggolan as the left midfielder. A very formidable midfield to go up against so still very strong in the middle. The front three or as I like to call it the three headed monster would stay the same as well which I was surprised by I was thinking El Shaarawy would start the game due to his pace. On the left wing was Diego Perotti on the other side of him as the right wing was Grégoire Defrel making his second start in the Roma colors and finally in the middle the BIG Bosnian tower standing at 6’4 Edin Dzeko as Roma’s #1 Striker up front. A very strong side still but I would of started El Shaarawy but no complaints a very strong Roma side.
After weeks of talking about it both team were ready to kick off in Luciano Spalletti’s return to Rome in an addition of SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL. Roma started really slow last week against Atalanta attacking wise it took them awhile to get it going. That would not be a problem at home Inter wasn’t no slouch either but Roma did look better early in the game. Despite that Inter would get their first chance with Icardi putting himself in the spot light that is when controversy hit. Icardi received a pass in the box from Perisic Icardi would then try to strike it from close ball deflected off a Jesus before he tried to strike the bouncing ball he misfired. However Roma were outraged as it looked like Icardi handled the ball with his hands but still wasn’t given a Card which was a bit mental since it was clearly blatant. However Roma would respond about a minute later with Roma nearly breaking the deadlock. off a corner Aleksandar Kolarov would strike a ball from long range but the Serb would hit the bar nearly giving Roma an early lead. It continued to be in Roma’s favor as it just looked like they were on the verge of breaking through. They really struggled to get any sort of acting going in their opening game of the season but here that looked more in control and look very good offensively. A minute after Kolarov hit the bar Roma would get another chance but this time there was no stopping the relentless attack. In the 15th minute Roma would take advantage from the middle of the pitch approaching the danger era Kevin Strootman would attempt a pass that would be deflected by Inter but coincidentally it would fall to Radja Nainggolan. Who would attempt a shot but again was blocked by the Inter defense Radja would get the ball back and quickly passed it out to Defrel who then gave it right back to him the Belgium International took a few dribbles out to sent a masterful chipped pass into you guessed it Edin Dzeko in a dangerous position in the box Dzeko would control it with his chest before blasting it in the top corner giving the keeper no chance as he gave Roma the early 1-0 lead. Last Seasons top scorer’s scored his first goal of the season and it would be Dzeko’s 50th goal for the club. However big credit has to go to Raja Nainggolan for not giving up on the play and the delivery of that world class pin point pass to Dzeko for the goal. Inter would try to respond a few minutes later with Antonio Candreva’s cross from the wing into the box but Valero header was very poor was a wasted chance by Inter as the ball went well over. It began to kind of go back in forth but still looked like Roma were on the front due Inter’s poor chances when in position. Dzeko had a chance about half way through the first half but his strike from outside the box was dealt with. There were a few other chances but the goalkeeper was unchallenged as Allison didn’t have to do a lot of work in their first half. More rotten luck would blow Roma’s way again shorty before the break. Diego Perotti’s ball work set up a scoring chance as he would dump it off to Aleksandar Kolarov who sent a cross into the box. The ball was controlled by Defrel’s header and the winger then passed it back out to Nainggolan who was on the verge of a wonderful goal. Radja would hit the ball on his first touch to take a very power shot at goal but luck wasn’t on his side as he would hit the side of the bar to deny a goal scoring opportunity. Right before the half Inter had one last chance to equalize Icardi was right outside the box in a attacking position he would dump it off to Perisic who sent a near perfect pass to Valero who ran into the box but he was be trapped by the defense so he would sent back to Icardi and the striker hit a near flawless shot in perfect position at the goal but Allison would make a miraculous save denying a sure goal. Allison has proven to be the Keeper Roma need moving forward. After the first half it was 1-0 Roma thanks to an Edin Dzeko strike.
Edin Dzeko celebrates the opening goal has he opens His goal Scoring account
Roma was very unlucky not to have scored more in this game as they hit the bar twice on goal scoring occasions. However Inter ended the first half very well they were doing the right things to get back into the game. Roma’s the best player on the pitch had been Diego Perotti who was doing all the little things for Roma. There would be one change from Inter with João Mário replacing Roberto Gagliardini who was having a horror show of a game. There would no change from the Roma side of things as they kept their core. Roma would get their first chance of the second half with De Rossi trying from distance but was off target as the keeper wasn’t threatened. In the beginning of the second half their weren’t a lot of quality chances from either team. Perotti had a shot go wide and João Mario had a shot that went directly at the keeper straight to his hands. During the beginning stages of the second half Inter started to gain momentum but Roma still remained the better team on the night both teams fighting in a great match. However I was slightly bothered by the way Inter Milan players were playing they started to play dirty crossing over the rules of the game and were jus plainly getting away with it but the game would progress on. Inter Milan and Roma would both make changes at this point Inter would make their second change brining in New signing Dalbert for Yuto Nagatomo and Roma would brining El Shaarawy in for Defrel. Not long after the subs Roma would have a glorious chance but once again rotten luck would ruin it. Diego Perotti dribbled towards the box with great pace the winger would strike it from outside the box a well hit ball but again luck wasn’t on their side as he hit the bar making it the 3rd time Roma hit it in this game. shortly after Diego Perotti would get into position again but this time controversy would hit. Perotti would receive the ball from the wing inside the box near the touch line when he was brought down in the box in a clear penalty siltation. However for some reason it wasn’t given it was a clear as day an obvious penalty not only that but they didn’t even consult video replay review to see for sure the ref ignored it completely at this point Roma lost the game if a Penalty is given GAME OVER they would be no come back. No more than 5 minutes later things would turn for Roma largely because they were screwed by the official. In the 67th minute Antonio Candreva sent a through ball into box to Icardi and the Argentina would equalize as he would slot it in the bottom corner. Roma visibly being robbed here a good finish by Icardi but not one that reflects the game as all of sudden it was 1-1. All the momentum left Rome however El Shaarawy got in very good position to put Roma back in front when Diego Perotti sent him a through ball El Shaarawy took a good shot that nearly when it squeezing under the keeper but the ball was cleared. Just like that Inter would score again in the 77th minute Icardi would take a cross from Perisic and put it in the bottom corner to make it 2-1 Inter. Roma would make another change as Cengiz Under would get his debut to get a run out I thought he did quite well creating for Roma despite his lack of time he had. Inter would then score again not long after in the 87th minute has Matías Vecino would come on to score his first Inter goal. Allison couldn’t do anything about it despite the score he was class saving 5 of Inter 8 shots on target. the final whistle would blow with Inter getting a 3-1 win but was is deserved……
Icardi scored Two goals after Controversial Refereeing in Inter favor to win 3-1.
Roma were the victims of a true robbery I don’t mean to blame the official but the officiating changed the game. Inter won this game and they did well to do so and Roma made their fair amount of mistakes as we saw Icardi take Fazio to school who wasn’t up to the challenge as he was out classed by the World class Icardi but the score doesn’t reflect the game. Following this game Roma head into the International break after International break Roma take on Sampdoria on the road a very winnable game and they have a series of very winnable games to follow that up. as disappointed as it was to lose this early in the season and lose in the way we did we don’t need to freak out its only been two games Roma still are a better team than Inter and was proven today for the majority of the match. Diego Perotti was interviewed after the match and he wasn’t happy about the no call. “This was all created so they would not make mistakes, but they made a mistake anyway. I think there is a lot of work still to be done with this VAR system.Daniele De Rossi went over, as captain, to ask why the referee wasn’t checking the VAR. He replied that there was nothing in it.It was clearly a penalty, everyone saw it. They ended up giving a corner, but he never touched the ball. “I don’t have much faith in VAR after this, because if we had scored that penalty, we’d have been 2-0 up and game over.” Said Perotti Di Francesco also spoken on the game “The ball hits the post and either goes in or out. It did with us three times. You need a bit of luck in this game and Inter had quite a lot of it tonight,” Di Francesco told At the same time, we made naïve errors, especially on the equalizer, as that was the goal that changed everything. We created so many chances and didn’t convert them. Last week everyone complained we were too dull and didn’t create chances, this time they’ll complain we didn’t finish them off”. Said Di Francesco. Today’s MAN OF THE MATCH goes to Diego Perotti despite losing he was the best player on the pitch for all 90 minutes he did so much to create for Roma. Inter got the win but it wasn’t one they necessarily deserved.
