The Ballon D’or is coming in the next few weeks In London for those of you who don’t know the Ballon D’or is known as the World Football player of the year. It has been awarded for 61 years going all the way back to 1956. It is an award that has mainly been dominated by two men with either Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo winning it every year since 2008 with Messi having won 5 and Ronaldo having won four including last year. This year will likely be no different but none the less the Ballon D’or committee came out with their annual short list of 30 nominees. Among them is Edin Dzeko who becomes the first Roma nominee since Francesco Totti finished 10th ten years ago in 2007. Along with Dzeko Serie A had 4 others that received nominations with Pablo Dybala (Juventus), Leonardo Bonucci (AC Milan) Dier Mertens (Napoli) and Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus). A good amount for Italian football even if no one wins it is tremendously good for the league. It’s also amazing for Roma and the City of Rome for them to having a player considered for this prestigious award. Dzeko has been working really hard and it’s deserved even if he doesn’t win Roma and Bosnian is proud of him.
Edin Dzeko’s rise to greatness going from what many people would call a flop to the top scorer in Serie A and being a Balloon D’or nominee isn’t something many people would have expected after his first season with the club. Edin Dzeko after becoming a two-time league winner with Manchester City scoring 72 goals in 189 appearances the three Time Bosnian player for the year signed with Italian Giants AS Roma on an original loan that was made permanent his deal ended up costing a measly 14 Million all together. A deal that now looks one of the greatest bargains that Serie A has ever seen. He was a champion in England with Man City as well in Germany with Wolfsburg; not to mention being the captain and top goal scorer of the Bosnian Herzegovina National team. The thought was he would come in and give Roma that something extra to take them to the promise land. Dzeko struggled to adapt his first season in Italy as he struggled to deliver under Rui Garica despite scoring in the Derby against Lazio he struggled to find the back of the net. As the striker was regarded as a flop by the Italian media something that people would bound to regret. When Luciano Spalletti came in half way through his first season Dzeko started playing much better as he scored in the Derby again and began scoring much more regularly. Dzeko finished his first season with just 10 goals in all competitions which was more than his last season with Man City but it was a disappointing total for a player that we thought would breeze Seri A. However that would change very shortly prior to the beginning of last season he was rumored to be leaving but Dzeko wasn’t interested in relocating as he felt he had unfinished business in the capital. He worked really hard in the summer to get ready for the season he was a different player from the start. He scored over 10 goals during preseason and he kept that momentum going into the 2016-2017 league campaign. He scored 2 goals in the first game of the season and he would only continue and continue to find the back of the net it he was scoring goals for fun. He was the major part in the Roman scoring machine with Mouhamed Salah, Radja Nainggolan and El Shaarawy they became of the highest scoring teams in Europe as they scored 90 goals in the league a Roma record as well as 123 goals in all competitions. He would go on to break Francesco Totti’s season scoring record of 32 as the most dangerous striker in the league scored 39 goals. In the league he would end the season winning the Golden Boot beating out Napoli’s Dier Mertens to it with 29 goals in the league equaling the late Rodolfo Volk’s 29 he scored in the 1930 season. Dzeko became the first Roma player to be top scorer in the league since 2008. Dzeko also was the top scorer in the Europa league with 8 goals. He truly showed last season that he is one of the best strikers in the world and don’t give me “but its in Italy” I really don’t care goals are goals. Roma last season became possibly the greatest team ever not to win a trophy it was the most attacking side I had ever seen in by 20 years supporting the club. Roma were able to return to the champion’s league in one of the tightest races for second we have seen with Roma and Napoli fighting it out over the last few months. Roma ultimately getting it on the last day of the season thanks to a 90 Minute goal from Perotti in a come from behind win against Genoa on Totti Day. Roma set records for the most points in a Season (87) Most Goals in a season (90) most away wins (11) most league wins (28) as well as Dzeko setting records for most goals in the league (29) and Most goals in a single season for a Roma player (39). Dzeko had the best year of his career. This year he has only continued that despite the loss of Salah Dzeko has kept the goal scoring flowing this season he continues to write his name in Roma history. Edin Dzeko despite the fact it’s a very different team with a new manager. He has scored 8 goals and 8 games to start the season as he has lead Roma to 5 wins out of 6 in the league. In Addition to that he hit 50 Roma goals as Dzeko continues to pass players on the all-time scoring list. The Bosnian is now 18th on Roma’s all-time scoring list if he scores another 20 goals this season which I find very likely he will move up to #10 on the scoring list as that surly would salsify himself as a club legend. He has been working so hard and deserves to be considered for the Ballon D’or I don’t think he will win but I think he should be in the 10-15 in the voting. All of Roma are proud of him regardless of what happens on October 23 in London.
Dzeko has Scored 21 goals in the last 21 Serie A and Averages a goal a game for 30 games.
MY PICK FOR THE 2017-2018 Ballon D’or: Cristiano Ronaldo
Undoubtedly without question this year’s Ballon D’or Belongs to Current holder Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite being 32 years old Ronaldo still looks like he is in his prime. The 4-Time Ballon D’or winner missed out on 50+ goals for the first time since 2010 he has scored 50+ goals for the previous 6 years which remains a La Liga record. Many argued that there was a decline but I highly doubt that .Ronaldo still managed 42 goals in all competitions last season and was the champions league’s top scorer with 12 goals. During Real Madrid’s champions league campaign Ronaldo became the first player ever to reach 100 goals in the champion’s league. Ronaldo and Real Madrid were the defending champions and were looking to make history as the first team to go back to back in the Champions league era. After Ronaldo’s two goals against Bayern in the Semis In was his stage to cement himself in football history. Ronaldo took his moment and delivered on the biggest stage in club football. Real Madrid went against a very tough Juventus side that brushed by Barcelona like they were a pub team. Ronaldo scored the opening goal of the game as well as scoring again to put the game away for good. He came through on the biggest stage that’s what makes legends Real Madrid would win 4-1 to repeat as champions and Ronaldo would be named man of the match with his two goals. I have been on the fence about whether he is the greatest of all time after a performance like that I now truly believe he is the greatest player to ever play football. That wasn’t it though Ronaldo and Real Madrid won La Liga for the first time since 2012. With the league title it would be Zidane’s 7th trophy as manger since he took for in Jan 2016. Real Madrid also made more history with an incredible win streak of 40 wins which broke a La Liga record. Ronaldo didn’t put up 50 goals but he came through in all the big moments Messi scored 55 goals this season and was unbelievable but Barcelona bottled it this season so I would find it hard to give it to Messi even though he was magical as always. Since Ronaldo joined Real Madrid he has scored 285 goals in 268 games in La Liga and 411 goals in 401 games in total. Ronaldo is my pick to retain the Ballon D’or he delivered and is the rightful owner of the 2017 Ballon D’or.
