Roma vs Napoli Preview #117

Week 41

Following in what has felt like an excruciating long international break in which we saw Aleksandar Kolarov’s Serbia qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. We are back Serie A returns in what is one of the biggest matches of Roma’s Season so far this season The Derby Del Sole between Roma and Napoli. Roma find themselves in 5th with 5 wins and one loss in their opening six games with still a game in hand. While the high scoring side from Naples is top of the league having won every game they have played so far this season. A absolute crucial fixture for both teams whether you considered this match a rivalry or not this is always a very exhilarating match up. Both teams are looking like legitimate title contenders this season along with defending champions Juventus I believe the road to the Scudetto is a three horse race. During last season’s campaign the they split the two games with Roma beating Napoli on the road 3-1; and Napoli stopping Roma home win streak when Napoli came to the Stadio Olimpico during the back half of last season a got a crucial 2-1 victory that ended Roma’s run at the Scudetto. Roma and Napoli have played this famous fixture since 1928 with the Giallorossi having the historic advantage in the Derby Del Sol. Roma has won 61 of the 160 meetings with Napoli having won 47 along with 52 draws. Roma and Napoli finished just one point apart last season this game will be a battle both teams have players that would be considered in the elite class of Italian football. Despite Napoli being in slightly better form over their last 5 match ups Roma have won 3 of them  but will it continue that is the real question can they stop the Napoli attack. Roma will be at home as Napoli will travel to the Stadio Olimpico as Roma will attempt to defend their fortress. Despite Napoli beating Roma at home last year this is a place where Roma usually are very strong team. Napoli so far this season is the highest scoring team in the league with 25 goals in 7 games which would be worry for any team they have one of the most ridiculous attacking teams. With the likes of Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and José Callejón up front a front three than have lots of goals in them not to mention they have capable weapons in the midfield with Jorginho and Marek Hamšík. Napoli have arguably the best well rounded attack in all of Serie A. However getting though the Roman defense is one of the most difficult things to do. The Giallorossi defense is the best in the league so far. Strong physical and intelligent these three words perfectly capture the capabilities of this defense. The size of Fazio; the mental intelligence of Manolas; the versatility of Kolarov and Florenzi Roma make it really hard to score on them. Not to mention Roma has Bruno Peres Juan Jesus to their disposal as well as having the best goalkeeper in the league so far not much gets past Allison. Roma aren’t shy in their attack either with two of Serie A’s best players in Ballon D’or nominee Edin Dzeko who has 8 goals already this season and the anchor of the midfield Radja Nainggolan. However Roma does have an injury crisis going into the game. The Inform Stephen El Shaarawy and Kevin Strootman are both likely to miss this weekend’s match as well as possibly the game against Chelsea which is a huge blow. Lorenzo Pellegrini has returned from injury as well as Diego Perotti to come back as well. Meaning we might see Florezni play up front rather than right back to make up the losses due to injury with Roma having the advantage in the back and Napoli having it upfront. Two match ups will determine the outcome. Radja Nainggolan vs Marek Hamšík as well as Golden boot holder Edin Dzeko vs Dries Mertens golden boot runner up. The advantages in this game are quite clear but If Roma come out on top in both of these match ups Roma will have a great chance to come out on top. This is always going to be a tough game especially because of injuries but when Dzeko’s scoring the way he is right now there’s always a chance.
