Birthday Boy Stephen El Shaarawy’s Thunderbolt Leads Roma to third Win in a Row #125

Score: Roma 1 Bologna 0FT

Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Following Roma’s back to back wins against Torino and Crotone Roma would continue their Serie A journey in the 9th match day of their 2017-2018 campaign. Roma would open their doors to Bologna as they continued their home stand. Roma would welcome the Rossoblu Stadio Olimpico as Roma look to make it three wins in a row to try to carry momentum into their champions league match against Chelsea on Tuesday. Roma and Bologna meet twice last year during the season. Roma won on both occasions quite easily different team different season but the Romans have had repeated success as they are unbeaten in their last five against them. They would go into the game with once again a slightly changed lineup as rest was given to Radja Nainggolan and Diego Perotti. Roma went it the game as heavy favorites but Bologna wasn’t not going to be over looked. When the game kicked off Bologna were up for it and weren’t going to allow Roma to walk over them. Bologna had some early chances in the game but Roma were right there to resound and eager to score just as much. It became a back and forth battle but the quality of Roma showed when birthday boy Stephen El Shaarawy blasted a goal in the top corner just past the half hour mark to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Roma were able to hang on thanks to some great saves from Alisson. Roma would go into the half with 1-0 lead thanks to El Shaarawy’s thunderbolt. In the second half Roma continued to apply pressure on the Bologna defense. They went right at them were on the verge of scoring several times. Bologna didn’t lay down though they tried to fight but Roma’s defensive brilliance was too much to handle as Alisson and Roma earn a another shutout. Another three points earned as Roma win their third straight game the chase is on.

Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma came out with a slightly different side once again as rest was given to some starters ahead of this league match. Roma lined up in their usual 4-3-3 formation one that Di Francesco prefers and so far as worked quite well for Roma. In goal Serie A’s clean sheet leader with a league best 6 shutouts would be the BIG Brazilian Alisson Becker he continues to impress this season. In the back as the left back would be Bruno Peres who comes in for Aleksandar Kolarov. He had started every game this season before this one . Kolarov been given deserving rest as Roma will need him in good form for Chelsea Tuesday. Beside him as the left center back would be another Brazilian Juan Jesus coming in for Hector Moreno. Next to him as the right center back would be the Argentine Giant Federico Fazio. Then finally to make up the defense would be Alexandro Florenzi who scored his first Roma goal against Bologna he is surly looking to add to his tally. A very south American defense today with three Brazilians and an Argentine. In the central midfield it would be a completely different trio as all that started on Wednesday would be given rest. In as the central midfielder would be Roma Captain Danielle De Rossi coming in for Maxime Gonalons. On the left side it would be Kevin Strootman coming in for Radja Nainggolan who is being rested for the Chelsea game. Then finally on the right would be Lorenzo Pellegrini who is looking to continue to make a good impression in his first season. In the front three there would be two changes up top as well. Birthday boy Stephan El Shaarawy coming in for fellow speedster Diego Perotti on the left wing. On the right wing coming in for Cengiz Under would be Grégoire Defrel who is making is first start since the start of the season. Up front as the main striker would be the BEAST from Bosnia Edin Dzeko who is eagerly ready to get back on the score sheet. Players rested again but a strong Roma side as Eusebio Di Francesco looks to get the best of his Son and Bologna

Tribute shown to Injured Teammate Rick Karsdorp for his recently ACL tear

After the devastating news that Rick Karsdorp would miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury the Roma players held up his jersey during the lineup before kick off. Roma try to defend their fortress as the Giallorossi would try to make it three wins in a row. After preparations and speculations for the match we were ready to kick off in Rome on this Saturday night. It would be Roma’s third game in a week having played Sunday and Wednesday The teams were ready as the match got underway at the Stadio Olimpico. Before you could even blink an eye the son of Roma Manager Eusebio Di Francesco; Federico Di Francesco got an very early chance for Bologna in the first minute. He took an early shot off a Adam Masina cross but missed. It was clear of the start of the match that Bologna was going to be a challenge for Roma. It looked very even from the early stages of the game. Even possession something that is usual in Roma’s favor was very close in comparison. Roma would get their first chance of the game about ten minutes in when Stephen El Shaarawy took a well timed accurate shot from the side of the box it came very close but his shot just missed. Bologna came back with a immediate response as Federico Di Francesco took a shot from a through ball but Alisson was able to deal with it. It was clear that he was going to be Roma’s biggest problem. It remained a very tough back and forth battle between two teams that went after it. Bologna unlike Torino and Crotone were interested in playing for the draw they wanted to win and so did Roma. As it got a little deeper into the half Roma got another chance just past the twenty minute mark. Grégoire Defrel who hadn’t started a game in a month gave Roma a chance he took a powerful shot from the six yard box but the keeper did well to save it. Roma continued to attack as much as they could using the wings to their disposal. Lorenzo Pellegrini a little later tried to set up Dzeko for a excellent goal scoring chance. The Italian whipped in a cross into the box to connect with Dzeko; the striker got his head to it but it was a little wide. none the less was a great chance. Minutes later Pellegrini would connect off a corner this time; Dzeko got his head to it again coming close but again Dzeko was just off with his header. Bologna gave a quick fire response to the pair a chances from Roma. With one of their own FDF got another chance a another close call but his shot sailed over the top corner but a valiant effort . Bologna would strike again minutes later when Adam Masina got his head to a cross into the box but Alisson made a tremendous save to deny a goal this would give momentum back to Roma and they would take full advantage of it. In the 33rd minute off a corner on the other end Lorenzo Pellegrini sent in a cross and Stephan El Shaarawy who was standing just out side the penalty area made his move getting himself in position as the Birthday boy ran it and kick the ball off the volley blasting it into the top corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. A stunning strike for El Shaarawy who just turned 25 on Friday. It would be his 3rd goal of the season and what a goal it was. It was impressive because of the way he got himself into space utilizing his speed without the ball to get to it no one in football operates better with out the ball then him. An Amazing delivery off the corner by Pellegrini as well he was terrific throughout the game. In his celebration he held up Rick Karsdorp’s #26 jersey to tribute to his teammate who just tore his ACL. Roma had chances from Kevin Strootman and Federico Fazio but at the end of the half Roma would have the 1-0 advantage

El Shaarawy’s Unbelievable Strike gave Roma the first half lead.

In the second half of this match there were no changes made for either team. It was clear that both teams were up for the challenge but Roma were slightly better. Bologna’s key to success in the second half is not to be discouraged by the deficit. They had an uphill battle usually when Roma scores its game over not many can put goals past them at all. Early into the second half El Shaarawy nearly got another he took a crack from outside the box and it nearly paid off but it just missed a terrific strike none the less. Bologna started drifting off slightly as they became more aggressive playing very physical and a bit dirty. Bologna picked up two yellow cards early in the second half. It seemed like they were just frustrated about conceding that being aggressive was the only way back. a little later it had looked like Roma were about to go 2-0 up when Dzeko scored initially it was given as a goal. However the play was reviewed and it was disallowed ultimately I can even admit it was the right decision. At this point in the game their would be changes made from both teams. Cesar Falletti came on to  replaces Ádám Nagy for Bologna. and Roma brought on Diego Perotti for Grégoire Defrel. It remained back and forth between the two sides but Roma were on the front of it with Pellegrini and El Shaarawy with inspiring performances. About 10mintues later Roma would go to their bench again as Bruno Peres made room for Hector Moreno. Roma had a few other chances a little later but chances from El Shaarawy and Pellegrini were blocked by the Bologna defense. With under twenty minutes left Dzeko had another decent chance. After receiving a good pass from Pellegrini Dzeko hit the ball from range but the keeper was able to handle it. Roma would then make their final sub of the game as EL Shaarawy walked off putting in a man of the math performance he needs to continue to get starts for this Roma side outside of Dzeko he is the biggest scoring threat. Gerson would come in as he got a standing ovation from the Roma fans. I’m glad that Gerson is has continued to be involved by EDF Spalletti’ slowed his progression for not giving him a chance to prove himself. EDF his getting him proper minutes he will continue to improve and he has improved so much since last season now that he is getting the opportunities to play even if it is now full games it is valuable for him. Roma remained in control for the remainder of the game Bologna after not having done anything significant since Roma’s goal had one last roll of the dice in stoppage time. off a free kick Simone Verdi came very close to scoring but was a bit high. Alisson gets his league leading 7th clean sheet as Roma shutout yet another team on their way to their three win the title chase is on.

Roma - Bologna

Another Clean Sheet for Alisson as he shows why he is the best In Italy Right now

In a battle of father vs son Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma got the better of Federico Di Francesco’s Bologna as Roma win their three game in a row. Another display of a defensive masterclass from the league’s best defense. As Roma come away victorious in another 1-0 win thanks to birthday boy Stephen El Shaarawy’s subline volley in the first half. Roma have won their last three games with the exact same score line. Great defensive football with the wiliness to attack there has not been any shortage of offense either. It must be said that Roma are playing very efficient football a similar style to Premier league champions  Chelsea who Roma will host on Tuesday in their champions league clash. However Bologna gave Roma a fight as they came out with an attacking mentality they should be happy with the way they played. Roma took their best chance of their game in the first half when El Shaarawy smashed a volley in the top corner a unsaveable ball that no keeper could save. Roma came out with a under strength team to give rest to players so Roma could be rested and ready for Chelsea. With the likes of Radja Nainggolan and Aleksandar Kolarov being rested. My man of the match today goes to Stephen El Shaarawy he not only scored the goal but got in a lot of good positions to score and his movement without the ball was excellent. Another who was great was Lorenzo Pellegrini who put in his best game in a Roma shirt. Alisson gets another clean sheet as he is taking the league my storm with his league leading 7th clean sheet Roma’s defense is just next level this season one of the best in years. A collectively good effort as they did the necessary things to secure the three points. Chelsea awaits on Tuesday in the champions league part 2 if Roma are organized and play their best football The Romans can get a result. With the players been rested since the first Chelsea game Roma will be ready for another battle with The Premier league champions.
