Gerson A Star In the Making #134

A few weeks back we saw the Emergence of Brazilian Youngster Gerson Da Silva more coming known as simply Gerson. The 20-Year old’s two goal performance against Fiorentina showed the world the quality he has he announced himself to Italian Football officially in a night that he will remember for the rest of his life. A night that almost didn’t happen but when Roma saw Luciano Spalletti left for Inter Milan we saw Sassuolo boss Eusebio Di Francesco come in. A move that Changed his fortunes at Roma all of sudden he was given a chance to show his ability despite a loan move coming in from France. Nice came In for the youngster with a loan deal that included that 16 Million buy option at the end of the deal the deal was collapsed due to Di Francesco’s unwillingness to let him go. After the deal the new Roma boss came out and said that Gerson was in his plans for the upcoming season and wasn’t interested in sending him out on loan. Gerson when he was in his teens was considered by many as very bright prospect in Brazil’s youth system that was produced so many great talents. While playing for Brazilin club Flumiesse he consolidated his talent showing his worth looked as a very crafty midfielder with amazing potential not a guy who will give you 20 goals a season but a creative player who can pass to a high level and can even score when he is asked to. Many clubs began looking at his as clubs were getting bids prepared to try to sway the young Brazilian to their respective clubs they weren’t small club either some of the big boys were very keen on the youngster. Gerson received offers from 4-time European champions Barcelona, 7-Time European champions AC Milan, Bayern Leverkusen, West Ham United a few others including Roma. To everyone’s surprise the decided to head to the Italian Capital to Join the Romans in the capital of the world. Roma paid around 16million for the young Brazilian in an agreement that he would join Roma the next season. The question was why someone would walk away from Barcelona Perhaps the reason behind his decision to pick Roma over superpowers as because of whom he looked up to as a young kid. The then 18- year old said upon his arrival to the Capital city said that when he was a young kid he looked up to Francesco Totti and Danielle De Rossi who his favorite players were growing up. He wanted to be a part of the system and the team that brought through his hero’s and turned them into world class players and club legends. He was excited to be given the chance to play in the famous Maroon and gold colors of A.S Roma. However there was a problem and his name was Luciano Spalletti; Roma’s then manager was a club icon who led Roma to two Coppa Itaila titles ruining two doubles by Inter Milan as well as a Supper Coppa. He was a top class manager in recent time it he was Roma’s most successful manager other than Fabio Cappelo’s Roma side that won the Scudetto in 2001. He just didn’t fancy playing Gerson which was a horrible use of an investment that Roma spent 16 million on. He was given very few chances to even prove himself at all he got a few minutes here and a few minutes there but never a concrete amount of time. He did get a few starts in the Europa league where he did well and even started against Juventus in what was a massive game. Gerson had a poor game against Juventus he was thrown to sharks expected to be able to cope. He was never picking again for the rest of the season as far as I’m aware of and that game was midseason. I honestly believe Spalletti didn’t like him or had some kind of vendetta against him if you spend 16 million on a player you should at least give him a chance. Which is part of the reason I don’t have a completely warm feeling about him now looking back at it he brought great happiness but I also do have some resentment towards him for not playing Gerson and for infrequently playing Totti in what was his last season. It was unaware if the young Brazilian had a future with the club he loves. There was a change coming through when Di Francesco took over at manager Gerson was a part of his plans and started playing with more confidence. The Club went through transitions with the Arrival of EDF as well as Transfer Wizard Monchi from Sevilla not to mention all the in and out of the transfer business. Mouhamed Salah was sold to Liverpool, Rudiger was sold to Chelsea and Leonardo Paredes was sold to Zenit St. Petersburg. Monchi then made a great deal of signings to strengthen the defense and upgrade the midfield as well as buying some young players that can develop into stars. Salah’s sale to Liverpool freed up space and opportunity for Gerson to get game time.

Prior to the seaosn Roma was elected to participate in the International Champions Cup a preseason tournament taken place in the United States. Gerson was named to the 22 man Squad that would play in America. Roma would play Juventus, PSG and Tottenham Hotspur over the weeks they spent in America. Gerson got plenty of time to prove himself and he did impress as he played all three games to their entirety. He looks very strong on the ball strong passing displayed including a jaw dropping dime against PSG. He also played in a Charity friendly against Forca Chaponesse the Brazilian team that lost their lives in a plane crash in Columbia with 77 people losing their lives. The season would kick off in august and it was decided that Gerson would be staying rather than being sent out on loan as many people would have wanted. This season he was getting minutes and chances to prove himself a lot of his appearances as a sub but he did well when he came on he continued to getting and better as he was making quite on the impression on Di Francesco satisfying his decision  to keep him in Rome. Throughout out the seaosn he found a mentor in Kevin Strootman. Strootman and Gerson became rather close as Gerson was teaching a lot from a very strong a polished midfielder who overcame adversity after several injuries early in his time at Roma. You could see the effect as he start getting better and better out of the young player he has been by the far the best having truly earned his place. His hard work would continue to pay off. Against Chelsea in a Champions league Battle at Stamford Bridge Gerson would get a start in one of the biggest games so far in this seaosn. He played very well in the match his passing in the back was excellent it was clear he has a high football IQ he also did well in an attacking sense nearly scoring a few teams. The game ended as a wild 3-3 draw. After poor performance last year @ Juventus he showed he can cope with the pressure in the big games the Premier League champions away in the champion’s league it doesn’t get much bigger. He would continue to get chances over the next several weeks. He was given another opportunity once again as he was given a start in the league in Florence against Fiorentina. Gerson lined up in the among the front three with Edin Dzeko and El Shaarawy which was proof that his manager believes in him Dzeko and El Shaarawy are two of the top 10 best players in the league in my eyes as well one some of the best Roma has to offer. Gerson was up for the challenge as it really did turn into Gerson Day as he had the best game he has ever played in the Roma shirt. Gerson opened up the scoring in the first five minutes of the game scoring his first goal in Italian football. He wasn’t done there though his day has just began Gerson would score another at the half hour mark to score a pair of goals. Gerson was the best player on the pitch throughout the game he was near perfect in everything he did dribbled well passed well shot well just a terrific man of the match performance. Roma went on to win a back and forth 4-2 winning their Serie A record 13th straight away win with Gerson having is foot prints all over it. After the International break he would get decent minutes again and would come on for the last 25 minutes against Lazio to get his experienced for the Derby. He played very well despite only been given 25 minutes he played exceptionally well. All this has shown quite clearly Spalletti made a mistake letting him rot on the bench when he is given opportunity he has shown he can take advantage is potential is endless the scary thing is he is only 20-Years old for what he can achieve with Roma the SKY IS THE LIMIT.
