Dzeko Ends Goal Drought Pellagrini Scores first Goal as Roma Dominate SPAL #139

A.S Roma 3 SPAL 1FT

Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following Dropped Points At Genoa over the weekend Roma would return home for their 14th match of the campaign. They would look to get back on track as they welcomed Serie A Newcomers SPAL to the Stadio Olimpico in a Friday night fixture between two teams on the opposite sides of the table. Roma has never played SPAL Serie A as SPAL are experiencing their first Campaign in Italian’s top flight. SPAL have struggled this season as you would expect as they find themselves in 18th having only won once in their last five games but still have a decent chance to survive this season. The side from Northern Italy are coming off a short week as they lost in the Coppa Itaila to Serie B side Cittadella not they way they would of liked coming into a massive game like this. On the other hand Roma have won four of the last five and are looking for a massive win after they disanointing draw over Sunday. Roma have done really well against Promoted Serie A sides this season they have beaten Benevento and Verona both with easy 4-0 wins they one shouldn’t be any different as the quality they have is just at another level. That is exactly what we would see in this one a very one sided affair it would turn out to be SPAL received a RED CARD in the opening 10 minutes to make things even harder on themselves after a challenge on Dzeko. Roma would open the scoring in the opening twenty minutes as Dzeko’s goal drought came to an end finally putting it in the back of the net after not having scored since October 18th against Chelsea to take the 1-0 lead. Strootman would double it just past the half hour mark as the Dutchmen would take advantage to make it 2-0 Roma. It was an incredibly dominated first half an all out Roman attack that SPAL couldn’t deal with they were very lucky only to have conceded two as it was 2-0 Roma after the first half. In the second half Roma’s continued to be all over them as a 3rd goal arrived as Lorenzo Pellegrini scored his first Roma goal to make it 3-0. SPAL just wasn’t up for the task however they did pull one back in a dramatic moment when SPAL scored a Penalty only to have to take it again SPAL scored off a rebound  on the second try to save to make it 3-1. Roma continued to push and try to add another but it would end with Roma as 3-1 winners in one of their most one sided games this season Roma had 37 shots over the 90 minutes as Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma bounce back from last weeks draw to keep them in the title race.

Their would be several changes to Roma’s 4-3-3 lineup as both Radja Nainggolan and Diego Perotti would be given rest by Eusebio Di Francesco and obviously Danielle De Rossi would  miss because of his 2-Game ban. In goal for Roma would be their #19 Alisson Becker who still leads the league in Clean sheets he has been excellent this season. At left back as usual would be Alexzandar Kolarov the Serb as been exceptional for the Giallorossi this season. Next to him at left center back would be Juan Jesus as he would get another start. Beside him as Right center back coming in for Federico Fazio would be Kostas Manolas getting his return to the starting 11. Then to cap off the defense at Right back would be vice Captain Alexandro Florenzi who would wear the armband for tonight’s game. Their were two changes in center midfield prior to the game. In center mid would be Maxime Gonalons coming in for Danielle De Rossi who was serving a suspension. On the left side again would be Kevin Strootman as he is the only player in the midfield to start again this week a good move he has been playing well. Then finally on the right side would be Lorenzo Pellegrini  who would coming for Radja Nainggolan who was rested as he watched from the crowd tonight. Up front Roma would just make the one change as another starter would be rested. Diego Perotti was given rest as he made way on the right wing for Turkish Youngster Cengiz Under the 20- Year old would be making sixth appearances for the Romans his second start. He as shown promise this season so this would be another bit of experience  for the young Turk. On the left wing would be one of Serie A’s most inform players Stephen El Shaarawy he as just been special this season. Then Finally upfront as the main striker would be the Bosnian Edin Dzeko who coming into the game was on a scoring drought surly a goal will come soon. Also Gerson, Emerson and Patrick Schick would all be available on the bench.

uk    Roma were ready to collide with recently promoted SPAL as Roma were tried to pick up their third win against promoted teams. Roma were looking to forgot about last weeks dropped points in Genoa as they returned home to the Stadio Olimpico for this FRIDAY Night in Rome as the title challengers in the capital were ready for action as we kicked off in Rome. Early in the game Roma dominated possession looking to start an attack but SPAL got a race chance as Alberto Paloschi header from a cross just went over. Minutes later Roma would get their chance as their youngster Cengiz Under took a shot from a headed pass from Dzeko in a dangerous area of the box but the shot went wide. Dzeko gave the youngster some encouragement after the miss nice gesture from the Bosnian. A minute later SPAL would suffer a blow Dzeko would be brought down by Felipe on a break set up by El Shaarawy. A Yellow card was given initially but the referee went to VAR to see whether he was in a scoring position. The Referee after the review gave the SPAL captain a straight RED CARD and SPAL were reduced to ten men. Roma then began to really dominate the game. Roma would get a relentless amount of chances over the next few minutes. El Shaarawy had a great chance striking it from deep but Gomis made a great save tipping it over the bar. Later Dzeko would try to score a pair of headers; His header from a corner from Kolarov that misfired before getting very close to scoring off a cross from the young Cengiz. A very good start for Dzeko and a very active Cengiz early in showed some real promise. Several minutes later Cengiz tried a crack on goal a well hit ball but it was saved an ambitious effort. Moments later Dzeko was nearly in again when El Shaarawy set up a chance for the striker for chance but Dzeko’s shot was saved in the bottom corner. It really looked like this was the game that Dzeko would scored again and two minutes later it would happen. In the 19th Minute El Shaarawy while on the attack sent in a cross into the box to find Dzeko he controlled it with his foot before striking it into the bottom corner as it his the post and went into the back of the net to give Roma the lead. It would be Dzeko’s first goal since October 18th against Chelsea. His 8th in the league and his 11th of the season Dzeko would also Move Past Danielle De Rossi to Move up to 15th on Roma’s all time score list with his 60th goal. Also it must be said wonderful deliver from El Shaarawy to allow Dzeko to get in position.

Edin Dzeko Scores his first goal since October 18th to give Roma the 1-0 Lead

(Cont) After the goal SPAL finally went to their bench after being down to ten men Luca Mora replaced Federico Bonazzoli. It made little to no difference as Roma continued to be ALL over the defense they had to answer for what Roma was brining forward. Dzeko had another chance off a corner when Kolarov connected with Dzeko’s header again but once again it was just off very nearly could of been his second. Roma just kept coming Manolas header from inside the box followed by Pellagrini’s strike into the bottom corner Roma were getting chance after chance. As we approached the half hour mark Roma just continued to pressurize a panicky defense. With even more chances Dzeko’s strike from deep came close It was coming and coming then finally in the 32nd minute it came. Pellegrini shot from deep was miraculously saved by Gomis; however El Shaarawy caught the rebound with his foot as it dropped from the air. El Shaarawy had one touch of the ball before pulling off a world class back heel pass into Strootman who smashed it into the back of the net to give Roma the 2-0 lead it would be Strootman’s first goal of the season. Another masterful display of passing from El Shaarawy getting his second assists of the game. Not long after Kolarov would strike from deep but misfired that chance was followed with another pair of Dzeko chances that made SPAL nervous Cengiz’s Late chance wrapped up a first half dominated by Roma as they would lead 2-0 against ten men SPAL goals coming from Strootman and Dzeko.

Kevin Strootman’s Strike makes it 2-0 in Roma’s 23 Shot first half Attack

Near perfect half for Roma and the complete opposite for SPAL the sending off was proving to be Costley. Roma dominated possession and just rammed their attack down their throat. SPAL Keeper Gomis was the only thing standing in the way of utter embarrassment Roma had 23 shots and several were on target. Florenzi gave Roma an early chance with a deep strike but it was just a little high. Again Roma looked nearly unstoppable the way they were using their backs was causing major problems creating a lot of space for the Roma attack Kolarov and Florenzi were unbelievable throughout the match. Several minutes later Maxime Gonalons gave a headed pass to Dzeko the striker’s shot was saved not enough power put into it may have had something to do with the easy save. In the 53rd minute Roma put togather a stroke of genius to put the game away for good. Manolas a good distance behind the dangerous area sent to Kolarov to switch fields Kolarov controlled the ball with his chest before sending a wonderful cross into the box as he would connecting with Pellegrini who put an ecstatic header into the back of the net to give Roma the 3-0 lead. An amazing moment for Pellegrini as he scored his first career goal for the club the 21-Year old is a boyhood Roma fan and an academy graduate it was a very special moment for him. Roma were flying however no more then two minutes later SPAL at a chance to get one back. A penalty was given and a controversial one at that it looked to me like the SPAL player just feel over.SPAL converted the penalty but their was movment on the line before the kick so SPAL would have to take it again. The second time Alisson would make a great save but former Roma player Vivani scored on the rebound to make it 3-1. Roma made a change with Gerson coming in for Gonalons. Roma wonder kid came in and look good as he has a lot of times this season. After the sub Lorenzo Pellegrini sent in another cross to Dzeko who got his head to it but he was unable to score a second. Roma a few minutes later would go to their bench again as Cengiz Under came off after a very good performance. Coming in would be one of the best young prospects in Serie A Patrik Schick. I thought when Schick came on he did vey well looked comfortable on the ball he will be some player for Roma once he gets a little more familiar and gets some more games under his belt. Chances would continue to come as Kolarov came close and Florenzi’s excellent cross to El Shaarawy nearly made it four. Roma would then make their final change as we would see the Return of Emerson from his ACL in jury as he replaced Kolarov who had quite a game. With about 10 to go Schick nearly got a debut goal when Florenzi who was having some game delivered a cross off a free kick in which Schick got his head to it nearly scoring. A few minutes later Schick almost scored again off a header in what of might of been a goal if Emerson hadn’t got his foot to it. Two final chances from Gerson and El Shaarawy would wrap it up in a game of utter domination  from Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma as Roma get back to winning ways on a historic night.

ayzbcttlhtok3keokbod  An Historic Night for Lorenzo Pellegrini as the Boyhood Fan Scores his first Roma goal

One of the most vibrate display of domination we have seen this season only one team was ever going to win it. An all out attack is what Roma brought forward they was no response for any of it just a completely dominated game by Roma. The extra man did help as they saw SPAL’s Captain and center back get sent off 10 minutes in but it was none stop Roma throughout the 90 minutes. The score line reads 3-1 but it easily could of been 10-1 SPAL’s keeper did his best to keep as many out as he could with a different keeper this game would of looked much more embarrassing. Roma fired at their goal Serie A season high 37 times throughout the game  15 of which that were on target Roma controlled the game for the first minute onwards didn’t have Nainggolan, Perotti, or De Rossi and they still ripped them to shreds every counter attack looked like a goal. Dzeko found the back of the net finally after a long drought goals also coming from Strootman and Pellegrini getting his first Roma goal as well. Roma were just the much better team the SPAL keeper did very well this game could of been a lot worse then it was. I liked the youngsters getting good minutes today with Cengiz playing 60 something minutes today I thought he did very well today as well as Schick and Gerson coming on late making their impact Roma have a great core of youngsters in a very years Roma could be an unbelievable team. The Man of the match today is a very tough one EL Shaarawy had two assists was very strong looked good on the ball Dzeko scored and had several opportunities to add to it. But I’m giving it to Florenzi he was really excellent on the right side did very well pushing forward controlled right flank doing very well passing the ball and creating lots of space for Roma to attack. A excellent well rounded performance from Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma time to take the momentum and take into to Roma’s Champions league match with Qarabag that can push them through to the Round of 16.
