Kostas Manolas Signs New Deal With Roma #140

Rome, Italy

Every since Roma Sporting Director arrived from Sevilla he has pulled off the magic as he has delivered on several signings and contract deals it is clear he desires to make Roma into a force this season and beyond. Despite losing Salah to Liverpool among others Monchi signed 9 players with the money he got from Liverpool buy some real quality players as well as young potential. Also giving new deals to Kevin Strootman, Danielle De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan and most recently Federico Fazio. Many of those players were wanted by some massive European clubs. Well he has done it again one of the best defenders in the league Kostas Manolas has been handed a new contract with the deal going through 2022. Manolas’s deal was set to expire in 2019 his new deal will extend his contract an extra three years while also receiving a massive pay rise the defender will now earn 3Million per season on his new deal. This will force interested European clubs to back off The Greek defender nearly left last summer in a reported move to Russian Giants Zeint but the defender rejected the 40 million move to St Petersburg. Making way for fellow Roma defender Antonio Rudiger 29 Million deal to Chelsea. Since the summer he has been linked with Man United, Arsenal,Chelsea,Juventus and Inter Milan. The Greek international has been exceptional thus far this season. Manolas targets trophies as he spoken upon signing his new deal. “I am very happy from the first moment, the sporting director [Monchi] made it clear that he wanted me to renew. I wanted to stay and, when those two things are in place, everything is straightforward to agree. I have renewed until 2022, I am happy about that and ready to give everything, as I have always done, for the team. I hope to win something with this club, because it’s important to win.”Manolas has played in 13 games so far this season for the Giallorossi, becoming one of the anchors of a defense that has become increasingly tough to break through under coach Eusebio Di Francesco.
“Let’s hope we can keep it up, because it’s the best defense that wins trophies,” Manolas noted.

Manolas Played for Greece’s biggest clubs before Earning his move to Rome

Prior to joining Roma in 2013 Manolas started his football journey in his home land of Greece playing for the countries biggest clubs. After playing youth football for Pannaxiakos and Thrasyvoulos Manolas was persuaded  by Uncle Stelios Manolas one of the best Greek defenders in history who was working for AEK Athens as a director to convince his nephew to join the club. The Teenage Manolas joined the club on a three year deal as he started to develop is incredible skill. Manolas just played 10 games that first season he only scored one goal that season but it was in the biggest game of the year as he scored against Olympiacos. At the end of the 2009-2010 season AEK Athens finishing in disappointing 4th but they made the Europa league. The following season he solidified himself as a starting lineup despite still being rather young. He made 27 appearances  in his second season scoring 3 goals which is quite a bit for a defender. During 2010-2011 season it was the same result then the week previous with another 4th place finish however AEK Athens wouldn’t end the season empty handed. AEK Athens won the 2011 Greek Cup final beating Atromitos 3-0 on the day it was a game in which Manolas put in a great performance as interest from bigger clubs started to stir. In what would of been his last season Manolas was special in the 2011-2012 season the defender 38 appearances in that final season scoring 2 goals but once again a title challenge failed as Athens finished 5th he finished his career at AEK Athens with 86 appearances scoring 6 goals in three seasons. Manolas made the controversial move to Olympiacos on a FREE transfers due to debts AEK were unable to pay off. At Olympiacos he announced himself to the world as all the potential  he had was on display over the two seasons. In the 2012-2013 season with Olympiacos things couldn’t have gone any better in his debut season Manolas made 37 appearances scoring one goal as he played a major part in Olympiacos winning their 40th title. They only lost one game all season to capture Greece as well as winning the 2012 Greek Cup Final over Asteras Tripoli to win the double. In his final season with Olympiacos it would be business as usual as they walked the League winning the title. Manolas really proved to be the big difference maker as he was developing into one of the best defenders outside of the top 4 leagues. Olympiacos went though the Champions league group with a second place finish the Greek side earned a place in the Champions League Round of 16. They would go up against the Mighty Man United over the two games Manolas would catch the eyes of the world as a big move was surely coming. The champions  league against United the Greek Outfit jump up to a 2-0 lead going into the second game Manolas was a large part of their ability to keep a clean sheet. However in the second leg Man united scored three goals to progress to the Last 8. Olympiacos would go out and after they finished off the league title in three seasons Manolas made 73 appearances  scoring six goals winning the league twice in two seasons. It would be his final fair well to the Greek Champions A  move was coming for the Greece’s best player.

Manolas had plenty of suitors during the 2014-2015 summer transfer window with several clubs interested from all around Europe. He would be approached by Italian Champions Juventus as they where the favorites to land the center back. Manolas would turn down the chance to play for the Old Lady In the famous Black and White colors. However he would stay in Italy as he would head to the Italian capital to join Rivals Roma on a 15 Million deal he ultimately made the right choice given his chaotic first meeting against Juventus. In his first meeting against title Juventus we saw the fight that was in him which in my opinion is one of his best qualities as a player. In the closing moments of Roma’s loss to Juventus Álvaro Morata violently tackled Manolas in which Roma’s new signing pushed the striker and got into his faced which sparked a massive brawl as both players were sent off as I said before he showed he has got that fight in him. Manolas was excellent throughout the campaign he made 41 appearances in all competitions as he became a rock in defense as he slowly became a fan favorite at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma finished 3rd in the Champions league group and eventually went out in the Round of 16 but Rudi Garcia’s Roma finished second in Serie A during the 2014-2015 season with 70Points. He was voted Signing of the season by a Roma fan pull he had an exceptional first season in Rome as he would attract the interest of Arsenal and Chelsea but Manolas decided to stay in the Eternal City. In the 2015-2016 season Manolas was even better as he turning into one of the best defenders in the league. He was exceptional in the champions league that season highlighting it was a glorious performance in a 1-1 draw with Barca. Roma had drawn Barcalona,BATE and Bayern Leverkusen in the champions league Roma would finish second in the group. Despite losing to Real Madrid in the round of 16 4-0 on AGG Manolas did an unbelievable job on Kareem Benzema over the two legs. In the league things didn’t go according to planned as they struggled in the early parts of the season even falling down to as low as 5th in the league which is embarrassing for a club the size of Roma. Rui Garcia was sacked in January as former Roma manager Luciano Spalletti came in for the rest of the season. Roma started playing much better football as he did everything he could to get Roma out of the hole as took them to a 3rd place points earning 80 points which was ten more from the season before. Manolas had an another great season scoring 2 goals in 45 games there was now no debate he was one of the best in the league. The following season he was being tracked by Arsenal, Man United, Inter Milan and Barcelona but he remained. In the 2016-2017 campaign was one of the greatest teams Roma has seen in quite some time Manolas was the leader of the defense as he was vital to their #2 ranked defense. Roma behind Edin Dzeko’s 39 goals had one of the most lethal attacks in the world scoring 123 goals in total. Roma  did very well in the Europa league after failing to win their Champions league playoff to start the season making the Round of 16 but fell to Lyon. Spalletti’s excellent Roma side along with Sarri’s Napoli pushed Juventus to breaking point as Juve narrowly won the title. It took a 93 minute winner from Diego Perotti On Totti’s last game as Roma has to say good bye to their Captain and Legend. Perotti’s goal got Roma back in the champions league. Manolas just scored once but was vital to the team’s success as clubs were coming in from him once again. As I mentioned he nearly left for Russia but returned to Roma for a 4th season. as Rudiger left instead of Manolas he is the better of the two so the club made the right choice in keeping him. Under a new manager Manolas is doing even better and so is Roma as the team is thriving under Di Francesco despite being a completely different team. He once again as been a major part of Roma leagues best defense he has also scored the game winner against Fiorentina and scored the opening goal of Roma champions league win over Qarabag. Roma 3-0 win of Chelsea this season as shown Roma are capable of winning the big games Manolas is certainly apart of that as Roma secure one of the leagues best defenders for the long term as Roma continue to chase down the Scudetto.

QARABAG   A.S Roma: Appearances: 144 Goals: 5
