Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi, Verona

Following Roma’s recent win in the champions league against Qarabag that saw the club win the group of death as they clinched their spot in the champions league Round of 16; as well as coming off a 37 shot performance in their 3-1 win over SPAL in the league  Roma would return to league action. Roma would head to Verona as they took on Cheivo in the 15th match of this season’s Serie A campaign. Roma had won both meetings between the two teams a season ago with 5-3 and 3-1 wins respective however Cheivo is a team that has some fight in them they took a 0-0 draw against title challengers Napoli earlier this season they would try to do the same against Roma. With points dropped in the Juventus Inter game Roma had the chance to make up ground in the title race. Several adjustments were made for Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma but the ruthless attack did not change. Roma controlled possession and dominated the first half with several great chances to break the deadlock Chievo’s attack was non existent as Roma continued to light them up but a superb goalkeeping performance from Sorrentino made it more difficult then it would have been otherwise. After the first half it was 0-0 in the second half Roma’s attack was heating up once again however there was some unreal goalkeeping from Sorrentino as he pulled off big save after big save in crucial moments Roma did everything the could a near flawless performance but the goalkeeping was just next level as Roma drop points in Verona. No ground was gained in the title race but with Inter,Juventus and Napoli all dropping points no ground was sacrificed either this title race is still wide open.

Eusebio Di Francesco would make 5 changes to his Roma side inside of their 4-3-3 formation. In goal would be the most inform goalkeeper in Serie A the BIG Brazilian Alisson Becker he currently his second in Serie A clean sheets and will go top with a shutout here. Their would be two changes to Roma defense At left back would be the resurgent Serb Alexzandar Kolarov he has done very well so far in his second stint in Italy. Beside him as the left center back would be Juan Jesus replacing Kostas Manolas. Then Next to him as the other center back would be the Argentine giant 6’5 Federico Fazio.  Finally to make up the defense coming in for Alexandro Florenzi would be the equally versatile Bruno Peres. In Roma’s central midfield unit trio there would just the one change as ROma stayed very similar in the middle. In the central position would be Maxime Gonalons coming in for Danielle De Rossi who would be serving his last of his two match ban.  On the left side would be Kevin Strootman who remains in excellent form  he has been one of the leaders this season. Then On the right to make up the midfield would the World Class Radja Nainggolan and captain for the todays game a very dangerous player on any given match. Up front we would see a few different front three with two changes to the Roman attack. On the left wing would Stephen El Shaarawy who remains as Roma’s best players this season. On the opposite on the right wing coming in for Diego Perotti would be Gerson as the youngster gets another start the young Brazilian has impressive so far this season after being thought of as an after thought last season. Then finally up front as the main strike surprising not Dzeko this time as Roma’s record signing Patrik Schick makes hos first start for the Giallorossi

Roma would arrive in Verona and after speculations and preparations for the game the managers were ready as the match as set to take off on this Sunday afternoon. We kicked off in Verona as saw what we would have expected out the game. Early doors it was all Roma as they controlled the possession in a dominating fashion they looked really strong the ball they didn’t have to wait very long for their control to lead into chances. Radja Nainggolan got two chances in the opening  five minutes. Following a corner from Bruno Peres the ball fell to Nainggolan and he would open the game with the first chance of the contest with an ambitious strike from deep but he misfired. Roma remained in control as another chance was freed up by Roma as Maxime Gonalons as Nainggolan got another chance as he drove the ball just outside the box to strike a well hit ball but a little wide. Roma’s relentless attack would continue Radja Nainggolan as the catalyst this time as the Belgium connected with Gonalons on the cross from the wing his header would be saved by the keeper. It was very much controlled by Roma however Cheivo would get a few rare chances.  Roberto Inglese would hit the bar  off a free kick for Cheivo one of their only good chances to score all the game. Roma’s would open up a bit as they were able to really attack at a high level. Kolarov sent a near perfect cross off a free kick into Fazio the argentine giant got to the ball but it when slightly wide. A few minutes later Roma were at it again as Kolarov hit a strike from deep he missed to the right but less then a minute later Roma were back on the attack. Patrik Schick took a shot from the center of the box after being set up by Kolarov his strike would be saved. Roma would follow that with the rebound shot by Gerson but was saved again a unbelievable double save by Sorrentino. Near the half mark Roma’s relentless pressure only continued as Kolarov got chance got set up by Strootman the Serb shot from a tight angle barley missing. Despite the miss Kolarov has been all over the place both setting up chances and taking some of his own. Late in the half Maxime Gonalons tried from deep to get Roma a goal late in the first half his shot missed as it would stay even in a goalkeeper display from the hosts as it stayed 0-0 despite the Roman domination.

WERE

Patrick Schick brining the ball forward during his first start for Roma

Much what you would of expect from the first half as Roma had 70% had an all out attack against Cheivo as Roma’s defense really didn’t have much do to defensively the youthful line up was working as the attack was flowing just as well as last week. In the second half it would be no different as Roma continued to attack them ruthlessly. El Shaarawy opened up the second half with a strike from distance but it was just a little too high. It looked as if Cheivo were just playing for the draw the keeper was doing a sensational job on the Roma attack. El Shaarawy would set up Kolarov of their next chance as he would strike from deep once again but it would miss. Kolarov just was everywhere in this game. Kolarov would orchestrate yet another chance for Roma off the free kick Kolarov’s cross connected with Gonalons but his header went just wide another great chance. Then with about a half hour to go Roma had the chance of the game Schick dumped the ball into Gonalons in the danger area Gonalons took a exceptionally well taken shot from the center of the box but somehow some way it was saved. Roma then decided to make their first change as Edin Dzeko Roma’s top scorer came in for Gerson as the young Brazilian got a good chunk of minutes once again I’m glad to see him progressing well. The game only intensified as the game went on. Shortly after making the sub Juan Jesus took shot from an El Shaarawy cross but another save by the keeper kept it even. Kolarov a few minutes later set up Dzeko for the winner but the ball was just out of reach for Dzeko to tap it in. With just under 30 minutes to go Roma would make their second change as Diego Perotti came in fro El Shaarawy he had an uneventful first half but done well since the break a decent game from him.  Riccardo Meggiorini tried to test Alisson with a timely strike but it was saved by the Brazilian. Really not much form the hosts in the attacking sense Roma attack would get yet another chance as Radja Nainggolan tried to hit Dzeko with the cross but the shot just missed. With about 10 minutes to go Turkish youngster Cengiz Under came in for Kevin Strootman the Dutchmen put in another good performance. I’m glad Cengiz was brought on he can be a difference maker at times as one of the youngsters in this Roma team. Roma pulled out all the stops to rally for a late goal Patrick Schick tried from the center of the box but was denied with another quality save from the keep then Cengiz Under would give it a go coming very close but just barely missing. Patrik Schick connected with Dzeko on a cross very late but another save kept it even. Roma’s final chance was with Bruno Peres who tried from deep in stoppage time but he was unable to give Roma a late winner. The game would end 0-0 thanks to goal keeping heroics from Cheivo a flawless performance from Roma but they just couldn’t put the ball in the net on this occasion.

GON

Maxime Gonalons Gives Roma their Best chance of the Game But Sorrentino was just too good

A game in which Roma did everything right bedside putting the ball in the back of the net. Roma were sharp passing the ball at a high percentage dominated possession and abused Chevio’s goal. Unfortunately came across a goal keeper that was eagerly up to the challenge who had the game of his life. If Sorrentino isn’t the keeper this is an easy win for Roma Chievo brought practically nothing forward created absolutely nothing a part from a few chances Alisson didn’t really have anything to do. For Roma their weren’t a lack of chances either they just ran into a keeper that wasn’t going to be beat. Roma had 26 shots with several goal scoring chances it was a game that Roma deserved to win without a shadow of a doubt Roma were excellent but they just couldn’t beat the spectacular keeper. Roma came out very differently then they usual do but it wasn’t a tactical error Chevio’s goal was a firing range regardless. We got to see Patrik Schick start for the first time in a full 90mintue you can just see how good this kid can be I thought he did very well create more then a fair few chances he did a very good job filling in for Dzeko was able to balance that role very well. We also saw Gerson get another start in the strike force I thought that he did quite well once again he has truly shown that he is capable of doing well in this league after being barely used by Spalletti last season. Cengiz Under also made another appearance off the bench and did pretty good given the small amount of time that was given to him. This Roma team will be really good in a few years with the talent they have with these three. The biggest difference maker in this game was Sorrentino however the Man Of the match for Roma has to be between Kolarov and Gonalons I thought Gonalons did really well in an attacking sense which is something we haven’t quite seen from him I liked the way he went after it. However Roma’s man of the match for me was Alexzandar Kolarov with his 3rd time I’ve given it to him this season which puts him even with El Shaarawy for the 3rd most. Kolarov was excellent as he always is he competed 9 crosses as well getting his teammates into good situations a lot of the quality chances Roma got were off the back of what Kolarov did on the wing running the flank an all-round good performance. Roma weren’t poor in this game it actually was quite the opposite Roma needed to be a little sharper in front of goal lucky for Roma Napoli dropped points So no ground is lost time to regroup and get ready for Cagliari.
