Score:A.S Roma 1 Cagliari 0FT
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following dropping points away in Verona to Cheivo last weekend Roma look to get back on the right track as they return on Saturday not in the 16th match of the Serie A campaign. Roma will welcome 14th place Cagliari to the Stadio Olimpico here in Rome as they try to get out of their slump. Roma and Cagliari faced off twice during last years campaign with Roma drawing the first meeting winning the second. Both teams in need of a win to get back into form with Roma having drawn two of there last three matches in the league while Cagliari have only picked up three points in the last 5 Serie A matches. Despite Roma’s draws against Geona and Cheivo they remain heavy favorites in this game it is a must win for the Giallorossi as the Romans intend to stay in this title race at the moment the race for the scudetto remains wide open Roma understand the importance of this game. the game would kick off in Rome from the start it would be what you would expect Roma came out very aggressive attacking the Cagliari defense constantly. Roma would be all over them but the defensive style of play kept it even going in the half. In the second half Roma continued to be all over them early in the second half Roma were given a penalty as Diego Perotti stepped up and the man who never misses missed as his shot was saved Roma continued to attack but the later he became the more and more it started to look like dropped points then in the bitter end Fazio scored the dramatic late winner off a free kick from Kolarov as Fazio to keeps Roma in the hunt for the Scudetto. Next week Roma will face a real test as they travel to Turin to face Juventus an important three points for Roma.
Eusebio Di Francesco would make a few changes to his Roma side in their 4-3-3 formation. In goal between the sticks would be Alisson in wonderland. Alisson Becker has been nothing short of special since he has taken over the #1 spot since Wojciech Szczęsny’s move to Juventus. Alisson currently sits atop the Serie A charts with a league’s best 8 clean sheets he is a very difficult keeper to beat. At left back would be Alexzandar Kolarov the Serbian International has been Roma’s best signings this season he has been easily one of the best players this season he is playing well below is age at 5 million its really looked like a massive bargain. Beside him replacing Juan Jesus would be Kostas Manolas and next to him would be his center back partner the Argentine giant Federico Fazio. Then finally to cap off the defense coming in for Bruno Peres would be Alexandro Florenzi Kolarov and Florenzi will play a big part in trying to push the Roma attack forward a very formable defense. There would be two changes to Roma’s midfield in the central midfield position coming in for Maxime Gonalons after severing a two match ban would be the return of Captain Danielle De Rossi to the side. On the left would be the World Class Radja Nainggolan who I see as a major impact player in this match he will be key because of his aggressiveness. The on the right side coming in for Kevin Strootman would be Lorenzo Pellegrini those three would make up the center midfield. Up front there would just one chage to their attack coming in for El Shaarawy on the left wing would be Diego Perotti then on the right side to make his second start would be Roma’s record signing Patrick Schick. Finally up front as the main striker would be Edin Dzeko a very good team with El Shaarawy,Strootmon and Gerson as possible subs off the bench.
After speculations and predictions the match was almost ready to take off as both teams ready in Rome. Would Roma get back on track keeping their foot in this title race or were Cagliari going to spoil the party and end Roma’s run at the title. The game got underway it was very clear from the tip that Roma was the team with the better quality they had complete an utter control from very early in the game as Roma had a firm hand on the possession Cagliari really struggled to hang on to the ball early doors Roma were running it. However the game’s first chance fell to Cagliari and I say chance loosely Nicolò Barella early shot was poorly taken it coasted over the Roma goal as Alisson wasn’t challenged at all. It would turn out to be somewhat of a boring day for Brazil’s number one as he would be hardly challenged again for the remainder of the match. Not long after Roma would get their first chance in the game as it would come from Kolarov as he was set up by Nainggolan the Serbian’s well taken shot was saved from the keeper despite having trouble handling it. Few minutes later Roma’s record Signing Patrik Schick had a very good chance but he just missed from the six yard box. Just in his second start but you could see is promise quite clearly I see him continuing to start as the season goes on he has the talent to be a top quality player in this league. Roma continued to completely dominate the game it was in Cagliari’s danger area almost at all time. With about 20 minutes gone Schick continued to press getting a few really good chances. Diego Perotti sent in a cross for the young striker as Schick got his head to it but it sailed just wide despite the miss he got into great position to make the play. That would show as he got into great space once again as Florenzi sent in a cross Schick got his head to it once again it went just wide. Being able to get into good space on a regular basic shown how well the young Czech has progressed the more game time he gets the better he’s going to be. Just as we were approaching the half hour mark Roma got in a dangerous area once again on a set piece. When Florenzi sent a cross in off the free kick into Dzeko who got his head on it but once again it would be just wide as Roma would continue to push. As we got later and later in the first half Roma kept going after it Radja Nainggolan came close as his strike from deep nearly found the back of the net but is strike was just a bit too far to the left. Minutes later Nainggolan went from deep again but the keeper was able to save in the middle of the box. Roma’s attacker were doing such a great job of getting after it they need to be a little sharper on their finishing but have a brilliant attack going forward. Roma continued to dominate the match but after the first 45 minutes it remained goalless.
Roma’s youngster Patrick Schick showed some signings of Promise in the first half
Roma’s attacking was working very well they just had to work on being a little more clinical in front of goal it did seem like I goal was going to come though as it was non stop Roma. Cagliari was parking the bus hoping for a point stacking 8 players in the box to try to block space near the goal. Roma picked off right where they left off as Radja Nainggolan got a very early strike from deep but again to coasted wide. Radja Nainggolan is very capable of hitting those long rangers they will come at some point. a few minutes later Alessio Cragno brought down Dzeko as Roma were given a penalty and up stepped Diego Perotti however the man who never missed saw his shot saved if he had scored it surely . Despite the miss I trust him at the spot more then anyone he should still be the guy who steeped up for us I think its important to give him the support he will score the next one I have no doubt The momentum dried out slightly and the game became possession based as several minutes would pass by before we saw another chance. With about a half hour to go Roma had a pretty good chance when Aleksandar Kolarov sent in a perfect cross to Daniele De Rossi who got his head to but the shot was saved. Kolarov has been the unsung hero in this game the amount of crosses he has sent in to give service to his teammates as been exceptional he has played such a big part in many games this season. About ten minutes later Roma would make their first change of the game as the pacey speedy Stephen El Shaarawy came on for Lorenzo Pellegrini to add some explosiveness to the attack. The game began to draw on as it got later and later to the bitter end Roma weren’t being able to attack to the same as before so Roma made another change. Kevin Strootman came on for Radja Nainggolan he had a very good game but this was the right sub I thought brining Strootman on was a must. There we now under ten minutes to go it was really getting late on. Roma had a great chance when Diego Perotti fired a well taken shot into the bottom corner but it was dealt with. Roma then brought on their final sub of the Evening as Patrick Schick came off after what I thought was a very good performance as he made room for the Turkish youngster Cengiz Under.Ceingz Under made his impact right away as he tried to strike from deep but missed. Despite that I think has a very good player for Roma and I don’t want to see him go on loan and either does his manager I’m tired of hearing the false rumors he will come good for the Romans. The game was coming to his bitter end a must win dropped points here could kiss their title chances good bye. Roma were given on last role of the dice in the 95th minute the final minute of stoppage time Leonardo Pavoletti fouled Kolarov giving Roma a free kick just outside the box on the wing. Kolarov sent in a cross with all of Roma pushing forward the ball came it Dzeko missed on an attempted header before Manolas got a slight touch on the ball as the keeper came out to save it however the keeper miss stepped as the ball dropped into Fazio who shot it into the back of net for the later winner to on all accounts saved Roma’s season. Fazio ran towards to the Roma fans as he as greeted by De Rossi who jumped on him while Strootman picked up the ball and kicked it in celebrations. After the video review the goal was giving to give Roma the 1-0 win as Fazio saved the day give Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma a massive three points as Roma leave the Stadio Olimpico with a dramatic late winner.
Fazio Scores the Late Winner as the Stadio Olimpico Bursts into Celebration
A dramatic win for Roma sees them keep themselves in the title race the Romans nearly dropping two points at home. Roma really left it to the bitter end tonight at the Stadio Olimpico as Federico Fazio rescue Roma with his 95th minute strike to keep Roma’s Season alive. With the win here today it puts them even with Juventus who they play next week in Turin. This is a massive win without this late winner if could of been all but over for Roma in this seasons Hunt for the Scudetto. A brilliant display from Roma in the attacking sense as they were going at Cagliari all game long but struggled with the clinical finishing needed. Eusebio Di Francesco went for it tactically starting Dzeko and Schick together a partnership that could be very dangerous as the season progresses I thought it worked quite well with both players getting very good chances to score throughout the game as time progresses I think we will see more good performances from this strike force that featured Perotti today. Perotti missed from the spot early in the second half that would of given Roma this lead much earlier very disspointg as he is nearly untouchable from 12 yards out. Roma were able to rebound from it with Fazio late goal it required late heroics largely because of the way in which Cagliari lined up they played very defensive a parked bus was very much placed in the Stadio Olimpico as they played with 5 defensive midfielders they had no intention of winning the game they wanted the point only two players were in attacking positions. Over the 90 minutes Alexzandar Kolarov was the man who stuck out making his impact felt no only did he deliver the game winning ball that Fazio put away but often sent service to the strikers he played a near perfect game he continues to prove how much of a bargain he is. Fazio aside from the goal did really well in his own right as he played brilliant defensively and scored the winner the man of the match he shared between the both of them. Roma need to work on the finishing the chances are there they must be more clinical. We seen Alisson get another clean sheet taking his league leading about to 9 despite not having to do anything practically. This wasn’t Roma best performance but a win like this goes along in this competitive title race. Next week Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma take on Juventus it what will surely be a tense match but Roma will be ready for it.
