Score: Torino 2 A.S Roma 1FT
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following Roma’s dramatic late winner against Cagliari over the weekend to keep Roma in the title race the Giallorossi take a quick break from league play for this Italian cup fixture before heading out to Turin to meet up with Defending champions Juventus on Saturday night. In the return of the Coppa Itaila Roma faced off with Torino in this round of 16 match up. Roma beat Torino about a month ago but this time around it could be tough with Torino having improved a lot since the last time they played it would be tough match we have seen Torino get the best of Roma last season so despite Roma being favorites Torino had chances. Very early in the game Roma looked a lot sharper and were in completely control Torino would get the odd chance but Roma remain mainly control and were very strong going forward Torino was forced to defend a lot of the time Roma hit the bar on a great chance but El Shaarawy but Roma would get some bad luck as Torino would take the 1-0 leading going into the break after a rebound goal. In the second half Roma looked very strong once again looked much stronger but another shot hitting the bar denied them and Torino would get some luck once again as they went 2-0 up. Late in the game Roma were given a penalty but there would be more misfortune as Dzeko’s penalty was saved. Very late Roma would get one back as we saw Patrick Schick score his first Roma goal but it was too little to late as Roma crashed out despite a good performance highlighted by an evening of misfortune. Roma having done everything right in the loss I expect to see very angry Roma side Saturday in their clash with Juventus.
Eusebio Di Francesco would make an astounding 10 changes to his 4-3-3 formation as Roma face Juventus Sunday with many Roma starters being rested. In goal coming in for Roma’s number one Alisson Becker would be Lukasz Skorupski who hasn’t played for Roma in two seasons having been on loan at Empoli. At left back coming in for Alexzandar Kolarov would be Emerson who would be making his first start since his injury at the end of last season. At left center back would Hector Moreno making is 3rd start this season coming in for Federico Fazio. At right center back coming in for Kostas Manolas would be Juan Jesus making his return to the starting 11. Then to cap off the defense at right back would be former Torino man Bruno Peres coming in for Alexandro Florenzi. In the midfield there would be a brand new trio with all three spots being changed. At center midfield it would be Maxime Gonalons coming in for captain Danielle De Rossi. On the left coming in for Radja Nainggolan would be Kevin Strootman who would serve as captain in this game. Then finally on the right side would be Gerson coming in for Lorenzo Pellegrini very happy that Gerson is getting another start he has shown signs of real promise this season. Up in the front three they would be two changes to Roma’s attack on left wing coming in for Diego Perotti would be Stephen El Shaarawy he remains in excellent form this season. Opposite to El Shaarawy on the right wing would be the Turkish youngster Cengiz Under who would be coming in for Edin Dzeko another chance given to the youngster to shine. Then up front as the main striker the only player retuning from last weekend the Czech Sensation Roma’s record signing Patrik Schick its nice to see him get another start id like to see him up front in the Roma attack on a consistent basis a very different look for Roma as many would be resting up for Juventus.
After speculations and predictions the match was almost ready to take off as both teams were ready in Rome. It would A cold rainy night in the Italian capital as Roma and Torino both ready and prepared for a deep run in the cup as the game got underway from the beginning of the game Roma looked in control as Roma were in Torino’s area the majority of the time but Torino had an early chance with Andréa Bellotti. When Mirko Valdifiori connected with Belotti on a cross but his header was saved by the Roma keeper. Roma still maintained there possession and continued to look sharp but Torino got another chance about ten minutes later when Cristian Molinaro missed to the side of the goal. A few decent chances for Torino even more so proved to be a better team they when these two sides faced on last time. Moments later Maxime Gonalons saw is shot from deep coast over the bar. Torino continued to look good as they nearly scored just past the twenty minute mark on a set piece Lorenzo De Silvestri hit a strong header at the Roma goal it really looked like they would score but Lukasz Skorupski made a world class save to keep it goalless. Torino looked good early but Roma was starting to open up getting some really good chances as Roma nearly scored on the chance of the game. As El Shaarawy nearly scored a wonder goal as he stroke it from deep range to beat the keeper only to hit the cross bar and hitting the post on the way down. The chance of the game for Roma very unfortunate not to score the cross bar has not be kind to Roma as they had hit it more then any team in the league. Roma would follow it up with Cengiz Under chance set up from an Emerson cross the Turkish youngster’s shot went well over. I still think he did well to get into the space to strike it. Roma did look the better team based on what was seen on the pitch in the first half however luck would sway into Torino’s favor Andrea Belotti’s header from Mirko Valdifiori’s cross was saved only for Lorenzo De Silvestri to pick up the scrapes and score on the rebound to give Torino the 1-0 lead late in the first half. It kind of just fell to him all he needed to is put is lace through it. Despite a fair few chances the majority of the time the ball was in Roma’s danger area it was a shock lead for II Toro. Roma almost responded immediately Schick sent it to Gerson who then sent it to Under who had a cracking shot as he tried to send it in the bottom corner but was saved another good effort from the young Turk. Emerson’s very last strike from deep that went over would end the half as Torino managed a 1-0 lead going into the second half.
Stephen El Shaarawy hits bar in an opportunistic shot in the first half
A very even first half but Roma still looked a lot better on the ball but failed to defend the set pieces with much success but outside of that Roma had the slight advantage Roma had plenty of time to turn it around. There would be no changes for Roma I don’t think they was anything wrong with the tactics set up by Di Francesco and the team was playing very well despite being behind they certainly had enough time to draw even. In the second half it seemed to be all Roma very early into the second half El Shaarawy gave Roma another chance equalize El Shaarawy took a shot from inside the six yard box coming from a Gonalons cross he stroke it but it was saved by the keeper. The ball continued to stay near Torino’s danger area Torino very much were trying to sit on the lead. Schick was offering a lot for Roma brining the ball forward trying to set up chances for the Romans often feeding off Gerson in the midfield who was having a wonderful game in his own right. Roma nearly were in once again when Emerson sent a cross into the box with the keeper out of position in looked like a wonderful chance but Cengiz Under couldn’t quite chase it down as it was just out of his reach. Roma made their first change as Cengiz Under came off for Diego Perotti I though people were quite harsh on Cengiz he did very well through out the game despite missing a few chances he’s only 20 years old he will come good I full heartily believe in him. Diego Perotti made his impact right away as he sent a cross into Patrik Schick the Czech youngster took a powerful shot but was saved from the keeper. Yet another example of Schick getting forward using his explosiveness in this Roma attack. Moments later another chance would come from Roma as Diego Perotti in the danger area in the box tried to beat the keeper near post but saw his shot saved. Following that play Héctor Moreno connected with Kevin Strootman on the corner but his shot missed. In the second half Roma really dominated. Roma’s relentless attack just continued few minutes later Gerson had a strike from deep saved after a great attempt. A minute later Roma had an excellent chance to score when Kevin Strootman connected with Patrick Schick on the cross Schick’s header beat the keeper but once again it would be more misfortune as it hit the cross bar. Roma’s lack of luck with the cross bar is insane Schick did everything he could to score just more bad luck. Roma would make their second change as Gerson made room for Pellegrini Gerson continues to do well this season and today was no different. A few minutes later Roma would be dealt with some misfortune as Torino’s Simone Edera connected on a cross to make it 2-0. the team that has done practically nothing score on their one chance sometimes football just doesn’t make sense. Dzeko would then be brought in for Kevin Strootman. Within seconds Patrik Schick drew a foul in the penalty area. Edin Dzeko would step up with a momentums opportunity with less then twenty minutes to go. His penalty was saved in a costly moment in the game
Dzeko’s Misses a costly penalty late in the second half
This is the second penalty in a row Roma have missed after missing last week as well. You would think Roma would sizzled out but they were still very much up for it as they remained in control Roma continued their second half domination despite being down by 2 goals. Emerson would cross into the box to find Pellegrini but the Italian’s shot was too high. Following that strike Diego Perotti would try from deep also missing as time continued to tick. Stephan El Shaarawy had a chance as he was set up by Edin Dzeko but El Shaarawy’s shot from distance was saved by the keeper. Then finally in the 85th minute Roma would get one back Diego Perotti sent a deep pass into Torino’s danger area where Bruno Peres would receive the ball as the ball was heading out of bounds Dzeko would try to strike it from Bruno’s pass but the deflected off the defender Diego Perotti would get the ball back and passed it to Schick who slotted it in the bottom right corner to score his first goal for Roma since joining the club in the summer. Dzeko gave Roma a pair of late chances as his shot from inside the box was sacked and his header from Bruno Peres cross missed. It was too little to late as Roma crash out of the cup a game Roma must learn from from this in move forward in what will be a testing match with Juventus in Turin.
Patrick Schick scores his first goal for the club to give Roma life but it wasn’t enough
It was truly a match of misfortune Roma were brilliant and put in a proper performance and were the better team from the start of the match to the end. With that being said football can be a funny thing sometimes as Torino scored twice to beat Roma at home they buried the two chances they had to pull an upset despite Patrick Schick’s late goal. Roma were the better team a thoroughly deserved to go through but they didn’t finish their chances no where well enough. They been having issues in front of goal so many chances today and the last few weeks. Today I thought Roma did well in front of goal they missed some good chances but they were strong chances today was more or less misfortune. Roma hit the bar three times in this game it was very unlucky for Roma not to have scored more then they did. Dzeko’s penalty miss was very costly for Roma I’m not saying he was to blame for the loss but had his penalty had gone in could have been 2-2 and gone into extra time. It was the second penalty missed in two games by Roma missed opportunities Roma need to starting getting it together it could just be bad luck because the chances are coming week in and week out at some point they will fall they have been poor in front of goal at times but they have been rather unlucky several times this season Roma have in the bar more then any other team in Serie A after hitting the woodwork more then any team last year it continues to fail them. Roma have work to do in that respect once Roma start finding the back of the net one a more regular basis we will truly see what this team is capable of because they do have the quality to take the title now they need to put it all together maybe this result will fire them up. Roma played a very young team with Schick, Under and Gerson all starting. I thought they all did vey well Gerson has really impressive me this season as he has proven he can perform at this level. Cengiz Under was heavily criticized today for missing some chances but I thought he did a lot of great things today and I very much want him to continue to get games. Today’s Man of the match is Patrik Schick scoring his first goal Roma goal late and did a lot going forward and for me should remain as a starter. Roma must learn for the result and take that into Turin this weekend as they prepare for Juventus.
Man Of The Match: Patrik Schick (1)
Next Match: @Juventus, Saturday December 23rd, 2017
