Roma’s Misery Continues as Roma Fall out of the Title Race #159

Score: A.S Roma 1 Atalanta 2FT

Stadio Olompico,Rome

Following Roma’s controversial draw at home against Sassuolo Roma prepare for their 19th Match in this seasons Serie A campaign. Roma look to head into the winter break in high sprits as they welcome Atalanta to the Stadio Olimpico as they look to earn a second victory against them this season. Roma beat them 1-0 in the opening match of the season thanks to a Alex Kolarov free kick. Atalanta is a team Roma have struggled with in the past and Roma don’t find themselves in a great run in form infact they been poor the last few weeks while Atlanta been very strong lately. Despite that Roma have created a lot of chances over this period and sooner or later they Roma will start putting them away. Despite the Current form Roma are have much more quality in their side and are the favorites going in to this on although this is a very evenly match game despite the difference in league position. Atalanta is still a very dangerous team they are worth challengers as they would prove their quality early. Atalanta were strong quite early and wasted no time showing their dominant play as Cornelius put away an early chance to give Atalanta the shock lead to make it 1-0 Atlanta. After the goal Roma fell apart Roma didn’t respond according as Atlanta scored again just minutes later a harsh deflection helped Atlanta take the 2-0 lead. It was all Atlanta in the first half Roma barley got a sniff after the first 45 minutes it was Atlanta with the two goal advantage. In the second half Roma looked a little better but it appeared to be too much to come back however Dzeko provided Roma with hope as he scored his 12th goal of the season. Roma tried to claw their way back but it was too late as the damage was allready done. Roma horrid form continued as Lazio leapfrogged  Roma as Roma fall out of the title race as it begins to look like a rebuilding job.

Eusebio Di Francesco made three changes to Roma’s 4-3-3 Formation as Roma look to bounce back from their controversial loss against Sassuolo. In goal would be the Brazilian Big Man Alisson Becker he has been nothing short of special this season. The back four would be exactly the same as the last few weeks Di Francesco has really found a defense that he is comfortable with they have been great this season. At left back would be Alexzandar Kolarov one of the signings of the season in any league he has been terrific not showing his age. Beside him would be the Center back partnership of Federico Fazio and Kostas Manolas the pair has done very well together this season. then to cap off the Roman defense would be Alexandro Florenzi a perfect set up with Kolarov and Florenzi helping the attack pushing them forward while Fazio and Manolas have been a rock in the back. Their would be two changes in Romans central midfield coming in for Danielle De Rossi in the center mid position would be Maxime Gonalons. On the left would be Kevin Strootman coming in for Radja Nainggolan who was suspended and fined by the club for his new years eve antics then on the right side remaining in the staring lineup would be Lorenzo Pellegrini. Roma will miss the likes of Nainggolan and De Rossi but still a very strong midfield that can help push the attack forward. Their would be just one change in Roma’s front three on the left wing would be Diego Perotti he has been excellent this season then on the opposite side on the right wing would be Stephan El Shaarawy another player that has thrived this season he would come in for Patrik Schick. Then as Roma’s main striker would Edin Dzeko on of the best players in the league when he’s on his day he needs to start scoring more goals just one goal in last 14 games today is a good chance to improve on that. A very strong lineup a pacy strike force will make it hard on Atalanta a good bench as well with all the usual subs.

After preparations and predictions  for the match  they were just abut ready to get this massive match underway. Roma and Atlanta would kick off on this Saturday night in Rome. Roma’s continuous poor performances continued to fault them early into the game this Atalanta side was truly up for it. As expected Roma did control the possession as they have been through the season and early in this game things looked to be going well with an early chance from Pellegrini. Stephan El Shaarawy sent in a terrific pass into to space into Pellegrini inside the box the midfielder took a good shot on goal but it was saved by the keeper. A very encouraging effort from the young Italian he has looked very good in the last few games he showed another example of why he should be starting more often. Roma maintained possession but Atalanta looked very frightening on the break which looked very concerning. Roma had another chance from El Shaarawy about ten minutes later took a cracking shot from the side of the box but his sharp shot was ultimately saved. It was clear to me how important it was to score early in this game Atalanta are deadly on the counter attack I’ve watched them many times this season and on the break they are just lethal so the longer it took for Roma to score the more nerve-racking it became. A few minutes later Atalanta got on the break as Alejandro Gomez tried to finish off the break with strike but he missed. It really showed the kind of pressure this attack can bring off the break in the 14th minute Atalanta would get another chance to punish them but this time it would go there way. Andreas Cornelius finished off a wonder break fueled by Josip Ilicic as Cornelius’s shot from the side of the box was buried in the corner giving Alisson no chance despite tremendous effort. Atalanta would take the 1-0 lead Roma were stunned and began to collapse I wouldn’t say Roma gave up but their confidence was gone after conceding. in the 19th Minute it went from bad to worse as Atalanta doubled their lead with a timely deflection Marten de Roon’s shot deflected off a player as the ball trailed into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The deflection prevented Alisson from being able to get in position to save the shot it was a disaster for Roma. Atalanta continued to play excellent while Roma were trying not allow the game to get worse they wanted to leave some hope of a comeback. Atlanta got a pair of chances from Alejandro Gomez and Josip Ilicic but Alisson and the Roma defense made sure that it wouldn’t get any worse. The later it got the more they pushed as they kept the Roma defense on their toes they got some more chances as the game went on and Atalanta nearly increased the lead when  Remo Freuler hit the post coming off a corner. Roma basically were having to just defend very few things were working for Roma. However one man that was doing everything he could for Roma was Edin Dzeko the Bosnian striker came very close with just a few minutes left in the half his strike came very close but was just wide. It would be their last chance of the half in the 45th minute Roma were given a boast as Marten de Roon received a second yellow card he was given a RED CARD as Atalanta was reduced to 10 men.  At the end of the half it was 2-0 Atalanta

Roma Struggled to get anything going in the first half as they found themselves 2-0 down.

An abysmal first half for Roma other then a few chances they were very poor everything broke down the were really missing Radja Nainggolan his misconduct really cost his team tonight it was evident in the first half. I don’t believe it was a tactics issue because EDF put out the best team possible this just wasn’t a confident group at the moment. While one team was very poor Atalanta was flying they look terrorizing every time they came on the counter attack they were ruthless on the break it could of been a lot worse. In the beginning part of the first half things didn’t really change all that much Atalanta continued to get forward  as the chances continued Alejandro Gomez’s shot was saved by Alisson and moments later off the corner Bryan Cristante couldn’t find the target either as his header missed the target. Roma would make their first change of the game as Patrik Schick came in for Lorenzo Pellegrini to try to attack with more aggression. A few minutes after the sub was made Roma started to look a little better as Edin Dzeko got a good chance for the Romans when Alex Kolarov found Dzeko with a brilliant cross but Dzeko’s header was just wide another good chance for the Bosnian. The sub looked to have made the difference minutes later Dzeko had another chance this time connecting from a Diego Perotti cross but his header was saved by the keeper. Several great chances in a row for Dzeko he looked really strong it was going to be a matter of time before he scored. The 56th Minute his moment arrived El Shaarawy hit a through ball towards Dzeko who was getting forward. Dzeko got to the ball while being very tightly manned up and buried it into the bottom right corner to get one back. It would be Edin Dzeko’s 12 goal of the season and his 9th in Serie A

Edin Dzeko finally scores again as he tries to bring Roma back

This has been the only positive from this game from Roma if Dzeko is able to do this more consistently Roma will get out of this slump their in he is key. Now just one down Roma started to look a bit more lively it was an all around poor performance from Roma so if they were able to salvage something it would be a plus Dzeko goal made it possible. After the goal Roma had another chance with Alex Kolarov strikes from distance but it sailed just over. Roma got yet another chance with Dzeko off a corner but once again his header missed. He surly could of done better but since he seemed to be only player on Roma creating scoring chances I’m going to let him off for it. Roma went to the bench for the second time as Cengiz Under came on to try to give Roma a late push. I really like Cengiz off the bench he brings great value as a sub and I hope he continues to get minutes he has improved a little bit more through each appearance . Moments after the sub Diego Perotti tried a shot from deep as it began to get late his shot was dealt with by the keeper. The second half was really controlled by Roma their poor first half was costly. With about 10 minutes remaining Florenzi came really close to scoring as his long strike just missed finishing off their chances continues to be an issue for Roma something that still needs to be addressed. Roma brought on Bruno Peres for Florenzi to try to give Roma something for the last several minutes of the game it was too little to late. Another poor display from Roma. They get passed by Lazio sliding down to 5th place as the race for the Scudetto ends in dismay. Winter break will be huge for Roma as they will attempt to get things right 3rd is still very much in reach.

Disaster continues for Roma and a chance to try to turn their season around. Roma head into the winter break in extremely poor form another abysmal performance as we see same issues continuing to be a problem. After Atalanta scored an early goal Roma for unable to recover as the Romans collapsed at home. Underlying issues continue to be a problem as Romans finishing was just not sharp enough to keep up Atlanta came into this game pull off an upset and with their fast pace and explosiveness they were able to do so. This isn’t one of those things where I could just make excuses for why Roma didn’t do this all Roma didn’t do that we were poor today this is one of the poorest performances this season in the most crucial Game of the Year up to date. Roma went down two goals in the opening 20 minutes a poor game for the defense which does not happen often. The second the goal went in it was over. Roma attack successfully but the finishing was just too poor only five shots on Target  throughout the game and just didn’t do well enough going after them as they were prepared for what Roma came with forward. Edin Dzeko scored in the second half to try to claw their way back scoring his first goal and the last 7 games. That is the only positive thing that came out of its result today Dzeko needs to keep that going Roma want to turn this very negative situation into a positive way. Radja Nainggolan’s absence really proved crucial as Roma just didn’t have enough to come back. Overall Roma just didn’t do well enough today however Dzeko was very strong and looked good going forward he is Roma’s man of the match today as he created the only real threat all game. This game has come at a price as now I can officially say that Roma out of the race of the scudetto to make matters worse Lazio won their game as they’ve Leapfrogged Roma into fourth place. This is the worst possible way to go into the winter break the title race is over for Roma.
