Score: Roma 1 Inter 1
San Siro, Milan
Following a title costing 2-1 loss to Atalanta two weeks ago prior to the winter break Roma look to get back on track as Italian football returns. This Roma side is looking to bounce back from some really poor run of form as the Romans travel to the San Siro to face Inter Milan for the second time this season. They faced on the second match day of the season with Inter winning despite a controversial penalty decision not given while Roma were 1-0 up in that game. Roma are looking for revenge on Inter Milan and Roma’s old boss Lucaino Spalletti. Roma currently on are unbeaten in their last 4 games at the San Siro the Romans are hoping to use that to get this season going once again. Roma have just one win in their last five while Inter Milan are winless in their last five these are two teams that desperately need to start winning games once again in what will surly be a massive match under the lights on this Sunday night. Roma are looking to repeat their recent success here and start playing great football once again. From the start of the match Roma had great difficulty as Inter dominated throughout however about a half hour into it Roma’s had a chance and took advantage as El Shaarawy’s chip gave Roma the 1-0 lead. It was a decent half from both sides but Roma had the 1-0 lead going into the break in the second half it would be a different story though. The Inter attack at the Roma goal was relentless as they continued and continued to push forward. Alisson’s heroic performance was single handedly keeping Roma in the game despite putting in a man of the match performance Roma leaked a goal late as Vecino equalized for it to finish 1-1. An underwhelming performance from both sides as their bitter form only continues..
Eusebio Di Francesco makes two changes in his 4-3-3 formation In goal would be the Big Brazilian Alisson Becker who has been one of the Roman’s best players this season he currently sits up top the clean sheet lead boards with 9 clean sheets. Roma’s back four would remain the same as Eusebio Di Francesco has found a back four that hes really comfortable with and I think its unlikely he will be changing it. At left back would be Alex Kolarov the Serb has been Roma’s best player this season beside him would be the center back partnership of Kostas Manolas and Federico Fazio. Then Finally to cap off the defense at right back would be Alexandro Florenzi a very strong defense with the best keeper in the league this should make it hard on a Inter team who cant hit a barn door at the moment. Their would just be one change to Roma’s midfield in as the central midfielder would be Kevin Strootman. On the left coming back into the side after serving his one game ban would be the Inter Killer Radja Nainggolan then on the right would be Lorenzo Pellegrini the young Italian has been excellent the last few weeks this is a strong enough midfield to get some goals. There would be just the one change to the front three on the left wing would be Stephen El Shaarawy he is a player that can make Inter pay with his speed and can be a threat in open space. On the opposite side on the right wing coming in for Diego Perotti Roma’s wonder kid Gerson I’m so glad he gets a start here hes been quality this season I think he will be hard to deal with on the wing. Then Finally upfront as the main striker possibly his last game in the Roma shirt Edin Dzeko hopefully he gets Roma a much needed win in what could be his last game.
With both teams with their seasons on the line it was just about ready to kick off in Milan with all the eyes on the San Siro. The predictions and speculations were all talk now as the match would get underway as two of Italy’s biggest clubs find themselves in terrible form could one of them turn it around or were they both doomed. In the very start of the game it looked very even the question is would that last. Both Roma and Inter shared a opening chance to try and get the game going. Stephen El Shaarawy took a shot from a Radja Nainggolan pass but his shot was too high as the keeper wasn’t challenged at all a poor shot. Ivan Perisic gave Inter their chance a few moments later as he stroke a ball from the side of the box but Alisson was able to save it in the bottom corner. If I am being honest Inter did look like the better team early doors they just looked much stronger. Inter Milan started to put together several chances as their attack was opening up Antonio Candreva blasted it over then a few minutes later Ivan Perisic was nearly in as he connected with a header coming from a Cancelo cross it was very close but missed. Kevin Strootman gave Roma a good chances a little later coming off a corner from Alex Kolarov Strootman hit it from a complicated angle but he misfired. Ivan Perisic tried to break through for Inter a little later and hit a shot fro the side of the box but Alisson got to it despite the power in the shot. Near the half hour mark Gerson set up Lorenzo Pellegrini with an excellent pass he fired a deep shot that came close but just off. Then a minute later in the 31st minute Roma got their first genuine chance of the game when Alisson sent a deep ball down the left wing off a free kick as Stephen El Shaarawy was freed down the wing he left the defenders in the distance he burned them with his pace as he got through on goal as he chipped Handanovic as the ball hit the back of the net to give Roma the shock 1-0 lead the goal would bring Francesco Totti to his seat along with a big smile for El Capitino. It would be Stephen EL Shaarawy’s 6th goal of the season a tremendous run from El Shaarawy from Allison’s deep kick to put him in that space; El Shaarawy did the rest using his pace to blow the Inter defense away before his excellent finish with an audacious chip. A spur of the moment goal as Inter had been the better team up to that point but sometimes football is about taking those chances. not many more chances were taken in the remainder of the half other then Icardi’s horrid strike that coasted over the bar. After the first half Roma had the 1-0 lead thanks to goal from Stephen El Shaarawy.
El Shaarawy Chips Handanovic to give Roma the 1-0 first half lead
After the break Inter Milan and Roma were ready for another 45 minutes as they were about to resume at the San Siro. At this stage it was a very even game a slight edged to Inter Milan despite being down they showed more quality in their scoring attempts. Inter looked a lot better in the second half and were separating themselves from Roma at least it appeared that way they were doing a excellent job passing at a high level as they were trying to create as much as they could. Their wasn’t a lot of chances coming out of the half though despite a lot a attempted chance creation the game got a bit stale for moments at a time about 10 minutes into the second half surprisingly Roma put together a decent chance with Dzeko. Coming off a corner from Lorenzo Pellegrini Dzeko connected with the cross as he got his head to the ball but sadly it was high and wide. That was a momentous chance for the Giallorossi at 1-0 up Roma weren’t playing all that well so a second goal would have surely been GAME OVER for Inter but the missed shot kept them still in it. There would be more possessional play over the next ten minutes until Inter finally got their much awaited chance from Candreva he tried from deep but once again Alisson came away with a save he was keeping Roma a float by himself he seemed like at some stages. A few moments later Antonio Candreva sent a cross into the ball Icardi connected with his head but another horrid touch from the Argentine as his header missed. A minute later it looked like Inter had a penalty claim but João Cancelo instead was given a yellow card for quite an obvious dive. With an half hour to go Roma made their first change of the match as Gerson came off for Bruno Peres. Minutes later Inter Milan was nearly in as Miranda gave a through ball to Eder he would hit it from the side of the box but once again Alisson would bail Roma out with another tremendous save. A few moments later Icardi gave it another go striking the ball from the side of the box but once again Alisson came up with the save. Roma’s attack was non existent while Inter continued to pressurized Roma Alisson was world class but it seemed like there was only so much he could hold off even at his best Roma needed to attack more aggressively they were very poor in the second half. Roma made another change Juan Jesus replaced Stephan El Shaarawy. Inter had a great chance with about 10 minutes to go as Inter Milan were given a penalty up came Marco Icardi he step up but was DENIED by ALISSION! as Roma still were ahead it what could of been the equalizer. Sadly in the 86th minute despite Alisson’s heroics Inter grabbed a late goal as Marcelo Brozovic sent in a cross to Matías Vecino who blasted his header into the back of the net giving Alisson no chance to save it. The match ended 1-1 in what was a fair result but another costly point dropped from both teams.
El Shaarawy’s goal turned out not to be enough as the points were split in Milan
Inter Milan and Roma knew going into this game how important this was both sides have let themselves down. Inter largely dominated the entire game and should have put this away quite early there inability to do so cost them. El Shaarawy gave Roma the lead with a stunning goal but despite the lead Roma were playing very poorly in fact through the entire 90 minutes Roma’s goal was the only shot on target. They were fortunate to be in the lead in the first place. On the other hand Inter Milan had so many chances to break through on so many occasions and couldn’t deliver in front of goal Alison was in Top Gear and without him inter would have won this quite easily they controlled every aspect of this game. The Romans know the importance of this and they still weren’t able to put in the performance needed to get the three points as the battle for top 4 will only become more difficult and with rumors of Edin Dzeko leaving in the next few days isn’t helping the situation. Roma lacked The Cutting Edge in front of goal and need to be much more smart about their chances the lack of clinical ability is something that needs to be fixed and fixed quickly because it’s not going to be easy the fight for that 4th Spot so they can get back into the champions league is going to be more and more difficult if they continue to perform at this level Roma are a big club and they need to be playing better than they have been this is a horrid form and they need to do whatever it takes to get wins. I think starting Schick going forward is the smartest thing they can do at this point he is the future and we need to start playing him on a more consistent basis he should be starting games the sooner he gets comfortable the sooner he will start scoring. But in all honesty I think Inter Milan will be more disappointed especially because of all the opportunities that didn’t go their way Icardi was not existent in the game and I believe Roma’s defense maintaining the Beast is why Roma came out of here with a point. Today’s man of the match goes to Alisson he was Sublime in front of goal and put in a world-class performance this game could have gotten out of hand if it wasn’t for all his tremendous saves. Roma’s finishing in front of goal continues and continues to be a problem it’s a very concerning issue going forward the next two weeks they play Sampdoria home and away these will be very tough games Sampdoria on their day can beat anyone if Roma catch them on their day it could be trouble. Roma now need to realize their place Roma still a big Club they always will be but at the moment they are in a rebuilding phase the expectations are different now with Salah leaving in the summer we shouldn’t have thought we could repeat the same success trying to build a strong system it’s something that needs to be focused on getting top for is essential another underwhelming performance just adds to the turmoil.
