Edin Dzeko gives Roma a farewell with a last gasp Equalizer after VAR Controversy #167

Score: Roma 1 Sampdoria 1FT

Lugi Ferrari, Genoa

Following Roma’s recent draw in Milan against Inter on Sunday the Romans are back at it again as they finally make up their game in hand. They are in Geona this afternoon as they stay on the road to be welcomed to the Stadio Lugi Ferrari as they prepare to face off against Sampdoria in the 21st match of this seasons Serie A campaign. Last season Roma won two of the three matches played against Sampdoria but as we have seen Sampdoria is a quality team. Roma are given yet another chance to try and turn there season in the right direction. The Giallorossi still have failed to win in their last five matches this is their best chance to start putting more of a fight for the top 4. With Sampdoria next week as well as this week it is an excellent chance to collect a massive six points Roma simply need to start picking up more points. Roma has struggled in front of goal for weeks in the first half of this crucial match Roma looked a lot better they consistently got into Sampdoria’s area looking like a threat for the first time in quite a while they looked very strong through out the first half but sadly all that work wouldn’t amount to anything as Sampdoria took the lead with a late penalty as Roma fall victim to VAR once again as a penalty was wrongly given as the match  approached the break Sampdoria took the 1-0 lead. In the second half Roma showed the spark that Roma have lacked in recent games it was a very good performance from Roma. As the game went on we got closer in closer to another Roma loss however in the bitter end Chelsea linked Edin Dzeko scored a late equalizer in the 90th minute in what could be his last Roma game. Roma earn a point that was certainly deserved as VAR denies Roma of three points for the second time this season.

Eusebio Di Francesco made just two changes to his Roma side inside of his 4-3-3 formation. In between the sticks would be the big Brazilian Serie A’s current clean sheet leader Alisson who is coming off a world class performance against Inter. Roma’s back four would stay identical as we see the same defensive line once again. At left back would be Alex Kolarov the Serbian international has been arguably the best at his position across Italy this season. Beside him would be the center back partnership of Kostas Manolas and Federico Fazio its been a great partnership as they complete each other very well. Then finally to make up the defense  would be the very versatile Alexandro Florenzi. There would also be no change to the midfield going with the same trio. In the center mid would be Kevin Strootman to his left would be Radja Nainggolan and finally on the right would be Lorenzo Pellegrini a very strong unit pleased the see Pellegrini start again we are very strong when he starts. In the front three their would be two changes on the left wing coming in for Stephen EL Shaarawy would be Cengiz Under as the young Turk gets another start I think hes done well this season when hes played hes got a ton of talent in his Locker. On the opposite side on the right wing would be Grégoire Defrel returning to action after not having played honestly I’m not a big fan i don’t really see a way he fits into this team. then surprisingly upfront would be Edin Dzeko as his move the Chelsea has been stalled. A strong team with a solid bench a good enough side to do the job.

The wait is over Roma and Sampdoria finally get to play their much awaited match part one of what will be a part two double as these teams play again on Sunday as well. It is a massive match between two teams that are fighting for European spots after all the speculations and preparations for this match we were ready to get underway as the match kicked off in Genoa. early in the game Roma looked very strong on the ball the complete opposite of the Inter Milan game Roma certainly looked to have the cutting edge they have been missing as of late. Edin Dzeko gave Roma a very early chance in the games opening few minutes. Dzeko received a beautifully hit cross from Cengiz Under the striker would come close with a good attempt but just miss to the right. Roma began to truly dominate the game it was very clear who the better team was as Roma started to look sharp for the first time in months. Near the 15 minute mark Cengiz Under gave Roma another chance as the young Turk tried from deep a well hit shot but coasted a bit wide. Roma continued to push forward and threaten the Sampdoria defense. at the twenty minute mark Lorenzo Pellegrini took a powerful shot from deep it would be saved by the keeper but a very well taken shot. Sampdoria didn’t really offer anything going forward as it was all Roma. Moments later Edin Dzeko gave Roma a chance  with a strike but the center of the box but it was a poor strike as the keeper wasn’t challenged. Gianmarco Ferrari gave Sampdoria the first chance of the game as his attempted header misfired coming off a corner. Minutes later Lorenzo Pellegrini set up Radja Nainggolan with a chance he fired off a shot but his shot was saved. A minute later Lorenzo Pellegrini connected with 6’5 Federico Fazio his header was a bit too high though despite a great effort. The attack was great Roma just looked in great form. minutes later Cengiz Under hit another great cross into Kevin Strootman but his header was saved by the keeper. Roma was playing great football so of course Roma would get some rotten luck. The referee consulted VAR on an alleged penalty and it was given once again Roma got screwed by VAR no way was it a penalty. Fabio Quagliarella converted the penalty to give Sampdoria  an undeserved the 1-0 lead after 45 minutes.

Inactive El Shaarawy and Danielle De Rossi watch from the crowd with Francesco Totti and Monchi

An unfortunate way to end the first half after such a great performance from Roma everything that Roma had struggled with over the past few weeks was improving. After a brief break we were ready to resume the second half with Sampdoria having a narrow lead going into the second half. Sampdoria got an early chance Striker Duvan Zapata took a strike from the center of the box it was close attempt but it missed wide. Despite the early chance Roma still looked very strong going forward and didn’t seem too bothered by Sampdoria as their chances weren’t coming often at that point in time. Several minutes later Roma got yet another chance as a Cengiz Under received a headed pass from Edin Dzeko following a corner the young Turkish Winger hit the ball from a difficult angle but unfortunately missed. Cengiz really is starting to look like a quality player he has made massive improvements from the beginning of the season. There was a bit of possession play for a while with not a lot of chances but a lot of attempted creation from both sides. Sampdoria got in with another chance as the game progressed as Gianluca Capari took an excellent shot from outside the box but Alisson wasn’t having that as he pulled off an incredible save showing once again why he’s the best goalkeeper in Italian football. Moments later Roma will make their first change of the game as birthday boy Patrik Schick came on to replace Grégoire Defrel. I think that was a wise a substitution at that current time Roman needed that something extra and Schick certainly has that and some. Almost immediately after the substitution Lorenzo Pellegrini had a great chance for Roma once again consolidating his excellent performance. After receiving a ball from Kevin Strootman Pellegrini took a very well hit shot from outside the box a very close attempt but it just missed. the Romans attack only continued this time Patrik Schick tried to facilitate a great chance for Edin Dzeko but unfortunately the Bosnian Striker had an abysmal touch as it went high and wide a wasteful chance in a game crying for a goal. Roma with then make their second substitution of the game as Cengiz Under came off after a very inspiring performance. Roma brought on 18 year old Academy graduate Mirko Antonucci as he would make his first appearance for the club. He wasted no time showing what he is capable of less than a minute after coming on his attempted header on goal nearly scored with his shot just missing. At this point time was running out it was extremely important for Roma to at least get a point from this and they were playing against the clock. Sampdoria had a chance to double it with not much time to go Capari completely blew his chance as his strike missed miserably. with just under 10 minutes to go Roma made their last change bringing on Gerson as he replaced the best performer of the day Lorenzo Pellegrini who would get Applause from teammates Stephan El Shaarawy who was in the crowd as well as many of the away supporters. Coming in for him would be the Brazilian youngster Gerson . Roma really started to look like they could drop more points here as Sampdoria had few more chances as time continue to tick. Edgar Barreto miss the chance for Sampdoria, then Capari had a chance but was saved by Alisson once again. With time really ticking down Alexandro Florenzi tried connecting with a Mirko Antonucci cross but Florenzi’s shot just missed to the right. then in the 91st minute in stoppage time Mirko Antonucci delivered in the clutch on his debut as he connected with Dzeko who met his head to the ball as he buried it in the bottom corner to equalize to make it 1-1.It would be Edin Dzeko’s 13th goal of the season and possibly his last goal for Roma. Mirko Antonucci in his short amount of time in this game he has proven that he deserves some more first-team action I was utterly Blown Away by his quality. the game would end in a draw but a game that Roma surely deserve to win on Sunday this will not be the result.

Edin Dzeko beats the Keeper in stoppage time to snatch a point in his farewell

Edin Dzeko rescues Roma in stoppage-time to Salvage a point. In what could be his final Roma appearance as his a amid moved to Chelsea continues to be negotiated. Roma for the first time in weeks put in a very strong performance they did a lot of things well and without any shadow of a doubt they deserved all three points today. unfortunately Roma once again got screwed by the VAR for the second time this season. Sampdoria was given a penalty right before the halftime for something that was clearly obstruction. This VAR video system continues to be a joke as it has denied several points from a lot of different teams this season I believe they need to start taking these things more seriously because at some points it can be a very crucial moment for several teams. I thought Roma did very well today they created a lot and they’re finishing in front of goal was a bit sharper than it has been in past weeks they still have issues with it quite obviously but there doing a lot better working it out. Today’s man of the match for me is a difficult one Lorenzo Pellegrini controlled a lot of the momentum from the Midfield and did a great job of helping Roma push forward he’s an excellent player and continues to prove his value despite his young age he on his day as one of the best midfielders in Italian football and probably the best young Italian midfielder right now so he gets the highest level of praise. However given the late dramatics of the game. Today’s man of the match goes to debutant Roma Academy graduate Mirko Antonucci came on in the second half and not only delivered the game-tying assist to Edin Dzeko in his debut but created several chances for his teammates he wasn’t fazed by the pressure at all as he delivered in the games most crucial moment. Hes someone who’s impressed me today I hope to see him featured in the team later in the season. I also thought Cengiz Under played really well today I think he’s shown that he has made improvements since when he first came onto the scene. Gerson also put in another good performance as the Roman youngsters really stuck out today Patrik Schick did really well today as well he will be able to do an excellent job when he is given the starting role Edin Dzeko did not play well today but he came through when it counted and if this is the last time we see him what a glorious goal it was. Without a doubt Roma deserve this win and when these two teams meet again on Sunday in Rome Roma will win they’ve shown the quality and it has appeared that if they just work on their finishing a little bit more they can start to see improvements.
