Roma - Milan

Stadio Olompico, Rome

Following a 2-1 loss in Ukraine on  Wednesday at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. Roma returns to League action after their midweek European fixture. As Roma prepare for the 25th match of this year’s campaign. Roma attempt to make in 4 wins in a row in the league. The Romans return home as they open the Stadio Olimpico to a red-hot AC Milan team. Roma won the first fixture between these two teams when they met for the first time at the beginning of the season in what was a to 2-0 Roma win at the San Siro. Both teams are extremely hot right now Milan have won four out of their last five while Roma are on a three-game winning streak in the league. Roma have dominated Milan over the last few years Roma currently have a 5 game winning streak against Milan and are unbeaten since 2013 against the Milan side. A battle between two teams that are getting hot just at the right time with the European spots up for grabs for both. A match that was utter domination for Roma in the first half. It was a ruthless Roma attack they struggled to find the net but they were threatening throughout. It really had looked like Roma were going to win this game quite comfortably but in the second half it was a different story an opportunistic Milan team took advantage. Despite being dominated Milan took the lead in one of the first chances of the game with Patrick Cutone connecting on a suso cross to give Milan the lead. Roma continue to dominate but for now playing from behind and could not muster a goal as they disappeared in the second half in fact Milan doubled their lead late hasn’t as the Milan Giants hold on for an upset in Rome. Roma drops to 5th as the Champions League fight only intensifies. Next week it wont get any easier as Roma visit top of the table Napoli at the San Paolo Stadium.

Eusebio Di Francesco made several adjustments going into this big match. After heavily relying on 4-2-3-1 formation over the last few weeks he has gone back to his preferred formation 4-3-3 that Roma used during the first half of the season. He is probably going back to it for tactical reasons. There also were several changes with much of the regulars there. In goal the Brazilian giant one of the best Keepers this season Alison Becker Who currently is second in the league in clean sheets. Roma made one change to the regular back 4 but mostly stayed the same. At the left it would be Alex Kolarov in his usual spot.  beside him would be the centre-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Kostas Manolas. At right back to fill out the defense would be Bruno Peres who replaces Alexandro Florenzi who was benched after a poor showing in the Champions League on Wednesday. Roma comes out with a very strong Midfield very attacking oriented this Midfield makes the formation change make sense. A strong Trio at central midfield  would be the world class radja nainggolan to his left coming in for Carson would be Kevin Strootman and on the opposite side at right Midfield would be Lorenzo Pellegrini who remains in the starting lineup. A very different look for the team up front in a very dangerous front 3. On the right wing DI Francesco opted for Diego Perotti over Stephan El Shaarawy. On the opposite side on the left wing the red hot Turkish Winger Cengiz Under he has scored four games in a row and has 5 goals since the turning of the year. Finally up front as the main striker would to be Patrik Schick as he comes in to replace Edin Dzeko. A great opportunity for Schick to get some more game time after suffering several injuries. Then as always a strong bench Edin Dzeko Stephan El Shaarawy Gerson and Roma’s January signing from Sporting Johnathan Silva is fit and available if needed

After preparations and predictions the match was about to get underway in Rome. As a clash between two of Italy’s biggest teams kicked off on Sunday night at the stadio olimpico. This is a place that AC Milan have struggled to get results over the past few seasons from the beginning portions of the game it seemed to be no different. In the opening 5 minutes Roma’s young star Cengiz Under was set up by Kevin strootman for an opening chance as the Turkish International struck from Deep his attempt was saved by donnarumma but a very early ambitious chance for Roma. Just moments later coming off a corner Kevin strootman was the facilitator once again as his headed pass set up Diego Perotti for a chance of his own he tried an attempt from the six-yard box but he missed just to the left. Roma’s dominance was quite clear early despite possession pretty even Roma were on the front foot in practically every way. Just as we approached the 10th minute Diego Perotti was nearly in again when Patrik Schick set him up Inside the Box perotti took a shot from the side of the box despite a great attempt but his shot was saved By donnarumma. Early it was quite clear Roma was applying great pressure finishing is a part of any battle but the pressure was being inflicted on Milan’s defense was intense. Just 2 minutes after Roma got yet another chance when Diego perotti set up Alex Kolarov who stroke a shot coming from a difficult angle the Serbian missed the shot it was a high degree of difficulty. A continuous dominance scene from Roma throughout much of the first half it was more or less a very one-sided match at least it looks that way from this stage. However it was a lack of shots from Milan that made Roma look so good. By the half-hour mark AC Milan still still had yet to take a shot of any kind. The Milan defense was doing a pretty good job but they weren’t offering anything other than that. Despite Roma’s dominance they’re finishing in front of goal was a problem we continue to revisit this every week at something Roma have really struggled with this season. Deep into the first half Roma had another chance set up by Kevin strootman. However Lorenzo Pellegrini shot from Deep misfired. As the game stayed even the amount of chances Roma had in the first half or could have had in the first half was tremendous but they weren’t making good of them for the most part something that could potentially come back and haunt them. Right before the end of the first half Cengiz Under hit a Long Ranger on that dangerous left foot it came very close;making a donaruma nervous but he would miss just to the right. At the end of the first half it would a scoreless.

Diego Perotti and Suso exchanged words in the first half as things heated up.

After the first half it was all Roma they didn’t do particularly well in front of goal but AC Milan and hadn’t done anything in fact. They had to yet to register a shot of at all AC Milan had zero shots going into the second half. It was a Roma’s to lose at least it looked like it. In the 48th minute Milan take their first shot of the game this is one of those things in football you just need a one opportunity to take the lead an opportunity AC Milan took. Suso hit a cross in to Patrick Cutrone as he beat Allison to give Milan the one 1-0 lead. Allison has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world this season and this might be a bit harsh but I thought he could have done better to save it. It was a tremendous finish but Allison’s performance this season proves he could have saved it. After dominating the entire first half Roma get punched in the mouth. Three minutes later Roma try to respond with a goal of their own. Patrik Schick set up Diego Perotti for a strike from Deep the midfielder gets a good touch to the ball comes very close but just missed. Perotti put in an excellent display in today’s game all the serious chances have come from his foot. I also liked that Patrick Schick was getting involved I still think it will take him some time to get the hang of it now that he’s fully fit but setting up teammates in the way he has in this game showed the promise. Unfortunately in the second half the dominant play Roma had displayed was starting to sway in Milan’s favor. A few moments after perotti shot Milan  got another chance. Franck kessie took a shot from Deep after receiving a well time to pass from bonaventura. kessie’s strike was saved by Allison making amends for the goal with an excellent save. However Milan continued to push at Roma with a pair of scoring chances from Calhanoglu a deep strike saved by Alison and a close Miss just two minutes later. Roma made their first change of the game as edin dzeko came in for radja nainggolan. Minutes after the substitution Allison makes another save from a Nicola kalenik strike. About a minute later Roma made their second substitution. Cengiz Under came off for Gregiore Defrel . I certainly thought this was a mistake under is in phenomenal form and it’s probably Roma’s best scoring option. He’s taking off for a player who has been underwhelming I just didn’t agree with it DiFrancesco is an excellent manager but I disagreed with his decision to do that. Unfortunately in the 74th minutes Milan doubled their lead. Excellent team play from Milan to Midfield as several passes go from one another before Nikola Kalinic sends a through ball into David Calabria who finds himself in a one-on-one with Allison and is able to chip him as the ball goes into the back of the net. This was just an excellent executed play nothing really to be done to stop it. As the game nears the end Roma continue to try to get a consolation goal. Roma came quite close with just over 10 minutes to play when Alex Kolarov struck a ball from Deep a well-hit Ball but was saved. Roma and Milan just for two different teams in the second half Milan took advantage when their opportunities came something Roma was unable to do in the first half. With 10 minutes to go Roma made their final substitution as Gerson came in for Lorenzo Pellegrini. As Time ticked away Kostas Manolas connected on a header coming off a corner but again finishing was poor. A few minutes later defrel came close with a deep shot but once again it would be a missed Roma strike. Roma tried to get a consolation goal but was unable to has time winding down. The final whistle blew with Milan beating Roma for the first time since 2013.

Kessie Battles Nainggolan in the second half as Milan upset Roma earning the victory.

A game in which Roma really needed to win sees them fall at the hands of AC Milan despite dominating the game during certain times. Roma now fall back into 5th after inter and Lazio both picked up wins. A game Roma should have easily won the home side dominated the match at least in the first half but were none existant in the second half . Finishing in front of goal continues to be a problem in this game. As Roma had twice as many chances to score as Milan Unfortunately Allison had an off-day as he was beat twice which rarely happens. Milan had three chances and scored two which really tells the whole story. The players have to deliver at the end of the day but Di Francesco I believe is partly responsible for this result. Changing formation going back to the 4-4-3 after the 4-2-3-1 saw them win three of four games. I’m going to say that was a mistake it wasn’t time to experiment especially with the tough matches upcoming. I understand why he did it but I didn’t believe it was the right call. Also bringing out under for defrel I thought was a strange thing didn’t have any issues with the other subs but that would didn’t make any sense to me the only thing defrel has done for Roma to season score penalty while under has been their best player since 2018 started. And to leave El Shaarawy on the bench I thought was crazy he could of changed the game. Milan took advantages of their chances which proved to be the difference in this match. It was AC Milan’s first win against Roma since 2013 Roma aren’t a strong at home as they are away is something they need to deal with because we don’t want teams to come here and feel like they can win. The Stadio Olimpico needs to be a fortress once again it really isn’t any more nobody fears us at all when we are at home. Today’s man of the match for Roma goes to Diego Perotti he wasn’t the only player that did well but when he was going forward he was very threatening to the Milan defense if he had a little better service I’m pretty sure he would have scored. This loss comes at a very vulnerable moment very costly for Roma they dropped from 3rd to 5th now they sit outside of the Champions League spots. Meanwhile they play League leaders Napoli next week at the San Paolo Stadium that’s going to be a tall task. I think risks were made in these games that were taken advantage of. I didn’t mind Schick coming in for Dzeko because I thought he did quite well you see the potential there you just want him fully fit so we can really see what he’s capable of but the other risks made cost them. A very disappointing evening a game that a first half dominated performance was out classed opportunistic chances from Milan with Roma disappearing in the second half. Milan made Roma pay for their mistakes as challenges lie ahead for Roma.
