Tragic Night In Roma as Roma lose Grip on 3rd #215

Score: A.S Roma 0 Fiorentina 2FT

Roma - Fiorentina

Stadio Olimpico

After a disappointing loss against Barcelona in UEFA Champions League, AS Roma is determined to steady their ship as they welcome a red-hot Fiorentina to the Stadio Olimpico this evening. In what will be the 31st match of this year’s campaign as we seemingly come to the end of the season with less than 10 games remaining. Roma are looking for a season sweep of Fiorentina as they beat them in a wild Affair earlier in the season. This would be Roma’s fourth victory in a row against the team from Florence. As they have a rather good track record against Fiorentina Roma are determined to get this thing back on track despite Florentina’s 5 game winning streak Roma are ready and willing to cool them off. It would turn out to be a disastrous start for Roma as Fiorentina took the lead in the opening 10 minutes only to add to it right before halftime opening up a two-goal lead against the favored Romans . In the second half Roma did everything they possibly could have to come back but unfortunately they’re finishing in front of goal wasn’t sharp enough despite looking like the better team for most of the game Roma fall short as Fiorentina pulls off a massive upset that shakes up the league table. Next week’s match against Lazio now is more important than ever with their Champions League spot now very much up for grabs.

Eusebio Di Francesco makes five changes ahead of Roma’s match against Fiorentina this evening. Roma operating out of a 4-3-3 formation As always in goal between the sticks would be Brazil’s number one Alisson Becker Who currently is third in clean sheets this season. Just one change to Roma’s back 4 as they keep most of their defense intact from the Barcelona match. At left-back replacing Alex Kolarov who rarely gets a day off would be Juan Jesus as the Brazilian gets a rare start. Beside him would be the usual centre-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Kostas Manolas then to fill out the defense occupying the right back position would be Bruno Peres. In Roma’s Midfield there would be two changes going into this match. In the central Midfield position would be Maxine Gonalons replacing Roma Captain Danielle de Rossi. To his left would be Kevin Strootman as he is given another start. Then finally in on the right would be the return of the world-class Belgian Radja Nainggolan as he returns to the side after suffering an injury last week as he replaces Lorenzo Pellegrini. Roma’s attack also made two changes coming into this game. On the left wing replacing Diego Perotti would be Stephan El Shaarawy who will add a speed Dimension to this attack. On the opposite side on the right wing would be Gregiore Defrel who comes in for Alexandro Florenzi. Finally and as the main Striker would be Edin Dzeko who seems to be getting into form at the right time having scored in his last two games. And as always a very strong bench from Roma with the likes of Gerson Lorenzo Pellegrini and Patrik Schick.

After preparations and predictions for this massive match we were just about to get underway in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma very much trying to get back on track after their disappointing and controversial loss at the Camp nou on Wednesday while Fiorentina look to keep their hot streak going against one of the best teams in Italian football. Roma would dominate possession early in the match but unfortunately for Roma that didn’t matter. Football is about taking advantage of the chances you get and Fiorentina weren’t going to let an opportunity slip from their grasp. In the 7th minute coming off a free kick situation Marco Benassi received a pass from the wing he wouldn’t let this opportunity go to waste as he tucked it in the bottom right corner as he gave Fiorentina the shock 1-0 lead. Alisson did everything he could to stop it but it was a slight late reacting to the ball due to his inability to see. An absolute horrid start for Roma less than 10 minutes gone already having to play from behind. After the goal Roma started to take control avoiding panic they started trying to create some chances to get them back in the game. Minutes later Bruno Peres set up Kevin Strootman for goal-scoring opportunity as Strootman struck a ball from distance but his shot was saved. Moments later Bruno Peres sent a ball to Kostas Manolas off of a corner the Greek International connected with his head but the defender missed. Just a few minutes later Edin Dzeko tried to equalize. The Bosnian International nearly they scored but his strike from the side of the Box clanged off the post. It would be Roma’s 18th time hitting the crossbar this season more than any other team in Italy. Roma continued to maintain most of the possession and attacked very frequently they were dominating the game apart from the score they were doing what was necessary to get back in the game so their point of attack wasn’t the problem it was their finishing. Just as the game was approaching the 20th minute of the contest Stephan El Shaarawy a pair of scoring chances. With the Bruno Peres setting up a both of them El Shaarawy struck a ball coming from a Bruno Peres cross but unfortunately was denied by The Keeper. Then a minute later Peres connected with El Shaarawy again but this time he missed to the left. Roma was really in complete control of the match it was finding the back of the net that seems to be the problem. Roma we’re getting chance after chance after chance. Bruno Peres fired a shot from outside the box but the keeper saved. Moments later Radja Nainggolan announced himself in the game with a long-range strike but it would results and another Roma Miss. That chance would then be followed by Edin Dzeko trying to shoot from a tight angle ultimately once again and being denied by The Keeper. It wasn’t a lack of chances it was taking advantage when Roma created them. A few minutes later Bruno Peres tried from outside the box again the keeper denied him. Everything looked good for Roma they were attacking dominating possession weren’t allowing too many opportunities they were playing a good football game they just needed to find the back of the net. Unfortunately it was about to go from bad to worse in the 39th minute Giovanni Simeone created Roma nightmare as he found the back of the net on a shot from the center of the box to give Fiorentina a shocking two-goal advantage late in the first half to make it 2-0. The clock would play out before ending the first half as Roma were in a hole living an absolute nightmare as Giovanni Simeone and Marco Benassi contributing to a Fiorentina 2-0 lead.

Roma - Fiorentina

Edin Dzeko Hits the bar Highlighting a frustrating first half in Rome.

Roma at this stage where living an absolute nightmare having to make up a 2-0 deficit in a game that Roma almost need to win with the gap between 3rd and 5th decreasing. A first half of opportunities being taken Fiorentina having scored there only two chances of the game while Roma had a numerous amount of chances but they’re Finishing Touch in front of goal just wasn’t been good enough. Clinical finishing this thing keeps on coming up there are weeks where they’re excellent from go and there are weeks where they can’t hit a barn door. Lots of shots on target for Roma putting them away seems to be the problem. Eusebio di Francesco makes his first change of the game bringing in Patrik Schick for Gregiore Defrel. Which was a very smart move Defrel has completely flopped I do not want him on this team next season he’s not good enough to play for this club. Mere seconds into the second half Edin Dzeko got a great chance putting his foot through a Juan Jesus cross. Again the goalkeeper was on his day as he made the save. Moments later Patrik Schick got in on the action as his header coming off a free-kick came close but he just missed. The Roma attack just continued down by two they needed to be as aggressive as possible unfortunately it was a tough ask because of how good the Fiorentina keeper was playing. Roma kept coming in Edin Dzeko took a good shot from the center of the box but went too high the clinical finishing in this match continue to be an issue. Few minutes later Patrik Schick setup Radja Nainggolan for goal-scoring opportunity but once again Roma was denied in front of goal. A few minutes later Roma made their second substitution of the day as they brought in Alex Kolarov for Kostas Manolas this move pushed Juan Jesus into Center back with Kolarov taking his usual left back position. For me personally it didn’t make sense why Kolarov didn’t start in the first place. Roma also brought in Alexandro Florenzi for Kevin Strootman. Not long after the substitutions Patrik Schick put his head through a cross off a corner near the scoring but his header was a bit High. Patrik Schick did really well on this game when he’s fully healthy and he has time to develop I still believe he can be an excellent player we just have to give him time. Roma just kept coming and kept coming as we got deeper into the game. Schick would get his head to a cross hitting the bar as luck would have it. Moments later Kolarov connected with Federico Fazio on a corner Roma’s big Defender got his head through it Believe It or Not hitting the bar again. that was Roma’s 20th time this season they have hit the bar they’ve been really unlucky in that respect. Time was working against them their lack of Cutting Edge in front of goal really did cost them in this game. The clock Camp winding down and down and down knowing Roma needed two goals at the very least this was bad news. With five minutes to go Stephan El Shaarawy refused to give up on the game as he attempted It Strike from Deep but it would be saved once again. The Fiorentina keeper really put in a man-of-the-match performance. Then it just as time expired El Shaarawy refused to back down for a late goal scoring chance at the death of the match. I’ll sure always shot from the center of the box was very close as his shot went wide Roma ran out of time. As the Romans get hit with a blunder giving the opportunity to Inter Milan to Leapfrog Roma in the standings as they are now in danger of losing that much important automatic Champions League spot. The match ends as Fiorentina pulling off the upset in a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico as the Roma fans leave the stadium in frustration.

Roma - Fiorentina

Alisson Becker expresses great frustration as his side drops key points at home
Roma fall to Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico on this Saturday evening. A number of wasted chances by Roma cost them three points as an opportunistic Fiorentina team stay hot as they pull off a massive upset against the Champions League quarter-finalists. After suffering a big loss to Barcelona on Wednesday night the Romans were unable to recover from it ultimately give me the opportunity for Inter Milan to leap-frog them in the standings 3rd place is now up for grabs. Ultimately making next week’s Derby against Lazio a must-win if they want to return to the Champions League next season. A number of tactical changes were made prior to the match in the end that may have been what cost them. As Roma sees Fiorentina put away they’re only real chances of the game to take a a two-goal lead into the second half. Roma did everything they could in this match controlling the Possession they had twice as many shots but their clinical finishing in front of goal was just not good enough. Roma did come up against a Fiorentina team that had won five games in a row coming into the match. This game was always going to be tough which is why it was important that Roma respond to the loss on Wednesday. They’re finishing just wasn’t good enough they put themselves in great position to score on a numerous occasions but the finishing touches was not there in a largely important game which Roma needed to win. Unfortunately on their side either as they hit the bar on 3 different occasions. This was an evening to forget as their form at the Stadio Olimpico continues to be an issue this season this is something they must improve on if there are going to be a factor during next season’s campaign. There were very few Brightside’s to this loss as the tactics were wrong for this game. I found many of the changes made completely unnecessary Roma should have played a fully strength team rather than making so many changes. Eusebio di Francesco is absolutely the right manager for this team but I believe he made errors in his approach to this game. it was another abysmal performance by Grégoire Defrel he’s not good enough to play in this team and it was proven today. However there were some positive Roma can take from the game. The chance creation Stills excellent they just need to do better finishing in front of goal. I thought that Patrik Schick did really well coming off the bench supplying several scoring opportunities. I thought that Bruno Peres proved today that he belongs on this team I thought he did a really great job proving his worth. Today’s man of the match for Roma however goes to Federico Fazio who did a great job in defense and was a big Difference Maker on all the set pieces Roma had in this game. This is exactly what Roma didn’t want to happen with the Derby next week Roma have a chance to right this wrong but Roma dropped massive points today that could affect their positioning at the end of the season.
