A Derby to Forget as Dzeko hits bar at the death #221

Score: Roma 0 Lazio 0Ft

Following a magical night in Rome overturning a 4-1 deficit Barcelona to make their first ever Champions League semi-final. Roma return to League action for their 32nd match this year’s campaign in what will be one of the biggest matches of the season. As they mesh up with noisy neighbors Lazio for another Edition of the Derby Della Capatile one of the most ferocious Derby’s in Italian football. Roma are looking to do the league double against there re hated Rivals across the road after beating them to 2-1 earlier this season. There is a lot at stake with both teams desperately fighting for their very important third spot for automatic Champions League qualification. Both Roma and Lazio are even with 60 points the winner of this game could very well determine not only the Champions League places but which Rome Club finishes higher in the table this season. Roma going to this match very confident despite not the best league form the past few weeks what they did against Barcelona in the champions league has them fired up and ready to punish their Crosstown rivals. They will have a daunting task and controlling the league top scorer Ciro Immobile who could be a major difference maker in the match. However Roma’s Edin Dzeko has caught fire at the right time as we are in for a tense match up. Lazio threw away a big lead in the Europa League quarter-finals as they were knocked out by RB Salzburg so they are less confident than Roma . Roma come into this match as slight favorites but on Derby Day anything can happen. This match up did not live up to the hype it was one of the most boring and uneventful Derbies I’ve seen in my life it was in uneventful 0-0 draw a night to forget for both teams as the league table freezes with inter Roma and Lazio all advancing one point as this much-anticipated match was disappointing to say the least.

After success last week against Barcelona with three at the back Eusebio Di Francesco and roma made modifications to their formation. Roma normally operate out of the 4-3-3 formation but ahead of the derby Di Francesco changed to a Christmas tree formation lining up in the 3-4-2-1 this change was largely made because of the success of 3 at the back against Barcelona on Tuesday. In goal as always Brazil’s number one the best Keeper in Italy Alisson Becker. In front of the goalkeeper in the back 3 would be Juan Jesus at left-back with Kolarov once again pushing higher up on the pitch. Beside him as the team’s Center back would be Federico Fazio then finally as the team’s right back the hero from Tuesday night against Barcelona the Greek god Kostas Manolas. Roma would go with four midfielders in the center making slight change from last week. In front of the defense directly in front of Juan Jesus would be Alex Kolarov playing as the left-wing back. Beside him would be Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman as they hold the Midfield. Then finally infront of Kostas Manolas as the right wing-back would be Bruno Peres as he returns to the starting lineup. In front of the Midfield occupying the left wing would be the world class of Belgian Radja Nainggolan. Then on the right-wing would be Patrik Schick who would be getting another start for Roma after a good performance against barca. Then finally up front as Roma the main Striker would be Edin Dzeko the Bosnian Striker has really heated up the last few games he could be a big difference maker in this match. Then as always Roma come with a strong bench that features Under El Shaarawy Lorenzo Pellegrini and others.

After preparations and predictions we were ready to kick things off at the stadio olimpico a battle between two Neighbors that do not like each other. Very early in this match one thing was clear both teams were slightly burnt out. The game started slow and didn’t seem to pick up pace very easily. It was very dull and overall didn’t have that element of excitement that  Derbies typically have especially between two teams that do not like each other. The physicality of this Derby didn’t change it though they were at each other’s throats but in a different way. The inability of patience was the reason for a lot of the tackling in this game both teams are feeling the effects of having played in midweek. Roma dominate The Possession but wasn’t really doing anything with it while Lazio could not stay on side to save their life. Marco Parolo tried to provide an early chance but munch like the game it was poor from his first connection with the ball. They would not be another scoring chance until the 29th minute. That’s how bad this game was. Parolo took another poor effort that wasn’t even close. The game went on and on and on and the lack of excitement and scoring chances was astounded. It’s like both teams woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Right before the end of the half Roma had practically the only good chance all game. When Radja Nainggolan sent a through ball into Bruno Peres the Brazilian struck the ball nearly scoring but was denied by the post. After an atrocious first half the scores remained level.

A frustrated Patrik Schick reacts to a uneventful first half

A really bad game at least it was through the first 45 minutes. It was so unenjoyable to be honest they lacked effort it’s like they were too tired coming off of their mid-week games to show up because no one even showed their face. The Hope was that it will come to life in the second half remember these are Rivals this is a huge game and it’s also a huge game given status of the table. The fans in the city deserved and extraordinary performance but they didn’t get one they got quite the opposite. Roma made their first substitution of the game as Patrik Schick came off for Cengiz Under the Czech Striker had a rough night but then again who didn’t. Shortly after Edin Dzeko try to hit it from the center of the box but his shot was too high. The way the game was played didn’t change there was still no Life. I felt bad for the fans in the stadium having to pay hard-earned money for that rubbish. This is a game that’s featured two of the best strikers in Italy we were robbed of what could have been a excellent game. Lazio’s Adam Marusic had his shot saved by Allison then Ciro Immobile missed from long-range lazio’s Striker had great difficulty dealing with the size physical being and Power of Roma’s 6’5 Center back Federico Fazio who was one of the only standout performers in this game. Roma made their second change of the game bringing on Alexandro Florenzi for Kostas manolas. Soon after the substitution Under tried to strike from Deep to give Roma hope. However despite his high-quality shot it just wasn’t meant to be. Then with about 10 minutes ago Lazio Defender Radu was shown a second yellow card as he was sent off leaving Lazio down to 10 men. The game slightly opened up for Roma at this point throughout the entire game the last 10 minutes was the only time this game had real value. After Kolarov came close off a free kick Roma brought on Stephan El Shaarawy for a late push. The last few minutes of this game Roma really pushed on with edin dzeko getting multiple chances to give Roma the lead. In the final moment of the game Edin Dzeko late strike hit the post to capture a day to forget for both teams. After the final whistle it ended in a 0-0 draw. Which was a fair result neither one of these teams deserved any points they were equally so poor. Both teams just seems burnt out this was a derby to forget Roma won the season series so they have the bragging rights but after today’s performance from both teams no one has anything to brag about.

Edin Dzeko sees his potential winner cling against the post late confirming the draw

I have been watching Roma for about 20 years and I have watched between 50 and 60 derbies and honestly this was the most uneventful boring plain pathetic Derby I have ever seen. The truth of the matter is both teams we’re completely burnt out going into this game. Roma were coming off a come from behind victory against Barcelona in the Champions League it was a gut-wrenching and emotional night for Roma. They were burnt out from that because of what it took out of them to get through to the semi-finals. Meanwhile Lazio had just played Wednesday as Roma’s Crosstown Rivals did the opposite in the Europa League. Lazio threw away a 4-2 lead against RB Salzburg to go out of the Europa League in utter embarrassment. From my point of view neither team were in their right mind for this match. I’m not trying to give excuses but this is the best way I can explain the situation. Understandably I get why they were burnt out but neither team showed up it wasn’t out early pathetic performance from both teams is a very physical game but an impatient one. A lot of the tackles that were being made well because of lack of patience. Neither team turned up for this game despite how important this game truly was for both teams. Roma Lazio and Inter are all fighting for that third spot that automatically guarantees Champions League football next season. This was an opportunity for all three of these teams to take an edge in this battle. All three failed to win their games the table stayed exactly the same with each team just collecting one point. An  really embarrassing performance a night that they all want to forget next week I think they’re likely to be less burnt out and play a lot better there wasn’t one player that really stuck out in this game they lacked quality all around. It wasn’t the fault of the manager’s either Eusebio Di Francesco and Simone Inzaghi did their best to set up their teams for success the players are the ones who let the fans down. However we wouldn’t be saying this if Dzeko late shot didn’t hit the woodwork No one truly deserved man of the match in today’s game but the only positive thing I can say is Federico Fazio did a tremendous job defensively against Lazio’s star Ciro Immobile because of the defensive pressure he put on him he had one of the worst games of his season. So because of that Federico Fazio is my man of the match also Edin Dzko did really well considering and Under brought energy but quite honestly 95% of the players that played let themselves down this is a derby to forget.
