Score: A.S Roma 4 Chevio Verona 1FT
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Following disappointing 5-2 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final at anfield Roma return to League action. Roma currently are on a three-game winning streak in the league as the Champions League race Tightens up even more as Roma can create some separation from Inter Milan and Lazio with a win. Inter Milan playing Juventus at home while Lazio go on the road to face Torino on Sunday witch gives roma the opportunity to create a little bit of space in the race for the final automatic Champions League spot. Roma return home as they as they open the doors to the Stadio Olimpico welcoming Cheivo to Rome for the 35th match of this year’s campaign. These two teams played out a goalless draw in Verona earlier this season due to heroic goalkeeping. Roma obviously would like to create separation if possible with a win here while Cheivo also have something to play for as they sit just two points out of the relegation Zone a few points away from safety all is on the line for both these teams. It would be Roma who would take advantage in the first half as they dominated play in what was a very efficient start to the game. As Patrik Schick opened up the scoring very early in the second half scoring on the first shot of the game to give Roma the early 1-0 lead. They were very efficient throughout the first half a lot of well Taking Chances by Roma. They controlled possession and dominated play Roma provided Relentless pressure as the flying donkeys really struggled to deal with the Roma attack. Edin Dzeko kept his hot streak going as he scored just before the half to make it 2-0 after 45 minutes. In the second half it slowed down a little but the performance was very similar. They didn’t get as many good chances at least early in the second half but they still seem to be in control of the game. In the second half they had some drama as Juan Jesus was sent off for a dangerous tackle giving Cheivo a penalty. However Allison denied a goal-scoring opportunity as the game was flipped on its head. Edin Dzeko and Stephan El Shaarawy scored within minutes of each other as Roma took before 4-0 lead. Cheivo did get one back in the closing minutes but this was a Roma dominated performance as they responded to their Champions League defeat with an inspiring performance which surely puts Roma in the driver’s seat for Champions League football next season. Another three points and another win for Eusebio di Francesco and Roma.
As expected Eusebio di Francesco made formation changes to his team ahead of the criticism he received on Tuesday night. After a 4-2-3-1 formation against Liverpool Roma’s manager reverted back to the 4-3-3 formation a formation that has brought a large amount of success to Roma this season it also happens to be the Francesco’s preferred way to line up. In addition to that there would be a few changes to his Roma side as rest is given to a couple of Roma Stars. In goal between the sticks would be Brazil’s number one Alison Becker Who currently ranks third in clean sheets with 15. Roma’s 4 man defense would be made up of Alex Kolarov at left-back then beside him would be the center back Partnership of Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio and finally making up the defense at right back would be Bruno Peres. Roma’s Kostas Manolas would be rested as he sat out this match. In Roma Central Midfield would be Roma’s Daniele de Rossi in at center mid on the right side coming in for Kevin Strootman who picked up an injury would be last week’s man of the match Lorenzo Pellegrini. Then finally to make up the Midfield on the left side would be Roma’s world-class Belgian Radja Nainggolan. In the Roman attack would be Stephan El Shaarawy on the left wing coming in for injured Diego Perotti. On the right wing shifting over from the striker position would be Patrik Schick who is finally starting to show why Roma brought him in this summer. Then finally up front as the main Striker would be Edin Dzeko who has scored four goals in his last five games he has really heated up at the right time. A relatively strong lineup strong enough to get the three points necessary and as always a strong bench with the likes of Gerson, Under & Florenzi.
After preparations predictions and speculation regarding the match it was time to kick off as both teams took the field. In what would be a beautiful day for football on this hot and sunny afternoon in Rome. A big match for both teams for completely different reasons a battle to stay in the front foot in the Champions League race for Roma and trying to avoid being dragged back into the relegation zone for Cheivo the flying donkeys and the Romans set for battle in Rome. Roma were looking for Revenge from their 0-0 draw with them earlier this season. We were off as the referee blew the whistle to start the match. The excitement got going very early in this match. Very early in this game the flying donkeys gave Roma and early scare as Lucas Castro hit the bar on. Moments later they would get another chance as Roberto Inglese shots from Deep saved in the bottom corner by Allison. A pretty good start with a few chances to kick off the game. However despite their strong start the tide would change very early as things sway into Roma’s favor. In the 9th minute there was a breakthrough for Roma on their first shot of the game. Radja Nainggolan was running on the left wing as he sent in a beautifully hit cross into Patrik Schick who buried it on his first touch putting it into the bottom corner to give Roma they 1-0 lead. A very fast start for Roma scoring on their first shot of the game. Excellent communication between Radja Nainggolan and Patrick Schick perfect Pass Perfect finish and not much more you can ask for. Patrik Schick runs to Radja Nainggolan in excitement with a big smile on his face as he’s really come along over the last few weeks. This would be the second game in a row in which he scored in the league and his third goal of the season we’re finally starting to see what Roma paid for. Roma remains in control the match they did a great job and getting off the field and getting themselves in attacking positions constantly. It would really only take one more goal to kill it off due to Cheivo lack of goal-scoring threats. Roma continued to control the possession battle As they started to open up a little bit more. about 20 minutes into the match Patrik Schick nearly got another one as he got into great position to score once again. He would take a high percentage shot from the side of the box but was denied by The Keeper. Patrik Schick has really done well these last few weeks I think he could be a home run next season. Less than a minute later Roma got yet another chance as Radja Nainggolan shot from Deep unfortunately missing. I say this every week anytime Radja Nainggolan pulls up from Deep it’s a high-quality shot because he’s capable of making them. Roma continue pressurize there danger area the Romans constantly looked like they were going to score. just a few minutes before the half-hour mark Roma had a bit of bad luck on a superb chance. Stephan El Shaarawy used space to get into exceptional space as he got open to collect a Lorenzo Pellegrini pass. He took a cracking shot but he hit the bar. Such bad luck to an excellent chance Roma has hit The crossbar 25 times this season that amount is just astounding. Roma weren’t discouraged though because they kept on getting forward and coming in numbers. just a few minutes later Roma came close again as Daniela de Rossi sent in a cross coming off a sent in a cross coming off a free kick Edin Dzeko fired from close range but put just a bit too much power into it as it went over. you could tell Roma we’re on the cusp of breaking through and about 10 minutes later the moment arrived. in the 40th minute with the first half coming to a close Edin Dzeko would stay hot. Edin Dzeko would put his laces through and Alex Kolarov cross from a difficult angle into the back of the net to give Roma the 2-0 lead. an excellent cross from Kolarov and an excellent finish from the big man. it would be Edin Dzeko 22nd goal of the season it would be Edin Dzeko 22nd goal of the season and 71st goal for Roma. He has now scored in four straight games. Daniele de Rossi connected with a header from Lorenzo Pellegrini but missed and Federico Fazio also failed to find the back of the net Off a corner. As the first half would come to a close with Roma leading to 2-0 thanks to goals from Patrick Schick and Edin Dzeko.
Patick Schick and Edin Dzeko Steal the Show in the first half with two goals.
A very good opening half for Roma as they took control early in this game and didn’t seem to give it back. They attacked well and most of their shots were on target clinical finishing has been an issue this year and their chances looked sharp. Not much to say about the flying donkeys other than in the opening five minutes in which they hit the crossbar but a poor performance they really didn’t do enough in that opening half to make anyone believe that they have a chance. Roma would pick up right where they left off as Edin Dzeko tried to add a second as he fired a shot from the side of the box but was saved by the goalkeeper. Moments later Lorenzo Pellegrini tried to strike from distance but again the goalkeeper was able to handle it. About 6 minutes later we would see some drama. As Juan Jesus was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle. Not only that but Cheivo was given a penalty with a chance to minimize the deficit. Roberto Inglese fired his shots from 12 yards out but was denied by Alison as he saved a much important penalty. The penalty save would Inspire Roma to take it up a notch as they had a lot of momentum and were fired up.
Allison Becker Saves the Penalty as he fires up his Roma teammates
Roma would make their first change as Patrik Schick was taken off for Kostas Manolas due to the red card Roma needed another Defender. Schick did a great job it was unfortunate he had to come off. in the 65th minute short-handed Roma would take advantage Stephan El Shaarawy was dribbling furiously down the left side as he cut into the box putting the moves on the Defenders before he slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Roma the 3-0 lead. Incredible speed and movement along with a fantastic finish for El Shaarawy. It would be Stephan El Shaarawy 9th goal of the season it was nice to see him get back on the score sheet again. then in a blink of an eye in the 67th minute Roma took advantage yet again. Edin Dzeko found the back of the net for his second goal of the afternoon. the Bosnian pulled up from well outside the box to bury the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 4-0 Roma. It would be his 23rd goal the season and his 72nd goal for Roma equaling his goal total at Man City in half as many seasons he’s been an absolute machine for Roma. This was a game that Roma completely dominated the flying donkeys seem to wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Cheivo a little later got a pair of chances although neither was concrete as Allison was left unchallenged on both. with under 20 minutes to go both Dzeko and El Shaarawy came relatively close to scoring again. Roma would make their second substitution of the game with about 10 minutes to go as Edin Dzeko got a standing ovation from the Stadio Olimpico after his 2 goal performance he came off as a Gerson replaced him. this game was all but over for those flying donkeys but at the very death of the game they did get a consolation. Roberto Inglese found the back of the net coming off a corner as has header ruined Allison’s clean sheet. Despite the goal the writing was already on the wall Roma picked up a very convincing and important three points. With Juventus come from behind win at the San Siro against Inter Roma create separation from Inter Milan as they now find themselves four points ahead with three games to go. Eusebio di Francesco and roma got the exact result they wanted as they take a great momentum and confidence into Liverpool on Wednesday as they have put themselves in the driver’s seat for Champions League football next season.
Dzeko Finds the back of the net again and El Shaarawy joins the party adding one of his own.
Roma’s 5:2 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final has been long forgotten as Roma put together one of their best performances of the season. Patrik Schick gave Roma an early lead in the first half and the Romans never looked back as they were determined throughout the entire 90 minutes. With their ongoing battle against Inter Milan and Lazio for the final Champions League spot they were not going to be denied. A game that had drama and excitement not to mention the game’s importance. On a day and weekend where both Inter Milan and Lazio could drop points. Roma delivered as they keep their momentum going forward. After a distraught Roma left anfield on Tuesday night the Romans completely turned around their fortunes with a thrilling dominating victory against Cheivo. As Roma get some momentum ahead of the second leg in the Champions League in which they will have to do the impossible once again. Despite hitting the crossbar twice in this match Roma were on the front foot throughout the difference in quality was clear from the very beginning and their clinical finishing in front of goal today was superb something they have struggled this season with on occasion. After scoring his first League goal last week Patrik Schick found the back of the net again. Which was followed by to Edin Dzeko strikes and Stephan El Shaarawy getting on the score sheet. Drama occurred though Juan Jesus got a red card and Allison saving the penalty. it fired up Roma as they put Cheivo out of their misery in a absolutely dominating performance. Despite a consolation goal being scored it was a superb performance from a team in need of momentum and points as this season comes to a close. There were so many players from this Roma team who are worthy of man of the match Edin Dzeko Patrik Schick Radja Nainggolan Alison Becker so many great performances today. However on this occasion it’s got to go to the big man Edin Dzeko securing his 12th man match award this season. His wife brought his youngest daughter to her first Roma match I’m not sure if he was playing for her but what a performance he put in. Two goals and he did a superb job leading Roma’s Frontline not only as a striker but as a leader for Patrik Schick and this match proved that the two of them can play together. He was just world-class in this game proving that even at his age he can deliver a very important win for Roma as they surely are in the driver’s seat for the Champions League place. they got them that momentum they got confidence in a few days time Liverpool will make a trip to Stadio Olimpico they will be facing a different Roma team. which will give Roma another chance to make history another important three points as it’s all smiles from the capital.
