Roma vs Sampdoria Match Day 12 Preview #386

Coming off a rough battle in the Champions League in Russia. As we saw Roma  get past cska Moscow in a tough 2-1 result winning their third consecutive Champion League match. Roma return home after a three-week road trip to host Sampdoria at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon. Roma have been consistently inconsistent this season the question is which Roma team are we going to see. Sampdoria is not a team to take lightly and Roma are very much aware of that. Sampdoria actually won the season series against the Roman the last year. Beating Roma Stadio Olimpico then nearly doing the same at home if it wasn’t for a late Edin Dzeko equalizer. Much like the inconsistency Roma has displayed the season Sampdoria has cooled off after an unbelievably hot start to the season. Only one point separates 9th Place Roma and 11th Place Sampdoria. A game that almost feels like a must-win for both teams who want to kick-start their campaign as they desire more consistency. Obviously the importance for Roma is at a much higher level with the pressure of Champions League football looming and the team having failed to deliver this season. Roma are coming off a short week from the champions league and hoping to use that momentum to earn a win against a very strong Sampdoria side. However this Sampdoria team has a immense quality. can they pull off the upset? Or will the Romans defend their home as a Roma welcome Sampdoria to Rome in a crucially importance match between two strong teams.

A.S Roma

DiFrancesco could make some adjustments to his side ahead of this important fixture. It has been confirmed that Patrik Schick will make a start against his former team. I find this a little odd given the fact that he has barely played all season. Not to mention that there are rumors he could be on his way out in January. As he is linked to Arsenal as rumors continue to resurface about a potential swap deal with Aaron Ramsey. Unless a formation change is made it appears that edin dzeko may not start the game because in the 4-2-3-1 formation Patrik Schick cannot play a wing position he would be up front in that scenario so unless we see a change it is a little unlikely that Dzeko starts. Outside of that I don’t think it’ll be that many other changes. with daniele de Rossi and Javier Pastore out I think we could see a very similar lineups as we saw in Russia. There could be a little shake-up in the defense but the rest of the lineup should remain a pretty similar. Roma should probably go with the young options in at the attacking Midfield. I would like to see Lorenzo Pellegrini Cengiz Under and Justin Kluivert all play together. They have only started one game together and it was very successful between all three of them. The important player here is Justin kluivert he absolutely tore up cska Moscow on a consistent basis had a completely dominating performance in the Champions League despite not scoring. When you combined his speed with the pace of Under and the intelligence and passing ability of Lorenzo Pellegrini we could see an incredibly  attacking oriented team. Justin Kluivert in the starting lineup changes the mentality slightly because of how well he can get forward with his lightning speed. Roma must utilize his abilities and try to get on the counter attack As often as they can. All three players in that Midfield are incredibly quick and are dangerous in this scenario. Kluivert and under are wicked fast and the passing ability of Lorenzo Pellegrini has all the tools to create those type of opportunities. The big question mark in this game is how effective will Patrik Schick be as a lone Striker he has not played very much this season and you don’t want to be co-dependent on his ability to score. I think this will be a strong lineup definitely one good enough to go toe-to-toe with sampdoria but they are a tough team so Roma really do need to be at their best. Edin Dzeko and Stephan El Shaarawy Off the Bench could be incredibly important especially in a tough game like this but all things considered if they play to their potential they should find a way to get three points at home.

Sampdoria is a team that has consistently lost players year in and year out but have still managed that consistency. For some reason they always done really well against Roma over the last two seasons Roma are yet to win a season series against Sampdoria. Sampdoria have the ability going forward to find the back of the net and had an awfully hot start to the season before cooling off over the last few weeks. They still have that quality in them and only find themselves just a few points behind Roma. Another top 10 finish for Sampdoria would be terrific and they want to continue their momentum and success against this strong Roma side. They will not sit in the back  and relax when they make the trip to the Stadio Olimpico they will go at Roma and attack. They will bring a numbers forward and heavily rely on one of Serie A highest goal scoring Strikers Fabio Quagliarella despite his age he is still a capable goal scorer in Italian football getting him into attacking positions regularly is how they will try to break down this team. However there’s another key component a face  Roma are somewhat familiar with Gregiore Defrel. He played for Roma last year but had no success meanwhile this season he already has 5 goals in the league he’s  going to be a problem if they allow him to be. They have the players and the bodies to pull off the upset but inconsistency is also something we have seen from them Sampdoria must avoid that at all costs.

Bottom Line

This will be a judgment game for Roma they are consistently inconsistent this season. We have seen Roma at their very best and we have seen them have trouble against some bottom teams. Sampdoria fortunately has the same problem they had a red-hot start to the season which featured a 5-0 win against Napoli but since then they have kind of declined and has failed to pick up the amount of points they  probably should have. However two wins in the last five games is not too bad. Roma currently find themselves in 10th place which is completely unacceptable given the history the club and the repetition as one of Italy’s best team. This needs to be a wake-up call for Roma and I think they will get it. This team has been so inconsistent this season so the confidence level of the team is slightly deflated. However coming off a tough Champions League where they should take that momentum into against very tough Sampdoria side. Roma are at home at the Stadio Olimpico a place they have failed to deliver on a consistent basis they need to get that home-field advantage that many teams have and their home stadium. Roma have yet to do that and that is a serious problem this is the best opportunity to show the fans that they are still a serious contender in the title race. Roma’s attacking Midfield is going to be crucial with the speed and athleticism to start a counter attack on a consistent basis if they’re able to get out running Sampdoria will not be able to cope with it. However Sampdoria is a very capable team with goal scorers throughout the team if they’re Stars show up and are able to slow down the high Pace High pressing attacking midfield Roma has maybe there’s a chance for an upset. This is incredibly difficult to call but I think in this situation Roma just need a little bit more and they have to perform or serious ramifications will follow. Roma has to control the Midfield that is how you stop Sampdoria Steven nzonzi and Bryan Cristante will be incredibly important in trying to balance the game in Roma’s favor. If there’s Roma team gets forward it’s good night Sampdoria.
