Without Robin Olsen Shorthanded Roma struggled as they lose a Shocker in Udine#393

Score: Udinese 1 AS Roma 0FT

Following the international break Roma returns to action as they are set to take on Udinese away from home as their welcomed to the Darcia Arena. Roma won the season series against them last season as they have continue to dominate Udinesse over the last decade. In fact they have won 10 consecutive matches against them scoring an astounding 22 goals over that stretch. If Roma were to win today they would be only the third team in history to have a stretch in which they have won over 10 matches against a team. Roma have dominated Udinesse a team that has lost five consecutive games at home you could see it the quality difference early in the match. Roma completely dominate the possession and had the majority of the chances in the first half. They were unable to break through in the first 45 minutes but they showed some real quality in front of goal just not good enough to score. In addition to that they dominated the run of play you felt it was only going to be a matter of time before they scored. We had thought that wrong Udinese would take advantage in the second half and win the game it was Udinese that rose to the challenge despite being dominated in every single area they took advantage in one of their only chances of the game through Rodrigo de Paul they took a 1-0 lead. Roma fought back as much as they could without Robin Olsen in goal they would see what should have been a routine victory for Roma as Udinese ends Roma’s winning streak against them winning their first game against Roma in a decade. Inconsistent Roma fails to deliver again against a bottom-tier side.

Roma got the alarming news that Robin Olsen is out with a muscular problem prior to the match as he adds on to the list of Roma absentees. Roma would come out of their usual 4-2-3-1 formation as some changes would be made due to some of the injuries Roma have on their books. With Robin Olsen out Antonio Mirante would get his first start of the season. Roma’s backline would consist of at left-back Alex Kolarov beside him it would be the centre-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Juan Jesus then replacing Alexandro Florenzi at right back who was being rested for Real Madrid would be Davie Santon. In front of their defense there would be no change in the defensive Midfield with Steven Nzonzi and Bryan Cristante. The pair has played well together this season. Then in the central Midfield would be The Identical Trio from 2 weeks ago against Sampdoria. In the central position would be Lorenzo Pellegrini who has been one of Roma’s best performance of the Season. Then on the left wing would be Roma’s best player this year Stephan El Shaarawy. Then on the opposite side on the right wing would be Roma’s teen sensation Justin kluivert getting another start. Then finally up front as Roma’s main Striker would be Patrik Schick getting another start in replacement for Edin Dzeko who was also being rested for Real Madrid. A strong team but ultimately a short-handed Roma with limited options.

Serie A is back as preparations and predictions were taken prior to this much important match as Roma took on Udinese at Darcia Arena. A massive winning streak was put on the line this afternoon as Roma hasn’t lost to Udine in a decade. Roma have superior quality and it showed early in the match. Stephan El Shaarawy gave Roma a close chance in the opening minutes as Lorenzo Pellegrini setup El Shaarawy with a Chance he saw his shot from distance saved by the keeper. However Roma showed their superiority in the game. They had complete control in the possession battle as it seems like Udinese barely touched the ball. Roma were carving them open almost on a consistent basis but the problem was the finishing wasn’t where it needed to be. Roma was using their midfield to create space to attack the box in the most aggressive way. Patrik Schick came close in the opening 20 minutes as Davie Santon hit a cross into Patrik Schick the Czech Striker connected with his head but missed wide. Just a few minutes later El Shaarawy was in again but another deep strike missed for Roma. Udinese responded with a pair of chances of their own but there was very little to be desired as they weren’t really in the game. The first half became more or less about Roma having failed to find the back of the net with all their chances. Past the half-hour mark Alex Kolarov took a deep strike of his own but again it would be another miss from Deep for Roma. Davie Santon connected with Patrik Schick on another cross this time coming very close as Patrik Schick saw his shot saved. Roma seem to really turn It up near the end of the first half. However they’re finishing in front of goal was poor up to that point. Patrik Schick had another shot saved but came quite close off a Alex Kolarov cross. A few minutes later Kolarov try to strike from Deep off a long free-kick but again was denied. In the closing moments of the first half Bryan Cristante got his head on the ball as his header tailed wide as time expired after 45 minutes it was a 0-0 game.

Steven Nzonzi tries to create something  as of a Roma dominated the opening 45 minutes

It was a slightly disappointing first-half for Roma given the chances that could have had in front of goal they continue to struggle with that this season. They’re creating more chances than anyone in the League this season they have to be scoring more goals. They were hoping that Udinese didn’t make some pay for it. The second half started great for Roma as they had three incredibly good chances. Just a few minutes into the second half Steven Nzonzi came Incredibly close coming off a corner as his header just missed. Justin kluivert setup El Shaarawy with a great chance but another strike from Deep from the Pharaoh misfires. Just moments later Alex Kolarov comes very close with a deep strike that just slightly misses the target it certainly looked at that point in the game that we’re going to break through but the lack of clinical finishing in the final third  cost them if they didn’t take advantage and that is exactly what occurred. In the 54th minute Pussetto released Rodrigo De Paul on a breakaway which was a very dangerous sight and situation the midfielder beat Mirante as Udinese took a shocking 1-0 lead. I think Antonio mirante deserves some blame for the goal he’s a very good backup goalkeeper but he’s not meant to be a starter at least at this age. Robin Olsen has bailed out Roma and those situations all the time the absence of the Swedish goalkeeper couldn’t have been any more clear of his importance in that moment. Steven Nzonzi try to respond just a few minutes later with a header but another close chance by Roma missed. This was followed by a Lorenzo Pellegrini strike from deep that misfires. Roma continued and continued to dominate with chances coming left and right but they couldn’t break through. Roma made their first change of the game as Cengiz Under came in for Justin kluivert who was electrifying but a change was needed. This was followed by another Steven Nzonzi header that once again just missed. I wouldn’t say it’s Nzonzi’s  faults for 3 headers not finding the back of the net but I think he could have done better on those chances. Edin dzeko came in for Patrik Schick as Roma made their second changes the game. Edin dzeko came on and drilled the ball into the bottom corner but was saved. He made an instant impact proving maybe he should have started the match even with Real Madrid in midweek. Lorenzo Pellegrini had another deep ball that was saved it seemed like they couldn’t not find the back of the net the fnishing Touch just wasn’t there. Roma still fought but the desire may not have been there  at the end of the match they gave effort trying to get the equalizer. Under found Edin Dzeko in the box but his header was wide. Few minutes later El Shaarawy hit a hard and Powerful shot as a goalkeeper coming off an Edin Dzeko headed pass but somehow someway they still hadn’t scored. Edin dzeko came close again in stoppage time as his header coming close but still missing. Nicolo Zaniolo who had just come in for the Lorenzo Pellegrini tried finding daylight shot on goal. He nearly scored but it was too little too late As a teenager saw his shot saved as time expired. Roma drop more points in a game they were in complete domination somehow someway failing to deliver the three points. I’m not sure what needs to happen But changes that need to be made after today’s performance that is abundantly clear.

Justin Kluivert and Bryan Cristante gave Roma a spark but it wasn’t enough

A far too familiar sight as Roma drop points to another bottom tier team in Serie A. Roma had absolutely no business losing against a team that had lost five consecutive games at home. I don’t know if it was coming off the international break or what but an absolutely inexcusable performance from Roma. As Udinese shock Roma at home with a 1-0 lead behind a winning goal from Rodrigo de Paul. Prior to the match and had been announced that Robin Olsen had a muscular issue prior to the match and would not start. He wasn’t the only one Kostas Manolas daniele de Rossi Javier Pastore Diego Perotti and others all were out for Roma. This gave DiFrancesco very limited resources to work with as he still wanted to keep his team fresh for Real Madrid on Tuesday because of this Edin Dzeko & Cengiz Under both started the game from the bench. This was a game they dominated from start to finish Roma had over over 70% possession they had a complete and utter control of the match there was no excuse for them not breaking through. It’s not like they didn’t have chances either Roma had chances almost constantly racking up 29 shots with 9 of them on goal. Nine shots on goal is more than enough to score given the team and the weapons that they have offensively. Stephan El Shaarawy Justin kluivert Lorenzo Pellegrini and others they have all the resources to break down a defense in their sleep. I don’t know if it was underestimated their opponents or not taking care of business in front of goal when they should have but it was an unconvincing performance from Roma when you dominate a game like they did you have to close it out. This comes at a bad time as their next two matches are against Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Roma have to find a consistency one way or another or fighting for a Champions League spot is going to end up being a losing battle. It wasn’t a bad performance but Roma needed to finish the job they played really well but if you don’t find the back of the net there’s going to be a problem. Roma have to do something because this team is too good to be playing as poorly as I have at times this season. Today’s man of the match goes to Bryan Cristante I thought he did an excellent job in the Midfield controlling his possession and created quite a lot for Roma. He was one of the few bright spots in what was an otherwise disappointing performance that is the only real positive to be taken if you can start playing like he did a season ago this team will get a lot better. There’s quality throughout this side and they really shouldn’t be in position they are. At the end of the day there’s only so much that can be done by DiFrancesco it comes down to the board selling key players Roma is a champions league team and they deserve to be in the competition this season in which the team was put together has made that an incredibly difficult task. Roma need consistency losing to Spal bologna Udinese and failing to beat chievo Verona just is not good enough for a team as good as Roma. Roma need to be better in front of goal clinical finishing needs improving. Roma have no time to dwell on this as they space Real Madrid on Tuesday nights and then Inter Milan next weekend. Short handed or not responsibility needs to be taken for Roma this season.
