Who I would Have Voted For?
Luka Modric as a one of those feel good stories in football coming from what he went through to what he achieved to is an amazing feat and I’m not taking anything away from him. He deserves all about respect and admiration people may not all agree on the choice and I would happen to go in that same category but he still was a very deserving winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or. I personally would have voted for Cristiano Ronaldo there’s no question in my mind he showed up and should have won his 6th Ballon d’Or after a historic season and year for Portugal’s number 7. Things that are discussed here are impact statistics big game moments and achievements. Last season for Real Madrid he scored 44 goals in 44 games an absolutely unbelievable goal to game ratio. Even at 33 years old he doesn’t seem to be slowing down the number of goals he scores has decreased slightly but he has scored over 40 goals for 8 consecutive seasons even if you look at this season alone he is already scored 11 goals in 18 games in an entirely different leagues. His impact in the Champions League last season can not be denied. In the Champions League he was quite simply the best player in the competition. He scored in all six group games which is an unbelievable historic achievement. He followed that up with crucial goals in both legs in the round of 16 against PSG. Against Juventus last season in the quarterfinals he was the defining Factor scoring to goals against Juventus including an unbelievable bicycle kick in the first leg. In the second leg of the Quarterfinals Juve were on the verge of a historic comeback before a penalty was given at the death Cristiano Ronaldo delivered knocking the Italian Champion out of the Champions League. He scored in 10 consecutive Champions League matches the only player ever to do so. He did not score in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich but had a huge impact in the match. He led Real Madrid it to a third consecutive Champions League title. After the final he was quoted saying it has been an honor and a privilege to play For Real Madrid. Signifying that maybe his time playing for the Los Blancos of Real Madrid was over. During his final season Real Madrid won the Copa de Espana the Champions League the super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. After 9 years and 450 goals he left for Italy on a huge transfer. To me this is where he won the Ballon d’Or. He left Real Madrid Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid and they collapsed. Real Madrid this season have lost to cska Moscow demolished by Barcelona as well losing to teams I barely know. They have a conceded goals in 11 consecutive away games in the league they currently find themselves in 5th place which for Real Madrid is not good enough teams like Alaves and Sevilla both find themselves ahead of Real Madrid without Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile in the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus they are better and stronger than ever and look like they are one of the favorites to take the Champions League. Just last week he scored his 10th goal for Juventus becoming the fastest player to do so since John Charles in 1957. He looks like he’s going to be the favorite to win the Golden Boot in Italy and capture another title for Juventus. Given the impact of Real Madrid without Cristiano Ronaldo he was without a doubt by far the most deserving player for this award. I will not take anything away from Luka Modric but I think Cristiano Ronaldo should have won and I don’t think it is particularly close he would have gotten my vote if you look at the impact with and without him on real Madrid it is quite clear what is value is. Impactful statistically great came through in crucial moments and in the World Cup against Spain he lit the world on fire with a historic hat-trick that included a breathtaking free kick at the death of the match Portugal may have gone out in the round of 16 but there is no debate that Cristiano Ronaldo during 2018 was the most valuable most important player in the world with the stats and silverware to back it up to me he earned his 6th Ballon D’or even if he didn’t get it.
What’s Wrong With the Voting Results
The top 30 voting results of the Ballon d’Or this year is an absolute and utter joke. This really goes back to what I said about the bias of French football. There are players that did not deserve to be on this list and other players who were way too low on this list. Reading some of these names you really question if they know anything about football at all. Of the 30 nominees I agree with maybe three of the candidates. There’s so many things wrong with this list and the voting that went behind it is truly embarrassing. If I went through everything that was wrong with this list it would take me the entire day so I’m just going to look at a few in particular that made my stomach turn. Leo Messi had a sensational season last year even though just the he didn’t with the champions league and the collapse against Roma he had 45 goals and 54 games. Without Neymar Barcelona managed to win the league title while only losing one game which is something no one expected Real Madrid were the big favorites going into the year and Leo Messi and Barca outclassed them from start to finish. He truly shows year in and year out that he is one of the greatest footballers we’ve ever seen. He came in 5th place which is utterly embarrassing. Leo Messi is one of the greatest footballers we have ever seen in the history of mankind there are very few athletes who dominated a sport like Lionel Messi has. He has been the engine of Barcelona he is the club every single year he is a 40-plus goal scorer at the very least. He has had Seasons where he scored over a 100 in a calendar year. Antoine Griezmann got 3rd place obviously he won the World Cup and he’s a great player but my goodness where are his 40 goals? I understand he won the Europa League and the World Cup. He deserves a lot of credit for that because he was hugely important to those Triumphs for France and Athletico but that does not justify a 3rd place finish in the Ballon d’Or he is not the third best player in the world. He had 29 goals in 49 games that is a sensational season but higher than Messi higher than Mohamed Salah I don’t think so. Leo Messi You could argue was the best overall player in 2018 the problem was he did not win enough and they couldn’t get past a Roma team which they had a 4-1 choke hold on. They allowed a historic comeback and Messi did not come off great in those games but that does not damage his reputation and that should not damage his place in World football. I believe a Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to be voted above him but he does not go any lower than 3. It is absolutely ridiculous and it shows the bias that we have seen from the French Football Federation the only reason Antoine Griezmann got the third most votes is because he is French end of discussion. Kilian Mbappe ended up in 4th place I don’t have a huge problem with that obviously he also has the advantage from the French Federation of being French. However he scored 21 goals and 44 games which is a little less than he had with Monaco but he lit up the World Cup as one of these standout Stars he is the most talented youngster in the world at 19. His performances on the big stages has Justified his position as a top 5 player. Then you go down a little bit more and you see Mohamed Salah at 6th. Although he is only slightly below where he should be rated Mohamed Salah is without question one of the five best players in football last season. Despite a trophy less season Liverpool would not have gotten into the Champions League final without him in fact if Mohamed Salah wasn’t on Liverpool I don’t know if they would have gotten past the quarterfinals. He went from a 19 goals to a 44 goal season in one year without question one of the best players in the world. Without question a top-five at least he should have been. Personally outside of the top five the rest of the voting doesn’t matter but they still manage to screw it up. Utterly ridiculous list as we see Raphael Varane 7th Harry Kane in the top 10 Neymar 12th Courtois even on the list Pogba in the top 20 Karim Benzema in the top 20. I could go on and on about how ridiculous this list is. Being French gives you an automatic advantage to this list at least it seems like it we need to change this system as I spoken about this repeatedly There’s too much of biased involved. This voting was an absolute disaster. Again how on Earth is Leo Messi 5th it is disrespect of the highest order much like the majority of the voting results. Change needs to happen because this is becoming a joke.
