Roma’s Player On the Month February: Nicolo Zaniolo #485

The month of February has concluded as we once again recognized Roma for what they done this month as well as acknowledging Roma’s player of the month. February was perhaps Roma’s best month of the season. In fact, it was the only month of this year Roma did not lose a game. Through five games Roma played AC Milan Chievo Verona FC Porto in the Champions League bologna and Frosinone. They currently find themselves on a four-game winning streak and only are a point away from Champions League football. Prior to the month of February Roma suffered the worst loss in almost five years in a 7-1 Abomination against Florentina in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals. Once again Eusebio di Francesco was on the verge of losing his position. The month started off hosting AC Milan and new Striker Piatek who has been an absolute home run for AC Milan. In the second half following a Piatek goal teenage sensation, Nicolo Zaniolo scored a brace in what was 1-1 draw against AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma followed that up as Roma went on the road to face Chievo Verona. Roma was without Robin Olson in that match as Antonio Mirante filled in. It was a simple an easy victory for Roma as a Stephan El Shaarawy Edin Dzeko and Alex Kolarov all scoring in a 3-0 victory. A few days later Roma hosted FC Porto in the round of 16 of the Champions League first-leg in Rome. It truly was the Nicolo Zaniolo show as the Roma teenager scored twice becoming youngest Italian to score multiple goals in a Champions League match. However, Roma lost a little focus as Porto secured an away goal in Roma’s 2-1 win. Roma has been hosted bologna as Robin Olson returned to the lineup. It was an unconvincing performance but they got the job done through goals from Alex Kolarov who became the highest scoring Defender in Europe As well as a goal from Federico Fazio. All in all, it was the Robin Olson show as he morphed into Superman during his return saving practically anything that came in his way. Bologna got one back at the end but Roma held on for the 2-1 win. Roma would finish off the month against 19th Place Frosinone. Another unconvincing performance as Frosinone took the lead on their first shot of the game. Which prompted a quick turnaround from Roma who scored two goals 72 seconds apart from Edin Dzeko and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Then with about 10 minutes, remaining Frosinone equalized as they were on the verge of historic points. However, it would be heartbreak as Edin Dzeko happened to score a goal at the stroke of death in the 95th minute to pull off an emotional victory that will give them confidence and momentum for the Derby this weekend. Roma sits just one point behind AC Milan for the final Champions League spot. Stephan El Shaarawy Edin Dzeko, and Nicolo Zaniolo we’re all worthy of this award but there has to be a winner.

3rd Place: Stephen EL Shaarawy

In the month of February coming in third would be 2-time a player of the month Stephan El Shaarawy. After having missed a good amount of time through injury we got to see Stephan El Shaarawy in action on a pretty consistent basis. He displayed exactly what Roma have been missing at many points this season. I still don’t believe he’s had a bad game all season he’s just been Sensational throughout the year not necessarily the best player but he hasn’t had a bad. Against AC Milan his former Club he brought energy off the bench as Roma near the end of the match in a match looked like Roma could have won at the end. Stephan El Shaarawy against Chievo Verona he performed to his absolute peak one of the best performers during that week without question. For whatever reason, he always seems to score against Chievo Verona. He was a nightmare to deal with on the left wing scoring a goal that had a very high level of difficulty. Making his run around the goalkeeper and then finding the back of the net through a very tight angle. Even though Edin Dzeko may have stolen the headlines in that match Stephan El Shaarawy was without question the man of the match in an important Roma win. However most importantly last weekend he gave Edin Dzeko the opportunity for his stoppage-time goal. Throughout that match else are already was fantastic and got into good spaces looked for the pass almost on a constant basis playing very unselfishly. On the last play of the game he could have done the selfish thing and take a shot but he supplied a near-perfect ball for Edin Dzeko who basically could walk it into the net the Winger also had and another assist that was not credited but it was an unbelievable display from Roma’s most consistent performer. El Shaarawy was close to spotless in the month of February statistically the numbers he put up aren’t going to blow you away but his impact on the match cannot be taken away. He truly has been one of Roma’s best performers this season and it was another Splendid month as he continues to improve as the season progresses.

Runner Up: Edin Dzeko

Edin Dzeko had one of his best months of the season. He had dealt with some injury problems this season and has failed to develop some consistency at times. After a hot start to the season, the Bosnian striker is back performing on a consistent basis. Throughout this month he continues to move up the charts continuously making more Roma history. When Edin Dzeko is scoring goals Roma is a much more effective team and that was on full display this month. It wasn’t just the goal he scores but the impact he has had in the striker position. I think he is the most complete striker in Italian football given the impact he can have in crucial moments and in big games. He holds his position extremely well as the ability to score goals and facilitate opportunities for teammates. This is probably the best months he has had since the first few weeks of the season. He became Roma’s 8th highest scorer in club history and only needs two more to move up to 7th all time. Against Chievo Verona, we saw Edin Dzeko put in a spectacular performance. Even though I gave the man-of-the-match on that day to Stephan El Shaarawy Edin Dzeko made such an impact in that game. He scored a goal on his weak foot hovering in a tight space an Incredibly difficult goal to score but he managed to do it with ease. Not only that but he also supplied an assist to Alex Kolarov in that game he was one of the best performers that week in Italian football. Against FC Porto in the round of 16 in the Champions League, he only continued is excellent form. Nicolo Zaniolo stole the show with his two goals but Edin Dzeko had his foot all over both of them. On the first goal, he facilitated an incredibly challenging assist that was incredibly difficult. Then on the second goal, his shot clanged off the bottom post into Nicolo Zaniolo. It was very unfortunate not to score that goal because it was a good shot and Incredibly accurate. All in all, technically speaking he had two assists and was a big part of Rome has the ability to take the lead in the first leg. That brings us to what we saw last weekend. He made the team of the week for the second time this month after his performance his two-goal performance as he came through in the clutch late against Frosinone. He scored two goals and a strong man of the match performance which was probably the best performance of the weekend. He scored twice in Roma’s dramatic victory. In which Edin Dzeko scored the winning goal in the 95th minute to keep Roma’s winning streak going. He may not have been the best collectively but late in the game, he delivered when his team needed it the most that are the difference between good players and great players. If Edin Dzeko was able to continue this run Roma could be incredibly dangerous it appears he is just warming up. he was close to perfect in the month of February narrowly missing out on player on the month.

WINNER: Nicolo Zaniolo

Winning the player of the month for the second consecutive months is Nicolo Zaniolo. The 19-year-old sensation has been absolutely quality over the month of February, in fact, he has been one of Roma’s best players throughout this season. This month was not only good in terms of performance but in terms of things he has said in the media that can give Roma fans around the world some great encouragement. In an interview this month he said he would like to stay with Roma for his entire career to become a loyal figure and the flag of Rome like Francesco Totti was. Beyond that, he was absolutely spectacular this month came up big and some pretty big games. Roma started the month hosting red hot AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. It was a game that Roma without question was the better team. After conceding a goal in the first half Roma needed a second-half response. Nicolo Zaniolo delivered earning a point in that game for Roma in the match with a brace. However, the game that stands out this month that probably won him this award just off that performance was his display against Porto in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The young 19-year-old Roma midfielder made Italian football history. Zaniolo scored twice within minutes of each other to give Roma an Incredibly important result against Porto. He became the youngest Italian player in history to score multiple goals in a Champions League match. As he joins a very exclusive list of teenagers who have done it. He is taking his season total to five goals and I only see it continuing as the season progresses. He as displays an unbelievable quality in this team he is not just one of Rome’s most important players he is one of the best players in Italian football this season. He’s been absolutely unbelievable for a young player of this age to be performing on the biggest level with the highest stakes has been a revelation to watch. Quite clearly the best transfer in football this summer. He was attached to the deal that sent Radja Nainggolan to Inter Milan. He has thrived in Roma and desires to make it it’s his permanent home. A new contract is going to be discussed this summer and Nicolo Zaniolo and his agent have a desire to get the deal done despite interest from outside of Rome the young star has no interest in leaving the club. He might be 19 but he certainly is not playing like it he has the maturity the physicality and the intelligence of a player Beyond his years. He is very Francesco Totti like in which the way he plays and is going to be an incredibly important part of this Roma teams for the next decade. If he is a man of his word Roma have got their hands on the next star in Italian football. February was probably his best month of the season it was incredibly difficult because Edin Dzeko was fantastic but on this occasion, Nicolo Zaniolo has Justified himself in the city on this team because of his incredible play by all accounts Roma have seams to have gotten the better deal than Inter Milan. For the second time this season the player the months goes to Nicolo Zaniolo he could not have done much better he came through in the biggest moments and performed like a true Superstar.
