Score: A.S Roma 1 S.P.A.L 2FT
Following a victory against Empoli Roma returned to action heading on the road to face SPAL. Two teams are the opposite sides of the table. Roma fighting for the final Champions League spot and SPAL fighting for safety finding themselves just two points from the relegation Zone. When these two teams faced at the Stadio Olimpico SPAL shocked Roma pulling off the upset. SPAL would have the opportunities in front of the home fans to try to do the double over Roma. There evidently was a lot at stake for both teams with the Milan Derby this week. Roma had a chance to make up some ground in the race for Champions League football. Unfortunately, Roma just did not show up despite the fact they were missing some key players they were the second best team throughout the 90 minutes. SPAL took a lead at the end of the first half to give them the 1-0 Advantage with 45 minutes to go. Roma eventually equalized from a penalty taken from Diego Perotti only for SPAL to earn a penalty of their own just minutes later. SPAL re-took the lead from the penalty spot and held on for dear life for the remainder of the match. They were searching for that third goal as Roma started to open up a little but ultimately we’re not good enough. An abysmal showing from Roma losing it yet another opportunity to try to chase down the Champions League football. Ugly display that leaves Roma with very little from this game. Roma was without three key players but nonetheless failed to perform to their standards. Roma only continues to struggle away from home while continuing to be one of the most inconsistent teams in Europe. A shameful display as they allowed a relegation candidate to roll over them. It appears Roma will not be playing in the Champions League this season if this continues that will be a true statement.
Claudio Ranieri would still be limited with his team having Lorenzo Pellegrini Danielle de Rossi Kostas Manolas as well as many others out with either injury or suspension there would be a formation change opting for the 4-4-2 after using the 4-2-3-1 last week. In goal would be the Swede Robin Olsen. In Roma’s back line at left-back would be Juan Jesus. Beside him would be the center-back Partnership of Ivan Marcano and Federico Fazio. Then filling out the defense at right back would be Rick Karsdorp. Roma Central Midfield will be controlled by Steven Nzonzi and Bryan Cristante. On the left wing it would be Stephan El Shaarawy then on the right wing it would be Justin Kluivert. Upfront would be the strike Partnership of Edin Dzeko and Patrik Schick. Roma would come out with a decent bench with the likes of Nicolo Zaniolo and Diego Perotti available.
After predictions and preparations, the match was just about to get underway in Ferrara. Two teams fighting for two very different things. Roma’s battle for Champions League, SPAL fighting for safety. In the very beginning of the game, we would see something somewhat surprising or not so surprising For this Roma team. SPAL didn’t play defensive they went for the throat from the very first kick of the ball. They controlled and dominated possession they played like a team desperate for winning they were going to risk everything to try to win. SPAL at their very first chance of the game as Vicardi put his head through a cross that was a little off. It was a very dangerous attempt they continued to look like the more Superior as they controlled possession and tactically used there five-man Midfield to break down the point of attack. In the 22nd minutes they took the shocking or not so shocking lead Mohamed Fares connected on a header coming off a very well hit cross giving Robin Olsen not a chance in the world to save it as the atmosphere exploded as SPAL took the 1-0 lead. They tried to hit Roma again as Kurtic saw his strike just miss coming very close to a second goal. Roma finally got a decent look late in the first half as Edin Dzeko saw his shot saved from the side of the box. The status of the game remained unchanged as the first half came to a close but right before time expired Roma missed on a Monumental opportunity. Stephan El Shaarawy in space failed to hit the target it was right in his range and could a potentially have changed the outlook on the game but it remained 1-0 in favor of SPAL.
Roma made two changes at the start all of the second half. Diego Perotti coming in for Stephan El Shaarawy and Nicolo Zaniolo coming in for Justin kluivert. Roma started to look a little better at least in the beginning moments of the 2nd half. In the 53rd minute, Roma was given a penalty. After a check from the VAR, it was confirmed. Diego Perotti stepped up and buried it into the back of the net to equalize making it 1-1. Perhaps an equalizer that Roma did not deserve based on their performance. However, it would be short-lived just a few minutes later in the 59th minute Andrea Pentaga was given a penalty of his own he hit a rocket into the left corner as SPAL retook the lead and making it 2-1. Nicolo zaniolo tried to respond from a strike with a strike from deep. Andrea Pentegna did the same as he saw his header go a bit too high. Roma, we’re in the game a little more but SPAL still had the control as it got later and later into the match. With 12 minutes ago Edin Dzeko got denied by the goalkeeper as a hope of points seem to get further and further away. SPAL responded a few minutes later nearly putting away the game for good at Tiago hit the bar with a thunderous header. Roma tried to carve their way back into it but it seemed it was too late. Roma was playing a game against the clock and their time ran out as SPAL do the double over Roma in another unencouraging display from Roma away from home. The manager may have changed but the results are the same.
It was a disaster from the start and it didn’t seem to get much better as the match progressed. Roma fall on their face to another bottom side SPAL sweep season series serious going into this game SPAL for is of the least informed teams in Italy hovering just two points from relegation they had not won a game in over a month and were winless at home since the first month of the season. That turned out to not matter as they beat Roma being without question the better team on the night. An absolutely disgraceful performance Roma’s inconsistencies have not changed with a new coach. It is the players ultimately the reason behind the nightmare of the season. The negativity is largely part of the business Roma did in the transfer market and we all know who’s to blame for that. As far as their approach they changed their formation to pair Schick and Dzeko together and even though it had its moments ultimately it didn’t matter what formation they did not execute. Roma blow me another opportunity to make up some ground in the champions league. Being without starters is always difficult but that does not excuse them for being dominated. They were much more efficient in front of goal had control possession and took advantage of their opportunities. Even though an extra penalty ended up being the difference Roma did not deserve to win. They did not show up to this game and continue to struggle away from home. An absolute abomination of performance very few positives to take from Roma. The biggest Factor was Lorenzo Pellegrini being out he would have opened up opportunities for Roma not saying they would have won but his impact on this team could not be more clear. Roma was missing a ton of players as Ranieri does not have a full Squad yet and even though all those things are true and but he would have made a big impact of the game. SPAL were the better team they executed using short passing attack and their long ball play worked the atmosphere was electric and the team responded incredibly well. it was an embarrassing showing for Roma at no point where they were pulling away or mounting a comeback they fell on their face and spal completely deserves the results. They had relatively the same amount of chances the difference is SPAL took advantage of the opportunities as wasteful Roma blow a huge opportunity on the eve of the international break there’s nothing that can be said that excuses this performance.
