Score: A.S Roma 2 Florentina 2FT
Following back-to-back losses to SPAL and Napoli Roma try to find a way back into the race for the Europa and Champions League. Even though it seems far-fetched with AC Milan and Lazio’s losses they still have a chance. They would be at the Stadio Olimpico playing host to Florentina. Roma has met with the Viola twice this season in which they managed a draw in the first meeting and of course the 7-1 annihilation to Florentina in the Coppa Italia. However, despite that Florentina has struggled this season and has struggled just as much as Roma in recent weeks. Both Roma and Florentina are going through tough times having failed to develop some consistency. This is a match that both of these teams really needed. We got a very exciting and competitive display from both sides. It was a very balanced game with both teams giving their all to get the momentum back they have the missing. Florentina struck first as the viola captain Biraghi found the back of the net to give Florentina the 1-0 lead. It would not last long though Roma would give an immediate reply through their Sensational young star Nicolo Zaniolo to equalize. In the second half on-loan Florentina midfielder Gerson struck as Florentina retook the lead. However once again Rome would find a way to crawl back as a Diego Perotti Wonder strike leveled the match. It was a strong performance from both teams with plenty of opportunities between them but in the end, it would be a point split at the Stadio Olimpico in what was an eventual 2-2 draw in Rome. Even though Roma wanted a win it was a very encouraging performance that Roma can use to finished strong the rest of the season hanging on to the small hope of Champions League football.
Claudio Ranieri opted agonist the 4-3-3 formation in favor of the 4-2-3-1 hoping it would be more effective. There would be a change in goalkeeper after a rough run of form for Robin Olsen he was yanked for the experienced Antonio Mirante. There would be quite a few adjustments in Roma’s backline. At left-back would be ALEKS Kolarov, beside him would be the center-back partnership Federico Fazio and Juan Jesus, then finishing out the defense at right back for the injured Alexandro Florenzi would be Davie Santon. Roma would make no changes in the defensive Midfield as is Steven Nzonzi and Bryan Cristante getting paired together once again. There would be a slight change in Roma’s attacking Midfield. Controlling the center would be 19-year-old sensation Nicolo Zaniolo. On the right wing would be Diego Perotti who has scored in back-to-back games. Then on the left wing would be Roma’s Dutch teenager Justin Kluivert. Combining experience with some youth was a very interesting approach. I would have opted for Lorenzo Pellegrini but given the fact he’s not at 100% from a tactical perspective, it made sense. Upfront As Roma’s main Striker would be the Bosnian Edin Dzeko who Roma need to find his form once again. A very strong bench for this Roma side with the likes of Lorenzo Pellegrini Cengiz Under and Patrik Schick all available.
After preparations and predictions ahead of the match, we were just about to get underway in Rome on a crucial Wednesday night matchup. Roma trying to put what happened over the weekend behind them and try to pick up some points against a Florentina team having similar problems. The third and final match between Roma and Florentina kicked off in the capital. Marco Benassi gave Florentina a very early chance in the opening a few minutes but he was heroically denied by Antonio Mirante. The Roma goalkeeper replaced Robin Olsen ahead of the match a very positive start for the 35-year-old. Just a few minutes later German Pezzella put his head up through a cross that missed the target. Florentina had a few early chances but they didn’t have clear control just yet. Roma was creating chances but nothing was able to materialize up to that point. In the 12th minute, Florentina had a breakthrough. Off a corner Birahi cleanly hit the cross leaving no chance for the goalkeeper as he hit the back of the net giving Florentina the 1-0 lead. It certainly was not an ideal start to the match but Roma showed their character as they responded with a rapid reply. In the 14th minute, Edin Dzeko switched the field with a deep cross to Justin kluivert who occupied the other Wing. The Dutch teenager had the ball just outside the area used his speed to create separation before sending in a well-hit cross into Nicolo zaniolo. The teenagers connected on the play as Nicolo Zaniolo’s header found its way into the bottom corner to equalize for Roma. It would be a Nicolo zaniolo the sixth goal of the season another display of his unbelievable potential. Amazing communication between Edin Dzeko Justin kluivert and Nicolo zaniolo great ball movement and execution in delivering the ball exactly where it needed to be. Just like that, it was 1-1. The game was very balanced with both teams trying to create opportunities to take a very important three points. There was a lot of creation between the two teams but chances weren’t coming as freely both teams really wanted this game and you could tell by the intensity level they were playing at. No team was really in control it was Roma’s intelligence against Florentina’s physical play. Late in the first half, Gerson tried to strike from distance attempting to catch the Roma defense off guard but misfires as the first half winded down with everything in balance. Goals from Biraghi and zaniolo making the difference after a 1-1 first half.
Nicolo Zaniolo gets Roma back on level terms with in Minutes of conceding
A very balanced first half from both sides a great job by Roma to get back into the game immediately. There turned out to be a Breaking Point in the second half where Roma really started to perform well but they had to deal with adversity early on. In the 51st minute, Florentina got themselves back from a familiar face Gerson a Roma player that on the loan with the viola. Gerson launched a cross down the wing and ran with the run a play. A cross coming from the right side ended up bouncing outside of the box where the Brazilian connected on a deep strike as his shot took a slight deflection as he buried the ball into the back of the net to give a Florentine a 2-1 lead. Out of respect for his Club, he refused to celebrate but it was a certain gut punch for Roma. Of all people that could have scored that goal it just had to be one of their own. Typically at this point, Roma would have lost all faith but they continue to Soldier on. Once again Roma hit back with a rapid response Just six minutes later in the 67th minute Roma got back into it again. The orchestrator once again was Justin Kluivert however Bryan Cristante did some amazing work to get Justin the ball in a dangerous position and deserves a lot of credit for the dirty work he did prior to the scoring opportunity Roma’s young winger used speed to create separation. The Dutchman hit a cross into the box taking a minor deflection. As the ball travel back into the foot of Diego Perotti who hit it off the bounce blasting it into the top corner an absolutely stunning strike hitting a rocket into the top corner to equalize. Scoring in his third consecutive game after missing a large part of the Season through injury it was a breath of fresh air to see Perotti again showing his quality. Surprisingly after minutes after the goal, Claudio Ranieri made a rather unusual substitution taking out Justin Kluivert. The Dutch teenager had two assists and was playing at some of his best football of the season. It did feel strange but coming in to replace then perhaps Roma the most valuable player Lorenzo Pellegrini. He came on and certainly didn’t look like he missed a beat making a few passes that justifies he’s healthy. He fell into his role quite comfortably after missing time. It was balanced in the first half after Roma got back into it they did seem by accounts be better team and for the first time in a while, they were playing good football and had key communication between each other. Roma was getting into areas that caused real danger for Florentina. Nicolo Zaniolo strike from a tight angle displayed how well they were getting into those positions. with about 20 minutes ago Nicolo Zaniolo set up Edin Dzeko for a decent chance. The Bosnian Struck from deep but did not have enough power into the ball as the keeper was not bothered. Edin Dzeko actually had a pretty good game but in front of goal, he continues to struggle. Florentina tried to respond with Federico Chiesa striking from distance but it was a poor attempt as Florentina at was struggling to make any impact following their goal. Just a few minutes later Roma made their second change of the game as we saw Cengiz under get a good run out after barely being used against Napoli. Nicolo Zaniolo coming out after an excellent game of football. Roma continues to look dangerous especially using the wing. Lorenzo Pellegrini showed his value in the Midfield as he set up Diego Perotti in perfect position but the Argentine failed to give Roma the lead. A few minutes later Lorenzo Pellegrini tried to get involved with the strike but once again Roma missed. The inclusion of Pellegrini and Cengiz really made a difference in the late stages of the game their movements and their impact was excellent they’re both based on what I’ve seen ready to start and I imagine they will sooner rather than later. Roma continued to look like the much better side in the second half as a looked incredibly dangerous. Following a decent Edin Dzeko strike right before stoppage-time, Cengiz Under attempted an audacious strike from Deep unable to hit the target but we have seen him score from those types of distances. Roma continued to push but they ran out of time as time expired and what turned out to be a 2-2 draw for Roma at the Olimpico. It wasn’t the result they wanted but it was a performance they needed.
Diego Perotti’s Stunner proves the be crucial in an important Roma performance
It was a win Roma really needed they, unfortunately, could not finish the job the overall they should be happy with their performance. The last few games Not only was Roma unable to win but their performance was uninspiring and at times shameful. Tonight was the absolute opposite they showed character willingness to fight back and played great football. After criticizing Claudio Ranieri after his inability to put Pace in the line-up against Napoli tonight he certainly did that and it came through. Florentina drew blood first and everyone thought here we go again. Roma as a team with a very exposable defense that’s not even completely healthy it could have gotten a lot worse. Roma instantly responded with a quick response. Justin Kluivert linking up with Nicolo Zaniolo in a nearly perfect connection to a pin point cross. As we know Gerson helped Florentino retake the lead. He is on loan from Roma and opted not to celebrate which I really respected. Once again Roma fought back and showed their character. They did an exceptional job of moving the ball and getting into dangerous areas and unlike in the past few games they were able to execute on their chances even the chances they were unable to put away they put themselves in position to break. Once again Justin Kluivert using his pace cut through with a tremendous cross the ended up in the back of the net after a wonder strike from inform Diego Perotti. He scored his third game in a row and finally Roma showing a very positive performance. A lot of how they performed was very encouraging 3 points is what Roma really wanted but a display like that gives Roma that confidence and momentum that they truly really need right now in the chase for Champions League race that almost seems unachievable. An argument can be made that Roma should have won this game they completely controlled the second half and after some important substitutions bringing on Under and Pellegrini, they looked incredibly dangerous. Florentina sort of fell out of the game in the second half as Roma took control. Even though it is just a point it certainly was an important one. Not because they got the points but that’s how they got it. They put in an incredibly strong performance and you saw positive vibes throughout the match. We saw the return of the Pellegrini who made a pretty instant impact in the second half and looked like he hadn’t lost a step. A vast majority of Roma played superbly. However sometimes in matches like this, we need to recognize an unsung hero. Bryan Cristante was absolutely superb in Midfield and has been incredibly consistent for the majority of this season he controlled and used his creativity to effect Roma’s excellent ball movement. He is the one transfer signing that really has looks like it has sand out. However, on this occasion, the man of the match goes to Justin Kluivert in a game like this of this magnitude he delivered a two-assist performance in a crucial match. Had Roma lost this game the erosion would have only continued I thought Justin Kluivert really performed exceptionally well he has had a very quiet campaign but tonight against a strong Florentina side he had a brilliant display. He did serious damage during his performance. Collectively Roma just worked together this is how they need to play for the rest of the season if they can replicate the performance they had tonight and work out a few things they certainly have a shot at European football after everything seemed to be lost over the weekend. three points would have been incredibly important but the performance justifies confidence and momentum going forward the team takes on Sampdoria away from home this weekend. Roma needs to bring that same energy because it was truly a positive display for everyone involved.
