Score: A.S Roma 1 Genoa 1FT
Following a five-match unbeaten run Roma headed out on the road To face Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on a Sunday afternoon. In the reverse fixture Roma won a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in Rome. It was a momentous opportunity for Roma not only to win the season series between the teams but keep Atlanta’s toes as they keep the pressure in the Champions League race. With Atlanta’s victory over Lazio a loss or dropped points could evidently almost certainly end their Champions League ambitions. A lot was on the line as Genoa vowed to fight off relegation hopefully confirming safety soon while Roma continue to fight Atalanta for the final Champions League spot. In the first half Genoa surprisingly looked like the more superior team as they had a lot of opportunities to break the game open early. It was a tough battle in the first half as Roma came into the game as it progressed. It was a back-and-forth battle with both teams having their moments. Despite several opportunities for Genoa it was goalless after the first half. In the second half it continued to be a struggle for both teams in hopes of breaking the game open. Roma did it take advantage in the second half as they retook control appearing to be the more in control. The question was whether or not someone was even going to break through at all. Roma eventually had their moment as Stephan El Shaarawy struck for Roma giving the visitors the lead with not much time to go. It had looked like three points was going to be taken back to Rome with them. However at the near end of the match Genoa found the equalizer as Christian Romero stuck as he drew even for genoa. Even more so we would get some very late drama as Genoa were given a penalty at the very death of the match. Roma avoided collapse as Antonio Mirante saves Antonio Sabrina’s penalty as Roma earn a point that damages there Champions League Ambitions in a match that feels more like a loss.
Claudio Ranieri would set his team up out of Roma’s as usual 4-2-3-1 formation. A very similar team to the one we saw last weekend with just a few changes with the injury to Justin kluivert gets him out of Roma’s starting 11; and Bryan cristante and Nicolo zaniolo returning from suspension. In goal between sticks would be the experienced Antonio Mirante. In front of him in Romans backline at left back would be Alex Kolarov. Beside him would be the centre-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Kostas manolas. Then to fill out the defense occupying the right back Position would it be Roma’s Captain Alexandro florenzi. In Roma’s defensive Midfield we would see these somewhat regular pair of Bryan cristante and Steven nzonzi. In Roma’s attacking Midfield there will be only one that changes made from the weekend. In the central position would be Lorenzo Pellegrini. On the left wing would be Roma’s player-of-the-month Stephan El Shaarawy. Then on the opposite side on the right wing returning to the starting lineup after suspension would be Nicolo zaniolo. An upfront As Romans main Striker would be the Bosnian Hitman edin dzeko. As well as a sum of vitable options on the Roma bench.
After predictions and preparations the match was just about to get underway on a Saturday afternoon in Genoa. It would be Roma trying to strengthen their Champions League ambitions and Genoa side trying to separate themselves from the relegation Zone as they only sit 6 points from safety. The match kicked off at the stadio Luigi Ferraris one of Italy’s most difficult places to play. To the surprise of many it was Genoa who got things going very early. In the opening 5 minutes Miguel Velasco hit the post from a free kick. A very nerve-wracking start for the Romans. Genoa continued to build on that as Miguel Velasco came at dangerously close from distance. Which was only followed by Christian Kouame who came close from a challenging angle but misfired. Despite that Genoa what was building momentum while Roma was just trying to find their way back into the game after their early chances. The visitors came within the brink of taking the lead as Federico Fazio did a tremendous job putting his head through a corner kick conducted by Lorenzo Pellegrini. The Argentine converted on his header nearly perfectly however Radu made an unbelievable save saving the ball on the line as it remained even. A tremendous first opportunity for Roma as Genoa prevent an opening goal by the skin of their teeth. This was followed by three straight misses in secession buy Genoa despite appearing to be the better team they were failing to hit the target. Genoa seems to be in control but defensively Roma were making things very difficult. Just past the half-hour mark edin dzeko came close to a Roma breakthrough putting his head through a cross but put it a little wide. Despite Genoa’s agreesivness Roma were slowly growing into the game. Lorenzo Pellegrini then it took a fast cross and hit it a little bit wide. It had not been Lorenzo pellegrini’s best performance as he had some deficiencies in the first half. Even though Roma seem to have a few chances here and there Genoa seemed to still be more of a threat to score. As time was about to expire Genoa came on the brink of a breakthrough as Christian Kouame saw his shot from the corner only just not have enough distance to find me bottom corner as time expired in what was a scoreless first 45 minutes.
Battle intensifies in a scoreless first half on Saturday afternoon
It was not the best first-half from roma but they were still very much in the game. Genoa continued to have issues finding the back of the net as well as staying on side as it really seemed to stump their progress. Roma made the adjustments and came out of the second half with more confidence and momentum on their side. The stadio Luigi Ferrari is always a tough place to play and it would take a strong second-half performance to pull away. The match started to sway in Roma direction as Roma seemed like a much more attacking team in that second half. Nicolo zaniolo struck a really well hit ball from outside the box that looks like a could have been an opener but Radu made to save to keep things level. Just a few minutes later Alexandro florenzi tried to pull one from Deep coming off a corner but missed. Genoa tried to retaliate as lapadula connected on a header that was dealt with by Antonia Amarante. Roma had a great chance just moments later as a Bryan cristante set up Lorenzo Pellegrini in what seems like a near break away. Lorenzo Pellegrini had space and time to operate but it was a poor touch from Lorenzo Pellegrini wasted what seemed like a golden opportunity. It had been a less-than-impressive day for the Roma midfielder. He was taken off just a few minutes later for Patrik Schick. Roma continued to try to break through as a edin dzeko strike misfired from close range. As time progressed it was becoming closer and closer to a 0-0 draw. Claudio Ranieri went to his bench again as he brought on Justin kluivert for Nicolo zaniolo who had a very productive afternoon. Genoa continued to be on the back foot. The moment finally arrived in the 82nd minute. In what was a perfect display of communication. As a Justin kluivert connected on a well-hit crossed into the box. Edin dzeko got his head to it as the ball dropped to El Shaarawy who was left mutually alone El Shaarswy stuck the ball it into the bottom corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. It would be the 11th goal of the season for El Shaarawy. In what was a relatively late goal for Roma. It was a battle over the final minutes but unfortunately Roma was losing the grip on Champions League in the 89th minutes Christsn Romero connected with a header placing it into the back of the net to equalize making it 1-1. Roma had a few late chances but it appeared the game was slipping from them. In stoppage-time Antonio Sabrina was brought down in the Box. Genoa were given a penalty in the 95th minutes with the opportunity to confirm safety. Antonio Sabrina stepped-up but Antonia mirante made a crucial save denying what would have been three points from Genoa. The match would end 1-1 as Roma Champions League ambitions seem to die in Genoa.
El Shaarawy’s strike and Mirante’s late save fueled the drama but Roma dropped important points.
Champions League football may have just slipt between Roma’s fingertips. It was not the performance Roma needed but it was the result they probably deserved. Playing in Genoa at the stadio Luigi Ferraris is never an easy task the atmosphere can be Electric and evidently it can cause difficulties. This was an important match and roma just didn’t come through. Roma did some nice things tonight they fought back they never gave up and they continued to look for that winning goal. However with all that being said it was not good enough. Genoa has been the single worst team in the league over the last 5 games Roma should have ripped through them and picked up the three points that seemed almost necessary. Lazio did not do their rivals any favors as Atlanta beat them at 3-1 this morning. A win for Roma would have minimized the point deficit to just one. They missed that opportunity tonight. With Juventus next week even though they have nothing to play for it will be a tough match this result could not have come at a worse time. The 1-1 draw in all honesty reflected the match and it was the result that both teams deserved. Neither team was quite good enough to justify three points but it hurts not only Roma but Genoa who had a legitimate opportunity at the end to almost certainly confirm safety from relegation. In first half Genoa had the majority of the chances but Roma did enough to keep themselves into the game. It was a strong performance defensively for Roma but eventually bad marking on a late Corner allowed Genoa to get back into the game. The momentum swayed into Romans direction in the second half as for a large portion of the game Genoa had to defend as Roma controlled possession and was orchestrating dangerous attacks on a somewhat regular basis. Eventually El Shaarawy gave Roma the lead but a slight collapse from Roma allowed Genoa get back into the game with a very late goal. In the very end antino Mirsnte saved Roma from what would have been an embarrassing result. With all that being said this is a game that largely as potentially wrecked Roma’s Ambitions for Champions League football. It’s not quite over but the writing seems to be on the wall there is only nine points available through the rest of the season and roma will have to play their absolute best and also hope for a little bit of luck if they’re going to get Champions League football. However from the outside looking in it certainly looks like an improbable task. I appreciate the way they fought back and never gave up on any play it wasn’t a bad performance but the performance was just not good enough in a match they should have won without any difficulty. Edin dzeko is tonight’s man of the match I thought he did really well getting the position helping his teammates and playing an all-around performance. Roma drop two points away at Genoa as of their Champions League ambitions take a serious hit in a match they should have been able to finish.
Man Of the Match: Edin Dzeko
