Player Of the Year: Stephen El Shaarawy
Roma’s Player the seasons goes to Stephan El Shaarawy who had an unbelievable campaign. From the beginning of the season to the end of the season he was Roma’s most dangerous asset displaying consistent performances on a regular basis. This was his best season statistically in the league since he was wearing an AC Milan shirt many years ago. It was not a great season for Roma missing out on the Champions League after making the semi-finals last year. But nonetheless, Stephan El Shaarawy was a very positive talking point in what was a relatively negative season. He scored 11 goals in the league and displayed absolute brilliance constantly throughout the entire campaign. He barely had a single game in which he did not show consistency. Even in games Roma lost Stephan El Shaarawy still performed. Unfortunately, injuries somewhat affected his season, had he stayed completely healthy throughout the entire season he would have broken 20 goals this season I am sure of it. His performance against Napoli and Juventus we’re absolutely Sensational. Even though Roma missed out on Champions League those are very big results at important points of the season. His goal at Napoli allowed Roma to steal points at the Stadio San Paolo. Meanwhile, even though Alessandro Florenzi stole the headlines in Roma shocking 2-0 victory vs Juventus Stephan El Shaarawy was incredibly important in that crucial game. Making things very difficult on the opposition is what he has done all season. Quite honestly there was not a close second for this award he has been Roma’s best player easily throughout this campaign winning the Players a month four times. Not only was he Roma has best player this season he was one of the best players in the entire league this year. He made it into my team of the season and has continuously showed progress since his arrival in Rome. This has been probably his best season in the shirt. Quite honestly continues to be one of the most underrated players in the entire league. There is never a moment where he’s not a problem. He is so dangerous in which the way he moves without the ball as I said on numerous occasions there is not a player that moves better without the ball in world football than Stephan El Shaarawy in addition to the all that he made it back onto the Italian national team where he belongs. He continues to be one of the most underrated players in Italian football his value to Roma from the attacking perspective is as high as anyone. He’s so explosive with his movements makes intelligent plays in important moments. No match is too big for him the bigger the moments the better he performs and he has done that for a consistent basis this season. In every game, he has shown how dangerous he can be. He has been at these shining star in an otherwise disappointing season without question player of the year for Roma.
Most Improved: Lorenzo Pellegrini
Roma’s most improved player this season goes to Lorenzo Pellegrini. Lorenzo Pellegrini incredible progression shows the strides he has made this year. Lorenzo Pellegrini was brought back to Roma last season and showed some promise as a young player. We did not view him as a superstar just yet late in the year against Juventus we saw the quality that he has and the potential he has in front of him. This season he has been one of the best players for Roma when healthy. His value in the Midfield cannot be understated. During moments where he was injured Roma’s Midfield did not function in the same way. Games he missed highlighted his impact within the team. After playing somewhat of a defensive Midfield role Roma played him higher up the pitch in a more attacking aspect. He was more comfortable in that position and was allowed to thrive on a more frequent basis. He has separate himself as one of the best players on Roma and in my opinion, he is the future of the club going forward. He still is relatively young and has Room to Grow but he has taken a tremendous step in being a player we all know he’s capable of becoming. His performance against Lazio in the derby was incredibly special coming off the bench because of an injury he scored the winning goal assisted the second goal and won the free kick which resulted in Roma third goal. Performances just like that show how far he has come. He was incredibly efficient in the Champions League as well as being one of the leaders and assist and scored the game-winning goal in Russia against cska Moscow. The impact of Pellegrini is so abundantly clear when he has played Roma just communicate and function at a much higher level. He made amazing improvements from just a year ago. He has all the capabilities to become one of the best midfielders in Italy. He’s only going to continue to improve next year but this year was a big step for him.
Signing Of The Season & Young Player of the Year: Nicolo Zaniolo
The Signing of the season and young player of the season both go to 19-year-old Rising Star Nicolo Zaniolo. A player along with Moise Keane who is the future of Italian football going forward. The youngster had a breakout season that nobody was truly expecting. He came in the deal that sent Radja Nainggolan to Inter Milan he turned out to be the crowning Jewel of that transfer. Radja Nainggolan was a fan favorite at the Stadio Olimpico. He was one of the players that Roma keeps near and dear to their hearts. The entire transfer was an emotional situation but the return ended up being very positive. Nicolo Zaniolo at the time was a young teenager that was doing some great things in Inter Milan youth set up but had failed to make the senior appearance. It was unsure what his role would be inside this Roma team. He ended up playing a crucial role for a vast majority of the season. He was without question the breakout star in Italian football. Being named Serie A young player of the year. He made his debut against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu you could see the Promise very early in the season. He ended up continuing to progress and when he had his opportunity he took them. Against Sassuolo he displayed performance of absolute brilliance. Causing a Defender and goalkeeper to hit the floor scoring one of the best goals of the season. He scored four goals in the league which was a great return for such a young player. This included a goal against AC Milan which got Roma out of a rut they were dealing with at the time. However, Nicolo Zaniolo has crowning moment was against FC Porto in the Champions League round of 16. He became one of the youngest players in history to score two goals in a Champions League game. Twice given Roma and Advantage going into the second game even though they failed to advance it was a truly dominating performance by the 19-year-old. He only continued to progress late in the season and ended up being one of the best players. His playmaking ability physical presence and his intelligence remind us of Francesco Totti only a younger version. When the Roma Legend retired he mentioned that his heir was not there but one day he’ll arrive. Nicolo Zaniolo is the heir he has certainly arrived not only at Roma but in Italian football. Justin kluivert did some magical things during his first season at the Olimpico but Nicolo Zaniolo has been the breakout star in all of Italian football he is Roma’s Young Player of the Year. A player that will be part of the future of this club in years to come. A player capable of leading Roma to a league title he will only grow into the Superstar we all know he’s capable of becoming it was a sensational debut season for the teenager.
Manager Ratings: Eusebio DiFrancesco (5), Claudio Raneri (8)
Roma went through two managers this season Eusebio di Francesco and Claudio Ranieri. The performance of the team this season may be contributed to the decisions made by James Pallotta in the summer to sell certain players and not adequately replace them. But none the less this I give Eusebio DeFrancesco a 5. I thought he did an incredible job in his first season in his second season it just wasn’t the same they didn’t have the momentum or the confidence to take them through a Champions League level season. I’m not sure he deserved to get the sack he made his fair share of mistakes but nonetheless, he wasn’t completely to blame I thought he did as well enough as he could have given a better situation. However, at one point there was a broken spirit within the locker room and when that happens they were forced to make that decision. It was very hurtful an emotional when that happens because DiFrancesco is one of us a true Romanista. However, ultimately it turned out to be the right decision. Claudio Ranieri took over for him I give him an 8. He was given an enormously complicated job of getting Roma into the Champions League. He was unable to do that but he took over a sinking ship and he guided a ship to a little more consistency. Roma ended the year with a seven-game unbeaten run. Even though Claudio Ranieri had his fair share of problems he got Roma into Europe even though they will have to qualify for the Europa League prior to his hiring it was possible that Roma was going to miss out on year up altogether and that is something that is never going to be acceptable. Once again he did the very best job he could to get Roma into Champions League the only made mistakes in one game. It was a very troubling situation for both of these managers and I don’t think either is truly at fault. The chaos came from the top they were handed something that they could only do so much with.
