Roma’s busy summer only continue this week. Last week we talked about the sales of Kostas Manolas to Napoli and Stephan El Shaarawy to China as well as the pending departure of Edin Dzeko to Inter Milan. There’s been a lot of outgoing pieces so far this summer hopefully that won’t continue as we get into the busiest part of the transfer window. So far this season Pablo Fonseca and a newly appointed sporting director Gianluca Petrachi has been working together to try to build the best team possible for Roma. Roma has already pulled off deals for Leonardo Spinazzola from Juventus which was a swap deal that included Luca Pellegrini. As well as agreeing on a transfer for Napoli youngster Adamu Diawara. Ever since Gianluca Petrachi has arrived in Rome he has been in talks and negotiations with several different targets as he continues to build this team up in the best way possible. About 72 hours ago Roma secured an incredibly important signing for the next term. One of Roma’s biggest objectives this summer was finding a goalkeeper that can lead Roma into the future. After a disastrous campaign by Robin Olsen who is likely to be sold this summer Roma needed a more proven commodity to take the reins in goal for the Romans. For week’s Roma has been in Constant Contact with Real Betis. As Gianluca Petrachi has interest in both Pau Lopez and Marc Bartra. Lopez was Roma’s #1 target for the vacant goalkeeping position. He has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga. He has proven that on a regular basis over the last several seasons. Previously having played for Espanyol and now Bettis over the last few seasons he has developed into incredible young vibrant goalkeeper who’s capable of developing into one of the best. Negotiations started getting underway weeks ago before both sides eventually agreed on a deal. Initially, Roma was trying to get the deal done for under 20 million with addition to the Antonio Sabrina future sales clause causing Bettis to receive an extra 7 million if they sell him down the road. It was a hard bargain as both sides went back and forth with offers. Eventually, the dust settled as the sides agreed on a 23.5 million deal. Pau Lopez about a week ago already agreed on terms on a five-year deal. The deal reached completions just a few days ago as the Spanish goalkeeper flew to Rome on Monday to undergo a medical before the deal reached completion. He was meet at the airport by Roma supporters and met with Roma personnel. He becomes the most expensive goalkeeper in club history. Widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe and one of the best in La Liga Roma finally signs a worthy heir of Allison. From all accounts it appears in goal Roma will be in good hands. He was elated to join the club saying it was impossible to say no when Roma called. This fills a massive hole and a very important need this Roma team is starting to come together. An incredibly important deal that Roma just couldn’t let’s slip. Gianluca Petrachi makes another quality signing as the summer continues.
“Joining Roma is another step up for me,”
“I think it is the perfect time to take on this kind of opportunity.
“I feel ready to be the goalkeeper for Roma and I’m really happy to be here at such an historic club. It means a lot that they have faith in me and I’m delighted to be here.” He added: “As I’ve said, it’s almost impossible to turn down a club like Roma. It’s a great move for me after I enjoyed a very good year at Betis.
“I think it’s the perfect time to move to Roma. Italian football is known for the fantastic fans here. The fans are really passionate about football and love the game.
“There are some huge clubs here which make it a top-quality league. There are lots of big clubs here, including Roma, so I’m delighted to be able to experience playing in Italy.”
Pau Lopez developed in Spain into one of the best young goalkeepers in the world. The 24-year-old makes his move to Roma for the next step in his career. He started his youth career with Girona when he was just seven years old. He spent five years in his hometown Club before being picked up by a slightly bigger Youth Academy as he joined Espanyol when he was just 13 years old he continued to grow and develop into a more refined keeper. He spent six years in the Youth Academy before eventually being promoted signing his first professional contract. However, despite that, he still wasn’t ready yet he was the starter for Espanyol B playing in the youth division in Spain which is a league conducted by La Liga for some of the young players who do not have the opportunities in La Liga just yet. He was starting goalkeeper played 33 games as he guided Espanyol B to an eighth-place finish. The following year in the 2014-2015 season he was called up to the senior team, for the most part, was just a reserve as he was utilized as the club’s backup keeper. He made his La Liga debut that season In February Kirko Castilla Espanyol starting goalkeeper was sent off. The young Lopez got his first taste of Spanish football he made 10 appearances That season only two in the league meanwhile being the starter in the Spanish cup. The next year he was promoted as Espanyol number one goalkeeper after Kiko’s Castilla left for Real Madrid. In his first season, he developed into a really special keeper with untapped potential as they finished 10th in the league That season. However despite a strong campaign the following year he was loaned out to Tottenham Hotspur. He didn’t make a single appearance but he backed up Hugo Lloris while developing his game slightly more so when he returned he would be a finished product. In his second year as Espanyol starter, he was ranked fifth in the Zamora trophy which is awarded to the goalkeepers with the lowest goals-to-games ratio he ranked 5th with a 1.11 rating as well as leading his team to another mid-table finish finishing 11th in the league. At that point in time, he was widely considered as one of the better goalkeepers in the league. His young grit and determination he was proving his abilities on a regular basis. His contract ultimately expired as Espanyol didn’t renew his deal as Real Betis signed him on the FREE. This last season he was one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga leading Bettis to a 10th Place finish. He showed incredible progress and abilities for such a young keeper no surprise that Roma came in for him he was the very best they could have got in their price range. He made over a 100 appearances in La Liga he has experience on top of youth he consistently had proven his abilities it was only right that he is rewarded with bigger Club in a step up in his career.
Last season’s Roma sold Alisson Becker to Liverpool for 75 million. The Brazilian was coming off of the greatest goalkeeping season ever seen in the Roma shirt. He followed that up winning the Copa America with Brazil in Champions League Liverpool last year. It was always going to be someone incredibly difficult to replace. Roma got fooled during the World Cup in Russia. Time and time again in that tournament we saw Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen perform at the highest level. At the time it seemed like he would be an ideal replacement for the Brazilian. That notion blew up in Roma’s face. Even though he had moments of Brilliance early in the season. He couldn’t maintain it struggled with the language and communication and because of it had an absolute shocking season. Roma only paid 8.5 million for him and the best club he ever played for prior to Roma was Copenhagen. Robin Olsen is a decent keeper but he was a level below the standards. Roma’s defense and goalkeeping last season was absolutely shocking and eventually, he lost his job to Antonio Mirante and 36year old outperformed him. During the summer there was no question about it that this was one of Roma’s highest priorities. I’m not sure if Robin Olsen will stay as a backup or leave for cheap but he just was not good enough last season. Roma showed that intelligence during the transfer market this year forking out over 20 million for a goalkeeper. The most they have spent on a goalkeeper in club history. Pau Lopez has made 100 appearances in La Liga and was gained the reputation of one of the best goalkeepers in Spain. He has tremendous ability and he’s just 24 years old not only that he fits Paulo Fonseca’s system like a glove. The young goalkeeper is excited to work with the Portuguese tactician and I am almost certain Fonseca is excited to have him on his team. He will be the number one goalkeeper for Roma next season and I believe defensively because of his signing they will drastically improve. Foncesa’s Preferred tactical approach is to lead from the back to orchestrate attacking football. The style of football plays into Lopez strengths. He’s incredibly great with communication excellent with the ball at his feet which is really important and attacking style football of a Fonseca. Incredibly accurate with his passes has a lot of power in his leg and is capable of supplying counter attacks from box to box. Not only that he has experience playing at the top level against the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo not to mention he’s a younger player with the experience he has all the tools to truly flourish for Roma. This is one of the best decisions Roma made this summer I don’t know who else will arrive this year but this will be one of the best signings in Italian football. I believe we will see a tremendous Improvement defensively. The way he plays will offer a lot of different styles and scenarios that will play into Fonseca strategies. He is always ready and aware to try to find Open Spaces to create an advantage that he might give his team. He’s an incredibly smart player that can infiltrate the opposing attack keeping them unbalanced. That’s not even to mention his high level of awareness which is something that Robin Olsen really lacked last season. Roma is getting exactly what they need next season in this player. Beyond that, he gets the ball out quick which allows Fonseca’s football to flourish in the attack. Incredibly great at body positioning with the ability to stretch out and grab shots are fired in his Direction. He rarely spilled anything which will be a big deal next season. Pau Lopez has all the intangibles ability intelligence and the football mechanic to be an incredible goalkeeper for Roma. By all looks, it seems like they’ve gotten the goalkeeper of the future he smashes the goalkeeper transfer record for Roma for good reason he will be worth it in the end. This signing was a no-brainer he is already joined his teammates in pre-season training as Roma gets ready for the upcoming season but this was incredibly important that Roma got this deal done.
