The new season is officially back as Serie A kicked off on Saturday and blessed us with some exciting football. Following Udin shocking AC Milan with a 1-0 victory at home, we move it to the capital city. As Roma welcome Genoa to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as we are prepared for the season opener. There have been a lot of changes at Roma No Daniele de Rossi no Francesco Totti new manager and a ton of new players. The Paulo Fonseca era begins in Rome in a Sunday night clash in the heart of Italy. It was an absolutely thrilling contest from the very first kick of the ball. An all-out attack from both teams it was truly an enticing matchup. Roma struck early on the attack with Cengiz Under delivering some of that Turkish magic to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Genoa eventually struck back as Andrea Pinamonti scored on the counter-attack to equalize. Roma got back in front with a display of magic some Edin Dzeko scoring an absolute world-class goal ridiculous difficulty to give Roma the 2-1 lead. Right before halftime, Genoa got back and it again after an error by Juan Jesus as Genoa were given a penalty. Criscito equalized from the spot. Early in the second half Alex Kolarov scored a rocket accurately scoring a free-kick to give Roma the 3-2 lead even though Roma were so ferocious with their attack. After another defensive mishap, Genoa came back with Christian Kouamé diving header to bring Genoa back for the third consecutive time. It ended up being a 3-3 draw as points were split at the Stadio Olimpico. A lot of positives can be taken from what will be a ferocious attack the seasons but the defense needs to be sorted out before the Derby next weekend. Despite that, it was an encouraging performance in what was a thriller in Rome.

In his debut as Roma manager Pablo Fonseca set up his team out of the 4-2-3-1 formation In goal for Roma would be a new signing Spain international Pau Lopez. Roma’s backline which featured some familiar faces from last season. At left-back would be the Serbian sniper Alex Kolarov, beside him would be the center-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Juan Jesus then it occupying the right-back would be Roma Captain Alessandro Florenzi. Fonseca opted for a more experienced backline to start the season. In the defensive Midfield, we would see a very familiar pair with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Bryan Cristante. In Roma’s attacking Midfield would be a trio of young and explosive Talent. In the central position would be Nicolo Zaniolo the breakout star in Italian football last season. On the right-wing would be the Turkish Superstar Cengiz Under. Then on the opposite side controlling the left-wing would be Justin kluivert who comes in to start over Diego Perotti. Then upfront as the main Striker would be Edin Dzeko who looks to add to his historical Goal tally at Roma. Then as always a strong bench with the likes of Gianluca Mancini, Jordan Veretout and Diawara.

It has been an incredibly long time since we last saw Italian football it was finally back. After all the preparations and predictions regarding the match was about to get underway in Rome on Sunday night as they hosted a Genoa a who has a significantly improved in a lot of areas it turned out to be an absolute thriller. Early in the game, you could tell Fonseca’s impact with attacking mentality from the very beginning. A good portion of the beginning of the game Roma controlled possession and had exceptional success attacking the football using the wing and playing it through the Midfield. It did not take very long for Roma to make a stamp on the game very early. Cengiz Under after having an early chance took advantage within minutes. In the 6th minute, the Turkish star took advantage of the opportunity. He drove the ball from the right-wing then cut into the box dribbled around Genoa Defenders before drilling the ball and the top right corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead.

Cengiz Under Subline strike gives Roma the lead inside 10 Minutes

On the play, you could see the effectiveness of Under in this attacking style as he gets underneath the ball using his speed and pace to get into the right position before executing with that very dangerous left foot. This is going to be a breakout season for under and you see a display of that very early. Roma had main control over the game as well as the possession but occasionally Genoa looked dangerous. In the 16 minute, the match drew even. A defensive mishap allowed a headed pass from Christian Romero to find the boots of Andrea Pinamonti who fired it into the top of the net to equalize. After 20 minutes we had already had two goals. Roma, we’re creating a lot of opportunities especially through the Midfield and the speed they had out wide. Even though Genoa had their chances Roma seem to have control throughout the first half. Roma was coming after seeing Edin Dzeko miss wide and then Alessandro Florenzi struck the ball coming off a corner that was a brilliantly dealt with by Radu. Genoa was doing a good job protecting the middle of the box but Roma kept chipping away. Despite how well they were protecting the dangerous part of the pitch Edin Dzeko had other ideas in what was a truly unreal sequence. In the 30th minute, Bryan Cristante sent in a perfect ball as Edin Dzeko stop the ball at his feet. Edin Dzeko faked a pass before cutting inside using speed and ball skills to dribble around Defenders inside where he was surrounded by the Genoa defense he made one more move before sliding the ball into the bottom corner while falling down in the process. An outrageous strike and goal by Edin Dzeko. It would be his 88th goal in the Roma shirt taking him to 7th all time. One of the best goals we will see this season but the pass from Bryan Cristante was absolutely exquisite perfect vision and placement for Edin Dzeko to give Roma they to a 2-1 lead. Edin Dzeko attempted a shot moments later that nearly missed. Genoa just moments before half-time Roma made another mistake Juan Jesus took out Andrea Pinamonti down In the box the as a penalty was given immediately. Criscito hit it with pace Lopez got a hand to it but it ended up in the back of the net to equalize to 2-2. After a thrilling four-goal performance the whistle blew for halftime

Edin Dzeko gives Roma the temporary lead as he becomes the 7th Highest Scorer in Club history.

A very effective first half from Roma with that Relentless attack but defensively struggled. If Roma wanted to win this game they needed to fix it. Roma retook the lead immediately. In the 49th minute Alex Kolarov drilled a free-kick right underneath the post as the ball crossed the line before bouncing out the goal was given. It was his first goal against Genoa in a decade with another spectacular free kick to add it to the collection as Roma take the 3-2 lead. It seemed like Roma was going to pull away at least then. Roma had control of the game Genoa had their moments but it was in their area for the most of the time. Justin kluivert had a great chance from distance shortly after but Radu was able to deny him. Justin kluivert came close just a few minutes after narrowly missing. It just kept coming as Cengiz Under setup Edin Dzeko who was denied by Radu in what was a spectacular saved by the Romanian. It could have been good night Genoa. Genoa wasn’t creating very many chances but when they were it seemed they were taking advantage of it. Gianluca Mancini made his Roma debut coming in for Juan Jesus. However within minutes Genoa broke through. In the 70th minute Christian Kouamé scored on a diving header after being completely unmarked making it 3 to 3. A incredible match of football. Roma defensibly need to address the elephant in the room as yet again a defense of error cost them. Late in the game Roma made two changes as Javier Pastore replaced Justin kluivert who had a very productive match. Also Davie Zappacosta came in for Alessandro Florenzi. Roma continue to push and looked for that winner and they nearly got it a couple of times. In the 86th minute Edin Dzeko set up David Zappacosta perfectly unfortunately despite looking good on his debut he was unable to connect with the ball had he made connection Roma probably would have won the game. In closing moments as time was running out. A late strike from Bryan Cristante missed the Roma midfielder exploded with Fury after the ball clearly touched off a Genoa defender which would have given them one last chance to score a winner. Time ran out as Roma and Genoa split the points in a 3-3 thriller in Rome. Positive performance from the incredible attack but defensive adjustments will be required going forward.

Kolarov From the Freekick You know exactly what you get as the Serbian sniper Delivered the goods.

The Paulo Fonseca era in Rome officially begin in what was a dramatic 3-3 draw with Genoa. Roma took the lead on three different occasions at many points in this game it just looks like Roma were going to take advantage and leave with three points. However their attack was acid fire that’s how dangerous they looked coming forward. From the Midfield to the wings Striker they seem to be on the same page in the attack and controlled the match for the majority of it. The defense was the issue despite the results there are more positive then there were negative but they need to be mentioned. If Roma finds a way to deal with the defense and improve on it this team can be incredibly strong this upcoming campaign. You could see it early almost immediately it seems like Under is going to be effective in this style of football. There was a lot a productive communication between the Midfield and the attack the way they were coming forward they were incredibly dangerous. They had a large part of The Possession and found their way into dangerous areas consistently. Unfortunately their defense could not hold up. I can’t say this is a good result given the fact that Roma were winning this game on three different occasions but the sky isn’t falling either. This is the first game of the season and there were a lot of positives and things that we can look at as improvement from last season. Roma have the Derby upcoming that is going to be a hugely important game because it is the only challenging game they have over the next few weeks. This Derby means so much this club and Roma wants to get revenge on Lazio after Lazio crushed them in their last meeting. This is a different type of Roma even in the results you just felt Roma we’re going to continue to get back into the game and score goals the attack was incredibly effective and the players Orchestrated the attack well. Nicolo Zaniolo Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini in the Midfield did exceptional and Justin kluivert I thought was productive in his position and looks to have grown since last season. Alex Kolarov showed age is just a number with a thrilling Freekick. Under was incredibly special as well but tonight the man of the match Goes to Edin Dzeko. He put in a performance to remember. It’s not just because he scored the goal it’s the impact he has on the game when the ball is at his feet he is one of the best passing Strikers in all of Europe he displayed that regularly tonight and showed to be a leader on the pitch. He was incredibly impactful throughout and the goal he scored I’m still trying to figure out how he did it. Being surrounded by so many Defenders him having the speed to get into the right position to score is outrageous. It is very frustrating that Roma was unable to win this game but if Roma are able to replicate the attack and improve the defense there’s no doubt in my mind they win the Derby because they have the better team if they lose it will be because they beat themselves and Pablo Fonseca will not allow that to happen. It wasn’t the result we hoped for but Pablo Foncesa’s football and philosophy has certainly shown its potential with an inspiring performance despite the results.
