An Afternoon of Derby misfortune as points are spared at the Stadio Olimpico #615

A.S Roma 1 S.S Lazio 1FT

Following a hectic and exciting 3-3 draw at home against Genoa. Roma would prepare for one of the biggest matches of their season. As we would see another edition of one of football’s most violent and passionate derbies. The Derby Della Capitale as Roma and Lazio prepared to throw down in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico. They split the season series last season with both teams being able to handle each other in each of the meetings. Roma has for much of the time dominated this fixture but it has become vastly more competitive in the last couple of years as the Roman sides have split the season series in two of the last three seasons. Last week Lazio beat a hopeless Sampdoria side 3-0 to set up anticipation and excitement ahead of the derby. On Sunday afternoon we saw a derby that included drama physical play fan interactions and more it turned out to be a classic Derby in Rome. Lazio was probably the better team throughout the match but there were times in which it felt more balanced than the stats suggest. Despite Lazio having early control, it was Roma who would strike first. Following a very obvious handball, Roma was given a penalty. Former Lazio player Alex Kolarov struck from the spot in what was a near-perfect penalty giving Roma the 1-0 lead. They managed to hold on to it through the first half but it wasn’t without drama non-stop attack from both teams. A half of misfortune as Lazio and Roma both hit the crossbar repeatedly in the first half. In the second half, it only intensified. Lazio still had a slight edge in performance but failed to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Roma even though at times Lazio dominated they had moments in the Paulo Fonseca attack where they could have nearly broken through. Despite a superb performance from Pau Lopez Lazio broke through with Luis Alberto to equalize. It was an absolute battle for 90 minutes but we couldn’t find a winner despite many chances that Lazio created they just couldn’t break through as points are spared in the Roman Derby as we head for the international break. Just two points for Roma is not the ideal start to the season but it’s very early with an opportunity over the next several weeks to get significant points as they play a weak schedule over the next month. A winner isn’t crowned in the Roman Derby.

Roma manager Paulo Fonseca operated out of the 4-2-3-1 formation once again. It was a very similar Roma team. Only one change taking place from the draw last week. In a goal for Roma would be the Spaniard Pau Lopez. In front of him would be the Roma backline left-back would be at the Serbian sniper Alex Kolarov, beside him would be the center-back partnership of Gianluca Mancini getting his first start since his move to Roma and Federico Fazio. Then as always at right-back would be Roma Captain Alessandro Florenzi. We would see the same defensive Midfield pair of Lorenzo Pellegrini and Bryan cristante they did quite well last week. No change in the attacking Trio either in the central position would be Nicolo zaniolo on the right-wing would be the Turkish Speedster Cengiz Under. Then patrolling the opposite side on the right-wing would be Justin kluivert. Then as always as the main Striker would be edin Dzeko As always a relatively strong bench with lots of options if Roma needed to make adjustments.

After preparations and predictions, the match was just about to take off in Rome. Both sets of fans entered the with optimism and confidence. One of the most important Derby in all of Europe kicked off as the entire city shut down for this very matchup. Lazio came out firing in the early moments of the game. They nearly scored in the opening minutes. As Lucas Leiva struck from outside the box hitting the post. It was somewhat of an unsettling start for Roma. Lazio came out with that energy coming off an easy win against Sampdoria they came to play. The assaults only continue as Ciro Immobile missed before milinkovic-savic tried to get one past Pau Lopez. However, the Spanish goalkeeper denied him making a great save. Minutes later Bryan cristante tried to strike for Roma just narrowly missing in what was a good attempt on goal. Bryan cristante is one of the most underrated players on the squad and again shows that quality. Luis Alberto tried to reply striking from distance a vicious effort but missing the target. Then in the 18th minutes, the game finally broke open despite the fact that Lazio we’re significantly the better team up to that point it was Roma who broke through. Roma was given a penalty as it showed a handball in the Box. No complaints by anyone as it was one of the few clear penalties we have had this season. Alex Kolarov stepped up. The Serbian connected on a beautifully hit penalty striking the ball in it to the top left corner giving Thomas sikorska no chance. As Roma pulled in front giving Roma the 1-0 lead. Scoring his second goal of the season. Roma tried to double it a few minutes later as Edin Dzeko set up Cengiz under for a strike that’s fired wide really don’t mind the shot we have seen him score from outrageous distances. After Roma scored their goal Lazio went berserk. Immobile hit the post connecting on a headed pass from milinkovic this was a pretty atrocious finish there’s no question Lazio should have equalized. A minute later Luis Alberto was denied Again by Lopez. However, they kept coming as Correa struck the post from inside the box. In what was a very lucky break for Roma. A few minutes later Nicolo zaniolo nearly broke through for Roma. The young star cut just outside the Box cracking a shot on goal that dings the bottom post in what looked like it would have been a sure goal. True Madness in the derby late in the first half Roma had a momentous opportunity coming off a corner in the box with multiple headers nearly finding the back of the net before it was cleared out. An incredible enticing and passionate first half came to a close what the Romans leading 1-0 thanks to an Alex Kolarov penalty.

Kolarov’s buries Penalty to give Roma first half lead.

It was a really strong first half from Lazio despite that Roma had their chances and got themselves in front with a penalty. However, the blue side of Rome certainly looked like they had the momentum and control. Nicolo zaniolo kicked off the second half with a strike from deep misfiring. Lucas strike on goal but Pau Lopez made another tremendous save as he was having a pretty solid performance. However, Lazio was knocking on the door and eventually they were going to break through you could just feel it. That moment arrived in the 59th minute. Immobile set up Luis Alberto as he fired the ball into the top corner as Lazio equalized in the derby making 1-1. Lazio still in control what Roma weren’t backing down as they fought for the team. Nicolo zaniolo came very close on a counter-attack in which he caused multiple Lazio Defenders to fall on their backs but lost energy, in the end, failing to connect on a shot from close range. Shortly after Alex Kolarov came close on a thunderous free-kick but it remained even. Correa responded with a strike from inside the box but Lopez got to it. Paulo Fonseca made his first change of the evening bringing in Javier Pastore for Cengiz Under who did not have his best game. It continued to go back and forth with no team really being able to pull away. With just four minutes to go Lazio nearly scored the winner as Marco Parolo hit the bar as the crossbar gets attention for a 10th time denying Lazio of what would be the winner. With just a few minutes to ago Diawara made his Roma debut coming in for Alessandro florenzi. Both teams tried to put together a few last attacks but it would end in a point split in the Roman Derby with a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico. A match of Madness intensity and passion adds with some misfortune as we saw a classic Derby in Rome.

It was in a lot of ways a classic Derby. A lot of chances wasted a lot of drama throughout the match and no Advantage at the end from either team. Lazio outplayed Roma, I don’t think there’s a way you can make the other argument. However, they only have themselves to blame for not being able to secure the three points. 6 shot hit the crossbar in the derby four of them came from Lazio. Some of it was dumb luck and others were completely avoidable. When you hit the crossbar four times in one game what is it telling me is you didn’t convert your chances. Don’t get me wrong Roma in a lot of ways have to feel lucky to have gotten a point they were not the better team today. They had so many opportunities to win this game and even though Pau Lopez looked really strong and goal today they had so many opportunities to put it away. Roma took the early lead on the penalty by Alex Kolarov a former Lazio player who came to Roma 2 years ago and has scored in the derby twice. He could not have taken his penalty any better it was perfectly put in the back of the net. Lazio on that counter-attack was deadly even playing from behind but nonetheless, Roma had moments. This is a relatively new team Paulo Fonseca has only had a limited amount of time with the players he has. Considering everything Roma has to be happy about the performance it could have been a lot better but they made progression. Defensively it still was a mess but even so, there were moments where they had strong defensive moments that kept them in the game. It certainly is a work in progress but they have made some strides today. This is a game that can learn a lot from, especially the fact that they were outplayed by their rival. 2 points out of a possible 6 to start the season can be tough but despite that, they had a rather difficult matchup over the first two games. Even when Lazio equalized I thought they did a good job of holding on to it there are a lot of ways in which they needed to improve and in due time they will progress. Even though they were the second-best team today their attack still looked very dangerous and there were multiple they were just inches of scoring. it’s not perfect Roman need another Winger or at least a better performance from the outside they cut through the middle tonight the outside Wing underperformed a little bit. Justin kluivert is going to get a lot of criticism tonight but I still see the potential to be a superstar in this league and I think he did a lot of things really well tonight. He’s going to continue to improve through each Match maybe not now but he will prove his worth on this team. I would still keep him as the starter on the left-wing. the man-of-the-match tonight for Roma was Nicolo Zaniolo and I’m not sure it’s that close he showed to be spark plugs through the center of the pitch and got stuck in. On so many occasions he was an orchestrator of the counter-attack. he played incredibly strong off the ball and Lazio Defenders simply could not handle him it was an outstanding performance even though he didn’t score the impact he had on the game was clear he will only continue to develop he hasn’t even hit the iceberg of what he can achieve inside this Roma team it was an outstanding performance even if Roma collectively we’re slightly disappointed. Next week we have the international break and can start getting things on the right track with several games against teams at the bottom of the table. Roma will learn from this game and improved going forward.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Nicolo Zaniolo
