Roma 4 Sassuolo 2FT
Following the International break, Roma got right back to business against Sassuolo. Roma opens their season with two very tough matches getting draws against Lazio in the derby and at home against Genoa in the opener of the season. There was a certain amount of pressure to deliver in a game that felt almost like a must-win last season against the Sassuolo they won the series winning 3-1 at home and suffering a 0-0 draw late in the season that ruined any chance they had at Champions League football. It was a matchup that favored Roma extensively as they have had a great amount of success against Sassuolo. Sassuolo we’re also coming into this game with some confidence having beaten Sampdoria 4-1 last time out. Paulo Fonseca was looking for his first victory of the season as Roma manager and he would get it in an offensive fueled first half. In the opening 45 minutes, Roma displayed quality control and dominance in what was a display of the best football they have played in ages. It started early as Bryan Cristante scored on a corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. The Romans would add to it shortly after as Edin Dzeko found the back of the net to double their lead. They were only getting warmed up they were using all the anger they had on Sassuolo. Hendrix Mkhitaryan and Justin kluivert added to the goal-scoring feast. Roma found themselves with a four-goal Advantage after the opening 45 minutes with a 4-0 lead at halftime with Lorenzo Pellegrini getting a hat-trick of assists. In the second half, Roma’s offense continued as Roma nearly scored on multiple other occasions including hitting the crossbar twice. Sassuolo eventually found their way back into the game with a brilliant free-kick from Berardi making it 4-1 Berardi found the back of the net for a second time after some defensive issues from Roma in what ultimately led to a 4-2 to victory for the Romans. Despite the slight breakdown in the second half, it was an offensive explosion from Roma something that will certainly give them confidence and momentum going into the Europa League this week as Paulo Fonseca gets his first win.
Paulo Fonseca came out of there customary formation in the 4-2-3-1. There were many similarities from the way the team looked in the Derby last time out. With a few adjustments along the way. In goal would be the Spaniard Paul Lopez. The backline would be identical to the one we saw against Lazio. In at left-back would be Alex Kolarov, beside him would be the center-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Gianluca Mancini then as always patrolling right-back would be Roma Captain Alessandro Florenzi. In the defensive Midfield would be Bryan Cristante and making his debut playing alongside him would be Jordan Veretout. Lorenzo Pellegrini would push-up into the central Midfield. On the left-wing would be Justin Kluivert who has progressed immensely so far this season. Then on the opposite side on the right way in making his Roma debut would be Hendrix Mkhitaryan who recently arrived from Arsenal. Then upfront as the main Striker would be Edin Dzeko. Roma would come out with a strong bench with the likes of Nicolo Zaniolo, and Leonardo Spinazzola.
Following a week without football, we returned to the capital on a Sunday afternoon. After preparations and predictions, the match was just about to kick-off in Rome. As Roma hosted the Sassuolo. It was a thrilling and exciting afternoon in Rome and drama came through in the opening moments. On a counter-attack, Justin kluivert cut through inside the box where he was taken down in what was a strong tackle. It initially was a penalty called what after looking at the VAR it was clear that it wasn’t a penalty. It took a chunk off the clock in what seemed like an obvious decision. However, it looked like Roma was in control as they had possession in their favor and they looked like they were going to break on several occasions. Edin Dzeko from outside the box dribbled around his Defender before striking it into the top corner where it was saved. A tremendous save in what looked like it was going to be a sure goal. On that very corner kick, the game broke open. In 12 minute Lorenzo Pellegrini delivered a perfect ball inside the ball as Bryan Cristante rose up putting his head through the cross placing it in the back of the net to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Excellent pass by Pellegrini the delivery & execution was perfect. Bryan Cristante has played tremendously well this season he only continues to show why he should be a starter on this Roma team. Roma continued to get on the counter-attack they were absolutely was antagonizing. Justin kluivert Edin Dzeko and Hendrix Mkhitaryan the way that came forward was just so incredibly dangerous. Not to mention these supplies from the Midfield coming from Lorenzo Pellegrini who was just on another level. Roma doubled their lead in the 19th minute on a counter-attack fueled by Lorenzo Pellegrini he found Alex Kolarov near the Box on the wing Kolarov put it perfectly to Edin Dzeko who struck the ball at the goalkeeper who did not adjust yet forcing the ball into the back of the net to give Roma the 2-0 lead.
Bryan Cristane & Edin Dzeko get things off to a Roaring start for Roma
Ruthless Roma only continued control as they converted their very next chance they found the back of the net yet again. Lorenzo Pellegrini orchestrated another counter-attack sliding the ball into the box for Hendrick Mkhitaryan he slid the ball into the bottom corner scoring a debut goal after being in an unwanted situation it seems he has found a role in this offense. Roma seemed to be in cruise control only continuing to dominate the run of play. In the 22nd minute, they were in for a fourth time a little later. In the 33rd minute Lorenzo Pellegrini set up a perfect counter-attacking situation for Justin kluivert who essentially had a one-on-one with space the young Dutch star displayed Poised and execution much like his father did when he played. Justin kluivert cut through used speed and pace with a calmness to slip the ball underneath the goalkeeper as he was coming out into the back of the net to score a tremendous goal to make it 4-0. Justin kluivert has massively improved this season Paulo Fonseca has given him an opportunity that he did not have last season. He should be starting most games he has shown his worse especially with that strike of calmness and explosive play. Roma continued to dominate the game and get themselves in a great position to score on a numerous of occasions. The counter-attack continued to look absolutely lethal. Sassuolo quite honestly in that 45 minutes couldn’t handle anything Roma was throwing at them they had a little to no impact in the opening 45 minutes and found themselves down by four. After the first half Roma had a 4-0 lead thanks to Justin kluivert Edin Dzeko Hendrick Mkhitaryan and Bryan Cristante.
Hendrick Mkhitaryan& Justin Kluivert continued to add on a 4-0 first half.
It was a half of absolute perfection. You could make an argument that that was the best 45 minutes of football Roma have played in years. It was absolutely perfect it surely is an insurmountable lead however Sassuolo we’re going to find a way back in you could just tell. Just a few minutes into the second half Roma had to deal with some misfortune yet again. Alessandro Florenzi connected with Edin Dzeko on the cross. The Bosnians header clanged off the crossbar before coming out to the feet of Justin kluivert who ripped a shot but was saved. Quite honestly that should have been the fifth goal for Roma. Just a few minutes later Justin kluivert came through on the counter but was denied by The Keeper. However, Sassuolo would get one back in the 53rd minute. Berardi’s hit a stunning free-kick that was out of this world to minimize the deficit. The game became a lot more balanced throughout the second half. Roma was later denied A Stonewall penalty. Edin Dzeko was suffocated in the Box in what was a clear penalty. There was no VAR check which was an egregious decision given the fact that they had previously checked a penalty in the opening few minutes that didn’t even look like a penalty. Roma would make their first change of the afternoon as Nicolo Zaniolo came in for Justin kluivert who had a fantastic performance. Later in the 72nd minute, Berardi scored again as he is now the highest-scoring player in the league this season. He has had an incredibly hot start to the season I do not think it will last but he is informed. It was slightly concerning given the fact that Roma had a four-goal lead and Sassuolo cut it in half a 4-2 game against all odds. Win or lose this season the defense will be held responsible. Roma would immediately make their second change of the afternoon with Leonardo Spinazzola making his Roma debut coming in for Alex Kolarov. With less than 10 minutes ago Edin Dzeko got denied in what was a late chance to extend it even further. Sassuolo pushed in the closing minutes of the game but couldn’t come back after being entirely dominated early in this match. Roma holds on in a wild and goal infested 4-2 win as Roma taste victory so the first time this season taking them to Five Points from their opening three games. Maybe not what they wanted to see but Paulo Fonseca side is capable of anything this season and that display tonight further proof.
Its all smiles at the Olimpico following Roma’s first victory
In a match that felt like was a must-win Roma delivered in the fullest way. Roma only had two points over the opening two fixtures before the International break it wasn’t an ideal situation even though Roma were given a very tough opening two fixtures everyone around the club wanted a little bit more. Roma could have picked up the three points so to a certain extent it was a frustrating start. Which is why there was so much importance on this game it is early in the season but if you go winless and your opening 3 and your club like Roma it would be nearly time to panic that’s how I felt there was a certain level of pressure to get that first win. Roma could not have played any better in the opening 45 minutes it was an offensive explosion. Paulo Fonseca football is the most enjoyable brand to be seen at the Olimpico in a very long time. Not only is it attractive it is effective. Pablo Fonseca Beat Pep Guardiola is Manchester City and Maurizio Sarri Napoli. He is a manager that plays such attacking football that you can suffocate the opponent. After the first half Sassuolo looked lost confused and disoriented. Roma came forward in such an aggressive way it was hard to even imagine. After an early penalty that wasn’t given to Roma they hit back immediately through Bryan Cristante, Edin Dzeko, Hendrix Mkhitaryan then Justin Kluivert. Goals were just flying into the back of the net and quite honestly Roma could have scored much more. Despite some defensive deficiencies that still exist this team played with an Unreal kind of confidence and momentum picked up every time they came forward with the ball. It ended up being a 4-2 Victory as Sassuolo tried to mount a comeback. Defensively quite obviously Roma needs to handle themselves a lot better. However, you have to feel great about the performance we saw from the entire team. The attack was coming with the velocity on the counter it was incredible. Roma even hit the bar twice in the second half the score line could have been a lot wider. You got to give Sassuolo some props for getting back into the game but this was an infusion of attacking football. I’ve said this from the very beginning of the Season Roma will score a ton of goals it’s going to come down to whether they can prevent them. In this match, in particular, the attack at outweighed the defense even though there are concerning things with the defense it was an incredibly special performance. Lorenzo Pellegrini was the man-of-the-match by far with a hat-trick of assists in the first half quite honestly it might have been his greatest performance in Italian football. He was incredibly special made really intelligent passes and got his team in positions regularly. When he plays higher up in attacking positions he can be incredibly effective. He was dropping dimes every time he touched the ball it was magical. Collectively as a team Roma played really well from back to front I especially was impressed with Justin kluivert who scored his first goal of the season after having been used mainly as a sub last year the kid is a special talent and he is progressing through every match he plays this season. The defensive issues are concerning and Roma will need to address them but despite that, it was a tremendous performance from the team collectively. Paulo Fonseca gets his first wins as Roma coach and Roma rolls over sassuolo despite a goalless second-half it was an electric performance that will give the club momentum and confidence going into the Europa League mid-week. This team can be something truly special and that was on full display.
Man Of the Match: Lorenzo Pellagrini
