Roma vs Sassuolo Talking Points #626

Yesterday afternoon Roma won their first game of the Pablo Fonseca era in Rome. Coming off International break Roma we’re looking for their first win of the season. Despite having taken the leads against Genoa and Lazio they’ve only managed two points from the opening two matches. It was a match that seemed like a must-win even though it’s early in the season it could have been a cause for concern. Roma beat Sassuolo last season but a draw against them late in the year prevented them from Champions League football. The team may have been different but Roma as a club did not forget that. It was the first half of an attacking masterpiece. Early in the match, Bryan Cristante put his head through a cross coming from a corner to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Roma would double it just minutes later on the counter-attack as Lorenzo Pellegrini found Alex Kolarov who found Edin Dzeko as he stuck it into the back of the net to give Roma the 2-0 lead. They were just getting warmed up on a Counterattack just a minute later Hendrix Mkhitaryan scored his debut goal after receiving a perfectly-placed passed from Lorenzo Pellegrini scoring making it a 3-0 lead. As hard as it is to imagine they were not done Lorenzo Pellegrini orchestrated a breakaway for Justin kluivert who beat the goalkeeper to give Roma a 4-0 lead. It was a 4 goal first half. Roma played such attacking a brand of football. One of the best Roma performances we have seen in a long time. Sassuolo did get back into the game in the second half as Berardi scored an incredible free-kick and then late in the game score another following some defensive miscommunication. However Roma’s lead was insurmountable as they pick up their first win of the season in what was a dominating performance Roma even could have added more having hit the crossbar twice it was a display of incredible cruise control a true masterpiece picking up an important win that will give them momentum and confidence for Thursday’s match in the Europa League.

Attacking Masterpiece

Paulo Fonseca is changing football in Rome. Obviously, to really make an impact in the city he’s going to need to win trophies but if you look at what he has done his opening 3 games systematically and tactically it is something that Roma hasn’t seen in a very long time at the Stadio Olimpico. There is a true difference in Pablo Fonseca’s attacking football. It’s something that we have not experienced in a long time he came in with the reputation of being the incredibly smart manager with tactical brilliance. This has been one of the most explosives teams Roma have had in ages. In the opening 3 games, Roma has shown how dangerous they can be on the counter. Whether or not Roma are winning or losing games the attack will not be the problem this team will score a ton this season. They have the Personnel on the attacking mentality to scare teams with their attack. They are ruthless with their execution and have speed throughout the team as well as clinical finishing ability. It is something this team has struggled with over the last 2 years that is not going to be the problem this upcoming campaign especially coming off an incredible performance yesterday they scored four goals in 33 minutes in their win. They were just breathtaking on the counter-attack and there’s nothing Sassuolo could have done about it. With Kluivert, Dzeko, Mkhitaryan as well as Pellegrini and Kolarov the team was unstoppable it was over before it even began. The Pace throughout the squad largely attributed that they have players like Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini who have incredible vision and passing ability. In the end, it is going to come down to the defense the attack will score goals this system is a high-powered offense that will give teams problems. Yesterday was just another example of how explosive they can be it was an attacking masterpiece and we will only continue to see this as the season progresses.

Lorenzo Pellegrini’s performance for the ages

Lorenzo Pellegrini when he is on form is one of the best midfielders in Italian football. There is a certain uniqueness about him. It is not surprising that he had suitors from around Europe. He is the future of this Roma team. He’s immensely talented with an incredible skill set. A perfect player A Roman born Player that desires to stay at this club. We have seen him put together some incredible displays on quality in the Champions League in the Copa Italia against Juventus and the way he has played in some really big games. However, yesterday may have been his greatest performance. He was operating on a different level than everyone around him. His vision his passing his control throughout the entire game was an artistic display of brilliance. Furthermore, there isn’t a single player this week that was a better performer. Without question the most impressive and antagonizing performer in all of Italian football this week. Lorenzo Pellegrini is one of the future components of this club he is one of the players the club is building around because of his unbelievable quality. He is the most valuable player on this Roma team he may not be the best player but in terms of value what he brings to the game in the way he impacts it even from a distance his value is cannot be understated. Last year he had three assists in the league. Yesterday he had three assists in 33 minutes He was dropping dimes all over the place. A perfect delivery on the corner kick that led to Bryan Cristante’s goal. Exceptional pass into space dropping the ball inside the box for Mkhitaryan and his unreal accuracy and anticipation play that cut through the defense allowing Justin kluivert one of the fastest players in the league to get through into space and score a goal. It was a perfect performance even beyond the numbers the way he impacted the game got his teammates into position simply the best player in the league this week. There is a reason Lorenzo Pellegrini is a player Roma is building around his intelligence maturity and ability is off the charts he is continuing to develop into one of the best midfielders in Europe. It was a performance of true magic every time he touched the ball he got himself or teammates into scoring position Lorenzo Pellegrini is a problem and a solution at the same time

Sassuolo’s Fight back

Sassuolo was utterly annihilated in the first half. There’s nothing that could be done they couldn’t stop Romans attacking Masterpiece. The game was over there’s only so much you can say to the player after that 45 minutes. Even though the majority of the team recognized it was over they never stop fighting. They tried to find a way back in the game and they kept chipping away. Roma could have scored several more goals in the second half if it wasn’t for hitting the crossbar multiple times however Sassuolo continued to battle to make the game look more respectable. It was an abysmal performance collectively throughout the game outscoring Roma in the second half and got two goals back. Most teams would have given up and accepted defeat. It was coming regardless and I think everyone on that team realized that but regardless they kept fighting so to bring it back 4-2 after a horrible half. We have to give them a lot of credit for the way they fought. Sassuolo has the opportunity to be a really strong team this season they have a lot of good pieces in place and even though they were destroyed yesterday they showed something in the second half they never gave up. Even though they were always going to lose this game they deserve a lot of credit they did I admired the way they played in the second half.

Berardi’s Early Season consistency

Berardi attempted to bring his team back yesterday after conceding 4 goals in the first half. For the longest time, he has been one of the most inconsistent performers in Italian football. I think everyone knows and realizes how talented he is a special talent that should be better than he is. That might be harsh but it’s a truth he was expected to be the next big star and Italian football as a young Talent he was as promising as any Prospect we’ve seen. As a teenager, he scored a big number of goals in the league. He seemed like someone with an incredible future someone who’ could develop into one of the best players in Italian football. The fact of the matter is it just didn’t happen. The main reason was inconsistency it’s been the narrative around his potential for the longest time he went from being someone who scores a large number of goals to someone who will be lucky if they guess more than 10. He’s barely been featured in the Italian national team for this very reason he cannot fight that narrative. This season he’s starting to I won’t be fooled by their because we’ve seen him start the season in-form and then see it evaporate. For all of Italian football I hope he can develop into that star that we were promised many years ago. He could not have started this season much better against Sampdoria he scored a hat-trick in 14 minutes was incredibly sensational. Then yesterday he has a multiple-goal performance yet again. He tried to lead a comeback after being down by so many goals in the first half. He brought the game back to life scoring an outrageous free-kick and taking advantage of a defensive liability from Roma to score two goals. It is early in the season but it’s been really nice to see him develop that consistency that he seems to always lack. I do not think this will last but I really hope he can maintain this. He currently is a top scorer in the league with five goals will he be there at the end? It seems unlikely but he certainly has the talent to do it.

The Rise and Progression of Justin Kluivert

Justin kluivert is a super Talent his potential of what he can achieve is absolutely outrageous. It has taken him a little time for him to develop. That’s a lot of pressure on him mainly because his father is Patrick kluivert one of the best strikers of his era. None the less he made the move to Roma. It was a frustrating experience at times last season but one he certainly has not regretted. He learned a great deal last year after being used as a substitute for the most part and occasional some starts. He is still just 20 years old and has the potential of someone who could be one of the best players in the world. He chose Roma over clubs like Manchester United he believes in this project and that he can be a major component a part of it. This season he has been much more involved. You can see him already developing into one of the best young talents in Italian football. Every match he has played this season he has done something special his speed and antagonizing pace with the ball at his feet is incredible there is very little anyone can do to stop him. His talent is so blatantly obvious especially when you see him operate at the highest level. Under Paulo Fonseca, he’s been given an opportunity that he was not given previously this season he has been one of the better players on Roma. Despite that, he has dealt with a fair amount of criticism in which I defend him last week and felt it was uncalled for. His decision making still needs Improvement but the overall package and what he can do on the field just, even more, justifies that he is a future star and the future of Roma or at least he’s apart of the core that will make this team into a champion. He fits into this system like gloves he is really dangerous on the counter-attack. It’s not just because of his speed and his ability sometimes he was leading the attack yesterday as a 20-year-old kid the way he controls the ball and the matter in which he brought the ball forward on the was very impressive. He was the most explosive player on the offense Lorenzo Pellegrini may have been the best but he showed incredible ability and made the much-improved decision making. He was one of the best performers this week without question. To use his pace and athleticism to take advantage on the counter and on the break. The defense simply put could not handle him he caused them to be disoriented and couldn’t handle the Speedy youngster Justin kluivert shown his calm poise and his ability to execute scoring a great goal. He is going to be a very important part of this team this season and he should continuously get the game time he has a mentally progressed since last season. Last season he scored one league goal this year in just three games he has already scored. He could potentially be in for a double-digit goal season he certainly has a talent ability and dedication to be able to achieve that. All the criticism that was put on him last year will get quieter and quieter he is a future Superstar that believes in the Roma project that wants to be at this club to achieve the greatness that they’re capable of that was on full display we are witnessing a star in the making yesterday was a breakthrough in achieving that.
