Roma is coming into the Europa League coming off a victory that has given them some momentum and confidence to get the job done yet again in Europe. Roma beat Lecce in a 1-0 victory on Sunday thanks to a second-half goal from edin Dzeko. Meanwhile, they have lost Lorenzo Pellegrini and Hendrix Mkhitaryan to injury so there could be a shakeup with Roma Squad. Nonetheless, they head into Austria as favorites as they are set to take on Wolfsberger. A team was very limited European experience but shocked everyone when they beat Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach. The Austrian side absolutely crushes them in a 4-0 victory. Not only that they went to Germany and beat them. This is a team that may cause more problems then many people think about this competition. Meanwhile, Roma Beat Istanbul 4-0 at the Stadio Olimpico last time out at it stands these are the top two teams in the group. With that being said it is their home opener & it could be more difficult than they realize. Despite Roma’s problems they have the team the pedigree and the manager to go to Austria and beat them. They want to do whatever they can to show out in that first game. This competition is incredibly important to them and after a big first win, they have an opportunity to upset again. However with that being said Roma an attacking-minded team with talented players throughout the squad. Despite their injury concerns, they could give Austria a nightmare when these two teams throw down on Thursday night. Will the Roma show their superiority? Or is there another upset on our hands? We will find all that and more when Roma takes a trip to Austria to throw down with Wolfsberger.
Roma before this game was given some rather unsettling news the injury bug has certainly seemed to hit them again this season already with the injuries to Diego Perotti David zappacosta and Genghis under. Things have gotten a little bit worse on that front. Following Roma’s recent Victory this weekend against Lecce Lorenzo Pellegrini one of Roma’s most valuable players was forced to leave the match due to a toe injury. He had surgery last Tuesday and it is come out successful but he will be out for about 2 months. That really concerns me because the Midfield does not function at the same level when he is not there. When Lorenzo Pellegrini got injured last year Roma went on their worst form of the entire season. It is slightly concerning how Roma will adapt to this change. In addition to that Mkhitaryan will be sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring injury. This shortens up Roma Squad massively over there next few fixtures. Tomorrow night is an important game as Roma has the possibility to increase their advantage in their Europa League group. There could be a change in the formation because of the limitations Roma have in their squad because of the injuries. However, I would still stay with the 4-2-3-1 formation I think it has been a more or less effective throughout the season despite lacking some pieces inside of that formation it seems too drastic to make an adjustment. Roma will have to work around a few things. Defensively I think there will only be minor adjustments we should see more or less the same from last weekend. We should see the center-back partnership of Federico Fazio and Chris Smalling. It will give Roma a huge advantage in size as both center-backs are physically imposing. Then at left-back and right back we should see Alex Kolarov and Leonardo spinazzola. As I see Florenzi being pushed up on the wing for tomorrow’s game. In the defensive Midfield, we should see the pair of Bryan cristante and Jordan Veretout. In front of them in the attacking Midfield, We should see Nicolo zaniolo coming in for injured Lorenzo Pellegrini on the left-wing we should see a Justin kluivert who continues to progress this season. Then on the opposite side on the right-wing, we should see Alessandro florenzi who’s capable of playing that position because of the injuries that Roma do have it makes the most sense to have him going forward. Then upfront as the main Striker we should see edin Dzeko once again who is great form. Roma’s bench options are limited but they have enough depth to get them through with three points tomorrow night.
Wolfsberger typically operates out of the 4-3-1-2 formation. They did really well last week only time will tell if they can repeat such performance. In goal will be Kofler. Wolfsberger has a backline consisting of Novak, a center-back partnership of Solbauer Rnic and then at right-back Schmitz. In front of their defensive line, they have three defensive midfielders that protect a backline from counter-attacking football. In the defensive Midfield, they line up with a trio consisting of Schmid Leitgeb Ritzmaier. Then right underneath the striker at center forward would be Liendl. And as always a strike Partnership of Weissman and Niangbo. Not a lineup that’s going to scare anyone but they have capabilities in the side. Liendl will be exceptionally important this time out he was really good against the Gladbach in Germany he’s going to need to repeat that performance again if they want a realistic chance of upsetting Roma.
Every match in Europe is always one that can potentially be difficult. Last time we saw promise in this competition a few weeks back they absolutely annihilated Istanbul FC large part from a second-half display. In that game, Roma struggles to do anything in the first half that cannot happen tomorrow night. Roma must come out strong and maintain it for the majority of the match. Roma does not have the squad that had the first time around and without Lorenzo Pellegrini and Miki they will have some limitations in terms of squad depth and what they can do to attack Wolfsberger. Roma can’t underestimate Wolfsberger they beat Borussia Monchengladbach easily they absolutely dominated that match and showed exactly why they should be taken seriously. Playing this game away from home can be difficult but Roma should be able to manage the environment and secure all three points. Wolfsberger has quality players and is doing really well domestically but none the less Roma does have the better team and I’m not sure Wolfsberger has enough to overcome the Romans. I think this game will be a lot closer than most people think Wolfsberger will try to play to their absolute peak in front of the crowd. Despite that in this match, Wolfsberger just seems overmatched by Roma. There will be ugly moments in this game in which Wolfsburg can take advantage of. Even though we saw an improved defense last weekend it is their biggest issue and Wolfsberger should do whatever they can to try and exploit that. However, creating enough chances may be their biggest problem. Roma can control things in the Middle with Bryan cristante and have Pace on the outside as a striker who was in great form in edin Dzeko. If Roma is able to protect the backline from counter-attacks they should find a way through. It will be a battle that will have its challenges but in the end, Roma will find a way to get all three points in Austria.
