Roma vs Borussia Monchengladbach Europa League Match Day 3 #665

Roma are coming off several results that have not necessarily gone their way. They are not in the best moment right now after back-to-back draws against Cagliari and Sampdoria over the weekend. The biggest issue is there injuries as the lack of depth is proving to be a problem. On top of that this is a short week for Roma’s as they continue their journey in the Europa League. They will return home to the Stadio Olimpico for match day three of the Europa League. They are currently top of the group with four points from two games after beating Istanbul FC 4-0 and getting a draw with wolfsberger. Tomorrow night they will be hosting Borussia Monchengladbach which should be a tremendous challenge. The Bundesliga side doesn’t have any points so far in the Europa League but have been very formidable in the Bundesliga. It should be a tremendous match despite the fact that the German side have no points so far there isn’t a clear favor Roma might have a slight advantage because they’re at home at the Stadio Olimpico but because of the injuries that they have at this moment its an open game for anyone. A big three points will certainly signal their intent in this competition as one of the favorites meanwhile dropped points would just add it to their misery. We will find out all that and more when these two teams clash tomorrow night in Rome.

A.S Roma

Paulo Fonseca returns to the Roma bench tomorrow night after his suspension being reduced. However he has a mountain of problems on his hands as he prepares for the next couple of games. The injuries are truly becoming an epidemic as they have injuries all across the board in important positions. With the injuries to Nicola Kalinic and Bryan Cristante over the weekend Roma only have one Striker available and are left with only one defensive midfielder. This is a big problem because outside of the 4-2-3-1 formation they need two defensive midfielders to occupy that space. It is incredibly difficult to build something with so many injuries Roma have to deal with this tomorrow and going forward. The good news is Diego Perotti is fit to play after recovering from ankle surgery before the season started. He is likely to come off the bench but it’s good to know that Roma at least have some options even if they are limited. We should see a very typical Roma team defensively there’s a small chance that Pau Lopez will be rested however I still expect to see him in goal tomorrow night. The back line is likely to consist of Kolarov, Federico Fazio and Leonardo Spinazzola. It becomes very complicated in the defensive Midfield it is possible that Paulo Fonseca changes formations however I think it’s still a little risky given the fact that did the defense still has some issues despite playing well over the last two games. With Bryan Cristante out we should see their sense of Midfield Duo of Jordan Veretout and Javier Pastore who will once again be forced to play a little bit out of position. In the attacking Midfield in the central position we should see Nicolo Zaniolo besides him on the wing despite getting a red card in his last match Justin kluivert is eligible to play in the Europa League as his red card only applies to League action. On the other Wing we should see Alessandro Florenzi take up that spot. Upfront as a main Striker will be Edin Dzeko who himself is dealing with an injury concern. After having to deal with a fracture in his face he will be wearing the mask yet again. The key player for Roma for me is Gianluca Mancini Roma need to be able to defend at a high level if they’re able to do that they will not lose this game.

The Bundesliga leaders have had a good run of form despite losing to Borussia Dortmund last week they have been consistent and have shown some real quality. They typically lineup out of the 4-2-3-1 formation and it has worked for the majority of the season. They have some real quality players within the side that can do some serious damage in this competition. This all depends on what the Ambitions are in this competition whether or not they will take this seriously. They are almost needing a victory to advance. However they will still put out a strong team and try to get themselves three points to start their campaign in Europe. But again my guess is they will be prioritizing the Bundesliga over the Europa League this campaign. They have a tremendous goalkeeper in Sommer who is special. A reasonably strong a back line consisting of a Lainer at left-back besides him will be the centre-back partnership of Jantschke and Elvedi and then at right-back Wendt. In the defensive midfield we should see the typical duo that they have used in the Bundesliga this season with  Kramer and Zakaria they complemented each other very well and could be a problem for Roma. Then in the central Midfield Position will be Bénes beside him will be on the wing will be Thuram and Pléa. Then up front they’re talented Striker Breel Embolo .

Bottom line

There is not a lot of optimism surrounding Roma at the moment. They’ve had a couple games in a row in which they have underperformed. They’re lacking that consistency and coming off a short week I think it is likely they will struggle. Roma need a victory for momentum but I’m not sure they’re going to get it. The injuries of the team are real concerns and having to line up with only one a true defensive midfielder it is going to be a big adjustment. The number one most important thing is to not aggravate injuries and try to prevent them going forward this team cannot afford to go into this game and get another one. Some Roma youngsters will be called into the squad to try to deal with this to get the three point they are requiring they have to be mistake-free defensively and find some space and time to operate on the wings to try to facilitate something for Edin Dzeko. This will be a very difficult match and I think Roma are looking at another draw. I sincerely hope that I’m wrong but there’s not a lot of confidence or momentum going in their Direction. Roma need to find the form that had early in the season and try to assess that in tomorrow’s game. Meanwhile the Bundesliga side is flying lately they are really good form but have no points in the Europa League so far this makes me think that they are prioritizing the Bundesliga. It is unclear whether they’re going to go for it tomorrow night but if they are Roma could be in some trouble. They are completely healthy and are in great form they complete opposite of Roma they will be able to find a gap to exploit tomorrow night. They have a legitimate chance to go to the Stadio Olimpico and get three points this would bring them back into the fold in this group. Both teams are coming off a short week and I think creatively they will find things a little bit difficult. This could end up being a very ugly game that ends with one goal going either way. Roma have a great chance to make a statement with three points that would secure themselves some momentum and confidence not only in this competition for going forward however given everything that’s going on I just don’t see it happening. Roma will be able to defend well enough not to lose in an ugly game I see points being shared between both teams In Rome on Thursday night.
