Following a 0-0 draw to Inter Milan at the San Siro over the weekend, Roma prepared for their midweek fixture in the Europa League. Matchday 6 could determine almost anything. Gladbach Roma and Istanbul we’re all in contention of qualifying for the Knockout rounds. Roma faced off against Wolfsberger for the second time after a very disappointing 1-1 draw in Austria at the beginning of the group. Everything was on the line it was a match that felt like a must-win. Things could not have gotten off to a better start. With three points Roma would win the group as long as other results play in their favor. In the opening 10 minutes of the match, Roma was given a penalty. Diego Perotti would step up and convert to score giving Roma a 1-0 lead. Wolfsberger will get right back into the game when Alessandro Florenzi puts the ball into the back of his own net to equalize for Wolfsberger. Roma did not play well in the opening 45 minutes but still found a way to retake the lead just minutes after conceding. Edin Dzeko converted after the own goal as Roma Retook the lead making it 1-1 with 45 minutes to play. As it stood Roma would be going through as group winners. In Germany, Istanbul & Gladbach were in a 1-1 draw. All the Roma needed to do his hold on for 45 minutes and not only win they advance to the knockout stages but they would win the group as well. However, circumstances did not align with what Roma hoped for. After Antonia Mirante was injured this forced Pau Lopez back into the game who is expected to be rested until this weekend. Wolfsberger wasted no time scoring almost immediately afterward making it 2-2. Roma now needed to find a way back and front if they wanted to win the group. It wasn’t an encouraging performance it was a match that felt like a must-win. Matches like these are games in which Roma really needs to take care of business. Roma had more than enough opportunities to put it away but it would not happen despite them later adjustments it was not enough Roma fall short at the Stadio Olimpico in what was a 2-2 draw at the final whistle. Istanbul would score late in Germany as a team that Roma beat by a combined seven goals wins the group that should have been Roma’s To lose in fact it was. Despite the poor performance, Roma reaches the round of 32 in the Europa League.

Roma would be forced to make several adjustments ahead of a must-win match. Due to some injuries, there was quite a bit of Shifting around but would maintain the 4-2-3-1 formation. In goal filling in for the injured Paul Lopez would be Antonia Mirante who is coming off a brilliant display against Inter Milan. There would be several changes to Roma’s backline. At left-back would be a Leonardo spinazzola, beside him would be the center-back partnership of Gianluca Mancini and Federico Fazio then at right-back would it be Roma Captain Alexandro Florenzi. The defensive Midfield pair would stay the same with Jordan Veretout and Diawara. Two changes in the attacking Midfield with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Justin kluivert still out. In the central position would be Hendrick Mkhitaryan beside him on the left-wing would be Diego Perotti. Then on the opposite side on the right-wing would be the Turkish star Cengiz Under. Then upfront as always the Bosnian Striker edin Dzeko.

After preparations and predictions, the match was just about to get underway in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico. A match with everything on the line as we got underway in the Eternal City. The match could not have started any better for Roma before anything started happening Roma had an opportunity to put themselves front in the opening minutes of the match. Edin Dzeko was taken down in the Box in the fifth minute as a Roma was given a penalty. Diego Perotti stepped up and converted on it giving a Roma a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes gone. This would not last as Roma would allow Wolfsberger back into the game coming from their own doing. As Alessandro Florenzi put the ball in the back of its own that to equalize for Wolfsberger. Just like that, it was back to square one. It was a back-and-forth battle as neither team seemed to be at their best but nonetheless, Roma took an opportunity when they saw one. In the Nineteenth Diego Perotti assisted edin Dzeko who stuck the ball in the back of the net to give Roma a to 2-1 lead they were back in front and if things stand they would win the group. There were not a lot of chances flowing through the remainder of the first half it was not Roma’s strongest performance and Wolfsberger struggled in there as well. Meanwhile, Istanbul equalized late in the first half in Germany as a Gladbach and Istanbul we’re battling out a 1-1 game. It wasn’t a strong first-half from either team but so far so good for Roma.

Diego Perotti and edin Dzeko have Roma in front 2-1 going into the second half. They needed to hold this lead to win the group which was their aim going into the match. It was possession football and it was not very exciting up to the point. The game surely was going to open up in the second half. Wolfsberger nearly equalized just minutes into the second half when Sean Wiseman hit the post coming up from a vicious header. There were very limited chances for Roma but Under tried to pull one past the keeper ultimately misfiring. Shortly after Antonio Mirante had to come out due to injury forcing into action Pau Lopez who needed some much-needed rest after picking up a minor injury last weekend. Within minutes Wolfsberger had equalized I do not fault Pau Lopez for the situation. Nonetheless, Roma was in trouble. They have lost their grip on the lead in the group as Istanbul and Gladbach continued to battle out a 1-1 game. It felt like in desperation time for Roma as Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolo zaniolo entered the game to try to give it Roma a spark they should have had from the very beginning of the game. Minutes later Hendrick Mkhitaryan came close missing on a header coming off a fast break. Just a few minutes later edin Dzeko would have the same fate he came very close but his header went wide late in the game the chances only escalated for Roma but they were playing against the clock. Edin Dzeko had two chances within minutes of each other which failed to convert on the chances. In the closing moments, Gianluca Mancini and edin Dzeko both had chances that seemed too significant in the end. Istanbul had jumped in front of Gladbach in Germany in a late goal as they were on the verge of winning the group. Time Ran out on Roma as they squandered a chance to win the group. Instead of a fellow Europa League team, Roma would be forced to go to battle with a team that was in the Champions League in what was an overall disappointment everything was there for Roma tonight and they quite simply let everyone down.

Roma did their job well enough to get through to the round of 32. They deserve credit but this has been a rocky road from the very beginning. This is a relatively easy group and Roma struggled to win It a draw turned out to be enough to advance Roma Into The Knockout stages but the performance itself was strictly not good enough. Roma had an opportunity here to win the group all they needed to do is pick up three points and get a favor from Istanbul. Istanbul ultimately did them a favor they beat Gladbach in Germany. However, Roma did not hold up their end of the bargain. At home at the Stadio Olimpico, they failed to beat a team that was last in their Europa League group. It was an utterly uneventful uninspiring point this evening. Defensively Roma was all over the place losing possession regularly. Going forward they had limitations with their attack and just could not finish enough chances. Florenzi was abysmal and he has to take some blame as he put a goal in the back of his own net shortly after Roma had just taken the lead. There are very few positives to be taken from this match and that was proven over the 90 minutes. Roma took the lead twice and failed to get the three points necessary that would have won them the group. It wasn’t a very strong group so defeat itself is not incredible but nonetheless, it felt required in this match. Matches like this of this magnitude Roma just have to find a way to win these. Despite confirming their place in the next round this team no longer looks like one of the favorites. Can Roma catch fire and win the Europa League absolutely but as it stands they’re no longer going to be viewed as one of the favorites for the Europa League. Diego Perotti put in an incredibly strong performance with a goal and an assist but outside of that it was embarrassing and the performance was not good enough Destiny was in their own hands and they were unable to do their part.
