Roma are coming off a very disappointing yet controversial match against Torino to start the new year. As Torino beat Roma 2-0 at the stadio olimpico on Sunday night. Roma were unable to start the new year the way they would have wanted. Roma have a chance to rebound on Thursday night as Roma start their Coppa Italia campaign before their much important match up with Juventus on Sunday. Roma travel to Parma for the round of 16 and the Coppa Italia. Last season Roma’s campaign in the Italian cup did not fare too well. They did enough to get to the quarter-finals but got absolutely crushed by Florentina 7-1 victory. Knockout football it’s something Paulo Fonseca has specialized in during his career and this is an opportunity for the Roma fans to see what this team looks like in a win or go home situation. In addition to Roma trying to get to the quarter-finals they will have another chance against Parma. Parma is a team that they had lost to earlier in the season in what was at the time a very tired Roma who just played several games within weeks of each other. Roma didn’t show up for that game for a very good reason however they were poor on that day. Roma will have the opportunity to get revenge on them and get themselves into the quarter-finals. Despite the reverse fixture Roma will be slight favorite at Parma. This is one of the trophies that Roma could have a good chance of winning. It is important that they take this seriously and they continue to hunt for a trophy. Will Parma upset Roma for the second consecutive game? Or will the Romans rebound from their previous loss and get into the quarter-finals of the Italian cup.
Roma as always will come out with the 4-2-3-1 formation as they typically do. There could be some minor adjustments ahead of this match. Roma have a really big game against Juventus on Sunday so it is possible that some starters will be spared for that match. Pau Lopez typically starts in goal. However Thursday night in the Coppa Italia Antonio Mirante could be given the start. At left-back should be Leonardo spinazzola as Alex Kolarov will likely be rested. The centre-back partnership Federico Fazio and Mert Certin with Alessandro Florenzi at right-back. The majority of Roma’s defense I think will be rested. Roma need to put out a strong enough team to get the job done but considering they play Juventus this weekend they need to play a somewhat different lineup. Roma lineup certainly good enough to get the job done but you don’t want to risk players especially with the game on Sunday upcoming. The defensive Midfield should probably stay the same with Jordan Veretout and Diawara. In the attacking Midfield I would make a couple of changes as well. In the center position I would keep Lorenzo Pellegrini. Then on the outside we should see Cengiz get a chance to start as he is lacking in confidence at the moment this is a good opportunity to prove himself a little as he is lacking in confidence at the moment. Justin kluivert has now recovered from his injury but even though he is available I would bring him off the bench in this game as I expect Diego Perotti to start once again in his position. Upfront as the main Striker should be Nikola kalinic unfortunately Edin Dzeko has to face his two-game suspension from the competition after spitting at the referee during the quarter finals last year. On the bench Roma have options with a lot of the regular starters available if needed.
Parma typically operates out of the 4-3-3 formation play really attacking football which sometimes can be their downfall. It’s going to be really important for this team to be able to defend. However, their attack will not be as fluid as they are without Roberto Inglese. Inside the 4-3-3 formation other than just a few adjustments it’s likely to look more or less the same than it did against Florentina. In goal as always will be Lupe Sepe. In their backline at left-back is likely to be Pezzella beside him the center-back partnership of Bruno Alves & Lacoponi. Then opposite side likely at right-back is Former Manchester United Defender Darmian. In Parma’s attacking Midfield they typically go with Cozzarella in the Central position with a Zevedo Junior and Kucka on the outside. Up front, we should see Gervinho as the main Striker beside him Yann Karamoh and Kaulusevski on the wings. A strong team that can wound Roma Gervinho is key.
Roma have a chance to go on a cup run right here right now. The Coppa Italia is a very winnable competition for Roma. Roma have not won a trophy in ages and this is a really good chance to start this campaign. Romans biggest priority right now is the game on Sunday but nonetheless Paulo Fonseca and this Roma team still be looking to get themselves into the quarter-finals of the Italian domestic cup. They will face a familiar foe as they travel to Parma to play them the second time this season. The first time didn’t go so well but that was largely because of the amount of matches they had played with almost the same linup due to some injury concerns. Roma will be looking for an opportunity to get some Revenge from their previous loss. I think it’s highly speculated that Roma will play slightly different because it is my belief that many starters will be rested. However even if that is the case they still have a really good chance to win this game. Not to mention the Stars will still be on the bench and have an opportunity to come into the game and make a difference if they are needed. Edin dzeko will not be playing the match because of his suspension from last season however with all that being said Roma need to try to win every competition they can. They have the team and ability to handle Parma but equally Parma has a really good team that is capable of going on a Deep Run in competitions like this. Roma have to make sure they do whatever it takes to progress through his competition while trying not to wear out many of their players because of the game on Sunday. Roma also need this for momentum after starting the year with less than an impressive performance and controversial circumstances in the loss to Torino. A win or a convincing win in the Copa Italia will give the team a lot of confidence going into the game against Juventus. Parma will make it interesting but in the end I think Roma have to win this game if they’re unable to do that they will not go into the game on Sunday with confident and Roman need to be in a confident mood. Roma will do what it takes to get the job done while trying to preserve some of their key players that they will need Sunday. Roma make the quarterfinals but even though it won’t be easy.
