Roma vs Genoa Talking Points #744

EOqsveqXsAAEqWd

Last night Roma picked up their first victory in the league in 2020. As I’ve mentioned Roma went into the winter break with consistency and pretty incredible form. The two week break over Christmas certainly didn’t help the situation. They came out a little flat in their opening two games and suffered back-to-back losses. They had played so well up to that point. There were unbeaten and eight games prior to their loss to Torino and Juventus. They had a great chance to turn this around yesterday night. Prior to the game yesterday they picked up a midweek victory with a 2-0 win over Parma in the Copa Italia round of 16. Even though the match wasn’t going to reflect their table positioning it gave them a little bit of confidence ahead of a really important match against Genoa team that was sitting near the bottom of the table. With the Derby next weekend it was really important that Roma put in a really good performance given the type of form that Lazio is in. They traveled to the stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa a place that many teams find difficult regardless of how strong the team is it’s never an routine victory. Things could not have started any better for Roma as they took a very early lead in this game. Roman inconsistent Turkish star Cengiz ended up scoring his first goal since the first match of the season. Putting together an intended cross from the corner of the box that just was out of the reach of  Pellegrini as the ball rolled into the back of the net to give Roma a 1-0 lead. This could be really important for under as he is lacking confidence at the moment. Roma continued to dominate this game they had control we’re creating lots of chances and had a significant advantage in The Possession battle. The ball was is  Genoa’s danger area  frequently. Right before halftime Leonardo spinazzola opened up Genoa again Roma’s left back that nearly left for Inter Milan last week made a big impact for the Romans. He did a really good job of cutting into the box propelling himself around Defenders before trying to cross it into edin dzeko. Genoa ended up putting the ball in the back of their own that as his shot took a big deflection to give Roma a 2-0 lead. Roma making things really quite simple as they were finding things quite easy. However Genoa responded immediately after a cross from Midfield Pandev ended up scoring at the other hand to end the first staff. After 45 minutes it was a 2-1 lead for Roma. All of a sudden Genoa seem to have the energy that they needed. they really pressurized the Romans and push them back as Genoa was coming forward with confidence and conviction. However fortunately for Roma Pau Lopez is Roma’s goalkeeper. This Spaniard came through in some of the biggest moments of the game that eventually took momentum away from Genoa. Coming off a cross Pandev put his head through Paul Lopez made one of the best saves of the entire season. That ball was going into that top corner and it seemed like there was nothing that could be done. Pau Lopez rescued the day as he orchestrated his body back pushing the ball out from underneath the crossbar as he fell in the back of the net. One of the most incredible saves we have seen so far this season. That was a huge momentum shift in the game. Shortly after that Genoa will  struck again and yet again Pau Lopez comes up with a big save to deny a comeback. This was only one goal game at that moment Pau Lopez came through in that moment to a certain extent to rescue them. shortly after Roma started to get their momentum back and once a costly mistake was made by Genoa’s goalkeeper Roma pounced and took advantage of the opportunity. Lorenzo Pellegrini picked off a poor pass from the goalkeeper as he sent through Edin Dzeko who found scored to give a Roma the 3-1 lead as Edin Dzeko scored his 98th goal for Roma. Roma would hold on to earn an important Victory as they reclaim their Champions League spot and get back their much-needed momentum as they head into a week in which they play Juventus and Lazio Roma got back on track at the exact right time they are finally playing to their capabilities once again.

Cengiz Under scores at last

Cengiz Under over the previous two season showed to be a breakout star for the Romans. His first season was absolutely breathtaking and last season if it wasn’t for injuries he could have done something incredibly special. He is a player that has lacked confidence all season and once again has dealt with some injuries. There have been rumors of his departure over the last several weeks. It is quite possible he will not be on this team next season. Nonetheless he has the opportunity to at least earn a place on this team for the following campaign. He finally scored just the second time this season since the first game of the season. I’m not sure this will dictate the future of what could become in this season but getting that goal will give the Turkish star some confidence for the rest of the season. He was phased out once Nicolo Zaniolo was moved on to the wing. At this moment Nicolo Zaniolo and Justin kluivert are better prospects with higher ceilings. The development of these two players has mutually sidelined the Turkish star. With the injury he had the opportunity to start many games on the wing it will give him a chance to prove his worth again. He will go into the next several games with more confidence finally finding the back of the net once again.  Roma need to get the best out of him while he’s healthy because he will be given that opportunity. It is my guess that he will be starting the majority of the games the rest of the season now that he has more confidence he can finally show us what he’s worth. It’s still highly likely he will not be here next summer but in the short-term we need to get the best out of Turk and he needs to show Roma that he is worth holding onto.

Genoa’s Nightmare

Antonio-Sanabria-Source-Gianluca-Di-Marzio
Genoa continue to live a nightmare have they seen that they can’t wake up from. Going into the season there wasn’t a high expectations for them to thrive however they were not expected to be in the position they are in. They had enough quality within their side to at least do enough to survive the season. It just seems is that they’re not going to be able to do that. This team seems to be destined for relegation which is incredibly sad because Genoa is a historic team in Italian football they have won the league countless occasions and are one of the most historical clubs in Italy. The Derby featuring Genoa and Sampdoria has become one of the most underrated in Europe. If they are not at the top of Italian football we’re not going to be able to witness that. There’s no hope for survival it just doesn’t seem that this is going away anytime soon. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they have a small chance but not high likelihood. what the injuries they have with her two best attacking players this is going to become more and more difficult. They had moments last night that they could have potentially not necessarily taken the lead but came back and maybe Salvage something. Roma deserve to win this game but there was moments in which it looked like they can come back. They’ve gone through three managers already this season it doesn’t seem that they have the ingredients to get it done. I’ve said this for years you need three things to survive a season if you are a lower team. A goal scorer someone that can give you at least 10 to 15 goals. A solid defense or goalkeeper that can keep you in games that you don’t deserve to be in with a manager who has the Tactical approach to get the job done. It seems like Genoa doesn’t have any of the three and they are going to be headed down to Serie B I hope I’m proven wrong because it would be heartbreaking to see this team not be apart of the top of Italian football no longer.

Pau Lopez Game-Changer

Pau Lopez has truly become the answer for Roma at the goalkeeping position. Last year this was one of Roma’s biggest problems. The absence of Alisson Becker really held a certain weight over Roma. Roma went for the cheap option last year after taking Sweden to the quarterfinals of the World Cup Robin Olson arrived in the Italian capital. It was trial by fire this wasn’t something that worked. Even though he had his moments it was clear from the very beginning that he was not good enough for Roma. Nothing against Robin Olsen because I think he’s a fine goalkeeper but Roma was a little bit above his standard. He sometimes struggles in the game’s most important moments. Pau Lopez turned out to be his replacement. The Spaniard has done really well in Italian Capital not only is he relatively young at just 25 years of age but he has the potential to be the number one option for Roma for the next decade. He has adapted to the style of football at Roma played and he plays a role in the attack as Roma is a team that like to play out from the back he plays a role in the attack he fits what they team does. Not to mention he is come through and some really big moments he’s had games that he hasn’t been at his best but he has yet to make a costly mistake that cost Roma goals something that Olson did seem to do quite frequently. He was one of the most outstanding performers over the weekend. Roma ended up beating Genoa in a 3-1 victory but when the game was in balance he made some really big saves that made the biggest difference. The save he made on Pandev was absolutely extraordinary. His header was heading into the back of the net before Pau Lopez made an acrobatic save pushing the ball underneath the crossbar to make a big save. Then after that he made another big save as well as a tremendous save at the very end. Pau Lopez may have not had a lot to do in their victory but when he was called upon he came through in the games biggest moment that is the difference between good goalkeepers and great goalkeepers. He is one of the best in the league when he’s at his best yesterday evening he was at his best in a very difficult place to play. He had proven match in and match out that he is the answer for Roma. He has been an incredible  because of his intelligence and his ability to perform on a consistent basis. Roma’s defense all of a sudden has drastically improved it could be Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini developing a great partnership but Pau Lopez has without question played a role in Roma’s Improvement in that area. Goalkeepers need to perform when they are needed the most against Genoa in what was at the time a one-goal game he came through in really big moments throughout the game but when the match had its breaking point he was able to deliver. He might have only been asked to do very little but when that moment came he rose above it. Just another outstanding display from Romans Spaniard with Golden Gloves and the scary thing is Pau Lopez has only just begun his story in the Eternal City there will be plenty more for what we saw at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris Sunday.

Confidence Restored

Pescara Calcio v AS Roma - Serie A
Roma have had a rough start to the new season with losses against Juventus and Torino. A large part of this has been the international break when Roma had a two-week break the momentum was at an all-time high they were playing some of their best football of the Season. Having not been able to play for two weeks really kind of held them back in terms of the confidence and momentum they were playing with. It disrupted the momentum. After two games in which they underperformed Roma are finally getting back to playing the are accustomed to playing. It’s more about all of that Roma need to find that place where they can continue to perform. After back-to-back losses they finally look like the team we saw 2 end 2019. Roma have Juventus and Lazio this week and even though Roma will be the underdog in both of those games they will have the momentum and confidence they need to compete. Roma needs to have confidence especially with some of the injuries that they are dealing with. If they carry this confidence and momentum in both those games even if they will be underdogs they will have a chance to get the job done. Everything is set up perfectly for Roma. They lost to Juventus last weekend in a match they were the more dominant team for the majority of the match. They will have another shot at them in the Copa Italia quarterfinals. Then next weekend it is the Roman Derby again Lazio. Lazio is playing at an incredible level despite the amount of penalties that they’ve been getting they have won 11 games in a row. This is the hottest form they have ever been in This sets up perfectly for Roma to ruin it. There’s a lot of possibilities confidence and momentum of a team can go a long way and Roma seemingly have gotten that back now.
