A.S Roma 4 Lecce 0FT
Following three losses in a row Roma finally got a victory on Thursday night in a 1-0 victory over Gent thanks to a Carles Perez goal as Roma’s new signing scored his first goal for the club in his Europa League debut. Outside of that, it was a really disappointing and unconvincing performance. On Thursday the match itself result was more important than the performance but the Hope was a performance would follow. Going into a Sunday night’s game at the Stadio Olimpico Roma still held a three-game losing streak in the league and were winless in their last five matches this was a great opportunity for Roma to get a very important victory that I can actually close the gap between themselves and Atalanta for the Champions League spot. They would face Lecce for a second time this season. thanks to an earlier 1-0 victory thanks to an edin Dzeko goal that gave Roma all three points earlier in the season. Despite that Lecce played them tough and had a three-game winning streak as they were fighting to get away from the relegation zone as they start to create separation. There is a little bit of history between the two teams in the 1986 season Roma lost a home game to Lecce that prevented them from potentially winning the title the next week at Juventus this was a long time ago but the director of Lecce was part of that game which gave the team a little more inspiration. After three bad performances in the league Roma finally showed up and showed what they are capable of. Roma dominated the match from the very start to the Finish. Even though Lecce was in good form Roma just ran them over. Cengiz Under finally getting that confidence as he struck a through Pass from Mkhitaryan into the back of the net to give Roma a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Near the end of the first half Roma continues to be incredibly dangerous on the counter-attack as edin Dzeko set up mikatarian for Roma to double their lead. Roma leads to 2-0 after 45 minutes in what was a completely dominated first-half from the Romans. Roma only continues this in the second half as they just ran away with it before Lecce even had a chance to take their breath. edin Dzeko gave Roma a 3-0 lead scoring his 102nd goal for Roma taking him to sixth on the all-time scoring list. it wasn’t over yet with about 10 minutes ago Alex Kolarov added to the goalscoring fun as Roma rolled them over in a 4-0 victory. Roma snaps their losing streak in the league having been winless in their previous five matches. On top of that, they put together one of their best performances of the season as they finally gain some confidence after a bad run of form. this result and performance should push them forward Lecce shows up at the Olimpico and gets throttled by the Romans as Roma wins back-to-back Paulo Fonseca has got this team back where they need to be they just need to continue to take this momentum through the rest of the season. It’s all smiling at the Stadio Olimpico this evening after that performance.
Roma makes no changes to their formation as they stick with the 4-2-3-1 ahead of this match. Paulo Fonseca would make a couple of changes from the win against Gent on Thursday night. In goal as always would be the Spaniard Pau Lopez as he looks for his first clean sheet in many games. In the backline at left-back would be Alex Kolarov who gets his second consecutive start. Beside him, we would see the return of the center-back partnership of Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini. Then on the opposite side for at the right-back position would be Bruno Peres as he comes in for Leonardo Spinazzola Roma stays the same in the defensive Midfield with the duo of Jordan veretout and Bryan cristante. Despite uninspiring performances, the last couple of games Lorenzo Pellegrini remains in the central part of the attacking Midfield. On the left wing, we would see Hendrick Mkhitaryan come in for Diego Perotti. Then on the opposite side on the right wing, we would see Cengiz Under get a start for the first time in a couple of games as he is in dire need of confidence. Then upfront as the main Striker as always would be the big Bosnian edin Dzeko. On the bench, Roma would have Carles Perez Justin kluivert and Leonardo spinazzola available if needed.
After preparations and predictions, the match was just about to get underway at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as Roma looked to end their league losing streak at home against on a Saturday evening in the Italian capital. Many of the league matches were postponed due to the virus but Roma’s region was not affected as the match was set to go on as scheduled. Roma has not been playing well lately and didn’t play particularly well in their Victory on Thursday night. Roma came out of the match really aggressive attacking right away often trying to orchestrate themselves on the counter-attack. They looked a completely different team than what we have seen from them lately and this was evident early. In the opening minute of the game, Cengiz came forward on the outside as the Turkish Winger picked out a cross for edin Dzeko. The Roman Captain tried to strike at a very difficult angle but hit the side netting. Despite that, it was a very aggressive approach to start the game. Roma didn’t stop there it was an avalanche of chances to start the game as Lecce was struggling for possession and were forced to defend almost constantly at the beginning of the match. On a breakaway, edin Dzeko picked out a pass for Lorenzo Pellegrini. It was a poor touch from the midfielder as Lorenzo Pellegrini continues to struggle over the last couple of games. He is in need of confidence and was unable to supply what should have been the first goal. Just two minutes later Roma came forward again as Cengiz saw a strike from deep blast over the bar. It was not the best decision from The Young Turk but he would make up for it as the match continued. Just one minute later Lorenzo Pellegrini set up Dzeko for scoring opportunity he put his foot through a strike right in front of the goalkeeper but didn’t have the power on it to stick it in the back of the net. Roma just kept coming forward with pace and athleticism they look so antagonizing going forward which begs the question where has this team been all season. Roma at their best can win the league title the problem is this team hasn’t seen their best very often. Roma was searching for an early breakthrough and in the 13th minute, they got it. henrikh Mkhitaryan would pick off a pass from just outside the box. The Armenian midfielder came forward on the break with edin Dzeko on one side and Cengiz on another who was a little behind. Henrikh Mkhitaryan picked out a perfect pass sliding into Cengiz the Turkish International hit a sweet strike on the first touch sliding the ball into the bottom corner to give a Roma a 1-0
Cengiz Under give Roma early lead with smooth strike
lead. It would be the third goal of the season for Cengiz Under. He has been really inconsistent and needed that goal for confidence whether or not he will return next year is up in the air but if he can perform like that more consistently Roma might hang on to him after all. the goal was largely orchestrated by Hendrick Mkhitaryan who made a really intelligent decision from getting the ball to supplying the right pass that ended up being Roma’s opening goal. Roma, we’re just getting warmed up they just kept coming. as Lorenzo Pellegrini sent a through ball into Cengiz but the Turk was denied a second goal as the keeper made the save. Finally, Lecce got themselves a chance but Pau Lopez would deny Antonio Barak. As the match progressed and we got into the late part of the first-half Roma’s intensity only intensified as they were going for the throat. A few minutes later Gianluca Mancini came close putting his head through a cross from the corner narrowly missing. Just two minutes later edin Dzeko came through with a strike from distance. After Under had the ball going forward he made an unselfish play setting up edin Dzeko instead of striking from a difficult angle. Even last season he would not have made that pass. edin Dzeko did not end up converting on the strike from distance but nonetheless it was a really well-executed play by both of them. Pellegrini Miss would follow as he was having another horror Show. edin Dzeko would be denied from close range just minutes later. it was only going to be so long before Roma got themselves a second goal. In the 37th minute, they stuck another one in the back of the net. edin Dzeko on a fast-break Sent a perfect through-ball into Mkhitaryan who struck the ball in between the Keeper’s legs in what was a perfectly executed play to give Roma a 2-0 lead. it would be henrikh Mkhitaryan fourth goal of the season. When he has been healthy he’s been one of Roma’s better players. In the closing moments of the half, Roma had two more chances to extend it from Bruno Peres and Bryan cristante but after the first half, it was a 2-0 lead thanks Mkhitaryan and Cengiz Under as Roma are finally playing the football we expect from them.
Mkhitaryan & Cengiz were on target in the first half as Roma ran out to a 2-0 lead
For the first time since 2020 Roma really looked like a great team. They have improved drastically from the last few weeks. Roma played a really phenomenal first half of football they were dangerous and on the counter-attack every 5 minutes. Roma needed to keep that pressure going to see out the victory. A win could be really important in trying to close the gap between themselves and Atalanta. Paulo Fonseca had seen enough of Lorenzo Pellegrini as he was taken off at half-time in favor of Justin kluivert. Ultimately the right decision Lorenzo Pellegrini just hasn’t been himself lately and his performances to a certain extent have hurt the team. Roma continued to look dangerous coming forward had advantages in possession and we’re really fluid with their communication and passing. Lecce struggled to get anything going as Roma continue to dominate The Run of play. They tried to continue to extend their lead as Alex Kolarov came close putting his head through a Jordan veretout cross that came very close to giving Roma another goal. With about 20 minutes remaining Roma would go to their bench just for the second time as Paulo Fonseca as Carles Perez was brought on for Cengiz Under. the Turkish Winger had a very productive afternoon scoring a goal as he is going to gain some confidence after the performance. As the game progressed Roma was getting closer and closer to three points as they continued to dominate. Lecce, we’re creating chances occasionally but weren’t able to convert on them as it was all Roma a little later edin Dzeko was denied from really close range as the Bosnian tried to extend Roma’s lead but In the 69th minute, less than a minute later edin Dzeko would give Roma the third goal. From just outside the box Carles Perez supplied a short pass to Kolarov on the wing. The Serbian picked out a strike for edin Dzeko the Bosnian hit it once and then a second time as he blasted the ball into the back of the net to give Roma a 3-0 lead.
Edin Dzeko scores his 102nd Roma goal as he moves into 6th All time on Roma’s scoring list
The goal was initially not given but after a review from VAR, the goal was given as the Olimpico erupted. It would be Edin Dzeko 15th goal of the season and his 102nd goal for Roma as he goes level with Montella for sixth on Roma’s all-time scoring list. Roma, we’re not finished yet they continued to go forward and dominate the match. Shortly after the goal, Carles Perez came really close on a strike from the center of the Box Roma’s new signing narrowly missed the target. 2 minutes later Edin Dzeko almost scored yet again with his header coming from a cross missing. with about 13 minutes to go Gianluca Lapadula hit the post one of the few chances of the entire game Lecce. Roma continue to see the game out with about 10 minutes to go in the 80th minute Roma would make it four as Carles Perez Received the ball from Justin kluivert before laying it off to Alex Kolarov who ripped the ball through the goalkeeper into the back of the net to make it 4-0 it would be his sixth goal of the season. Roma had a late chance with about 2 minutes to go to extend the lead even further Justin kluivert blistering strike at the keeper was saved. The match would play itself out for the final couple minutes as Roma held on to steamroll Lecce in a 4-0 victory ending their losing streak in Italian football as the confidence has been restored the Romans put together one of their best performance of the season.
It is not the best moment for Roma and they have been struggling significantly since the start of the new year. The winter break really affected the form that Roma had. Coming into this game Roma had lost three consecutive games and was winless in their last five. After winning in the Europa League on Thursday despite not playing very well a self-belief has ignited within this team. Roma finally delivered a performance that they can feel proud about. It was not the easiest match going into it because Lecce despite being at the bottom half of the table have done well and some of the bigger teams and had won three consecutive games they were playing with confidence and had a lot of momentum going into what was going to be a tough game at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Thursday Roma got the victory but tonight Roma got the performance that they have been waiting for. It was complete and utter domination from Roma they ripped through the backline almost repeatedly. From the first kick of the ball into the last they went forward they were hyper-aggressive and attacked they got on the counter so frequently and we’re antagonizing on a regular basis. This is the thing that frustrates me about Roma they’re capable of playing like this they have this in them it was one of their best performances of the Season Roma just can’t seem to do it on a more consistent basis. If Roma were able to play like this is the entire season they would be in the race for the scudetto and at least have the possibility of winning the title. It was a sensation display from all parts. Lecce didn’t come through very often but when they did Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini were there to stop them. That’s not to mention Alex Kolarov and Bruno Peres played such a role in the attack and getting the ball forward. Lorenzo Pellegrini yet again disappointed in his display but outside of that, it was a nearly Flawless performance one of the most complete performances of the entire season. On the counter attack, they perfectly set up Cengiz and mikatar n to score and then we saw perfectly executed plays from inside the Box in the second half that led to a massive Victory. Mkhitaryan, in particular, was really special. An assist and a goal for the Armenian who has been really special when he has been healthy and played one of Rome has better players this season. It just was a collective display from a team that needed the results. On top of that, Dzeko’s second-half goal took him to the 6th on Roma’s all-time scoring list as he continues to make more history with this club. it has become difficult to pick a man-of-the-match for this game because the entire team played to their absolute best which is why they were so scary on the break. On miss occasion, Hendrick mkhitaryan was the man of the match for the way he played his role within the attack by scoring his goal and also supplying opportunities for his teammates. He really took it up a level in this hugely important game. Roma gets the three points and minimizes the deficit between themselves and Atalanta at least for the time being. Paulo Fonseca’s side responded to the criticism with a dominating victory against a team that was on a three-game winning streak. A display like this is exactly what they needed the confidence has been restored as this should push them through the rest of the season.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Henrikh Mkhitaryan
