Last night Roma ended their winning streak in Italian football with one of the best performances of the season from a Roma team that has struggled lately. Before the turn of the new year Roma was unbeaten in nine games and we’re starting to find their footing in the Champions League race. Since then inconsistencies and injuries have happened that have derailed they’re great to run of form. Roma ended up losing 5 games since January. Coming into the game against leche on a Sunday night at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma had just ended their losing streak in all competitions with a 1-0 victory at home against Kent in the Europa League round of 32. It was a Carles Perez goal that proved to be the difference in the match. The Hope was following Thursday’s victory that the performance would reignite on a Sunday night. After losing three consecutive matches in the league that has damaged their Ambitions for Champions League football they got back on track with an emphatic victory. Roma took on Lecce for the second time as they looked to complete a season sweep. Lecce played Roma tough it took a header from edin Dzeko to split the difference in a game. Coming into the match Lecce was in great form as they continued to try to build their case for survival in the league. Meanwhile, Roma had struggled to find their footing. That all changed on a Sunday night it was a performance of pure domination as we saw attacking football brilliance. Roma dominated all evening. They were relentless on the counter-attack and continued to supply aggression and pressure on the left a backline. They got forward and made them pay on the counter numerous times. Early in the match, Cengiz broke the game open to give Roma a 1-0 lead after Mkhitaryan supplied a perfect pass on the counter-attack as Cengiz connected on a crafty finish to give the Turkish star some confidence that he is in need of as Roma took a 1-0 lead. Roma had control while defending at a high level when Lecce came forward even though it was infrequent. Roma was on the attack every 5 minutes and Lecce could not handle the attack that Roma was supplying. Late in the first half, Roma would find that second goal as they got closer to breaking their losing streak. Edin Dzeko on the counter-attack set up Mkhitaryan on the counter as the Armenian midfielder tuck the ball in between the goalkeeper’s legs to give a Roma a 2-0 lead. They went into the second half with a sizable Advantage. All Roma needed to do is ride out the match and minimize opportunities for the visitors to get back into the game. Edin Dzeko would eventually extend Roma’s lead even further. Carles Perez connected with Alex Kolarov before edin Dzeko struck at the goal before putting the ball in the back of the net on is rebound as Roma opened up a 3-0 lead. It would be edin Dzeko’s 102nd goal for Roma which took him to 6th highest in club history. Unfortunately for Lecce that wasn’t the end with about 10 minutes ago Justin kluivert and Carlos Perez connected before laying it off to ALEKS Kolarov who struck the back of the net to give Roma a 4-0 lead. Roma ended up snapping their losing streak in what was one of their most impressive performances of the season. After being winless in their last five games in the league the fans at the Stadio Olimpico finally had something to smile about in what was a hugely important victory for a club that needed that performance.
Best Performance of the Season
This was arguably the best performance of the season for Roma. Coming into this game Roma we’re not in their best moment. They had struggled significantly over the last several games. They had been winless in their last five matches and had fallen out of the Champions League place. Roma needed a response immediately things were starting to get out of hand at a Rapid Pace. A victory was needed on Thursday and they got one even though the performance on Thursday night was very uninspiring. None the less they ended up getting as a result which had restored their confidence at least temporarily. Roma needed more than the results they needed a performance because there was a lack of confidence within the team yesterday was a great example of what Roma could potentially be. It was one of their best performances of the season they defended really well. Neutralized the attack even though what they did not create a lot of chances when they came and dangerous areas Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini were there to meet them and stop the attack. On the other hand, the left-back and the right-back Kolarov and Bruno Peres played a really big role in fueling the attack. Roma got themselves back together as they finally rediscovered their identity. Roma dominated the entire match. Lecce may be at the bottom half of the table but they had won three consecutive games and have gotten results again some of the bigger teams. Roma absolutely steamrolled them throughout the match. On the counter-attack, they were antagonizing they provided pace on the wing and service through the Midfield. On top of all that they were clinical in front of goal Roma got off to a great start in his match with two goals before halftime this was unlike anything we have seen from this Roma team. It was such a dominating display if Roma were able to play like this throughout the entire season they would be in the title race and not that far off the top of the league. The problem has been Roma has been so inconsistent with this type of display. With all that being said crushing Lecce over the weekend will give them a sense of confidence and belief in their ability to progress in Europe and to close the gap in the league. A performance like this can Inspire Roma to push themselves forward through the rest of the season
Lecce Don’t Panic
Lecce was horrible last night and was dominated throughout the duration of the match. They had a three-game winning streak going into this match as they were on the brink a creating separation from the relegation zone. The team has performed at a high level much of the season despite their league positioning. They have gotten points off Inter Milan AC Milan and Napoli that’s not an easy task. Against Roma, they struggled to do much of anything and got absolutely dominated by a Roma team that was in dire need of points. Roma may have wanted it more and Lecce did not play well which could affect the team of morals but even so, there’s no need to panic I don’t think relegation is a real possibility even though they’re not that many points away from it. Leece has done a tremendous job given the fact that this has been the first season. Against Roma, it was really bad but overall I have faith in this team to be able to survive the season. It’s going to be another challenge to maintain their place in Italian football next season but this season I think they have more than enough to at least survive the year without being relegated. They’re going to have to perform at a high level in big games they are capable of doing just because they were unable to do that against Roma does not mean they should freak out. They have enough quality to get themselves through the rest of the season without being relegated. Last night was not the best moment for them but I have faith and belief are there going to be just fine. They have been getting points against a lot of the bottom of the table and if they continue to do that they’ll have no problem confirming survival they’ll have to pick up points as often as they possibly can but one bad performance won’t Define their season I will be shocked if this team gets relegated they have more than enough to maintain their place in Serie A Beyond this season.
More History for Edin Dzeko
Edin Dzeko only continues to be one of Roma’s greatest ever players as he makes more history in a hugely important game. Last night Roma gave Lecce the business and proved to be one of the performers of the week yet again. It was a truly outstanding performance by the Bosnian but on top of that, he made more history as he only continues to rise up in the record books as he has been one of Roma’s greatest ever players. In the second half of Roma’s win, Edin Dzeko scored his 102nd Roma goal which takes him to 6th on Roma’s all-time scoring list as he has now equaled Montella on Roma’s goals. With 102 goals to his name he just needs two more goals to go into the top five. The greatness of edin Dzeko has been vastly underrated his entire career. He has won league titles in Germany in England. It’s unlikely he will accomplish this in Italy but he certainly has the potential to take Roma to the Europa League this year. Roma needs a trophy to justify how great he has been. Not only that he has been one of the most underrated players in the league this season is important to Roma cannot be understated. On top of everything, he’s achieved the performance was breathtaking. A perfect supply pass to Mkhitaryan helps Roma open up a two-goal lead before the end of the first half. Great vision and supply not to mention he scored a goal of his own in the second half. He was responsible for two of the four goals scored in their win. The performance by the entire team that was largely led by Edin Dzeko. Mikitarian did steal the headlines but the Bosnian played an influential role in the final result. He has proven it to be a leader for this young team and he’s the only non-roman that deserves to wear the armband. There are those who did not think he’s a great leader but he has proven time and time again and taking accountability and has been responsible in his role with the team. Paulo Fonseca continues to get the best out of him he has scored 15 goals in all competitions including 12 goals in the League this season not to mention he has played roles in facilitating opportunities for teammates as he puts those around him in position to succeed. He is still the most complete striker in Italian football. Ciro Immobile has been all the rage this season as he has been an unbelievable player and is putting up numbers people are blinded by the number of penalties he has been given but he still has been sensational. When he does not score he does not affect the game edin Dzeko can be scoreless but can still be the best player on a team he may not be the best player on Roma but the impact he has had has proven his status as one of the most complete Strikers in Europe. As great as the Lazio striker is edin Dzeko has over 40 more goals and nearly 70 more assists. If you were just to take the numbers he has had in Roma and the career numbers of Immboile he has almost the same amount of assists since being in Rome than Immboile has in his career. Not to mention edin Dzeko has done this and multiple leagues playing for some big teams. edin Dzeko has gone under the radar for so long people are in love with the numbers but the numbers are not the only thing that’s important if you look at the way he plays and what he has done this season for this team despite their league positioning he has been Sensational. This weekend in what felt like a must-win game edin Dzeko delivered as he shows his unbelievable qualities yet again as he continues to chase down history.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan A Piece to the Puzzle
Henrikh Mkhitaryan stole the headlines in Roma that big win over the weekend. He is without question undoubtedly one of the performers of the week with a breathtaking display. The Armenian midfielder has struggled with injuries this season but has stayed consistent when he has been healthy. He arrived from Arsenal on a loan deal with an option to buy something that has helped his career immensely so far. Mkhitaryan can be used in so many different ways and has made an impact on the team even arguably being one of the team’s best players when healthy. He scored in his first start and also has contributed goals off the Bench. He has dealt with some injuries this season and that has to a certain extent stunted his progress with Roma. He has shown unbelievable qualities and has bought into Roma and what they are aiming to accomplish. Even though the season hasn’t gone exactly how they would have expected or wanted injuries have played a part in that and it’s hard to build something that’s already partially broken. However, when Mikatarian is ready to go and is playing well he is one of the best players on the team. He showed exactly how much quality he has an unbelievable performance over the weekend. Surely one of the best displays we have seen during the games this weekend he played with intelligence convection and consistency. Edin Dzeko and henrikh Mkhitaryan delivered for Roma last night. Both of them were responsible for 50% of the goals. Both players got a goal and assist in their performances Mkhitaryan does steal the headlines here is opening 45 minutes he was unbelievable. On the opening attack of the game, Mkhitaryan picked out a perfect pass for Cengiz who needed a goal for confidence. Then in the second half, he scored splitting his strike right between the legs of the keeper that got Roma out in front in the early part of the game. He has been incredibly consistent and could be vibing for a starting position at least temporarily. Lorenzo Pellegrini has struggled over the last couple weeks even though ideally we would like him to improve Mkhitaryan should temporarily be starting in his position. He has bought into the system and has done everything Roma has asked of him. Whether he’s starting games is coming off the bench it doesn’t make a difference to him he is able to impact the game in any way. last night he scored his second goal of the month as he has been tremendous in February. He only continues to gather confidence as he is starting to become a truly important piece to the Roma puzzle.
