Following one of Roma’s best performances of the season in a 4-0 victory over Lecce. As they snap their winning streak Roma return to the Europa League round of 32 with an opportunity to qualify with the results in Belgium. In the first meeting last week it was a really horrible performance but Roma’s early goal by Carles Perez was the difference as Roma managed to secure a 1-0 victory at home at the Stadio Olimpico. On top of that despite Roma not playing that well they managed not to surrender in away that could have come back and haunted them. The ball is in Roma’s court as they have the momentum and confidence as they should feel that they have more than enough to get the job done on a Thursday night in Belgium. An away goal for Roma will be huge given the fact that the Belgium side does not have one. The confidence and momentum that the team has been lacking has been restored. The Romans will go into this game as favorites once again and they will be needing a similar performance to what we saw over the weekend. However Gent is at home in front of their own fans for the possibility is still deal with. They may not have an away goal but this is still a very open match. In European football Anything Can Happen. Will we see Roma finish the job and knock out Gent as they punch their tickets into the round of 16 or will we have an upset on our hands? Do the Gent have what it takes to turn this around we’ll find all that out in more when these two teams go head-to-head in Belgium on a Thursday night with everything at stake.
Gent typically lineup in the 4-1-3-2 formation in goal we should expect to see Kaminski. Their back line consists of Lustig, Plastun, Ngadeu & Mohammadi. They play with one defensive midfielder as Owusu plays that role for the team. In the central Midfield we should expect to see the star power from Jonathan David the team’s leading scorer with 19 goals this season. Beside him on the wings we should see Kums & Odjidja. then up front as the strikers we should see Depoitre & Roman Yaremchuck who has scored 17 goals this season. The key player for this team is Jonathan David who is the creator and has the ability to score goals the Roma defense will have to try to keep him and Roman in check
Paulo Fonseca in all likelihood is going to stay with his 4-2-3-1 formation ahead of this match. Given the fact that this is a European match that could see Roma advance to the next round it is possible that he can make a formation change but based on the way the team played over the weekend I find it unlikely. There should only be minimal changes ahead of this match but Roma will likely make a couple of adjustments. In goal as always is expected to be Pau Lopez. The backline we saw over the weekend works really well together and so we should see a return of the same defensive setup. At left-back should be Alex Kolarov beside him the centre-back partnership of Gianluca Mancini and Chris Smalling then out right back after an impressive performance over the weekend I would give Bruno Peres another start. There should be no change to the defensive Midfield Adamu Diawara continues to recover from his injury he could make an appearance at some point as he has returned to training but is unlikely he will start this game. As it stands Roma should start Bryan cristante and Jordan veretout in the defensive Midfield. In that attacking Midfield we could see a couple of changes. Lorenzo Pellegrini has not been playing well lately and as it has turned out he has picked up a minor injury. In light of these events henrikh mkhitaryan is likely to occupy that position after his Sensational display over the weekend. On the left-wing we should see The Return of Justin kluivert to the starting lineup and on the opposite side Carles Perez should surely start after scoring the only goal in the Cup tie so far. Then up front as a main Striker the 6th highest goal scorer in Roma’s history Edin Dzeko someone who can be a problem in this match if the Midfield can give service. As always Roma will have options have options on the bench if they are if they are needed.
Roma has all the momentum and confidence riding with them ahead of this match. When these two teams played last week Roma did get the result & managed not to surrender any away goals which is the key to the whole thing. However their performance itself in the match was uninspiring outside of the goal they scored they didn’t provide that much and had multiple opportunities to extend the lead. Even with that being said the result is what was important. Roma had lost three straight games and hadn’t won a game in their last five matches prior to their victory last Thursday. After their result they got the performance they need it over the weekend in a dominating 4-0 win against Lecce who was in great form having won three games in a row. Roma now have the confidence to finish this off. Roma have the control all they need to do is win the game and they’ll get through. An away goal will make things even more difficult on Gent. Its important not to underestimate them because they have shown quality performances many times this season and looked impressive against Roma last time. In front of their home fans they will be ready to battle back and prevent Roma from qualifying for the round of 16. Gent has the Firepower to make a difference and during the first match Jonathan David was a non-factor he is the biggest offensive threat that they can offer. They are definitely capable of turning this around but without the away goal Roma do seem to have control and we’ll go into this game as favorites. The dangerous thing is Roma now have confidence with the way Edin Dzeko & Hendrick Mkhitaryan played in addition to what they will have on the outside with Justin kluivert and Carlos Perez as explosive options the match is there’s still win. They will have to handle their circumstances in hostile ground but in the end they have the better team and they’re finally playing to the level we expect from them. Gent certainly has a chance in this game and I think they’ll play well however after back-to-back wins for Roma they will be looking for blood Roma has proven to have the ability to get big results on the road. If the Belgium side sees Roma at their best they will have a little to no chance to take them down now that they’re playing with confidence on their side. Roma have been very inconsistent this season but they will have more than enough to get this done. There will be times that gent makes it difficult on them but I see Roma getting through this match in punching a ticket to the round of 16 without much difficulty. It’s important that Roma do not underestimate what’s in front of them but I think on this occasion gent will be overmatched and will be playing from behind from the very beginning. As Roma’s European Journey will continue.
