Following a tough defeat over the weekend away at Hellas Verona, Roma tries to get back on track to return home to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome to prepare for another challenge against udinese. Roma has an excellent track record against udinese over the last couple of years. They have won 13 of the previous 15 matches between each other, including a pair of Victories previous season. Both Roma and the udinese started this season an,d in good form; with clubs tasting defeat for the first time this season, it will be a Stern test for both clubs. Roma will go into the match as slight favorites; much importance is rested on this particular matchup, considering the Derby is this coming Sunday as Italian football has midweek fixtures as the season progresses. On a Thursday night in Rome, we are expected to see one of the most exciting matchups of the week. Will Roma get back on the right track against udinese, or could we see an upset on our hands? We will find all that out and more when the teams go to battle on Thursday night at the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma possible starting lineup:
Patricio; Karsdorp, Mancini, Smalling, Calafiori; Veretout, Cristante; El Shaarawy, Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Abraham
Roma is expected to come out with a similar team that tasted defeat in Verona on Sunday; however, I expect Jose Mourinho to make a couple of adjustments ahead of this crucial match-up. In goal, as always, we should see the Portuguese Rui Patricio. The hope is that Matias Vina will be back in the squad on Thursday. If not, Ricardo calafiori will likely be used again at left-back. The center-back pairing of Rodger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini it’s highly likely to be used again with a Chance of Chris Smalling it getting into the starting lineup, but that is unclear at this point, considering he’s not quite at 100% yet. The defensive Midfield is expected to be Jordan veretout alongside Bryan cristante. In central Midfield, the best midfielder in the League this season Roma Captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has been nothing short of sensational so far this campaign. To the left, we should see Hendrik Mkhitaryan return to the starting lineup. On the right, I think Nicolo zaniolo should be dropped in favor of Carles Perez, considering he has significantly struggled and is doing more harm than good at the moment. Then upfront as Roma Central Striker should be Tammy Abraham.
Udinese possible starting lineup:
Silvestri; Becao, Nuytinck, Samir; Molina, Arslan, Walace, Pereyra, Zeegelaar; Pussetto, Deulofeu
Udinese has had a Bright Start to the season unbeaten in three of their opening four games. However, the performance on Monday night was horrid as Napoli manhandled them. Their approach in this game will likely be very different udinese typically operate out of the 3-5-2 formation. That doesn’t necessarily mean they intend to park the bus or play defensive football. Occasionally they can attack and be aggressive out of that formation. However, against Napoli, that simply did not work, and they paid for it. Napoli is the much better team, but it seems like udinese played far too open. Udinese doesn’t have a player that Roma can neutralize; this is not a team lead through a star; this is a team that performs well together. The most important thing, especially away from home, is being aggressive but not so much so where they will play open at the back. Roma is likely to have a great deal of possession in this game; the critical thing for udinese is when they have the ball to break on the counter-attack to put Roma in uncomfortable situations. Udinese, in addition to that, needs to defend well and avoid costly mistakes. They should attack Roma as a team but still keep several midfielders dropped back to avoid gaps in the defense. Verona went straight at Roma, and it worked. That doesn’t mean it will work for the udinese, but it is indeed an approach they should try. They got to make things as difficult as possible against them; another performance like we saw on Monday will not be suitable for their confidence.
Keys to Match and Prediction
Roma had some significant issues in their loss to Verona on Sunday. It appears that, at times, they rely too much on Lorenzo Pellegrini to do magic. Roma needs to play more collectively together, occupying a more creative and strategic approach to the game. It’s incredible how great Lorenzo Pellegrini is playing; he indeed has been one of the best midfielders in Europe this season. He is in a terrific form that is largely expected to continue; he is just on another level this season. However, Roma cannot rely on him alone. Jose Mourinho, we’ll have to figure out other ways to get the rest of the team involved, so it’s not entirely on his back. Dropping Nicolo zaniolo is exactly what is needed right now. He’s not playing very well and is just frankly not helping the team. His time will come, and he will show those qualities he did two years ago but just put him in the starting lineup because he is not helping the team. The defensive Midfield could be very important info feeling the attack as they push the ball forward; they need to find that connectivity together be a little better as far as communication, something they lacked in their previous game. Roma has the more talented team, and if they play well together and take advantage of the possession that they have, Roma should find a way to win this; the use of the fullbacks will be critical both from the defensive perspective as far as making things as difficult as possible and in the attack. I believe we will see a response from Roma, and they will be in a confident mood despite the circumstances. Mourinho will have his team set up in the right way as they all find those spaces to break through and try to take advantage of a udinese team that just had a rough go of it on Monday. It is going to be extremely tough because Udinese is a really strong team, but Roma at their best is a severe problem. Giving service to Tammy Abraham putting him in a good position is exactly what is needed I expect him to get a goal on Thursday and Roma to win a narrow victory; it will be challenging, but Roma must get a job done they are considering the Derby is on Sunday it’s not a lot of rest in between games. I don’t like that the schedule is set up this way, but Roma has to deal with the punches. This will be tight, but in the and I expect Roma to have a response and get the three-point, but it won’t be easy.
