Following a victory in midweek against udinese Roma prepared for one of the biggest games of the season, it was Derby Day at the Stadio Olimpico. That’s right. It’s Roma; it’s Lazio; it’s the Derby Della Capitale. One of the most heated rivalries in all of Europe, the Intrigue surrounding the game would only heat up with Jose Mourinho and Maurizio sarri as a cast of characters and personalities on both sides. Roma came into the game with slightly better form. They were looked at as slight favorites despite Lorenzo Pellegrini getting controversially sent off on Thursday as Roma would have to thrive without him. Lazio had struggled over their last two games, needing a performance of inspiration in the derby, the biggest match in Italy a superiority matters more than anything else. It was a cinematic display between two teams, along with the drama and controversy. Lazio burst out to an early lead as milinkovic-savic put his head through a beautiful cross to start the game off on the right foot following a poor defensive shape from Roma. Controversy struck not long after Nicolo zaniolo was shoved in the Box, yet no call or review as Lazio went on the break following the sequence as Pedro scored as Lazio opened up a 2-0 lead. Rodger Ibanez got Roma back into it with a goal right before the break. They held on to the lead with the big story from the first being the non-call on zaniolo. In the second half, things got bad to worse for Roma as Lazio scored again, opening up a 3-1 lead. Roma displays excellent determination and resilience despite Jordan veretout getting a goal back from Roma converting from the spot. Roma pushed late in the game, but Pepe Reina had a performance to remember preventing a late equalizer. Roma deserved more from the game, but the displays of Pepe Reina proved to be the difference as Lazio took the bragging rights for now. What was one of the most fascinating games of the weekend the Roman Derby used to be very one-sided after another show it’s as competitive as ever Jose Mourinho we’ll have a plan to get Roma back on track as Roma felt they should have got more than they did in the loss.
Jose Mourinho would set up his team out of the usual 4-2-3-1 formation. In goal would be the Portuguese shot-stopper, Rui Patricio. At left-back would be Matias Vina, beside him would be the center-back Partnership of Gianluca Mancini and Rodger Ibanez, then at right-back would be the Flying Dutchman Rick karsdorp. The defensive Midfield would be made up of Bryan cristante and Jordan Jordan veretout. Lorenzo Pellegrini would be serving a suspension for a bogus sending-off on Thursday because of this, Henrik Mkhitaryan would move to Central Midfield with Stephan El Shaarawy going out left and Nicolo zaniolo on the opposite side on the right. Then upfront as Roma Central Striker would be Tammy Abraham.
After preparations and predictions, the match was underway at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for the Derby Della Capitale. Lazio asserted themselves early with a very aggressive approach; it did not take very long for them to breakthrough. In the 10th minute, Felipe Anderson sent a beautiful cross into the box. Roma gave too much space in a center allowing milinkovic-savic to run through only to connect on a header Inside the Box, giving Rui Patricio no chance as Lazio took a 1-0 lead. Simply not the start Roma hoped for. Bryan cristante attempted to reply, coming close on a header from inside the box, but the midfielder missed to the left. A few minutes later, Lazio scored again; however, in the 19th minute, Nicolo zaniolo was taken down in the Box in what was a clear penalty it wasn’t called then Lazio went on a counter-attack with Pedro completing the Finish as Lazio took a 2-0 lead 19 minutes. The penalty in question was not reviewed or even looked at despite being blatantly obvious. Had it been reviewed, the goal would not have stood. Roma is not playing well; there’s no doubt about that, but the nature of how they were able to get the goal should not have counted based on Nicolo zaniolo being taken down in the Box. Roma was looking at a 2-0 deficit; they had to find a way back without Pellegrini; it just wasn’t going to be that simple. In fact, had he been able to play, Roma probably would not have been in that situation. Jordan veretout tried to stretch the play with a deep strike, but Pepe Reina made a great save, a regular occurrence in the derby. A minute later, near breakthrough with Nicolo zaniolo hitting the post nearly even having a chance at a follow-up strike but once again, Pepe Reina was there. As the first half continued, Roma tried to break down Lazio and get back within distance with enough time to turn it around. Ciro’s immobile misses from close before Stephan El Shaarawy was denied by Pepe Reina eventually run would find a way back in the 41st minute. Coming off a corner, Rodger Ibanez got his head on the end of a cross into the right corner as Roma minimized the deficit. At the end of the first half, Lazio had a controversial 2-1 lead as Roma gets one back to end the first half. Lazio deserves to be in front as they were the stronger team with Roma having some issues defensively, but there was more than enough time to turn this around.
Roma Chip away with Ibanez goal at the end of the half
Lazio, with an aggressive nature, continues to go after it. Serge milinkovic-savic put his head on the end of a Luis Alberto cross but unable to secure the finish. On a free-kick minutes later, Ciro immobile misfires after retrieving a cross from milinkovic savic. Roma started looking much more robust and more confident on the ball, especially with Nicolo zaniolo creating significant problems for Lazio. He has struggled throughout the first few weeks of the season but was turning it on against Lazio in the second half. However, Roma, we will get in a hole again before this; Lucas Leiva should have been sent off for an aggressive push. Not only was he not sent off, but Lorenzo Pellegrini saw red with a much less aggressive tackle. In the 62nd following more putrid defend putting Rui Patricio in an unwinnable situation has Felipe Anderson got around before tucking the ball into the back almost open net despite Mancini and Ibanez doing their best efforts to get attached to it. Roma would go to the bench as shomurodov came in for Stephan El Shaarawy. Roma got some life after a brilliant run into the box. Nicolo zaniolo was taken down in the Box this time was given a penalty. In the 70th minute, Jordan veretout beat Pepe Reina as he converts, slotting the ball in the bottom corner. Roma would minimize the deficit now; it was just a 3-2 with 20 minutes to go. A minute later, henrikh Mkhitaryan came within inches after being set up by Nicolo zaniolo. Roma just kept pushing Nicolo zaniolo ripped off a strike but Pepe Reina once again was there to deal with it; the chances just kept coming for Roma Ibanez then seeing his header go wide; henrikh Mkhitaryan put his foot through a headed past, but Tammy Abraham but another tremendous save by Pepe Reina. Carlos Perez came in for Nicolo zaniolo to bring Roma a different element of energy. Shomurodov was set up perfectly by Carles Perez, who made a great run; the Uzbekistan attacker hit a powerful strike, but once again, Pepe Reina was just a nuisance making another outstanding save. Roma would go to the bench again, bringing in Chris Smalling and Nicola Zalewski. With three minutes to go, Rodger Ibanez gave Roma one last chance. Still, his header was denied by Pepe Reina as time ran out as Lazio hated superiority for now with a 3-2 victory in the derby, a match in which Roma deserved a lot more.
Jordan Veretout converts from the spot as Roma attempt late push
It was a rough evening for Roma in the derby. Roma showed fight and determination, going behind multiple times and nearly fighting themselves back. The rapid start from Lazio was awe-inspiring despite the circumstances in which the second goal occurred. Lazio played together as a team and did all the necessary things to get the victory. Ciro immobile was especially I’m impressed with two assists on the night. Lazio took the advantage and Superior, this time potentially giving them a chance to restart their season; on the other hand, Roma dealt with a brutal blow, but plenty of positives to take the defendant was atrocious certainly something that needs to be sorted out not to mention they were without Lorenzo Pellegrini one of the League’s best midfielders. Had he played this game and the result would have been different for the first time this season, Nicolo zaniolo looked like the player he was two years ago; if he’s able to continue to perform, Roma can put this loss behind and fight. Roma deserved a point from this game for battle from behind through Roma have some challenging games coming up, but this squad is battle-tested, and we’ll see a motivated Roma that will prove that the city lies in their hands even despite the loss Lazio won the battle but won’t win the war.
